11:54 Classic games did in fact have some form of water running, at least in Sonic 3 Hydrocity, it was scripted and you couldn't really do much to control it but it's there. And the CD intro, sort of? had him running on water, not really, more like failing around until he got to solid ground again.
Water running in sonic 3 actually wasn’t scripted. You could do it by spin-dashing off of water leveled platforms in stages like ice cap act 2 carnival night act 2, angel island, and launch base act 2 to name a few
@Sonic It's more to do with surface tension and force applied. If something is light enough and it only stays on water for an incredibly short amount of time per step, then it can push itself off the surface without sinking too much.
Classic Sonic's levels often feature him rounding corners or making 90 degree turns, so it does make sense he has full 3D motion. In 3D, his Spindash works by taking the axis of movement from the previous 2D area he was in and sending him along that path - which is what causes the unreliability in 3D. This also means it'll crash if you haven't been in 2D beforehand.
@Joshua Bertty It's unlocked as a Skill when you get all the red rings in Classic Planet Wisp (so Jungle Joyride in this mod). Channel Pup talks about the homing attack in the video, did you not watch it?
Doing these levels as classic Sonic really kind of actually makes him more believable as the younger version of modern Sonic as was intended originally (he's raw in his movements yet ungraceful, generally slower but capable of reaching max speeds as great as his counterpart, and his spin dash is trickier for him to control).
@@Sydney_Angelyt The Sonic Character needs to grow up. At least make him 20 years old. Rogers portrayal od Sonic fits as a matured young adult who can do such capable things, but they can never own up aging the character at all.
It is a weird kind of reverse-age. Classic sonic was supposed to be 15, but the issue with that is that modern sonic is 15 and there is literally a 4 year timegap between knuckles chaotix and sonic4(if one considers these games canon, otherwise it is between sonic3 and SA1) because Amy is 8 in CD and 12 in SA1. Because modern sonic makes more sense as a teenager than an adult, we take 15-4, which is 11....and that is now classic sonics new age. Modern sonic also has had two birthdays in gens and runners, making him 17 and aging everyone else up by 1 because you cannot have two birthdays without everyone else getting older too. Moral of the story is that Sonics saga went from his kid-days to him now being almost of legal age, yet Sega still wrongly claims that he is 15 because they put less effort into continuity than the fans.
7:20 That's because modern and Sonic starts off on a spline. Which is basically like an invisible rail that he must follow and then once the game starts then it allows you to move left and right. But because modern Sonic in this case is already in 2D format you can't move in 3D space until the game converts you again to a later 3D section
Funfact for the classic sonic skateboard part, if you press NOTHING while on the whale he will make the jump. If you press forward you gain too much momentum and will crash into the wall before the tail flick can send you high enough. (And insert classic sonic having access to homing attack via skills comment here). Also Cool Edge is doable, the devs showed in one of their vids that you have to take an alternative path. That dashpad was sadly unfixable. But all levels are indeed finishable as classic sonic. Even if you have to take different routes.
@FuckOuttaHere nah, he is right, they can be compleated by classic sonic too, i can prove it. also empire city is possible too. all of those levels without homing attack
And yet he didn't use the mod that would let him use the spindash in 3d because if he did then it would truly have been a testament to the classic games.

I so enjoy how you have an analytical, yet humorous approach to every one of your videos and topics, it makes me love even those of your videos that are about topics I'm not really all that interested in :D
The fire shield has a boost-like capability if you hold the jump button to jet yourself near the ground, the bubble shield has a stomp-like capability. Of course, using either means no homing attack for you.
The jetski in Cool Edge is a modification of the board from the intro of City Escape, which corresponds to Classic Sonic's skateboard power-up. Therefore, you get a skateboard.
That three-string of bots on the clock tower in original Unleashed, I ALWAYS try to bounce instead of Homing attack and whenever I actually pull it off it's SO satisfying
Seeing this reminds me of an old theory (not sure if it was every confirmed or disproved) that originally, Sonic Generations was going to have every level fully playable as either Sonic.
great video but I want to mention a few things that actually make the game fully beatable with classic 1. rooftop run can be beaten without the homing attacks, the enemy bounce section you got stuck on is just pretty tight 2. skyscraper scamper/empire city can be beaten without the homing attack, if you jump off the rails early you can land on the rails at the end of this section, skipping the enemy bouncing section entirely 3. cool edge can be beaten if you take the top path in the 2d section. to touch the red ring (which lets you play on the top path), you need to use the dash pad before the ramp and then use either the airdash from the homing attack skill/fire shield, or use the double jump from the thunder shield. this lets you skip the glitchy loop 4. arid sands can be beaten, the wall running with classic sonic is very weird, but if you just slightly press back (or just don't hold forward? I'm not sure) you have just enough time to avoid the rock, and then the rest of the level is easy
If you collect all 5 Red wings in the plant Wisp act 1 you can unlock the homing attack for classic Sonic as an ability that you can equip him for every act 1 in the game.
tutorial is actually available for classic sonic. For some reason, the tutorial and windmill isle is swapped for classic sonic, so if you enter windmill isle as classic sonic you will enter tutorial and vice versa
The bobsled in this mod is actually the City Escape board with a different "skin". It's functionally the same (but the drifting is disabled). So it makes sense that Classic would also have his City Escape board in Cool Edge If you replace the mod's "SonicHoloska" files with the vanilla game's "SonicBoard" files, you'd replace the bobsled with the board, which's exactly what I did cos Sonic's iceboarding looks cooler than his bobsledding, haha. You can do the reverse to have the bobsled in City Escape (with the drifting enabled), but I haven't tried it yet.
Kinda late but actually both Sonics got full 3D movement as the 2D sections in game arent actually 2D in the sense of the traditional ones but an extremely compressed in the Z axis area where you can run with both characters. You can get them to face towards you or the oppossite with certain glitches as a result.

