  • In February 2013 my in-laws gave me the full set of DelPrado- Build the Victory magazines. They found these, unopened, at a market.
    In the end this was a bit of a ‘kit bash.’ Some of the original parts were of poor quality and needed replacing. www.modelerscentral.com was a great source of parts.
    The project was finished in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic, with lots of work happening during lock-down in Victoria Australia.

    Congratulations of bringing her to such a beautiful conclusion! I'm still in the middle of building mine (started 18 years ago when it first came out) I also took some time off when I lost my old workroom in the garage until a new one was built in the attic - about five years! Since then I've been basically using the kit as a basis for scratch building replacements for all the details - new stern galleries (had to, as I discovered long after Del Prado finished they'd sent me two side pieces from the same side!) Replaced that plywood central hull side insert with planks, used wooden grills instead of the plastic netting and added the correct number of beams over the deck well. Also changed the forward 'fence' for a solid bulwark and a solid screen along the poop deck (following the Jotika/Caldercraft model) At the moment I'm creating crew figures by converting 1/100 scale railway type plastic figures. Still nowhere near the masts! Her build diary is on the DeAgostini Model Space forum. Trouble is other modelling projects keep butting in!! Well done again!

      Did you buy it a magazine at a time? That would make it incredibly challenging. I often had to look ahead. I was so glad I had the whole set before I started.

      @@Cameron.Nicholls Hi Cameron! Yes, I bought the collection one at a time on subscription. I got as far as building the main hull up to the first layer of planking and then had a 5 - 6 year pause whilst waiting to build a new workroom. During that time the whole collection was er, collected and stored in boxes unopened and unchecked (unfortunately) as it was only when re-starting the build I realised that some of the metal castings were misformed (including one of the figurehead cherubs) and the metal side gallery had been sent with two of the same side instead of port and starboard! By then Del Prado had ceased the collection and I couldn't ask for replacements! I completely rebuilt the stern section with metal side galleries from Cornwall Model Boats which were mated up to the kit rear gallery casting (and internal details for the cabins). The compass binnacle casting was replaced with a scratch built 3D one with a 'proper' ship's wheel and the poop deck skylight with a wood and glazing update. I now have to create the crew figures to populate the lower gun deck where visible through the open well in the main deck and then add the rails and netting to the open middle section, add the four well steps and then I'm ready for the masts - most of which will be made with new dowels from the model shop (when they're open again) as the kit material was 'less than perfect' to say the least! I don't think the real thing took 18 years to build!!

    This is absutely beautiful. What's really nice is that you have gone for the new colour scheme. Something many of us are afraid to do as there is little resource material to go with it. You have done an incredible job of keep our most beautiful ship alive.. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

      It just so happened that as I was building her, I came across an article about the research into the original paint. Doing a little more work myself I landed on the colour. I thought that the model needs to represent the time I built it as well. That meant using the new (old) colour.

    Really sweet achievement. The sails are inspired. But what's the thinking? Looks like all the squares are being taken in simultaneously, with the clews drawn in ahead of the bunt lines. I have no idea, but is there a legit seafaring reason to actually do that? It would certainly require "All hands to the rigging". Looks bloody great anyway. Congrats.

    • @Cameron.Nicholls
      @Cameron.Nicholls  3 года назад +4

      Lol! 🤣 I just followed the poor instructions. I have no idea what clews or bunt lines are!? I’ll do some Googling. Thanks for the question though. I certainly did learn a lot about ships while building this.
      Seriously though, One of the decisions I came to early was that I was not building a “scale replica”. I noticed in the early stages I was looking at original photos of the Victory and trying to be too “true”. I quickly realised that at this scale and using the materials provided it was never going to be perfect. I decided I was going for a “concept.” This was a truely liberating decision as it allowed me to make changes, adaptations and just get on with finishing the build.

    Would you recommend this for beginner (but very patient!) Modellers? I hear the kit and instructions are pretty poor...

    • @Cameron.Nicholls
      @Cameron.Nicholls  10 месяцев назад +1

      The instructions are really poor. If you are a beginner, read lots, watch lots of RUclips and be prepared to innovate and make decisions on the fly. Patients is key as there are times you just need to ponder until you come up with a solution you are happy with. In addition taking time to get each wooden component sanded and as well finished as possible will give you the best outcome. I also fell into a trap where I was looking for realism at one point. This was a real trap, as this is not a model for realism. It’s conceptual, you just need to suspend disbelief and go for it!!

    Great work. I'm currently building the same model now. My dad bought the whole kit way back when it came out and he is sadly not able to build it so passed it on to me to complete. Could you tell me the shade of paint that you used instead of the usual bold yellow?. I like the look a lot better and think I will paint mine the same. Thanks.

      Hi Cameron. I'm currently starting the thin veneer outer planking. Have you any tips for separating the planks out of the thin sheets. I'm finding it impossible to get them out without the ends all tearing and can't cut them out accurately with scissors either. Can you overlap these on the ship? Just seems by the time I've got a plank that's usable I've alot of waste material and they are not easy to sand the long edges flat. Any tips much appreciated. Thanks. Johnny.
