"Don't worry I'm not gonna start doing a podcast." *has been doing a thing where he and another person and sometimes a guest talk to each other for an extended period of time with little to no visual content for just over two years*
I know I'm three years late, but it's funny because I work nights, and I've recently been listening to this as a podcast; phone in my pocket, earbud in my ear
One of the reasons I love watching Tom's videos is that he didn't get lucky and fall into a niche. He loved/loves to create and experiment and tried really hard to get to where he is. If other youtubers are lottery winners, then Tom would be a statistician poker player.
He kind of worries me though, because he doesn't just try really hard to be personally successful, he also tries really hard to do it right and be fair to others, spending money on captioning, carbon offseting, and the like, while turning down more money from sponsors. If the other RUclipsrs are lottery winners, then Tom might be a statistician poker player. But if the other RUclipsrs are sleazy salesmen, then Tom might one day end up uncompetitive :(
@@neolexiousneolexian6079 Oh, Tom is a fantastic salesman and he knows it. Maybe he doesn't show that in videos but the work that has to be done behind the scenes to do what he does is insane. I'm more worried about the mental toll this might have on him as humans in general are sh*t at dealing with stress.
I'm not convinced there wasn't a lot of luck involved too. I mean all the good things you say are true but he got lucky by having friends like Matt Gary etc etc... and I don't think he would be anywhere as successful w/o them. I mean on his own Tom has a bit of a tendency to say all the right things are concerning, all the bad things are bad and generally be a bit TedXish...and that's fine and good if it's balanced by enough other videos that show him as a normal grounded person and I fear w/o Matt et al he'd start drifting into sententious prick category. So yah hard work and all the things you said but also being lucky enough to have some great friends.
Hmmm, "experimental stuff", "back in the kitchen". Does this mean we're getting *The Great Wiki Bake-Off?* The Technical Difficulties attempting to cook food based only on their Wikipedia descriptions. Strictly no recipe books allowed!
Tom: "Some of it worked, some of it didn't. But it's all getting pushed out at some point." Glad to see they've figured out that we're more interested in what didn't work over what did.
I don't think there's one episode of Citation Needed that has failed to make me tear up from laughing so hard. We'll keep enjoying them as long as you keep making them!
The video problem that I saw was only about a pixel wide at 1080, so if you watched at a low resolution there's a good chance it was entirely removed from the video.
Good grief about those who complained. High video quality isn't necessary for enjoying Citation Needed. I frequently watch it at 144p resolution (to save on data).
With the glitch, it was mostly people saying, "I hope my computer isn't dying, can other people see this?" People were actually suggesting watching at lower resolution so that the problems wouldn't be reproduced in disturbing detail.
Honestly I miss the kitchen, and honestly I don't watch Citation Needed as mush as I listen to it. Usually it shows up while I am doing chores arround the farm, and hit play on my phone and stick it in my pocket and listen.
I LOVE the experimental and game show type stuff, so I look forward to more of that. I guarantee that whatever it is, most of us will enjoy it! I've yet to see anything from you guys I didn't enjoy.
Honestly Tom (and Matt), it looks great. Not everything needs to be Hollywood level 1080p Hi-def. Citation Needed doesn't need to be visually spectacular. To be completely honest, the old kitchen set-up, with you four on the square table is still my favourite. Anyway, good 2018 to you guys!
Citation needed since I've found it last year has been an absolute day stopper. *Phone buzzes* "Oooooooooo, Mystery Biscuits!" *Drops everything*. Thanks for the lovely content and we'll happily deal with these little errors!
I was one of the people commenting about the video quality, but more out of curiousity what caused it. Not because it bothered me. To be honest, audio is faaaaaaar more important. Often, I 'watch' the episodes in a podcast fashion. So Matt: Good job! (Take the credit!) and Tom: You've done a great job editing. A minor visual 'flaw' like that is no problem.
I feel like I've said this before, but the only thing I can ask of you gentlemen with regards to Citation Needed or any other content you produce, is simply to keep working towards things you genuinely find fun. That element of enjoying what you're doing as you record it comes through. I can't think of any forced jokes or painfully scripted content, it really feels like you're a bunch of people having some fun and a laugh together, or talking about technical subjects that you're genuinely interested in. There's a passion and interest there that I enjoy; That's what's brought me back every time I see another video posted. Thanks for all the great content you two have put out, together and individually!
Don’t be bought down by something you can’t control Tom. At the end of the day, this was the fault of RUclips, both in the uploading and the recording. This was not your fault and at the end on the day there’s nothing more that you can do about this. Keep making your content because you always make us laugh, no matter how much grain is in the video.
Genuinely miss the Park Bench a lot. Although I completely understand that you guys stopped doing it when it stopped being fun / enjoyable, which takes a lot of will honestly - and I have a lot of respect for you guys' ability to make such a decision.. But it'd be absolutely lovely to still have it around. Miss this.
I loved the last two series of Citation Needed. I miss the reverse trivia game (and wish it had a catchier name), as it is great fun to listen to when driving. It was great seeing the guest panelists (especially since I see them on other channels, aside from their own), and it might be interesting to have an entire series with just guest panelists (maybe Geoff Marshall and Jay Foreman). I will say, I still enjoy kitchen shows, and look forward to what your brain(s) have conjured.
The only 'issue' I noticed with the episodes in question was a slightly heavy use of blue lighting, which was odd. Apart from that it looked fine, you've both (all?) done a fantastic job. I can't wait for the new stuff, both Citation Needed and back-to-the-kitchen.
I totally understand that lots of people want to watch a live recording of Citation Needed, but yeah, the kitchen recordings just seem to have that bit extra. I think being in front of any sort of audience holds you back a bit from the sort of risky things you might do in front of your mates. Hence, I'm really happy to hear that we are going to see some experimental kitchen recordings Sometime Soon(tm).
Happy New Year Matt and Tom! Citation Needed is one of the funniest and most interesting things on youtube, keep up the good work! Edit: I'd totally watch a podcast.
I enjoyed the kitchen just as much as the RUclips studio. I honestly never really watched to series because of the video quality. I enjoy the interaction between the 4 of you guys and the occasional guest. So keep the series coming you have real gold with this stuff

