I agree with the statement that the look of gen 1 Bionicle can be done with bricks. When we moved from gen 1 to gen 2, the look lost a lot of the visual style. The Toa became more buff, there was a lot more surface detail from prints and stickers. Thank you for recording so much for the release of this set. It means so much! I may look into instructions for some of these concepts. I actually remade the island of Mata-Nui from the World Map set and put it on rebrickable :)
My first impression was negative because I didn't know how much love and time was put into it as well as all of their restrictions. Just looking at the figure on the box. It looked very easy to build and simple and I was upset that the faceplates were literally just flat and things like that , I thought it was lazy and easy but then I learned about their budget and the fact that it's a gift set as well as other things and what it comes with and now I'm loving it!
man i hope there's more. This set is the one I've seen the most people excited for on social media, regarding the anniversary sets. It checks all my boxes and if there's more i'm all in
I'm really glad these WIP images are out, Takanuvas limbs seem easy enough to recreate - it's just his torso that's a big mystery. As for the 6 Toa concept? It's really cool! I love what we got tough, especially considering there's TWO prints in it
Additionally, if Takanuvas build is more fleshed out, it looks similar in size to the new Spider-Man SCCBS series, so that gives me hope. Maybe some talented MOC-ists could figure something out.
I honestly love the posability and detail of my brick built Tahu. Even if Lego doesn't ever make another Bionicle set, I'd love for a new product line of Lego action figures in this scale.
I haven't watched the entire one hour+ video yet, only some of it (this will take multiple sittings) but there is a sentiment that I wish to express regardless because I don't think any video can change how I feel about this set; I think you guys got the best experience possible with this GWP that I wish other fans could get. Becuase from your perspective, you got the set independently, without needing to make a $100 purchase directly from LEGO, and you got to see the passion from the designers first hand. You even had the surprise of opening it without knowing what's inside, like getting a Christmas present! For the rest of us regular folks, what we see is the just final product, without any explanation of the behind the scenes and the limitations that the product managers put on the designers. The set, if judged without proper context, loses a lot of the charm. Especially since it feels like an attempt from LEGO to persuade Bionicle fans to spend more money on other products just to get this - and immediately after the Blacktron GWP with no new sets coming out in between. Fans of both will definitely feel that in their wallet (or will have to give up on at least one of the sets). If this set is a "tribute" to Bionicle, it is a tribute that is held hostage by the way the corporate executives made it available (or rather unavailable) to the core target audience. So honestly I cannot share your positivity. All I get to see as an outsider is LEGO making one-off sets for typewriters, grand pianos, globes and sitcoms but Bionicle gets a just a high-threshold GWP and I'm supposed to thank them for including prints for the masks instead of stickers? No thanks. I get that there are many restrictions, "company policy" and "design process" for GWP, but... I don't and _shouldn't_ care as a customer. The company is supposed to offer me what I like and create policies according to that, not the other way around. I don't need to like a set more because the executives deiced this is good enough for me. If Bionicle is not profitable enough to make an actual standalone set then just. let. it. die. Don't make a comeback but only for people who can afford $100 of other stuff. That way instead of making something actually positive, you make a very large portion of the community feel left out. The build itself is cute, don't have any issue with it. Especially Takua.
I think that if they did a price conscious series of bionicles like the main figure in this set it would make a killer collectable line. Just a figure with a unique molded mask and unique molded weapons. Keep the soul of old bionicle but build on it with the techniques lego currently focuses on.
I love that Lego has given us 2 references back to Bionicle in the past 2 years with this GWP and 90 years of play. The molds getting renewed sounds like it’ll never happen which I assume is why there was Hero Factory that looked different? I missed that entire era. I would love an entire set in this style though for now if possible. I’m trying to make my own MOCs though and just have fun until the
I think lots of the negative early thoughts are from a vocal minority. Personally, I really like it, there are some minor things that bother me (Greg's name being misspelled or the mask proportions), but these are simple mistakes/limitations. The masks being prints is super great and not something I expected.
A life-size brick-built Bionicle mask (i.e. Tahu's Hau) would be a pretty cool set to see in the $200-400 price range. I'm not sure how well it would actually sell, but I could see it being a really cool item for collectors
I really appreciate them sharing with us the Toa Team design. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they look great (to me) and they're simple enough that anyone could easily source parts and build it just by looking at the pictures.
