I always saw Adventure 1 as the true final Classic game. Dreamcast models still have somewhat similar proportions, Tails is a partner in Sonic levels, the most open ended action levels especially Beta Windy Valley, revisited Angel Island locales, levels having a multi act structure, the fact its prototype is the world on Jam. Any new "Classic" games after this entry is what I consider "Neo Classic", where the game tries to emulate the classic aesthetic but fails to see the wider scope of possibility possible with the original Classics
I do wonder though what a classic Sonic game would be like. Imagine it being open-world, that would be incredible especially considering Classic Sonic’s world has so much creative potential
@@avanagenda5840 Yeah Sonic Utopia did a really good job at making Open World Classic Sonic 3D however I would love to see something official with a story, tons of boss battles and enemies, loads of playable characters and a lot of creative unique levels.
fun fact: srb2 WAS actually released or heck even shown in the 90s with the halloween tech demo info that srb2 the past mod provides (it restores everything from the past and its a blast to the past)
I got ecstatic literally the moment you were about to say Sonic Robo Blast 2. That’s basically the only fan game I ever play and it’s my favorite of all time. I could probably write an entire essay where all I do is rave about how great this fan game is. Although I’ll admit I’m a little biased because I used to play this game every single day…..and I downloaded a whole overflowing treasure chest of mods on our family iMac because that’s how much I loved it. So in that sense it’s nostalgia for me. And it all started when AntDude made a video about Sonic fan games. SRB2 was in that video. That’s how my obsession was born.
I fall into Group C, but I still do like Classic Sonic more (surprising, I know). I came into the franchise through Sonic Generations, but I didn't play it when it came out; I played it many years later. I would still like to see a 3D Classic Sonic game to see if it's something I'd want or if I would've preferred the direction they actually took.
i really enjoyed the final segment of this video, where you dig into why sonic is the way he is today, being that they, whether we like it or not, have kept up with what is considered “cool and different.” definitely not my preferred sonic, but i will say, the shift is very understandable.
The thing that so many people miss is that Sonic Adventure actually is a Classic Sonic game. The character redesigns weren't intended to create a distinction between Classic and Modern at the time, but were just meant to be updated appearances to suit the new decade that was fast approaching, and the original Dreamcast version of the game used a character design for Sonic in-game that's much more akin to his classic appearance with some more modern attributes applied on top, while the DX version released later leans more into the lankier proportions. The gameplay is also entirely designed around the mentality of being a Classic Sonic game, but in 3D. SEGA used the mentality that the two Sonic's were in fact one in the same all the way up through Sonic Colors, with the dev team even stating that Sonic's design in Sonic 4 Episode 1 was because that was just how he would look in HD. While obvious BS to us now, I don't think this quote was intended as a lie but rather was just a reflection of their perspective on things. They didn't see the newer design as anything other than the updated look for Sonic, not as something distinct. It was all just "Sonic". Keep in mind that it was the updated look for Sonic and friends that was also used in the Sonic Advance games, which were also designed to be similar to the Classic titles since that's just how Sonic controlled in 2D at the time. It was Generations that finally officially coined the terms "Modern Sonic" and "Classic Sonic" as two distinct designs that were being used separately from each other. It's the impact that this had on the fandom that has spread confusion on the matter. Sonic Adventure isn't a "Modern Sonic" game, and was never meant to be. It was intended as the proper transition of Classic Sonic into 3D, complete with a sleek new look.
Well there's alot of other Classic Sonic imagery in Sonic Adventure I.E extra life icon, the sonic themed pinball table in casinopolis, and the various Sonic 3D Blast songs present in the game, even the storyboard of the first cutscene used Classic Sonic
I was 13 in 1999 and I don’t remember anybody having a problem with the new Sonic design. We were too busy playing the awesome demo for Sonic Adventure.
I guess I'm part of the extra rare group D then, I'm older than this franchise but never really cared about Sonic during the 90's and only got into the games during the early to mid 2000's and since then I've been slowly catching up to the ever growing mountain of games in the series. So to me there being more than one interpretation of the character isn't just normal, it's part of the appeal. To me the long-lost dream-game for Sonic would be one that captures the vibes of the classic titles in 3D, not just the bright colors and geometric shapes but the sense that the world is subtly but tangibly alien and almost surreal, something that gives the same feeling as that moment in the intro of CD when it's shown that Little Planet is literally chained to the main planet, or that scene in the OVA when the Tornado dives into the precipice and the world underneath the floating islands is revealed but you can still see the massive shadows casted by said floating islands up above. I actually really liked Lost World because the Lost Hex had that whole vibe of a weird world that just is and one's expected to just accept it and move on, but the writing really dropped the ball in almost every cutscene, at least the gameplay is fun and varied (sometimes too varied, like that extra level when Sonic is chased by a fluffy pacman knockoff). But a game that pretty much nailed it was last year's Lunistice, which is a classic 3D Sonic fan-game in all but name and characters, kinda like what Freedom Planet was for 2D back in the days before Mania.
