CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Martha (Martina Gedeck) and Mario (Sergio Castellitto) work together in the kitchen.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sandra Nettelbeck spins this gentle drama about how a child's presence can change the lives of the most shy and career-minded of adults. Martha (Martina Gedeck) is the chef of a popular Hamburg eatery who fusses and obsesses over each dish before it leaves the kitchen. The demands of her job and her natural shyness keep her from breaking out of her routine to meet new people. When her sister suddenly dies in a car accident, Martha adopts Lina, her eight-year-old niece. Martha's life soon completely changes -- not only must she adjust herself to new parental role, but she must help Lina deal with her grief over the loss of her mother. Martha gets unexpected help from Mario, Martha's hunky new sous chef, who is not only a whiz on the chopping block but knows sundry magic tricks and jokes to keep Lina's spirits afloat. Just as Martha starts to grow attached to the girl, however, the possibility of Lina returning to the custody of her father arises. This film was screened at the 2001 Toronto Film Festival.

I love how this film easily started the foundation of Mario/Martha's relationship. They started out at odds because Martha couldn't bear sharing her kitchen, but instead of doing the usual two chefs/1 kitchen butting heads thing, the writers subvert that cliche. Mario wanted to work in that restaurant because of Martha and he, as a fellow chef, admired and respected her cooking and skill. The writers then use this quick cooking scene to establish that Mario himself is a skilled chef by quickly showing how easily the dinner service went and how Martha and Mario actually work very well together, thus opening Martha's mind to having him in her kitchen. There's no way Martha would have tolerated a chef who wasn't up to snuff. This is a quick but brilliant showcase of a relationship starting out due to mutual respect and compatibility. For Martha, compatibility in the kitchen is incredibly important.
The best song/movie ever made.

Loveliest scene in the loveliest movie 1:49
Never realized no reservations was a remake, nor that it was basically exactly the same as the original lol
I can't believe that I just found out about this movie just now!
Martina and Sergio would collaborate again in Bets and Wedding Dresses.
Fighting tooth and nail not to feel those urges.
Paolo Conte - Via con me (It's wonderful)

Where are the Dishwashers???? Those dishes and pots are not going to last long each cook cycle.
The German version is far superior to the American version.
I think Mostly Martha is among the best movies about coocking ever made :- 1
Nooo...
what song is that?
Living amid the covid pandemic and having seen evidence on face shields (it's gross, let me tell ya!), I've realized just how many droplets people can emit when speaking and how far they (droplets) can travel. I think everyone handling foods should be wearing a mask. Seriously.
😅
