This is proof to me that Tom Scott is ageless. He could be 25 and just out of uni or going on 40 with the soul of an old man and he displays both in this video
Peter .Cartwright it’s strange, going from a serious computer/informational video to this. He’s a dynamic person.
@@jason9875 ikr I originally just watched his channel and saw him as a funny but serious person. It's *weird watching these videos because, here, he's not really like that at all.
*good kind of weird
isn't that just what being in your 30s is
he is currently 35

The reason it took so long to get the video off of my PVR was that the USB port was only USB1.0 (even though USB2 had been around for years when I bought it).
Speaking of luck - the biggest break of the day was the double decker bus shot. I remember Sky cut to the studio within a couple of seconds of the bus moving through the shot. And we'd already decided it was too much of a long shot to make another attempt.
I still have the map posters I bought for this somewhere...
Valkoinen? Is your family finnish?
I remember transferring the content of one hard drive to an external hard driver over USB1, it took more than 24 hours,
Transferring the data into the new computer with USB2 took half an hour.
They mention ”Chris White”, which would translate to Christopher Valkoinen. Nice.
@@oscarn- My name used to be White, when I got married my partner and I decided to pick a new surname and we liked the sound of Valkoinen when we tried translating my old name into lots of different languages. Alas no Finnish ancestry as much as I would like to.
Christopher Valkoinen That’s about the coolest thing I’ve heard for a while. Congrats on the great name! 👌🏻
8:56 Tom: "... i got lost, where was i?"
Matt: "We hate each other."
Tom: "YES!"
*both laughting* XD
Wow. Great name Björn
Best part of the video!
there can't be friends who don't also hate each other
I love the way that their handling of the umbrellas reflects their distinct personalities; Tom keeps his umbrella basically stationary, not letting it distract from his presentation style, while Matt twirls his umbrella in a whimsical manner.
Hey, Tom, you never actually got around to saying what was up with your long student hair! :)

I actually remember seeing Tom on BBC news in 2009, after watching the version here on RUclips of course. I've got an odd memory for silly little things, and apparently guy in a red shirt and long hair fooling around behind a camera is one of them.
Oh my! And I thought the whole thing is made up! Glad we have an actual witness!!
You call yourselves "those dicks with the travel stories," but honestly I'm in the middle of binge-watching your entire archive and it's doing wonders for my anxiety. Keep telling your stories.

Feels, i hops they can still find time to reminisce like this even tho officially the park bench got benched. I love all their park bench reminiscing vids like this. Its what makes mad capn tom such a grt story.

2:26 I'm at the weird age, where I'm too young to have owned any phone other than a smartphone, but I'm old enough to have been very excited when my dad purchased an iPhone one because it was different.
AbsolX Guardian early 2000’s?
@@octoniumvideos yep. Good guess!
Yeah same!
I'm that age where I had a flip phone for four years before getting a smartphone at 14, so I vaguely remember the times without internet when I would literally open a dictionary or a lexicon if I ever needed to look up something for my homework and other stuff.
No one I know who is younger than me does that anymore and the feeling becomes more and more surreal with every day.
Same boat, born 2000 I remember play math games on the giant clunky computer when I was ~5 and I had what I think was a blackberry in 5th grade bc I took the city bus to school by myself. My mom thought TV/technology would rot my brain so thats all I was familiar with til 2012/13
and in 10-15 more years, you'll have people who've grown up with full HD quality videos for everything.
Just imagine: kids growing up today have never felt the true feeling of growing up in 17th century france and seeing public executions on the street
God, kids these days have it easy
you mean 4 to 6 years?
Mate I'm already quite a bit younger than those "17-18" year olds that Tom was talking about here (video upload date of 2015) and sure, while I've been watching 240p, 360p, and 480p for as long as possible, having gone into 2020; it'd already seem weird to not at least see 1080p as a video option for any video, let alone for any relatively major channel on here. I'd find it weird to see those channels upload something that isn't 1440p or above. A bunch of kids my age have had huge flat screen TVs since before they've learned how to spell 'Apple'.

"Ok, we're white, but we would still get arrested!" -Tom Scott
true though I would hate to live in America
It's decent, some parts are much much worse. VT vs UT almost everyone in VT is super kind. haha
They wouldn't have any issues doing that in the US with getting arrested. The biggest issue would be that 'news' happens so spread out here, they'd certainly have to time it to coincide with an election/inauguration/natural disaster/terrorist attack. Beyond that, the only way to do it would be to do the circuit in NYC where you stand outside the various morning show windows.
America does NOT work that way. America just portrays itself that way.
joey pigott what?
Does Matt still have a proper Matt mobile, ie one with text on the hood?
Nope, haven't got that car anymore, though I've probably still got the MATT GRAY magnetic vinyl in a box somewhere! --Matt

From the year 2020, let me thank you for being those people telling travel stories. I need 'em.
Omg literally they say they are idiots i say they are literallyyy greatt
You wouldn't be arrested for doing that in America. Happens all the time, particularly to local news crews, and there isn't any law against it, unless you're harassing the news crew or something. Actually, it would be protected under the First Amendment.
+Regolith Yeah I didn't get why they think they would be arrested. And it's not a race thing, just don't attack the reporter and grab the mic.
That wasnt about the camera it was about messing around in the parliament
Well they didn't actually do too much in parliament just saluted.

I have to argree, they were far in the background of the shot just attempting to appear on camera. News crews get "Hey I'm on TV" all the time.

