Indian here who supports Ukraine and is from militarybackground.
Here are few points to consider:
      1. 1971 Bangladesh liberation war.
      - USA stood with Pakistan and sent itsTask Force 74 out of it's 7th fleet to attack India, USSR came to our rescue.
      2. When USA did not support india in it's nuclear tests after China tested its nuclear bomb and put sanctions, ussr helped us.
      3. US killed our beloved rocket scientists and tried to undermine our rocket and space program.
      - USSR assisted us with their technology.
      4. USA continues to give funds and arms/ ammunition to pakistan which gets rerouted to terrorists against india and taliban against USA itself.
      5. Depending on USA only have damaged countries like vietnam, Afghanistan, etc.
      - Whenever USA is in a tough spot, it scoots and leaves its allies on their own.
      - unreliable like Russia.
      6. Russia always helps us in UNSC with its veto.
      7. We don't want Russia and China to team up against India.
      - already pakistan and china are teamed up against india..
      - it will be us who will face the brunt, not the USA which is across an ocean.
      8. USA woke newspapers always emanates anti india propaganda and calls anti nationalists to pen their editorials. Example: New York Times.
      - Calls our govt Hindu nationalist but doesn't calls its own government Christian nationalist in a country where to take oath on the Bible.
      - In india we take oath on our constitution.
      9. Last special point, Europe continues to buy gas from Russia.
      - What india buys in a month, Europe buys I an afternoon in monetary terms.
      - Why target india then?
      ..
      Anyways, Slava ukraini.

Details here: India had a good military partnership with the US and UK till 1960. The proof is a joint operations with CIA in China. A plutonium device (due to unlimited energy) was planned to be put in the Himalayas to monitor China which is still missing to this date.
Then Nixon happened. Nixon hated the Indians and started supplying Pakistan against India and the Chinese against the Soviets. So the Soviets started cozying to india to have multiple fronts for China.
Remember, the Soviets and CIA killed a sitting prime minister of India because he wanted to have an independent foreign policy.
The Soviets started giving jets and tanks to India to power up their military. There were so many Communist in India that they took over all of the institutes and started doing communist crap. The relationship continued till 1991.

One of the main reason for India to align a little more towards the Russians rather than the US is because during the 1971 India-Pak war, US & the western world alliance supported Pakistan and even sent the US fleet to support Pakistan. At that crucial moment it was the Russians who sent their nuclear subs to protect India from an attack/intimidation tactics of the west. Hence India always saw Russia as an allay rather than keeping a neutral stance towards Russia.

It's more like the united regions of india than a homogeneous country. The political history of india also highlights than for most of it's history, india has not been a unified country. I admire individual leaders such as Lord Krishna, Siddhartha Gautama, even Mohandas Gandhi as inspiration figures for all of mankind. I have also read a lot of the Bhagavad Gita and converse with Indian people who have moved to the US. I also understand that Democracy and human rights are recent additions to India's history and are not part of India's historical culture. Currently India faces military problems from Communist China as well as Pakistan and many various extreme Muslim organizations who hate Hindu culture. The religious differences between Muslims and Hindus as well as Sikhs, even Christians is also well known. i do not belong to any organized religion but I do understand what the term "Cosmic delusion" means and what unified consciousness represents. The disagreements that i have with Indian politics revolves around India selling out it's Hindu morals which are very good for a short term gain at the expense of innocent people. To support the crimes of the Soviet Union/Russia for many decades while knowing what they do to the Russian people and their neighbors is a disgrace, as it also is for the many other countries who act with such dishonor. Humanity rarely acts with honor as the human ego only considers power and domination as worthwhile goals. But you and i can at least not support such acts as we both know they help no one in the long run. India had a good military partnership with the US and UK till 1960.

