I was a bit worried that this was too light-hearted a video, but one of the things I repeatedly saw -- expressed in one way or another -- in Vegas was that 'the show must go on'. -- Tom
Not inappropriate at all to be honest, not sensationalist and respectful of the events that happened there. Understandable why you'd want to hold back on publishing the main video though. That sort of thing is what separates cheap tacky amateurish You-Tubers from professionals. If anyone ever gets the opportunity, doors-off is definitely the way to do helicopter flights! Not having a sheet of plexiglass between you and the outside world turns it into a whole different experience. Rather than seeing stuff through what is a sort of low-def window, it is suddenly 360 surround, ultra high def, high dynamic range sensory blast.
Would love to see blooper reels/outtakes uploaded on a semi-routine schedule. Humanizes and makes a channel that is otherwise proper to a fault seem more relatable.
Did you consider asking for permission to film in the casinos? The only real reason they don't want you filming is to prevent cheating (well finding a way to improve your chances slightly). I think you're well known enough that you can show the managers what you do in line and explain what you want to do. They'll likely want to supervise your filming, but there are several documentaries filmed (legally) in the casinos.
Eric Taylor yeah walk in and say I just want to record here with your camera in the bag and they'll be happy. You respected their right to say no... And then you get okayed. Already be recording and yeah no you didn't ask. So yeah I think it makes more sense that way.
I deeply appreciate you talking about things that do not work because it's a side of creative projects that isn't shown enough. Failure is a key part of it. You learn by making mistakes. You will only get better if you do things and see what did not work. Also, do bring Matt next time.
You need an assistant :). Also, oh man, the heli with the doors off - when we did that in the Arctic, it was like sheer terror for a minute during take-off and then tons of adrenaline + absolutely insane wind gusts. Most of my footage from that flight was total rubbish to be honest. At one point, I was just putting my hand and arms out to flow with the wind flows (hah). That said, Vegas is such a weird place and I am now sufficiently impressed with the window design of the Bellagio (that's a great hotel to just go up and down the escalators endlessly - it's truly peak Vegas).
Tom, just for curiosity's sake (and to highlight how big the various problems you're talking about are) I think it would be novel if you took the footage that you have and went ahead and tried to make the best video you could out of it. Doesn't have to be on the main channel, but I'd love to see "Tom Scott Attempts To Polish A Turd!"
can you post the raw footage of the helicopter flight over vegas? id love to watch it even tho its shaky haha . would make for an interesting video nonetheless
I thought the "attempt at stabilisation" looked pretty good. yeah, little wobbly here and there, but IMO you'd have to pay specific attention to even notice that.
Tom (and Matt!), it's very inspiring and refreshing to see creatives be honest about their failures. It's why you're one of the cream of the crop youtubers. Cheers.
+Sam M I'm sure Colin Furze would be down, he's also a RUclipsr these days after all. Not sure about the other guy but it would make for an interesting park bench video for sure.
SUGGESTION: Hi Matt and Tom! A long long while ago you played that sport for blind people and mentioned you'd be interested in trying more. I'm an underwaterhockey player and it's a strange but amazing sport, so I think you should try it! I would invite you but A) haven't asked my team mates and B) am based in the Netherlands, so if you are going to try, there are probably way better options... Could make it into a "things you might not have done" series? If you want to know more, I'd be happy to explain.
Depends... I suppose you mean the Final Fantasy Blitzball? If so, I think it would be more like underwater rugby, which also exists. We don't really have that in the Netherlands though.
Could try attending a marching band competition, that's a weird experience. A muddy field being churned up by polished shoes and normally a road for the March section. There is a kind of fairground populated entirely by people wearing band blazers
I thought you're shoe was going to fall off at the end just to make it extra fail. Seriously though, thank you for showing us that we are all human no matter what.
Would you have mentioned the biggest lie of all, the name of the city? Almost all of the casinos are in the biggest unincorporated town in the USA, Paradise. They aren't in Las Vegas. It's too bad that you didn't go to the Mob Museum. It's really interesting.
"Hi, I'm Matt!" "And I'm Tom!" "And today..." *overwhelmingly loud helicopter noises, wind, Matt & Tom shield their eyes, trees in the background are being blown about* "...TODAY... WE HAVE A HELICOPTER!"
Tom, I live in Vegas and the winds are the strongest around the Spring and Autumn months when there is a change in the temperatures, especially in October and April. Early September is probably one of the better times to film, but good job finding that spot in the hills. There are several spots like that around town where you can get shots of the entire Strip.
For anyone else watching this in the future and having no idea what happened in Las Vegas to put it into "shock and mourning", on October 1, 2017, a tragic mass shooting took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. A lone gunman, named Stephen Paddock, opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The incident claimed the lives of 60 people and left more than 800 injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history at the time.
Air traffic control actually has to apply huge seperations behind helicopters because they create these very strong wingtip vortices. I can see how holding the camera stable with the doors open would be a problem :D
Even though this didn't work and it was a lot of effort for, effectively, only B reel, I still appreciate it. Your brutal honesty and forthrightness is tremendously... comforting, is that the right word? It also allows those aspiring to broadcast, RUclips vlogging, videography, and the like to see the kinds of things that have to be dealt with, not only from a legal and practical standpoint, but just "what looks good to the viewer." So carry on, be well, stay in touch, and do good work. :)
It's really weird to hear other people's reactions to the Las Vegas shooting as my fiancé lives there. He was working in the aftermath, as he works for one of the two funeral homes there with contracts to the coroner's office. This gave me an unexpectedly close tie as a British person.
Been to Chicago once, same problem with T tower there as well. Carefully positioned, so the name is clearly visible from a main road (the one with the elevated train). On the other hand, I got inside, and used the of the toilets, marking my opinion about the building...
Trump tower is somehow a problem, but the basis of Chicago, the rockefellers, the seedy government powers, the mafia, a corrupt law enforcement, etc are all perfectly fine? Orange man bad
Time to revisit! Could also cover how we’re handling the water crisis at Lake Mead, stop by Hemenway Park in Boulder City for a chance to see wild Big Horn Sheep up close, visit the Atomic Museum. And bring Matt!
I live in Vegas. Raised here since 1963... I love your videos, but I swear I don't remember this one. Today is Sept. 18, 2019. News commentators have been talking about 1October for a week, and will continue until October. I think it's interesting that this shows up in recommendedes this week. Word to the wise middle of September, till end of November. And April/May through June are considered the windy season. July/August and February are the monsoon seasons. If you want to come back and try again in November it will be beautiful. Cooler/cooling air with feel cleaner and fresher. One of the better months for just tooling around. Check out Red Rock Canyon, premier hiking/rock climbing area. Mount Charleston, great hiking and camping but to early for skiing. And of course Lake Mead. Fishing is better now that the water is cooling off. Come out and see us. We love our British Boys, Tom, Matt, Gary, Chris, and even Math Matt, and Jay Foreman.
I'm assuming that the real reason you can't identify gamblers is because they are assets to the casino? The casino doesn't want them to be helped out of addiction or to be embarrased and quit themselves. It couldn't be more obvious that they don't actually care about the people.
In college, a few friends flew to Vegas in a small Cessna prop plane. They parked where they were told to - right in front of the private terminal. Between a few business jets. They came back a day later to leave, and their plane wasn't there! The airport had towed their plebian Cessna to be far corner of the tarmac...
Haha I feel your pain - I've tried to shoot handheld in a light plane. Doors on of course, but that thing got buffeted around so much the footage was unusable. Then there was the go pro in the next light plane. I was wearing it on my head as I had sought permission to take the controls. I stupidly didn't check the tilt on the camera. Just set it to record and forgot about it so I could concentrate on flying when I was given the controls. Got most of the cessnas ceiling. :)
Next time you need some aerial shots you should consider hiring a drone pilot, much cheaper and cinema-grade stabilised shots! We recommend the Inspire 2 and X5S camera, check it out!
Tom’s delivery leading up to “I forgot my tripod” was flawless.
And Matt's "hahaa bellend"
I was a bit worried that this was too light-hearted a video, but one of the things I repeatedly saw -- expressed in one way or another -- in Vegas was that 'the show must go on'. -- Tom
I forgive you

