    Props to Ed Ames' robust vocal performance and to that instantly recognizable deep low bass in the background, Thurl Ravenscroft of Tony the Tiger fame.

    From a previous comment: John Wayne insisted on getting the best film composers for his films ranging from the Dimitri Tiomkin to Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Miklos Rozsa to John Williams for bringing some of the greatest film scores composed for cinema when most of John Wayne's movies were mostly Westerns and War pictures.

    Brilliant music. It is astonishing Kirk is still here, The Duke long gone, but when you watch his movies it seems he has never gone.

    My grandfather instilled in me the love for the old Westerns, and this one was one of his favorites... that old VHS tape ran for hours on end. This Suite brings back sweet child memories. Thanks @Soundtrack Fred

    Funny thing is, this film is perhaps the closest we ever got to seeing John Wayne do a Spaghetti Western. And the score sounds rather, well, Disney-esque in its lively playfulness.

      I think BIG JAKE was a Spaghetti Western in story line as well, the opening scenes were especially darker, men died more violently, even if it was off camera.

    1967: One of those 'meat and potatoes' Westerns John Wayne & Co. cranked out with regularity in the 60's and early 70's; this one for Universal. Wayne's Batjac production company could afford top-notch composers; Tiomkin and Washington cranked out one for this one, and Ed Ames, who was hot both on TV (Mingo on "Daniel Boone") and on records ("My Cup Runneth Over") was a great choice to handle the vocal.

    Have never made it through this movie, as it always seemed that the armored wagon could have been stopped by somebody hiding in the rocks and using a rifle to kill the horses pulling it.

    The best westerns have music by Dimitri Tiomkin and one of these Actors: Wayne, Mitchum, Eastwood or Douglas. Further suggestions? Maybe a director such as Howard Hawks.

    One of my favorite westerns ever! Anyone else notice the Comanches speak Spanish to the white guys in this while using their language among themselves?

    • @chrisj2539
      @chrisj2539 5 лет назад +1

      That makes sense, because most Comanches could speak Spanish, and most Texans picked up at least a working comprehension of it.

    • @rjmcallister1888
      @rjmcallister1888 3 года назад +1

      You'll find that in a number of Wayne films; something he picked up from his days with John Ford.

    • @robertcorbell1006
      @robertcorbell1006 3 года назад +2

      Yes to both. It's a little factually correct aspect that you don't find in many classic westerns. Same with actual Chinese actresses speaking in their native Cantonese, as most Chinese-Americans with generational roots came from Guangdong, as is evident in Chinese-American food (buffet fodder as opposed to legit Chinatown food). It's good to see western films with the authenticity of history.

    Dmitry Zinovievitch Tiomkin, from Russia, became the greatest western composer.

      Gotta disagree, though I deeply admire Tiomkin and his music, Elmer Bernstein gives him plenty of competition for that title.

      +robert szvetics One of the problems with re-mastering a movie is that the music stems might not match the actual film. Eastwood's movies, for the most part, probably have separate tracks, synced to the film. When they did The Magnificent Seven, the available music tracks had been combined with the effect tracks and only the theme could be presented in stereo.

      Geoffroy Mazeau vincent wilson , Hey there you both!
      I don't want to tell any lies, here is what the soundtrack label said to this production, maybe it brings some light into the dark! Fred :-)
      "Intrada proudly offers complete score, newly mixed & mastered in full stereo from actual multi-track session masters stored in mint condition in Universal vaults. CD includes terrific opening "Ballad of The War Wagon", sung by Ed Ames. Happily, all "sweetener" elements also survived in perfect condition, allowing Intrada to remix all stereo chorus overdubs for main title, including additional harmonica & piano tracks! Tiomkin creates great main theme for armor-plated gold wagon, then fashions dynamic variations underlining preparations by Wayne & Douglas to destroy it along with villainous owner Bruce Cabot. Latter half of score features several incredible action set-pieces with Tiomkin in spectacular form as he nears end of composing career. Hearing it all in vivid stereo makes for an exciting listen!"