I feel like "I did this accidentally/This happened accidentally and I rolled with it and now it's a thing" is a large part of Tom Scott's life.
I have a vivid memory of when I was about 6 with my dad using yahoo and me saying "good night yahoo!" For no apparent reason.
RUclips is very good at recommending your videos and then recommending the 6 years later of it straight after
It's weird getting those looks. I am 23 and too many people that is nothing but when I say that I am older than Google, suddenly you just see a change. Saying that you're older than something that has been in peoples lives for the entirety of their life is definitely something weird for them to hear.
Google is God, you can't be older than Him xD
Just kidding xD
I think it's more odd when kids have access to things like smartphones at an early age. I was born post-Google, yeah, but I was barely aware of it until I was maybe 7-8 years old? Smartphones, those are very hard for children to avoid.
This takes me back and reminds me precisely how long I have been a Tom Scott fan. I really like this sort of behind the scenes stuff, thanks so much.
this video has made me appreciate the fact that i grew up in the generation with ease of accesss to creative tools, such as premiere pro and high quality low cost digital cameras
This video made me think of my university life and now I'm sad that it's almost over. Four years that have changed me to the core.
The thing that terrifies me is I still consider that design of the Ford Fiesta new. But it's nearer 10 years old than 5. What.
only because the current facelifted Fiesta looks much older than the one in that video
Nope it's because I feel like the mk6 isn't that old either. In my head that fiesta was the same age as the mk3 focus but obviously not!
but i"m sure you"d think of it differently if it had a successor that looked significantly newer in comparison, just like the bangle designed fifth generation BMW5 made its predecessor look completely outdated, while still looking contemporary itself, even more so than its successor
I just got a ford fiesta this past 2 or 3 weeks ago. And I can confirm they look shockingly the same
The new designs look stale.
11:33 is something I bookmarked because I laugh every time I see it. The combination of humor, casual conversation, and behind the scenes is why I watch this channel.
Good choice!
Sitting here, watching this in 2023, absolutely baffled by the fact that the original 2009 video is closer to this video than this video is to the present day.
10:28 Me: "Omg, they have colour matched umbrellas."
Matt: "Yes, we have colour matched umbrellas."
It's amazing to hear Europeans talk about a 3 hour car drive as if it's some sort of outrageous distance that makes you delirious
Evan Stone 230 miles is not a 3 hour drive... Even going at an average speed of 70mph (which is the highest speed you can drive in Britain, legally) it would take 3.29 hours. So a 230 mile drive IS long...
@@scottsherman7069 3.3 miles is still not that long for a lot of americans including me
@@scottsherman7069 I’m sorry but I have to agree 3.3 hours is not that long for us, americans are fine with driving like 8 hours. Ill go for a 2 hour drive every weekend just to get somewhere I need to be without it even being a long trip.
3 hours in an engine with a box attached is a ways my dude!
Not factored in the road works on the M1 the traffic getting in to outer London then inner London then parking.

In the video Tom also watch the news on his portable Televison
Red umbrella and blue umbrella, like the Pixar short film. :) That was just a blast, thanks!!
In the U.S., "breaking the news" means to find a way to gently tell someone that something awful has happened ... I watched this for 16 min before I heard what you meant by this phrase. Good thing you guys are fun to listen to! (and I'm glad there was no bad news herein) :)
Means the same in the UK
What the video... that's not what they meant by it. But good to know the expression means the same thing over there, and it's just Matt and Tom who have a different meaning for it. Thanks!
"Breaking the News" is probably meant to be a pun on "Breaking News" in this context :)
Love you two - I'm glad others go through the same thing (falling out after two or three days and accidentally name dropping countries!).
Also, love the fact that you still go off in gales of laughter at the same joke!
cant wait for "Breaking The News, Six Years Later, Six Years Later" to come out in like one and a half years
I just absolutely love the look behind the scenes that you guys are giving us with this show!! I loved Breaking the News so to hear how it all came about is so cool! I'd love to see something similar for the virtual driving one you did with Gary Brennan or the high five one with Matt and his cardboard cutout! lol 😄 I can't wait for the next video. Happy Holidays guys!
10:28 I'm from a very dry place and seeing you guys whip out the umbrellas as fast as a pistol draw has me cracking up. I gather you have a lot of opportunities to grab for your umbrella over in the UK
I always find myself coming back to watch these videos, just amazing storytelling
A decade ago and I want to see a sequel even more.
Six years later from this "six years later"-video, RUclips recommends me this video. Feels appropriate
As much as I'd love to see another Breaking the News, I do now understand why it wouldn't work out. The same with the audio-only episodes of the TechDif.
But, I'm sure you guys will come up with something cool and new, and it'll be just as amazing. Keep up the good work!

He is still the best RUclipsr on the platform though
Hey, at least he still has hair, unlike EpicLloyd, who, well, is bald now.. It fits him tho!

Breaking the News must be my all-time favourite video of yours, it was just perfect!! (as you described). I've shown it to relatives and friends and they all enjoyed it, my sister is now a fan of your videos too, Tom. "Really funny when you're a student" I guess that's why I love the video so much! This is probably the best episode of Park Bench I'll ever watch. Shame you won't be making another but I get your points. Maybe you could think up another similar challenge which doesn't risk being arrested?!
+Mike Crilly Why would they be arrested?
+EclecticBuddha I guess America's just like that.
Lol it's not. You could if you were trying to steal the mic or something but we have a long, proud history of being a goof in the background of cameras. Just look at all of the FHRITP videos.