When my mom and I first saw "modern Sonic", we thought hew as supposed to be a caricature of the original Sonic. But no, he was on official Dreamcast merch and box art.
Grew up on genesis sonic/cd, but the change in appearance never bothered me. Never really realized it was a point of contention amoung people. The only one that made me kinda "ehhhh" was from the first live action movie and they fixed that right quick lol. Pretty sure everyone was kinda grossed out by that design, had an uncanny valley look to it.
Currently working on a Mario 64 mod called Sonic Mushroom Blast which intends to play strictly like classic sonic. The physics are finished but so far, it's mostly reworked vanilla 64 levels. I do intend to sprinkle in some original levels here or there, (most particularly remixed Sonic R levels), but I am very open for suggestions with the direction if anyone is interested.
Your videos get better and better with time. So many great insights and jokes that consistently land. Editing and pacing is also stronger than 95% of people making similar vids. Keep em coming 👍
Sonic Robo Blast 2 is THE interpretation of 3D Classoc Sonic. It started development BEFORE Sonic Adventure 1. When they started they only had the classic games to look to for inspiration. Obviously the game has been upgraded and evolved and is still actively being developed, but Robo Blast 2 still absolutely plays more like a Classic Sonic game than anything else. From the level design to mechanics to even the character designs. Hell even the 3D Models you can turn on, are very Saturn-Era inspired and more closely resemble the Classic Look. The game doesn't even feature a homing attack. Because again, when the game started, the homing attack didn't even exist yet. (Outside of the shield in 3D Blast) So yeah Sonic Robo Blast 2. And it is basically a top tier Sonic game at this point. So I would love to see an official take on a 3D Classic game for sure!
@Ryno Behnke SRB2 development switched to the Doom Engine in July 1998. Adventure 1 released in Japan in December 1998. But yeah, the actual first public release of SRB2 didn't release until October 1999, so about a month after the US release of Sonic Adventure.
I believe sonic x-treme has been homebrewed on the saturn either this or last year, not sure if when it was released is correct, it might be even earlier but it was deffinetly homebrewed
Actually, there is more evidence for Sonic Adventure still using the classic designs after moving to the Dreamcast that you didn't mention: -The low-poly models in Sky Chase actually *were* the Sonic R models originally. Early beta footage shows close ups of the models where they still have the same textures from Sonic R. -The storyboards for the cutscenes (specifically for the opening of Sonic's story) still used the classic designs. -Even in the final game the 1-up icon and the 'beat Sonic in a race' mission card show renders of a higher poly Classic Sonic model that isn't seen anywhere else. -The only other place this higher poly model is seen is from a leaked render/concept art for Windy Valley, which seems to suggest the development of the game on the Dreamcast was far enough along for models to be made before the redesign happened.
I was there when Sonic Adventure first got announced and released. It's odd how people now refer back to that time as the creation of Modern Sonic, like he is a new character different to Xlassic Sonic. I know that's apparently the canon Sega is pushing now, but at the time NO ONE viewed it that way, not the fans and not Sega. The Sonic in Sonic Adventure was just Sonic, the same Sonic from S3&K, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, etc. He got a redesign, sure, but he also got a redesign from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2, from 2 to 3, from 3 to 3D Blast, in the comics, and in the cartoons. To us, Sonic Adventure Sonic was just Sonic. Sure, the edited some details like they did all the time before, but no one thought of him as a new character.
I'm firmly in group C, especially since I grew up with both classic and modern at the same time. I had a GameCube with Heroes and Mega Collection so the idea of there being two versions never clicked with me. To me, they were both just "Sonic" If anything, I roll my eyes at those in group B. First off, you really had nothing better to do in the time it takes for someone to be born AND finish college? Second, these people really attacked anyone who liked 3D (mostly kids who did) and developed a superiority complex when Sonic Mania came out because they felt vindicated for never letting go of the past.
Yeah the group I was in is the group of okay well sure I grew up in the '90s and remember what Sonic looks like back then but when I saw his change of design it didn't bother me. I didn't even really think about it. Then when I saw people complain about that change of design, I thought that was hilarious because it's like okay well the fact is Sonic's eyes originally didn't really make much sense because they were just black long lines. Adding green eyes actually made sure he had character more so than he did previously. It also makes more sense that he'd be skinny since he runs so fast.
