Suddenly, the year after, we have a 42 year-old washed up Pujols hitting like his prime and Judge breaks homerun records left and right.

@Roy de Vries de Vries I think MLB has treated Bonds pretty harshly. He's the best player my eyes have ever seen in over 50 years of watching baseball. And yet they keep him out of the Hall of Fame. Because he used PED's. I don't know if you guys are aware, Barry Bonds had a personal trainer, a personal gourmet chef, lifted weights with a bodybuilder's routine, and bulked up to 215 lbs. He would look like a midget standing next to Judge right now. First thing you notice after he starts taking PED's is how greatly acute his hand eye coordination improved, how greatly his swing improved, how greatly his recognition of pitches coming at him improved! That's the first thing I noticed when he was on the PED's! I saw the improvement in how he recognized pitches and said to myself "gosh darn it he must be on PEDs"!

Maris hit 59 homers by his 155th game, so he deserved the asterisk. The Yankees also had a tie that year and played 163 games. Maris hit his 61st in the 163rd game.

I agree with your take on the steroid era, but I'm inclined to take it easy on Maris Jr. He's just sticking up for his dad.
But the rest of us? I understand people being angry at the steroid era, but there's literally nothing we can do about it now. Players reacted to their environment. Yes, Fay Vincent sent out a memo in 1991 saying that steroids/PEDs were banned and that there would be consequences for using them. But there was no way of enforcing those consequences, and no specific details about what those consequences would be. So when McGwire and Sosa and Bonds and Clemens and all the others were using the late '90s/early '00s, the reasons to take PEDs were: quicker recovery from injury, meaning increased playing time-->better strength and stamina-->improved individual performance-->improved team performance-->improved chances of playing in the postseason-->contention for major postseason awards (individual glory)-->bigger contracts, adding up to perhaps tens of millions of extra dollars in contract endorsement earnings. And what was to stop them? An unenforceable memo.
It sucks that this was the case, but we can't change that now.

Guys, lets face it. Throughout a good portion of the 20th century, greenies were used A LOT. Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle & Henry Aaron, all admitted to using them at different points in their careers. At the time, amphetamines were illegal to use in the USA without a prescription, but widely used in ballplayers. Just like anabolic steroids during the 1990's & early 2000's. So, I will say it over & over. Even the guys in the 60's took something, especially when testing for it wasn't super great yet & also wasn't technically against any rules as of yet for the sport. So, I really like what the Maris family stands for & Roger Maris is my all time favorite Yankee ever. But, I don't think that discredits the Eye to Ball coordination from Sosa, McGuire, Bonds etc.. On top of all that, the majority of players were doing something during this time. So, I say that is an equal playing field since the majority of players were using something.

While I understand your perspective on most of this video, I'm actually going to disagree on the "fact" that steroids "don't help hand eye coordination or squaring up a baseball." One of the things that came out was that Bonds openly admitted to another teammate that the cream and the clear put him "in the zone." He said he was never more locked in in his career. And I think his numbers very clearly showed that to be true. If you want to argue that's just a mental thing, and doesn't actually help his hand eye coordination, go ahead and believe that. You're allowed. But comparing *his own numbers* against his previous numbers, especially at the age he was, involved more than just power and a really short right field fence. He was literally seeing the ball better and reacting better than he ever had before. And HE put that on the roids

If you're in it for the long haul, Arron Rodgers is doing it right. If you're looking to make a 'quick buck' and get out of it, I can see why someone might consider steroids and other PED's. To the hand-eye coordination argument regarding PEDs, yeah it might not have a direct impact on that, but in terms of bat speed and ability to catch up to a hard fastball while the pitcher is mixing up fastballs and off speed pitches, it can definitely help a hitter squarely barrel a ball they might otherwise foul off or pop up, or hit a ball farther when caught off balance (i.e. not “getting all of it”). So in that respect it can certainly help a hitter square up more pitches for home runs they otherwise wouldn’t and the inflated numbers during the steroid era appear to back this up.

Its pretty clear that Bonds started taking steroids around 1999. Just look at his body, his freaking dome grew!
Anyway, he went from a 30-40 home run kind of player to hitting 49, 73, 46, 45, and 45 home runs all the while increasing his yearly walks by 50-100.
It is clear that steroids increased his power and hitting ability by a significant margin.

Or just speculate which ones were close not using a percentage and just break down where the shots under 400 ft were hit and if you think they would’ve been out or not. He and Andy van Slyke were both there, and if he lets van Slyke make that throw, Bream never scores, he's the 3rd out in the bottom of the 9th, and the Braves go into extra innings with zero position players on the bench...when Francisco Cabrerra went up to bat, he was the last bench player. (Of course, Jim Leyland needed to have his ass kicked for allowing Doug Drabek to go out and start the 9th. He was totally out of gas ending the 8th, and he had both Bob Walk and Tim Wakefield available and ready. Both had warmed up in the 8th. Stan Belinda was the "closer," but he sucked out loud.)

What people forget that Maris took 162 games to break Babe Ruth's single season record (60), of which the regular season during his time was 154 games (the AL went to 162 games when they expanded in 1961). Aaron Judge tied Maris' single-season record (61) playing in the Yankees' 155th regular season game, thus Judge broke Ruth's record in the old 154-game season format (the 155th game being the tie-breaker game that would have been played if necessary in order to determine the winner of the AL Pennant) and with seven games to go, provided that opposing teams do not intentionally walk Judge, he will definitely break Maris' single-season record at 62 and counting(?).

It's obvious from before and after pictures of the other 'home run' kings that they were taking steroids. Judge should officially be named the single season home run record holder if he hits his 62nd home run. Just like Henry Aaron should still be the all time home run king.

Even if I weren't a Yankee fan, I would still say Judge is the HR king. I was happy for the record to be broken in 1998, but once those guys failed their tests, MLB needed to remove those stats. I never approved of the 73 HRs in 2001 because that guy had more drugs in him than a NYC junkie. Now MLB must revisit this issue and finally remove all HRs records over Judge's 62. Judge is the HR king.

The steroid era was the best time in baseball history!! and 1998 was the best year ever steroids or no steroids!! there was not one human being on this planet that I knew or that anyone knew that was not following the home run race! it's the only time that I can look back and remember everyone everyone!!! No matter what they were doing would stop and watched each and time that Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa came up to bat!!! That year is one of the best memories of my life that year and the 1986 world Series!

I couldn't have cared less when it was going on. It was obviously tainted.
