I started noticing how my father, like most asian dads, express their love through actions, like cooking meals or being strict on grades.

Eating is the mainstream method of building relationship and social fabric in Taiwan The movie did a great job at portraying the irony of eating without building relationship in this family, and the father's persistent attempts to build a better relationship with his daughters, through what he does best - cooking.
always remember this movie, definitely one of the best i've ever watched ever. Also, it was showing cooking scenes at a time when it was not as widespread or popular as it is today.
this is the first thing i show my american friends when they ask about chinese cooking. narratives aside, the food prepared were immaculate and it showcases the variety and skills needed to prepare the food.
and in reverse, we asians back then considered burgers, fries, pizza and cake as celebratory-only food. That's why most of us were confused when the westerns are in awe of our everyday home cooked food, like "really? that stir fried spinach and sweet and sour fish was that great?"

I always *always* *love* these movies where it has food scenes that makes me mesmerized and hungry afterwards that I wanna either cook or order or eat many food once again.

As a home cook, whom have really improved during the pan-demic - I still look at this in awe. I can semi-do the chopping he exhibits. And I do have a bamboo steamer - but fecking hell; I can NOT do what he does. That chopstick crack is straight out of a kung-fu movie.

Warm food are not always equal warm family, how many spice and high-quality ingredient you pour for the feast its useless without good social and understanding between family, that's what I get from this clip. Maybe others have different perspective bout this, but that's just my opinion, thanks.

Nah bro it's the reality of life. Daughters get married and start their own life and family. I have 7 sister, 3 elder sisters and 4 cousins. I used to cook and eat together. When they all gone and married, it felt sad
I guess, they were all a time in their lives when they were unhappy. Feeling the loss of the mother, and with differing opinions and beliefs, they weren't a family that spoke to each other about their troubles. Eventually, when things are sorted out in the end, they appreciate their father's cooking as a family. :)

I think it's not that his daughters are ungrateful, It's just that they are trapped between their progressive vs conservative view in life. And when you have to speak it out at the dinner table, it's gonna get harder to speak, and to eat. I can feel his daughters feeling of not wanting to dissapoint their father after he cooked so much for 'em, yet they feel the need to speak up their minds and to get their father to understand.