I still don't know if Sonic 3D blast can be considered a 3D game. Yes, you move "in 3D space" and it has 3D in the title, but in reality it's just 3D sprites and you're basically still moving in 2D space. You just don't just go left or right anymore, you go up and down and I tried the game. You still don't have full control over that space. If it was Sonic battle in fight mode, okay. But this doesn't feel like 3D at all. And I'm not counting the Saturn version because it's only a port and the special stages on the Genesis weren't honestly 3D. I could then say that Sonic CD is the first game to try 3D space.
I gotta be honest. After sonic frontiers, I don't think the target audience will be little kids for a while. Like if you played sonic frontiers and said it was for 3 year olds, you are in hard denial
I'm a '90s baby but part of Group C cos my first Sonic game was Sonic Adventure. I vaguely recall trying Sonic 2 on a cousin's Mega Drive (the Genesis' name here in SEA), but I didn't like the more-complicated-than-Mario gameplay. Took me quite a while to understand, master, and fully appreciate the momentum-based gameplay.
As someone who falls into Group C, (who was introduced into the series via generations but liked Classic Sonic more), I can summarize the modern/Classic debacle with this: *YOU* like Classic Sonic because of nostalgia and that he doesn’t have green eyes. *I* like Classic Sonic because of the simpler, shorter, chubby, and overall more iconic and cuter design. *We are not the same.*

Hay matt Look that suggestion is maybe the worst in the world but can you review Sonic Omens I know about the Contorversey behind it and I know about all the proplems but since It's done can you review it since you are an open minded person
I do plan on talking about Sonic Omens soon. I'm not going to be talking about the drama however because the drama doesn't affect the game's quality in any form. I'll be looking at the game from an unbiased perspective of a Sonic fan wanting to play a Sonic fan game.

Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a 3D classic game. That's it, that's the game.
I'm still kind of conflicted who I prefer, to this date it's always been modern sonic but lately I've been seeing the shine in the little blue guy, also classic sonic is the only version of sonic I've learned to draw under 20 minutes.
Unleashed was before the Meta Era though??
Utopia is still on development?! Better Lange still in charge or riot
I agree. Sonic unleashed is the best sonic game
You forgot to me sino that in sonic adventure there is a texture of one of the mission in the final game with the old classic sonic model (go search it up)
Love the Sonic Unleashed best sonic game
Day 186 of asking for a sonics schoolhouse video
Still don’t know how u don’t have 10 million subs
0:03 I’m not any of that Matt, I don’t care about Sonic, shove it up and be quiet! Especially since 1999, I was still too young to play video games, I would get into gaming in 2001, and even then, it’s not Sonic I got into.
Final count was 16 I think 🤔
I’m 37. Got to the end of the video and subscribed due to the Unleashed gospel. Go off, king-preach truth!
ITS TIME
SRB2 has been a thing since 1998.
I also fall into Group C.
Here's some footage of Sonic Adventure unveiling and Sonic using his Jam model for the Sky chase cutscene:

I wonder how many people got introduced to SRB2 because of AntDude…….considering that video has 1.2 million views…….
18:37 Yup.
I like both of sonic classic and modern and im not a hater
Something tells me I'm not the target audience of this video....
Day 188 of asking for a sonics schoolhouse video
i subbed👍
Since when did classic sonic have brown eyes there where always black
I like classic sonic in modern sonic, but do you think it would be cool if there was a plastic sonic game any classic sonic game 3-D classic sonic gay
12:34 Well it can run in 32x so ig we'll can in the future?
Which groups are you guys in? I’m in group C.
I hate that beanie.
Same.
:(
Hay matt
Look that suggestion is maybe the worst in the world but can you review Sonic Omens I know about the Contorversey behind it and I know about all the proplems but since It's done can you review it since you are an open minded person
I do plan on talking about Sonic Omens soon. I'm not going to be talking about the drama however because the drama doesn't affect the game's quality in any form. I'll be looking at the game from an unbiased perspective of a Sonic fan wanting to play a Sonic fan game.
yeah!sonic unleashed is the best sonic game of all times obviously it's even my favourite game of all times and better than sonic generations (i am not trash talking i really love that game but honestly i would rather play sonic '06)
Sonic adventure is the only sonic game that will remain close to the Genesis titles
wooooooo big fan
Ya know that sonic superstars is 3d classic sonic
great
SONIC ROBO BLAST 2!
2.5D Classic Sonic now exists, Sonic Superstars. I don't know if I like it or not because as you know Classic Sonic's Generations Model is like the official model for Classic Sonic and the model is shit.
The ending 😂
Those eyes look black to me... what?
SA1 Was released in 1998 sooo in 1999 SA1 was already released
My script says 1998 but my brain read it as 1999.