The bionicle I knew is more than 2001, it's character driven, and the heart of the story is makuta. I couldn't even idly imagine a $400 throwback set and not get the single character I've wanted all my life. It would have to be miramax makuta vs vakama in the sea of protodermis
This is just soo soo cool bro I'm happy for you all these years of collecting and entertaining us with fun facks and you finally got to interview them soo cool.
45:36: They come in orange! Lego should do what they did for The Journey To One Makuta model, release images of the Takanuva model broken down or from all sides.
I don't why people dislike this set. well maybe besides being upset it's a gift with purchase set but besides that I really don't get it if they tried bringing Bionicle back like this well maybe I could get it but in general I'm just happy we got this set and a lot of people do like it.
I wouldn't ask for the return of the old bulky pieces. I just want Technic-compatible mixel sockets, which could pave way for smaller scale technic constraction. As technic is bringing in new smaller and smaller panels, there's some room to cost-effectively make small robotic figures.
I was thinking the same thing especially with the SpongeBob pineapple being orange and using a ton of those hinges, but then I remembered they used red hinges instead lol
I just wish, down the road, that maybe a small GWP could have all the masks for the original six (including Tahu, for those who missed this one), in brick form, and that there could be instructions for the remaining five. I would for sure buy the parts myself to make my beloved Kopaka, but the mask is so important for selling the look, and it wouldn't be worthwhile to build in this style without it.
If they ever did a high price point collector based model for Bionicle in the future, I would want it to be the beach of Mata nui. The cannister washed onto the shore, the telescope sitting atop the rock archway, Tahu/Takua minifigures. The place that for many hard-core and casual fans alike, the legend of the Bionicle began.
@@LegsON Or just buy several of the old studless baseplates Lego made in the 90s. The burnt orange canyon would be great for Po-Wahi dioramas, and the Aquazone diamond underwater surface would be equally good for Ko-Wahi and Ga-Wahi.
I adore what we got just because it gives a look at what the future of Bionicle, if it ever comes back, could be and I think it's awesome! Even if nothing else comes about this just knowing Bionicle looks this good with system bricks makes me so happy and I'm so ready to see the community figure out how to build those Master Builder Rahi and print out those Pikari and Hau alternate colors so we can build Onua and Jaller in this style there's just sm to be happy about imo
Or we can denounce this and demand what we already had back. If Lego can afford to keep the licenses of major non inhouse brands, they can afford to make the molds. I'm sick of apologists making excuses for them.
Honestly if we got a pair of these for the anniversary of Mask of Light that were the Toa Nuva + Takua/Takanuva and Rahskhi+Makuta that would be really neat but that's a pipe dream.
For me what made Bionicle special was the ability to mix and match pieces and develop our own MOCs. The Bionicle building system facilitated that in a way that allowed for variety and complexity, but also with relative ease. If I didn't like the way something looked I could pop off a piece and try another. While the lego system might allow for more unique shapes, to me it would be a bit too tedious and I think I would lose interest. Even if they brought Bionicle back with this lego system I don't think it would ever be the same or capture that same magic, I honestly don't think it would even be successful economically.
It wouldn't capture the magic because without the parts it's not Bionicle. These are grown American adults that would sooner cope with shit from a company than fight for what they would WANT.
I'd love to see someone reverse-engineer the Takanuva concept, I really wanna use it as a base to make some of the titan sets like Axonn or Karzahni, might even make fr a good Makuta Teridax
A $400+ Bionicle set could be a group of Toa or a group of Toa vs a group of a villain team. They could make the builds as intriciate as they want and include just, let's say, the Toa Mata/Nuva + Takanuva, the Toa Metru/Hordika, the Toa Inika/Mahri, the Toa Mistika + Toa Ignika, or the Glatorians + Toa Mata Nui. Or, they could make them smaller and include, let's say, the Toa Mata vs the Bohrak Horde and so on. Or they could make it really expensive and mix both ideas -- all with brick-built masks. There's a lot they could do for a very large set that, and it doesn't need to be limited to one figure.
