+Matt and Tom Happy new year! You should have done a time lapse photo every day kind of thing about the slow decay of Matts soggy cardboard cutout! Cue the sad piano time-lapse music!
Message to 2025 Tom; Please don't delete them, every few years I rewatch these videos because they helped keep me sane in university and it's like having a sit down with some old friends I haven't seen in a while.
A message to 2025 Tom: These got me through quarantine without my friends. These are still getting through 7 months of not seeing my friends because I'm still scared of the pandemic. Please don't delete any of these old videos they are simply amazing.
"I did linguistics, so I had some time." - As a current linguistics undergrad, I feel this. I spend more time studying random topics in linguistics than I do studying for my actual courses.
+Matt and Tom My ex used to have a house in Gunnersbury, before we moved to the States. As I recall, sitting out in the garden, there was a plane overhead every 55 seconds heading into Heathrow.
Okay, you had a cardboard cutout when you were insignificant to the world. Now you are approaching some significance status and should definitely try and get a high five wax version of yourself.
Still at university, however I'm doing theoretical physics so most of my "free time" has already been allocated to either revision, society socials, or curling up in a ball because my course makes me feel inadequate.
+DisaidraGaming As an astro student, I feel your pain (but we don't even have the socials, save for christmas and end-of-year meals. That I'm aware of, at least)
+DisaidraGaming Yep, that's exactly my life.. its sad I've never got to experience what most people seem to experience as students. Working jobs is so much nicer because at least you get a free weekend..
i love that you seem to have decided not to go the 'delete all my old videos i now think are cringey' route because it means i still get to binge them all chronologically in 2023
**puts on best Tom Scott voice** ‘Soggy cardboard cutout’ sounds a BIT euphemistic… To 2025 Tom: I absolutely adore these, something about watching some old mates wax poetical about their shared history whilst good-naturedly taking the piss out of each other (and themselves) is utterly wholesome and uplifting; please, don’t pull them down! They’re very good for the soul, if such a thing exists.
I'm also with you guys on the "prank" videos. It's only a matter of time before someone tries it in the US of A and ends up being shot by someone with a conceal carry.
+Tom Bullock pretty sure it's already happened but the video got deleted.... no proof though, but there's enough beer and guns in texas to guarantee it's already happened.
On the topic of london street performers, i was in Covent garden just before christmas and there was this man who was balancing on several layers of plank and tube, whilst juggling machetes. Was impressed.
My favourite hidden camera prank was a video where a guy wearing a scream mask jumped out of a dumpster and scared the crap out of people, the best part was that one guy just reacted and knocked him out cold as a reflex, it was beautiful, all I could think was 'that guy deserved that'. XD
Im okay with most of the Just for laugh pranks, not the prank channels though. As long as the other person goes away laughing and happy i think its a perfect prank.
Tom and Matt, please I beg you do not delete these videos in 2025. The park bench kept me sane in the uncertain times of the pandemic. Watching your videos momentarily transported me back to going out with my friends to the park and hanging out before the world fell into chaos. The respite you provided me single-handedly got me through the pandemic, thanks Matt and Tom. Olly
I also hate those pranks. My father laughs and shows me them and I imagine "that's because it's not you there". It's funny because he doesn't like the ones that "apparently are set up"
I think I remember seeing Tom juggling in the park in York in 2006/7, while I was desperately trying (and failing) to chat up a girl I was very interested in. I certainly remember Mr Purple!
The only time I think it's ok for you to do a prank to unsuspecting members of society, is something like the elevator weather man, where it does NOTHING to to actual person, and they are already stuck for a set amount of time.
My friend collects the cardboard cutouts from movies. She works in a movie theater and often takes them home once the movie isn't being promoted anymore. For a prank once, we stuck pictures of a lot of her friends to the backs of them. She's kept them so actually several of my friends are now cutouts in her closet from that old prank.
Aw man I remember the painted people statues from childhood trips to england. sad to hear that's not a thing anymore, that was a cherished memory of mine :(
along the flight path of Heathrow? I now know exactly which park bench it is.... unfortunately I live in Brighton so cant photograph it... but just trust me on this one
+Matt and Tom Do you know how happy it makes me to know that somebody else knows the elbow trick for giving high fives? Everyone always looks at me as if I'm crazy when I tell them to do it!
I love inconveniencing my friends for a cheap laugh, but that's because I know what they're ok with and they can get back at me. I'd never do anything like that to someone I don't know.
You make me sad, that's not how uni works anymore for so many people. Whenever my folks tell me about their time I also get a little envious, don't know if it's cultural or economic, but while students still do cool things like youth organisations. But not like that, that silly stuff just sorta seems to be dead?
Yeah. Maybe it's because I'm american, or that I am doing a fairly complicated comp-sci degree, or the pandemic. Either way their whimsical take on college life is not my experience at all.
A message to 2025 Tom please don't delete any of these old videos they are simply amazing
+struan gallie I'm not sure the 2025 struan gallie will agree.
+struan gallie It'll be pretty difficult for him to do considering there are browser plugins that let people download stuff from youtube...
+struan gallie its the internet nothing is ever truly deleted....
yes please, 3 years later, still amazing :)
ok
"Wouldn't it be funny to have a cardboard cutout of yourself?" someone asked me the other day. Little did they know I've had one before! -- Matt
+Matt and Tom Happy new year!

The cutout may be gone but do you still wear the t-shirt? And get high fives?
+Scarlett Phoenix Good question!
You assume you are capable of wiping yourself from the internet.

Yes! I made it through the pandemic solely thanks to Tom Scott and Matt Gray's videos from the past.
Look after yourself
I spent a lot of Summer 2020 listening to these park benches and it helped me get through a really unsure time

As a current linguistics undergrad, same
You guys have a knack for choosing park benches under flight path of an airport.
Pretty much all of London is under the flight path of one of its airports! -- Matt
+Matt and Tom My ex used to have a house in Gunnersbury, before we moved to the States. As I recall, sitting out in the garden, there was a plane overhead every 55 seconds heading into Heathrow.

''The bike he was wearing''--Tom
I was crying with laughter at the landlord bit. It's like something from a surreal sitcom.
a message for tom in 5 years: dont delete the old videoes, theyre the peak of humor and fun.
Please warn us before you delete these videos.
You don't notice the sunset while the video is playing, but after you finish watching it, go back to the beginning. The is a stark contrast.
That guy at 13:50 has been a long time coming.
How appropriate
The bit when his landlord comes knocking and his cardboard cutout is in the hallway. Absolutely Priceless :D :D :D
I'm also with you guys on the "prank" videos. It's only a matter of time before someone tries it in the US of A and ends up being shot by someone with a conceal carry.

+Tom Bullock Although in the States, we've had a tradition of shows like Candid Camera ever since the earliest days of television in the late 1940s.
I'm pretty sure most "dangerous" pranks are fakes.

Your take on Brian Blessed is spot on. I actually met him once, decades ago. Nice chap, but you characterized him exactly.
The Purple Man is still there, too! All of his proceeds go to charity, such as a Grenfell Survivors charity or one for refugees

Im okay with most of the Just for laugh pranks, not the prank channels though. As long as the other person goes away laughing and happy i think its a perfect prank.
Couldn’t you just take the picture of him while wearing the t-shirt instead of putting it on the cutout
Sean M t-shirt hadn't arrived yet.

I'm the same that I really like 'pranks' where everyone involved has consented, but forcing it upon unconsenting people is just unpleasant
had a good reason for reposting an old picture recently as it showed my progress in weightloss over a year.