Pretty good big-picture summary. I'm surprised that I don't often see the US-Pakistan relationship mentioned in explanations of why India gravitated more towards the USSR than the West in terms of arms and security arrangements. To massively oversimplify what was a complex, multi-faceted process: In the 1950s-80s the US judged that Pakistan, because of its geographic position was a more crucial cold-war ally than India. Since Pakistan and India had been locked in conflict since the partition of the former British colony, how could that have had any other effect than to push India into closer ties with the USSR? It seems like a very obvious and substantial factor, but I don't often see it mentioned.
Decades later, with so many things changed, it seems like there is much more potential for the interests of India and the US to align. I wouldn't expect the two nations to come running into each other's arms, however. There are good reasons to foster alliance and also reasons to not move too quickly. It'll be interesting to watch that process.

The relationship between Russia and India is strong because the Russians do not force India to ditch the US while the US tries to force India to ditch Russia. Ditching Russia would mean losing options and placing India firmly under the US.

One thing that was not covered was India's sub-par experience with post soviet Russian Defence Paraphanelia. India purchased INS Vikramaditya Aircraft Carrier from Russia which was mothballed Soviet Missile Cruiser of Gorshkov class. It was offered for around $1.5 billion, deal was signed, payments were made and cost was immediately jacked up to $4.5 billion USD.
Russian Shipbuilder Sevamash Ship Yard issued a threats on the lines of "Pay up $4 Billion or we would fix the ship and hand it over to Russian Navy. Since the payments were done and India was over dependent on Russia that was the worst nightmare for the government of that time. After a lot of back and forth a new deal was worked out, where India paid up more money, delivery was delayed and right before the delivery the ship broke down due to shoddy workmanship in the boilers.
Its not only Indian Navy, IAF operates, SU-30 MKI which come with AL-31 engines which were not thermocline which means that these engines work fine in cold subzero temperatures of Russia but in Hot and Humid and high sea level environment of India these engines used to wear out fast and perform suboptimally. The situation was so dire that Indian scientists had to work on AL-31 Engine, reverse engineer the components, work on new thermal coating for AL-31 engines to make them flight worthy since IAF operates over 250+ SU 30 MKI. Even after doing so much work the availability of the aircraft is only 60%.

Russians in the sense of the traditional Slavic Europeans won't have enough manpower to hold the recourse rich far east Russia, and so in that sense Russians won't always have Russia. As far as the US goes, the country is a pretty homogenous society with abundant recourses as well. Throw Canada into the mix, and they have just about every recourse they need to be self sustainable. I can see them going the route of Japan becoming a more isolationist but highly developed country. I don't see the full back slide taking place as in Russia. Dear Cappy, this is a late reply, but you need to be corrected. India post Independence was buying British & French weapons. We had Vickers tanks, Mystere jets etc. But after that India started the NON Aligned moment as the world was divided into American block and USSR block, but the west looked at NAM as "if you are not with us, you are against us" India was a socialist Democratic country, so ideologically it went closer to Soviet union. thus all the weapons in India were Russian. The cars were japanese, German, Italian (FIAT) and few local indian brands inspired by British cars. In 70s most companies were nationalised, foreign companies left India. In 1990s India changed to market economy, thus different countries started investing. But still the west was not that eager to sell weapons to India further there was a flawed model of purchase. If you look at say top of the line planes, Russian plane might be 10 million, the Western plane might be 25 million, so automatically as per the tender the Russian plane would win, sometimes Russia might subsidize the price to ensure they got the deal and support of india.
this model of purchasing lowest price plane, was a flaw, which Indian MoD started to understand, and rather than merely go on purchase price, they went for life cycle cost. So its price of plane, spares for 40 years, maintenance etc, also availability rate. For example a Russian Su-30MKI would require upto 10-12 engines for its lifetime of say 40 years. IAF flies 240 hours a year, that makes it 9600 hours, Engine lifetime of AL-31FP is about 1500 hours, but on other hand, western engines are expensive, but their lifetime is about 6000-10000 hours. so for what one might need 10-12 russian engines (twin engine planes so upto 6 changes) will need 1 change for western plane for its lifetime, thus 2 engines. also western engines are modular, hence the faulty module is replaced with good one, & the plane is ready to fly, when the plane is flying the faulty module is repaired. thus even with fault in engine, its identified, the faulty module replaced and the plane is ready to fly. The Russian engine has to be opened the fault identified and repaired, thus the plane either is grounded or an extra engine that is in stock has to be used to fly. Thus western fighters have higher availability rate as compared to Russian ones. Russian planes are cheap to buy, but in 40 years they end up costing twice the price of Western planes.
so now India is not going for the cheap price, but for weapon that is effective & offers better lifecycle cost for period of say 40 years for plane.