I guess the big question is why Lego went with a GWP than any actual sets. I get that it'd be risky to have an entire lineup, but that Takanuva idea as an actual set would be amazing. It looks like its got gear functions and everything.
I really do hope someone reverse-engineers the Takanuva set's gear function at least. Im really curious to see how that works and I want to use that for my own builds
I'd say that a brick based constraction theme is a possibility in the future. LEGO *is* a corporation, so I do think that they'd love to have as much aisles of any given store occupied by their products
@@DioStandProud Well, it probably won't be anything close to Bionicle then, with only the constructible action figure element remaining. LEGO would probably try out constraction again in the future, but without the G1 grognard pandering like they did with G2. Like I said, they are a corporation, so if another consumer base for these kinds of products will be more profitable, they'll ultimately go with them.
Hate to compare apple with orange, but if Hasbro and bandai can make release new transformers and Gundam kits made from scratch year after year, then LEGO shouldn't have problem creating new molds and make new pieces
I saw the Takanuva and the Toa Mata the same day the GWP was revealed, I prefer the Takanuva but it would’ve not been affordable for many of us which is why it didn’t happen. Well with the staff you could always put in the original Staff of Light piece! Always awesome to have TTV and DuckBricks together! I still love the GWP, but I’m going to recreate some of the Toa Mata models and Takanuva, only if we get instructions for that one though. But if I’m honest the other two models sum up BIONICLE more than the one they went with overall, only if we got prints for the masks which actually if we’re going by the two prints restriction then it’s impossible. Well it’s just great to see life being put back into BIONICLE again. And thank you to those at LEGO that love the theme. But if I had to rank them: 1. Takanuva 2. Toa Mata 3. Tahu and Takua 4. Metru Nui (would’ve loved to see a skyline too, if someone could do that) 5. Nuva Cube 6. Kanohi
If they ever revive bionicle I want it to be a distant prequel to the original set on either of the continents. New Toa, new villains, new matoran characters. Set prior to Metru NUI having been built. Give the story tellers freedom to do away with minor lore like the red star where characters went to be repaired and prevented them from being killed off.
I think if there ever was to be a Great Spirit Robot, it’d only be able to sell if it was a massive set where you can actually put maybe minifigures of classic Bionicle characters inside
With the Marvel and DC Constraction figures we're getting nowadays, I'd love to see bionicle in that style. Hear me out. Brick built, full size, and relatively affordable. I have venom and miles next to G2 Tahu and G1 Lewa Nuva and I can't stop thinking about how well they could work in this new style.
The takanuva bothers me because it's bricks trying to fulfill the role of the old system, joints and all, and that feels like a worst of both words situation where I cant really do anything with it because bricks on that scale arent sturdy enough to have much fun with. I love what we got because on that small of a scale an action figure probably has less problems.
Me personally that Takanuva feels too thick for the Bionicle style, but as a Lego Robot Constractiin I really like it. I like how they used a sticker to give the mask face but still built a mask. I also agree Takanuva is not the right character to hook people with.
Im almost certain that takanuva has 2-arm gear function(onua gali) and that beside the 1/2 20z is a technic brick with hole, and I supect that the arms are on 4l axle with stop with the stop resting just inside the pinhole of the axle conecter#3 the head sits on for a tad more strength. if only I had seen this earlier I would have started to build takanuva, but im sure there are already many a good way into it
I fell off after Piraka and Inika. However, I did buy the Bionicle Stars set to celebrate its end back in 2010. Saved up for a whole year for that as a kid. I was a poor college student back when the revival happened so unfortunately I wasn’t able to grab any of those. I really hope Lego see’s the amount of attention this GWP is getting and considers releasing the rest of the Toa mata and Matoran in this style (Jaller included). A straight up re-release of the canisters from the original set with all the original prints and pieces would be the dream. Guaranteed that would sell like crazy.
For the 90th anniversary set, I imagine it would be a large brick built environmental build, with some brick built figures to populate it. I don't think that the SCCBS moc shown in the concept images is neccecarily proof that SCCBS can't work for Bionicle, I also don't think that particular moc is very well executed.
Mega bloks should just make their own version of Bionicle. They already have a system for buildable figures. All they need is "Masks of power" and a cool name. They could call them Meganicles or something.