I don't think perpetual misery is the right reaction to tragedies. Especially if the tragedy was inflicted by some jackass who wanted to hurt people.
The video was only made public at that time, it had been uploaded 2 days ago. You Tube's wording is misleading.
Would love to see blooper reels/outtakes uploaded on a semi-routine schedule. Humanizes and makes a channel that is otherwise proper to a fault seem more relatable.
I like the "attempted stabilisation" shots which are perfectly well stable, except maybe for filmmakers' perfectionism. ;)
I find it a perfectly good demonstration of the problem Matt points out - wobblycam as a result of rolling shutter.
It had a jelly effect because of rolling shutter
I think the original was fine enough.
I'd read Bleak and Harrowing by Tom Scott.
Better yet if it comes with an audiobook version.
That’s a fantastic title for a biography!
Well, considering that his video was going to be about "the lies of casinos," I don't think they'll really want to support him on that.
There are other documentaries that talk about the "lies" and tricks of casinos that got perms...though they probably had to pay to film.
Eric Taylor yeah walk in and say I just want to record here with your camera in the bag and they'll be happy. You respected their right to say no... And then you get okayed. Already be recording and yeah no you didn't ask. So yeah I think it makes more sense that way.
carstorm85 Those were probably made by large multimedia companies.
Senshi Sun - Correct

Tom, where did you get those shoes? Asking for a friend. It's me. I'm the friend. I want those shoes, they look snazzy as hell.
Mizuno wave paradox 3’s 👌🏻

