So cool that it happened against Sosa and the Cubs. I look back at it now as a tainted record, but it was still a tremendous moment in baseball history.
Nothing cool about a cheater. His pathetic excuse apology was disgusting.
@@rayray4192 Steroid era saved baseball. There's a reason the MLB waited 12 years after banning them to start testing for them.
@@rayray4192 ya just take steroids in high school and college like they do now so that idiots on the internet don’t call u a cheater
@@jollyface5986 funny, because it’s true.
But thank about how many players where on greenies from the 40s to the 90's players have been and will continue to try and get the competitive edge
I saw this live as it happened. I remember.
One of the greatest moments in sports history.
Oh please he was a cheater!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@kevinw9073 Yeah but Mark and Sammy literally saved baseball from the strike.
So they get a pass.
Still a sports historic moment.
He forgot to thank PEDs in his speech.
Not a single player on the field felt like it was tarnished
I remember this year and it was the most exciting year for me as far as baseball. I lived in the Bronx, and the Yankees not only swept the Padres in the World Series, but their eventual final record that year (including playoffs) was the best in MLB history and still stands today. 114 regular season wins and 11-2 in playoffs, for a total of 125 wins. What an amazing season for that TEAM. Reason I’m mentioning this is because this is a TEAM sport. That year, not a single Yankee hit more than 30 home runs if I remember correctly. But they accomplished their amazing record breaking season as a team. That year as we all know was the great HR chase between McGwire and Sosa. It was indeed very fun to watch. However, after what we learned, these types of players were loaded with steroids and are very disappointing. Granted you still have to have a ton of skill and coordination to hit a baseball coming at you at 100mph, and I’ll give that to him. However, his one statement where he admitted to steroids, to me, negates that part of that special season/year (1998) and all I care to remember was how the Yankees dominated the hell out of opponents. Here’s what McGuire said and it speaks volumes…basically any respect I had for him was wiped out immediately and will never be regained.
"I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 offseason and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again," McGwire said in his statement. "I used them on occasion throughout the '90s, including during the 1998 season."
Babe Ruth hit 714 before blacks were allowed in mlb
I have been fortunate to see 3 records broken. Roger Maris when he broke Babe Ruth's 60 HR record. Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive game record and McGuire breaking Maris's record and I saw them all.
Oh McGuire and Sosa, two guys hugging it out “I won’t see ya in the HOF”
Cardinals & Cubs are a heated rivalry, but for a few minutes that was not the case. I forgot who the pitcher was but from what I read he wasn't thrilled that his teammates congratulated Mark
I can understand that.
I miss 1998 and that HR chase. Love ya Big Mac!
Don't ya just love CHEATERS????
@@kevinw9073 When he broke it, it was legal, so shoosh.
Just juice em!!!
Love that he got so excited he hopped over first base
Probably the steroids caused that. WAKE THE HELL UP! He CHEATED!
No worries a Yankee will save baseball ⚾️ again #99…All Rise..
It's gonna be great when Judge is on the Red Sox next year
@@carminerichards8299 Judge is a Yankee icon now he retires a Yankee bub
@@BillyMan3112345judge got embarrassed in the playoffs 1-16 and swept
The fact you keep the man out of the HOF yet still use this moment to gain revenue speaks volumes about MLB.
Get off "soap box." The man CHEATED, that speaks volumes.
@@kevinw9073 nobody said he didn't. Please show me on this doll where my comment hurt you.
@@kevinw9073steroids doesn’t help you hit a ball going 90-100
Mark McGwire his 49 homers as a rookie Z The A’s had back to back to back rookie of the year awards. He didn’t need to enhance his body. He and Canseco swept the Giants in the 89 World Series. Ego drives players to cheat.
You might forget at one point after 62 Sosa had a 66 to 65 lead! So Sosa was the first to hit 66..
The poor guy was taking Andro to help him alleviate the injuries that had curtailed his last couple of seasons. It wasn't like he was hiding it or anything. It was in full display in his locker and of course reporter snitches called him on it. He sure does look like James Hetfield of Metallica.
What an incredible moment for baseball. No matter what your view is of it today, all you have to do is look at the atmosphere surrounding this chase & know that it was truly special
It was a lie.
Too bad it wasn’t done legitimately
@@walterbison Steroid era saved baseball. There's a reason the MLB waited 12 years after banning them to start testing for them.
LMAO. What the hell is so special about a person CHEATING to break record???
That Cubs pitcher isn't congratulating him. He's in the record books too, but not in the good category.
There’s no Cheating and lying in Baseball,….oh wait. Mcguire, Soto, Bonds to name a few.
The real insult was walking up to the Roger Maris family and shaking their hands.
Did anyone see the guys getting tackled at 0:23
What a disgraceful moment though. What a fake and a fraud. Shameless on his part, knowing he was cheating. Thank God for Judge. We can finally erase this guy from history.
Bravo
Nobody on the field seems to think it was fraudulent… and they competed for it.
But Jason in who gives a f ville says it
This was before the steroid issue really unfolded, but there was such great sportsmanship here, and that's what I admired most about it.
Excuse me, I just threw up to your comment.
Too bad he cheated. What a disgrace.
"It couldn't happen to a better man." 😂😂😂
Unless of course you cheated, right???
And the way Mark embraced Maris's kids. "Class", not at all, shame.
I say we let everyone juice if they want to. F it.
Back then the players were juiced, now MLB juices the baseballs because more HRs are hit now than in this era. 6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of the other.
A Scam artist, what is so noteworthy about about this historical moment that was cheated on with steroids?? If nothing ese he should be ashamed of himself forever.
McGwire gave Trachsel a taste of his own medicine.
He made him wait 5 minutes between pitches.
The steroids caused that.
Still thinks he belongs in the HOF. Everybody, and I mean everybody was juiced back then… the HR chase literally saved the Cardinals franchise, let alone baseball… #changemymind
Oh, I’m quite sure “he still thinks he should be in the HOF “ heh 😄✌️
LMAO
Total fraud. What a stain on the game.
Steroid era saved baseball. There's a reason the MLB waited 12 years after banning them to start testing for them. The MLB wanted steroids in the game.
SPOT ON!
I mean not really
Fiction.
A disgrace to the Maris family who were there for this sham event. The Maris family was there to celebrate the true HR champion - Aaron Judge. The Maris family feels he is now the real HR champ.
Baseball’s Lamest Moments Ever !
Shoeless Joe on McGwire : “He’s a darn shameless cheater! “
absolutely!
The best single-season HR record brought to you by HGH and steroids. Maris still the best. Use the juice, you lose respect.
Who cares just enjoy the broken record
Then you lose the record 3 years later to another cheater.
(Comment posted 24 years to the day of this event happening.)

Cheater, cheater, pumpkin eater
Judge is doing the same thing in 2022 don't worry Yankee fans you'll flame me today in 2022 but once he's done playing the truth will be revealed.
I’m not even a Yankees fan and think that’s a dumbass comment.
Quit your whining and grow up. LMAO