The pieces aren’t clunky but it sucks that that old system may never come back And the change isn’t for the better, it’s for the worse Without the bionicle pieces it’s not the same And it doesn’t open up any more options as the original had tons of options and the look isn’t the same They can make more pieces for the original pieces I’d rather have the original look than to take away what its soul You do need the pieces as that was part of the look Also they should find a way to keep or easily recreate mold Idk why you all like it so much

As for the 6 Toa concept? It's really cool! I love what we got tough, especially considering there's TWO prints in it
Additionally, if Takanuvas build is more fleshed out, it looks similar in size to the new Spider-Man SCCBS series, so that gives me hope. Maybe some talented MOC-ists could figure something out.
not gonna lie. if Bionicle returned like this i'd be more then game!
Bionicle was my childhood. I can't wait to get this set!
I honestly love the posability and detail of my brick built Tahu. Even if Lego doesn't ever make another Bionicle set, I'd love for a new product line of Lego action figures in this scale.
I haven't watched the entire one hour+ video yet, only some of it (this will take multiple sittings) but there is a sentiment that I wish to express regardless because I don't think any video can change how I feel about this set;
I think you guys got the best experience possible with this GWP that I wish other fans could get.
The intro walk-through is going to give me an aneurism
I really appreciate them sharing with us the Toa Team design. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they look great (to me) and they're simple enough that anyone could easily source parts and build it just by looking at the pictures.
It’d be great to get one a year of each Toa
Whatever they would have done. I would have loved it either way
The bionicle I knew is more than 2001, it's character driven, and the heart of the story is makuta. I couldn't even idly imagine a $400 throwback set and not get the single character I've wanted all my life. It would have to be miramax makuta vs vakama in the sea of protodermis
i would love it if they did a 6 part set of the toa mata with the matoran of the inika in this style all in poses like this tahu.
This is amazing!
This is just soo soo cool bro I'm happy for you all these years of collecting and entertaining us with fun facks and you finally got to interview them soo cool.
really excellent intro!! it was stellar and made me watch the entire video
Great interviews! Now I really want a UCS chain link fence, which I assume would play "Move Along" endlessly on loop
I wouldn't ask for the return of the old bulky pieces. I just want Technic-compatible mixel sockets, which could pave way for smaller scale technic constraction. As technic is bringing in new smaller and smaller panels, there's some room to cost-effectively make small robotic figures.
The moment you brought up the whole "Orange" hinge piece, I was like, don't we have that in Bright Orange? Are we having a Mandela Effect moment?
I was thinking the same thing especially with the SpongeBob pineapple being orange and using a ton of those hinges, but then I remembered they used red hinges instead lol
I knew this was prerecorded when you put out your call for help on Takanuva!
those smaller lego sets at the beginning of all the mata are incredible and honestly wouldve preferred that instead LOL
BIONICLE fans want BIONICLE, amazing construction figures.
Leave that panorama fetish elsewhere, you have any other LEGO theme for that.
@@LegsON So you just ignoring the location sets Bionicle have done in the past huh?
@@hornbylee Do you like people or people's clothes?
Omega Tahu is back!!!!! We need a rerelease of the bionicle is back song, but with a verse that mentions it is in a system style.
I'd love to see someone reverse-engineer the Takanuva concept, I really wanna use it as a base to make some of the titan sets like Axonn or Karzahni, might even make fr a good Makuta Teridax
$450 set? There's only one answer to my mind: Takanuva vs Makuta diorama.
That Takanuva would have been fantastic, especially the torso
i wanna buy a bulk lot because of you, Chris.
keep cooking new videos, bro!
Some of the failed prototypes look really cool!
@@GravityTrash They need to release back images of the prototype, along with maybe the torso inner design work.
I'd say that a brick based constraction theme is a possibility in the future. LEGO *is* a corporation, so I do think that they'd love to have as much aisles of any given store occupied by their products
Except it will sell just as poorly as G2 because the wider Bionicle audience DESPISES literally each and every one of these efforts.
Bionicle set with no Bionicle parts isn't Bionicle
Bingo
But if I had to rank them:
1. Takanuva
2. Toa Mata
3. Tahu and Takua
4. Metru Nui (would’ve loved to see a skyline too, if someone could do that)
5. Nuva Cube
6. Kanohi
The 6 Mata builds also really remind me of the old Turaga builds for whatever reason.
