For anyone thinking of moving to Ashland, I'll give you a complete and realistic view after having lived here for 22 years.
If you live somewhere like LA, San Fran, Denver and really enjoy the very liberal ideology but want less people, more safety, friendlier people, you'll probably love Ashland. It has an 8% registered Republican voter base. Bring your income/retirement with you because the economy here is brutal unless you work for the hospital, OSF or SOU. It's a great place to raise a family if you can afford the steep cost of living. I feel like the food scene is entirely overrated and Medford is pretty vital for more shopping & entertainment. We have homeless people but unless you work or shop on the South end of town you won't really see them. The sun really doesn't come out from November to May so make sure you tank Vitamin D. Oh, and you'll generally lose 3-6 weeks every year or two to horrible smoke from fires in Oregon/California but that's true of any location in Southern Oregon.
If you are religious and/or conservative, don't move here. I'm doing you a favor, trust me. You will feel like an outcast and it can be challenging. If you like Southern Oregon and were thinking about Ashland, move to one of the nice neighborhoods in Medford. If you enjoy some things in Ashland, you can make the 15 minute drive when desired.

@@jill6285 they are only 10 or so miles apart so it's highly unlikely but it is generally a few degrees warmer in Medford compared to Ashland, especially in the summer.

There's a whole variety of local shops here that are so interesting to poke around in. Great for clothing and for gifts and vintage. Hippies are now minimal here as the wealthy are the only ones who can afford to buy homes here. But we are grateful to have Ashland as a refuge from a world that thinks liberals are beneath them. There is a thriving art and music scene here. Families are safe here as are the multitude of retired people here. And the community vibe here is just awesome. This is the first place I have ever lived where my natural friendliness is welcomed and reciprocated. Lots of people are spiritually aware; lots of many kinds of churches, including conservative ones. I have sacrificed a lot to live here and believe me, it's worth it...

Nice video. Couple things to add though. I thought I read last year that the average house in Ashland cost about $750k. Little more than what you mentioned. Of course I'm talking about central Ashland, where you can walk or ride your bike to get everywhere easily.
As to the isolation, we go to Medford and Costco etc often, the drive always amazes me because it's so short and so beautiful. What we find annoying is getting in or out of Ashland. The interstate connections are on each extreme side of town (north or south). Feels like it takes longer to get out of town than it takes to get into Medford once you finally make it to I-5.
I'm off to see if you have any dedicated videos on Rogue River and Talent.. 🙌🏼

Tents/camps at each highway entrance and tucked away in several places here and there.

I got arrested for trying to sleep at lithia park, after being given 5 tickets in a row by a clearly disgruntled cop... they don't mind homelessness *cough* but they'll bust you for any bullshit loitering, trespassing, smoking, drinking stuff that us homeless folks do... but only if you look homeless... if you're normal you can do all those things just fine. Oddly enough, they didn't seem to mind the meth and fentanyl users, but came at me hard for drinking and smoking cigarettes.

I think he is wrong about the homeless people. You cannot go to a grocery store and not be asked for money and or watching a homeless person openly shoplift. Having said that I agree you don't see them as much in the park as you do in other communities parks. Overall its a nice place but there are plenty of homeless people.

Great video. I think you're confusing the homeless transients at the plaza and surrounding area with hippies though. The hippies grew up and became the woke in Ashland and then there's the transients that peddle at the plaza.

We were 25 year members of OSF. We eventually called our annual visits quits due to the ultra liberalism of the festival. Anything goes these days. We helped fund the Allen Pavilion of the Eliza. Stage. We always enjoyed the Green Show. But the Green Show is supposed to be in harmony with what is staged at the Eliz. Not anymore. We have no likes for modern dance of contortionists when historically it has been an extension of Eliz themes of Shakey’s plays. Our last play was in 2012 and walked out in disgust

The state as a whole is quite liberal, but Southern Oregon is definitely more conservative. Josephine County is more so than Jackson County, and it's less expensive. Have you looked into that at all? I have several videos about Grants Pass that you might want to check out.

On the subject of Ashland being like visiting a different place: from the perspective of a conservative Christian living in Medford - I avoid Ashland. I've been there once in the last 10 years. That one time, I drove through... well let's just say, there was a lot of progressive signage that was very 'in your face', not inclusive, and anti-Christian. Including on the Ashland High School's sign out front. On the College balcony, and on several vehicles. Just passing through, I did not feel welcome, and have not been back.

Ashland could be one of the greatest towns in America if it wasn’t so woke. Amazing location, surrounded by beautiful mountains, great weather. The cons are, that there are a lot of woke zombies and virtue signaling. Way too many homeless for such a small town.

It's long been a hipster Mecca. They are still into Regaae and ganga,.... they think it's the 1980s and Reagan is in office. Rage against the machine, baby! But there are some Born Agains and odd sects around, too. I learned to avoid Ashland like the plague. Not into crazy town, anymore. Especially at those prices.
