    Honoring Bob Shane b. 2/1/34 - d. 1/26/20
It was with great pleasure and a great honor to have known and worked with the original Kingston Trio and their legacy today is firmly intact. As the exclusive agency for the heirs we at Producers, Inc. enjoy seeing the original energy and sound kept alive and well for sold-out audiences across the country.
I enjoyed many hours of fun and adventure with BOB SHANE. He ran the organization and kept the TRIO and legacy active these many years. Thank you, Bob for your loyalty, perseverance and love of folk music and its impact world-wide. We will continue our responsibility to keep your music alive. You will be missed.
    Craig Hankenson, President, Producers, Inc.

Nice comments on Bob Shane. Bob sure affected many of us followers. He gave a lot to folk music and entertainment in general. He sure picked great replacements to keep the legacy alive. Definitely no one like him.

I always thought that Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds" was one of the best crafted songs ever. I'm always amazed that the songs that the Kingston Trio would not or did not get released are still better than the music put out today. Thanks for posting.

Another great song written by Ian Tyson, who at 82 has just had open heart surgery. Hope Ian will be back and writing and singing soon. Now this is another great arrangement by the KT. They just simply did not do any bad songs. Their following today is the envy of so many groups.

I saw the original group, Nick, Bob and Dave in 1959 at Kansas State University. They had a string bass player for background. Sat in the front row of Ahearn Fieldhouse. Still have some of the original vinyls they produced. Nothing compared to the real thing.

I first saw the Kingston Trio, when I was about 9 years old, on PBS. That's when I heard Tom Dooley. 30 years later, I've become more a fan cause of another PBS special & RUclips. IMO, the John Stewart era is my favorite.

Neil Young made a nice recording of this song. All of my friends used to make fun of me for listening to the Kingston Trio, Ian & Sylvia and other folk groups and artists. They were into rock music. But when NY recorded it they started to change their minds--just a bit.

As much as I know all music, I find out something new everyday. I first heard Bobby Bare's version in the 70's and I new Neil Young recorded it but I thought Neil was the original. Didn't know Ian Tyson wrote it. Think I like Kingston Trio's version the best.

Peter Kane writes: "Great until the unison finish, ahh ouch." You're right.
There's a reason this song never made it on to one of their original albums but only on later releases with previously unreleased material. The material was previously unreleased because it didn't make the grade. The same is true for this song. It was a weak, uninspired rendition. Sad but true. I loved the Trio, but not this one.

Gary: I don't doubt that you know your stuff, but I have to laugh hoarsely when I'm forced to accept the fact that Capitol Records said that this tune did not make the level of an album cut, while, at the same time, my ear has to plough its way through the minefield of absolute merde that today's record companies obviously had/have no problem sticking onto albums, with such crap getting constant airplay. I can only conclude that my generation (I'm 68, going on 19) must have had some pretty stiff standards, all around.

I think Peter, Paul and Mary did the same thing. It's like Americans don't know where Alberta is and they don't care. I find this rather insulting. Fortunately, most other artists who covered the song stuck to the right lyrics.

The other version is not of the original trio(I mean with Dave Guard) but is sung by Bob Shane instead of John Stewart. It's much better .John Stewart doesn't sound at ease with the lead.

Tyson wrote of Alberta.... not the mountains. Probably didn't know where it was and too lazy to find out.

    • @sensei48

I hope this is a lame attempt at humor. Tyson was a Canadian born in BC who lived for fifty years on his ranch in Longview, Alberta - with a lovely view of the Rocky Moutains from his front porch. I'd bet the KT didn't think US residents would know where Alberta was - ridiculous if so. The song was covered hundreds of times and most everyone knew that Ian and Sylvia were Canadian.

    • @larrybrus6209
      @larrybrus6209 Год назад +2

@@sensei48 This was two years ago and I wanted to listen to the song. I listened to a few versions including Neil Young's. The KT version avoids the reference to Alberta. Being Albertan and loving the reference to my home I was angered and posted a comment to that affect. And I'm full of sorrow for our loss of Ian Tyson a Canadian icon.

    • @sensei48

@@larrybrus6209 - Perfectly understandable, and I agree that the Trio's alteration mangles Tyson's beautiful lyric. My apologies for misunderstanding your intent.

By the way, as much as I've loved the KT for 60+ years, I never warmed to the way that they played fast and loose with singer-songwriters' carefully crafted tunes. Artists like Tyson, Lightfoot, Paxton, and others seemed to have tolerated this because in its early years, Kingston Trio LPs went gold and generated huge royalties for songsmiths whose tunes appeared on them. The KT was also appropriately chastised for its cavalier vulgarization of more than a few traditional songs as well.