4:34 Um... Couldn't you just used the spindash here? If one thing doesn't work, try something else. EDIT - No, you couldn't. Shame on me for commenting too early in the video, I guess XD
A couple of things: Classic can play Windmill Isle act 1 by selecting act 2 as classic Sonic. A second thing is that classic does get the homing attack making stuff like the clock tower better, you get the homing attack by getting the 5 red rings in windmill isle act 2 (the tutorial) also what I think those long stretches are in 2D for is to let you able to Spin Dash (i could be wrong I'm not a programmer after all)
within the past month, a 3d spindash fix was released, makes it way more playable lol. lets you control direction (and change direction while charging ala sa1 and 2) and fixes the crash obviously edit: also i was 100% able to make it through rooftop run as classic sonic, that segment you couldn't do just needs a running start from around the corner, and hold forwards + jump, no spindash required.
Now hold up, roof top run might be impossible for now, but I have a solution Before you enter the 2D section that comes before the tower, there is a glitch that is hard to pull off but helps you in the process... When you grab the handle to pull you up to the roof tops, try to let the first robot hit you, run back but do not fall off the building, instead stuck to the corner edge, and make your way to the right side, if jumping does not work slowly walk to the edge. Jump on the building next to the one you where just on and move forward, you skip a 2D trigger and so you have 3D movement, it can vary over to the next checkpoint, before the bounce pad that shoots you towards the tower, jump off to the road under the tower, this skips the tower and let's you continue the level... This might be hard to pull off but it works well! If you have discord I can send you a video explaining the glitch, but with modern sonic since I don't have a pc...

I remember being able to complete all the stages (using the Homing Attack Skill) as Classic Sonic.
So nobody has heard of the mod that fixes the spindash problem and finally let's you use it in 3d no just me okay.
omg rooftop run with classic Sonic is possible. I recorded video where its clearly possible.
every level is playable, you just need some skill and practice
17:53 he sounds like an angry bird 😂
i managed to bounce on all the enemies in rooftop runs clock tower first try by total accident thinking "lets see where i go w this"
In jungle joyride it was so funny with the noises that you were making😂
Laughs in Arid Sands actually being beatable if you press left as soon as you land
4:34 Um... Couldn't you just used the spindash here? If one thing doesn't work, try something else. EDIT - No, you couldn't. Shame on me for commenting too early in the video, I guess XD
I was laughing everytime you thought something intentional was a bug or error-
THIS WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!
I had no idea just how vast the difference in speed between classic Sonic and Sonic unleashed .
A couple of things: Classic can play Windmill Isle act 1 by selecting act 2 as classic Sonic. A second thing is that classic does get the homing attack making stuff like the clock tower better, you get the homing attack by getting the 5 red rings in windmill isle act 2 (the tutorial) also what I think those long stretches are in 2D for is to let you able to Spin Dash (i could be wrong I'm not a programmer after all)
the way that the spindash works in 3d is that it will shoot you in the direction you were facing in the last 2d section
“I’m sorry, but you have to perish”
Sonic the Bubonic
within the past month, a 3d spindash fix was released, makes it way more playable lol. lets you control direction (and change direction while charging ala sa1 and 2) and fixes the crash obviously
edit: also i was 100% able to make it through rooftop run as classic sonic, that segment you couldn't do just needs a running start from around the corner, and hold forwards + jump, no spindash required.
I really enjoyed this video. Its an intressting and fun challenge, pls do more
Yeah A mod Of Me In Sonic Unleashed?! Wow! Now I Need A Werehog Level!
That intro was awsome.
Now hold up, roof top run might be impossible for now, but I have a solution
Before you enter the 2D section that comes before the tower, there is a glitch that is hard to pull off but helps you in the process...

15:14 look at him go
Dragon Road looks pretty good from a 2D perspective, they should make a similar themed zone if they make another 2D Sonic game in the future.