Make it a challenge: Whoever makes it the most stable, gets two imaginary internet points.
They also get the joke that was edited out of a previous video several months ago. XD
I thought the "attempt at stabilisation" looked pretty good.
yeah, little wobbly here and there, but IMO you'd have to pay specific attention to even notice that.
TLDR; take Matt with you.
And the opposite of a rolling shutter is a global shutter.
I mean, it was subtle, but I'm fairly sure this was 13 minutes of Tom asking Matt to give up his day job...? 😉
No
It was almost 14 minutes
Congratulations on finally fulfilling your dream, Tom! You did it! You flew suspended from underneath a helicopter! Very happy for you! :D
Tom (and Matt!), it's very inspiring and refreshing to see creatives be honest about their failures. It's why you're one of the cream of the crop youtubers. Cheers.
I'm sure Matt Parker will be pleased you mentioned him when talking about a failed project, a Parker Video if you will...
A Parker square of a video, one might say
I think Tom and Matt should invite Matt Parker for some urban wall-surfing in a park, Parker Park Parkour.
Genuinely laughed out loud! So glad Brady and us Numberphile fans managed to make that a thing.
@@clockworkkirlia7475 Out of the loop?
Can you please do a Park Bench talking about Gadget Geeks? You can talk about challenges, what is was like filming, how it started etc.
I think Tom talked a bit about this in his emoji keyboard explanation if you really want to here about it...
I know, but he didn't say much about it. He only described how he used bodging in it.
+
Bradley Walden and invite the other two guys to join him
+Sam M I'm sure Colin Furze would be down, he's also a RUclipsr these days after all. Not sure about the other guy but it would make for an interesting park bench video for sure.
I swear, after just this one video, I'll start my homework...
11 hours later...
Same here though -- you can't ever get enough.
DO! UR ! WORK!
Well now that's more relatable than ever
Hope you got through your youtube addiction by now (that is what this is called). If not, please get help, it can ruin your life.
You're only supposed to take the bloody doors off!
He did.
Top gear?

This sounds awesome and I would love to see them try it. Is it like blitzball but with sticks?
Depends... I suppose you mean the Final Fantasy Blitzball? If so, I think it would be more like underwater rugby, which also exists. We don't really have that in the Netherlands though.
Erian Dragonborn send Tom an Email, it’s a good plan!

Parallel or bay?
Linda park
Parker park?
I just want a copy of the script

Almost all of the casinos are in the biggest unincorporated town in the USA, Paradise. They aren't in Las Vegas.
It's too bad that you didn't go to the Mob Museum. It's really interesting.
Biggest lie in Las Vegas.... Las Vegas isn't in Las Vegas.
Ian Colquhoun this. The casinos are outside of Las Vegas Jurisdiction
Its not in The City of Las Vegas, but it is in the Las Vegas Valley
It’s literally Paradise
Stephanie Summer in the words of CGP Grey(probably some tourist slogan too): welcome to Las Vegas. It’s Paradise
also from CGPgrey: las vegas isn't in las vegas but it is in las vegas.
The casino industry saved me from gambling. They got rid of quarter slots and I HAAAATE voucher machines! No coins, no deal.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Like Tom's video here.
So many "Awww"s from Matt on this one. Awww!
Watching 12:27 in 2024 is just a little surreal, especially Matt going "look at my penis".
I would've loved to see a video by you talking about the secrets of vegas but I understand why you didn't go through with it.
Matt and Tom's Park Helicopter.
"Hi, I'm Matt!"
"And I'm Tom!"
"And today..."
*overwhelmingly loud helicopter noises, wind, Matt & Tom shield their eyes, trees in the background are being blown about*
"...TODAY... WE HAVE A HELICOPTER!"
This was really interesting to watch. I hope you can remake it at one point, I'd be interested and I'm sure a lot of other people would be as well!
binging all the park bench videos, very much enjoying riding this wave :)

I would still LOVE to see all that footage!!!! please please please, please!!!!
That was truly death by a thousand cuts.
You handled this really well, good video as always Tom :)
What I just kept thinking when you were talking about the doorless helicopter flight, was "That's a good way to repurpose a broken helicopter"
So... 4k cameras are making it harder to anonymously record crowds.
Wish I knew you were here in Vegas! I would have loved to help with some of your technical difficulties.
You would have spouted total BS shouted a few profanities in protest to something and giggled a lot? that’s what the technical difficulties do.
Please do minute or so of green screen shenanigans for this leaf park bench background.
Matt laughing about people getting run over is what I needed today
Can you claim a tax deduction for a business trip or loss of profit (failed project)?
You got lucky on that one. Can you imagine posting that video on the same day as the shooting, but before you heard about it?
The strip is not in the city. It is officially unincorporated.

Why not use stock footage? I feel like it would be cheaper then a Vegas hotel, and would be safer legally.
And they didn't and couldn't make that a permanent memorial, because it's the welcome sign. Not a memorial sign. The memorial is closer to downtown.
The shot of your sneakers out the heli door made it all worth it.
The stabilised stuff looks really good!
Just take Matt with you everywhere, you guys are so cute together! =P

Im a few years removed from the release of this video. May I ask what happened?
Las Vegas shooting, deadliest mass shooting in US history. Basically a long range rifle into a giant crowd at a film festival. Happened 10/1/2017
Could you upload the script so we can get at least a page of facts in substitution for the usual 3 min?

i still do want to see a video about this.

"was it in your hotel room?"

Matts ending phrase. EPIC!!!
I'm looking for the video when tom had a helicopter lesson anybody know where it is?
Isn't there somewhere you could have gotten some sort of stock footage of the flyover, that had better stabilisation?