That place is heaven. My goodness.
Stressed me out unnecessarily watching him walk through his Lego room backwards.
A possibility for the big expensive Bionicle set could be a big detailed mosaic map of Mata Nui island.
That would literally be physically impossible
0:41 going to be honest, I kind of got nervous when you passed that LEGO Eiffel Tower. One stray elbow, and that thing is going down.
I think the Super Robot Creator 3 in 1 set is kind of reminiscent of Tahu Nuvaaside from the color scheme and toa tool
watching the intro.....you better pray you never have an earthquake
I like what we got altho I wish it was easier to get hold of but that takanuva is really coool!
Oh well, I will sit on the Cube and Takanuva, though images from the back would help.
That $400 dollar Bionicle set could be a massive Takanuva vs. Makuta
And do what with it exactly when for not even $100 you can buy their original sets?
I would be shocked if they announce we will get the other 5 Toa Mata. Would definitely throw my wallet at them!
Mixels didn't sell well, so let's use that style to bring back a once popular theme!
I feel like it’d be the fusion version of the bionicle comps.
The takanuva bothers me because it's bricks trying to fulfill the role of the old system, joints and all, and that feels like a worst of both words situation where I cant really do anything with it because bricks on that scale arent sturdy enough to have much fun with. I love what we got because on that small of a scale an action figure probably has less problems.
i really love the super robot tahu design, if they did bionicle g3 like this i would buy all of them
I'll be working on the Metru Nui map, I'll send it through Discord
Ah thank you but somebody else already did it! I’ll update the description
how can you upload so fast
holy damn
you must get no sleep ever
In order to get more of these, maybe we need a Criterion Collection of the BIONICLE trilogy?
I just want lego to acknowledge bionicle's existence
honestly i wouldn't mind that they release all 3 bionicle generations but brick built. to be honest i think that they'd sell well as standalone kits
But they wouldn't lmao
What makes Bionicle is the BIONICLE TECHNIC PARTS. Coping with bricks ain't it for the rest of us.
Me personally that Takanuva feels too thick for the Bionicle style, but as a Lego Robot Constractiin I really like it. I like how they used a sticker to give the mask face but still built a mask.
I also agree Takanuva is not the right character to hook people with.
Im almost certain that takanuva has 2-arm gear function(onua gali) and that beside the 1/2 20z is a technic brick with hole, and I supect that the arms are on 4l axle with stop with the stop resting just inside the pinhole of the axle conecter#3 the head sits on for a tad more strength. if only I had seen this earlier I would have started to build takanuva, but im sure there are already many a good way into it
Gold for my eyes
I fell off after Piraka and Inika. However, I did buy the Bionicle Stars set to celebrate its end back in 2010. Saved up for a whole year for that as a kid. I was a poor college student back when the revival happened so unfortunately I wasn’t able to grab any of those. I really hope Lego see’s the amount of attention this GWP is getting and considers releasing the rest of the Toa mata and Matoran in this style (Jaller included). A straight up re-release of the canisters from the original set with all the original prints and pieces would be the dream. Guaranteed that would sell like crazy.
*MY GOD* did my anxiety rise as he was walking backwards among all those lego sets!!
I would want a display set with the toa the mctoran a few small rocks and trees but mostly the temple where they first met in the commercial
For a 450 set I could see them doing one or two entire Toa teams in a system building style.
When you walk backwards near the legos do you ever worry about running into them?
I’m working on the Metra Nui map, hope I can get it done quick
51:08 Theres The detail for a 2023-Styled Onua
Instead of the 2x2 plates on the SCCBS Tahu you could use nexo knight shield peace’s in orange
The pieces aren’t clunky but it sucks that that old system may never come back
And the change isn’t for the better, it’s for the worse
Without the bionicle pieces it’s not the same
And it doesn’t open up any more options as the original had tons of options and the look isn’t the same
They can make more pieces for the original pieces
I’d rather have the original look than to take away what its soul
You do need the pieces as that was part of the look
Also they should find a way to keep or easily recreate mold
Idk why you all like it so much
what i would've done for that takanuva ;(