All true yet one key thing was cleverly phrased causing NATO nations to distrust India. "Nationalized" means India stile private property, factories built by western owners, then gave them over to politically connected locals as gifts, with expectations of greater support.
That's how some families in India became Uber rich while oppressing 750 million citizens via extreme racism (also abhorrent to most westerners).
How can u trust mega racists who stole your property, buy weapons from your biggest enemy, support your enemy politically & mirror their economic system after your enemy?
Early India was only barely, not communist.

@@davidfisher5140 Well you are factually incorrect, seems you are still living in 70s.
Nationalisation took place in 70s, companies like Coca cola left India, they returned back in 90s and thriving now. Whatever the companies were nationalised then, there were not many that were used. The fact is that to run a company not only need factories and people but strategies. Which country is not racist? But in India we accept the differences and move on, unlike west which is left talking about racism, giving rise to new "movements" which actually disturb everything that was to be positive. West should definitely not talk about racism I mean each day there are racially motivated murders in the west, not in India.
The fact is that in 60s USA found it more easy to work with Pakistan than with India. So Pak was buying USA weapons, we purchased from the competitor and they work well. I mean battle of longewala, the top USA tank Patton in brigade was utterly destroyed by company of indian soldiers. In politics there are no enemies only interest, so if west takes their interest, we shall take ours. you should stop whining and get over it, that might help. Further whatever policies we had, we are not top 5 economy, so nothing we complain of, wonder why you are crying?

@sachi ... You contradict yourself. Nationalization by definition is theft from private owners by government. It is a key reason why Africa has difficulty getting major industry investment, bc many times in the past once the west in est3r, they stole it, then ran it into the ground destroying the stolen business through incompetence. India competently managed the stolen properties.
Racism? Your poor understanding comes from media manipulation. USA has the least racism in the world (nearly so). India's racism is the Brahmans manipulating all others against ea other. 100yrs of Hindi history keeps over 50% of the population in legislated extreme poverty, effective slavery. It 5ook a long time for USA get past that, 200yrs, but we did. Then equal rights followed not long thereafter.
I really like India despite its massive problems with race & religion. But if ppl like you can lean to listen to those better educated & experienced, your country could be improved much more rapidly. BTW, I root for India overtaking US software industry. Bc our software ppl are actually 3nemi3s of USA seeking to destroy USA from the inside while also stealing from other nations (yours included).
Many misunderstand India. One thing not stated often is the irrational fear & hatred of "colonizers." Irrational beliefs harm India. U aren't blessed by a rat peeing on you & it should be common to safeguard food from pests. India could become a vast powerhouse if a few fundamental changes are made. Hint: rats & dalits

Apart from the mentioned and commented points, I believe that there is a well known emotional support for Russia from Indian public because of its role in '72 and '99 war. It's not like India did not ask the west for help during those wars, but it received help from Russia. It will always be apparent to India that the current military alliance interests from the west is for serving their own geopolitical interest rather than humane interests.

India has been more and more wary about Russian weapons. They had "problems" before the war in Ukraine, now, they seem outdated.
This is why they envision buying more "rafales" for their carrier and air force, rather than Sukhoi.

Su-30 MKI is on its way to be upgraded with indigenous avionics. Will be among the most advanced 4.5 generation aircraft in the region. Upscaled Uttam AESA radar, DRWR, Jammer, etc all in the works. The fleet is to be upgraded in two phases. Upgrades have likely already begun. MKI uses far superior avionics and weapons systems to its Russian counterpart.

one thing I wanna mention is that rather than saying India shouldn't align with Russia or should not buy Russian oil west should take steps for being closer a closer ally of India , the more you come closer to India , more we will reduce our dependence on Russia