In an attempt to make you guys feel better: I didn't notice any errors in the audio or video of the last two series of Citation Needed. I watch it for the laughs, not the technical precision. As long as the content is entertaining, I could care less about the "quality" issues.

What I love about the two of you as RUclipsrs is that you don´t just stick to one thing. It is lovely to see you try out new stuff, so looking forward to 2018 with you lot.
I didn't notice the glitches either. I came for a good laugh and wasn't disappointed. I have made friends laugh by listing it as one of my favourite Christmas presents so thank you. Happy new year and keep on being awesome.

Will we ever return to the kitchen? The audience is lovely, but I have a soft spot for that kitchen. Edit: oh, I should listen in further before commenting
I'd like to see the next park bench presented from a pair of barbers chairs while you both get a hair cut. Either that or Matt just cuts Tom's hair in a random park...
To be honest, I preferred the kitchen setup. Moving to a studio audience has changed the dynamics slightly. It felt much more relaxed and natural when you were just larking around in the kitchen.
Given that Tom seemingly likes to subvert expectations, I wouldn't be suprised for a Tom Scott podcast to suddenly appear in the near future. Have a Happy New Year! (Note: this does not only apply to Matt and Tom, but everyone watching the video too)
You don't need to do a Tomcast -- I mean a podcast! Damn it, now you've put the idea in my head and I want it. Don't worry though... I'm just happy you didn't kill the Park Bench!
Go here to apply to be in the audience for the next series of Citation Needed: techdif.co.uk/live/
Matt and Tom unfortunately, my location's far from UK. Any chance of remote attendance.
Can I have a representative show up on my behalf with a picture of my face taped to their head?
Oh, boy, do I wish I could come, but unfortunately: US.
I'm from Austria, but I probably will be in London for MCM Comic Con. So if the recording would happen to be around then I would apply.
I hope it's on a date far enough in advance I can get the days off and book a flight. Because I'd be coming over from the Netherlands.
