How to make an extra extra long hex socket tool:

* Use grease made for forks. I use Slickoleum which is also sold under the name Slick Honey. You can also use SRAM Butter or Judy Butter. If the fork uses oil, use the proper fork oil. Use of a grease/oil not made specifically for forks can damage the plastic/polyurethane parts, or otherwise leave the fork not working properly.

t's pointless exercise greasing the plungers as they are bathed in fork oil. The other issue is the bushings and seals were not removed and checked for wear. These need to be checked and in most cases replaced along with the plunger seals when servicing. The problem with coating every thing in a wet oil forks is you can change the viscosity of the fork oil and change the characteristics of the operation over time. Not replacing seals can result in leaky forks. The one time you should have applied grease you didn't i.e. the fork bearings.
There is a small play between the lower part of fork the black ones and the silver ones may be because the sleeves are made of rubber. When i apply front brake the lowers move formard. Can u help me my bike is just 6 months used and in genuine condition
@@mr.chiefloafer3662 Your bike is 6 months old and has Rock Shox Jett XCs on it?
Hi there RJ hope you are well.
This is completely off topic but I just wanted to ask for any ideas you may have or past experience of this kinda problem.
I recently picked up a early 90's Trek composite 2200 road frame of the Bay of E, it was very cheap due to it being listed with a stuck, none drive side crank arm.
In my infinite wisdom I thought this would be easily solvable, but when it arrived I was faced with a scenario that I hadn't anticipated.
its a campag crank with a self extracting crank bolt, the head of the bolt is completely rounded off, at a present I'm unable to free the screw in extractor part also.
Any ideas of how to proceed would be greatly appreciated and I'm not bothered about saving the crank arm or BB, I just want to remove and replace them.
Thank you in advance.👍🚴😊
@@michaelfowell223 This is one of those things where you are just going to have to try stuff. Maybe use a dremel tool on the bolt to cut something for a tool to fit.
Great video as usual RJ! Been a avid cyclist for years but after watching your repair video's for the last 5 years I now work at my local bike shop part time. Keep up the good work!
Thanks RJ. I’m new to MTB and your videos make what many of us would decide as too difficult to attempt, very straightforward processes. My 99 GT Backwoods has the same fork so I’ll be following this video again as I give them a service.
Thank you RJ. Another awesome video. I'm replacing the shifters/brakes on my old Giant ATX 760 using one of your videos. Great bike for 20 bucks!
Simple and easy steps to follow for dismantle and assembly... that's why you are so watchable✔👍love these vids.
Thinking about swapping out the hard for with Rox Shox on my ancient Specialized Rock Hopper. This video convinced me to do so!
Thanks, RJ!
Keep in mind, that if you replace a rigid fork with a suspension for, it will raise the front end of your bike and change the geometry of the bike.
Your videos are nice and easy to follow. You taught me a lot. Besides ParkTool and BikemanforU, you are the best on youtube.
Pity Bikemanforu gave it up.
@@derekhobbs1102 yeah ,liked his videos a lot
i watched few bikemanfor you clips....he talks too much around the topic....you just get lost in the process..... the park tool videos are awesome too..but focusing too much only on new bikes and tools for it.... rj is just the golden middle... great videos...
i just put hand on a rockShox fork. Instead of trying to find the all the srews and bolt the manufacure hid in the fork you sit back have a beer and watch RJ. Then I knew what to do and what tool to have, borrow or make. If you ever make it to GERMANY I would be proud to show you my shop. Thank you for this vid.
I have never even been Europe. Hoping to make to Spain next year.
you should do a video of all the "custom made" tools you created over the years. I probably need those too and it´s another extremely helpful video.

Finally, the extra extra long homemade hex socket at work!

your a genius to remember where all those parts go , and in what order.
This isn't that many parts. Check this out: ruclips.net/video/oHHaajDcL_g/видео.html
doing it twice :) Ilove It!! Been ther so often!
Ready! And there is one lonely sealing on the table ...
Thanks - really appreciate the detail - you show all the steps 🚴
I've got some RST TR PRO I SL7 FORKS which are "buzzing" internally when I ride the bike. I have had problems finding instructions on how to dismantle them. The Rock Shock forks you service in this video look very similar, being assembled from the top, the only visible external differences are that mine has a lock-out on the R/H leg and a disc brake mount as well as the V brake mounts. Other than that they look identical but just with with different branding badges. So now I will go ahead and attempt to service forks using your techniques from your Video. By the way - Excellent Video, I enjoyed it.
Sounds can be coming from anywhere and sound like they are coping from someplace else.
I have a '99 Rock Shox Jett T2 that I can't find any online service info., it looks almost identical so I'm going to follow your procedure. We have the same snowblower- mine is 20 yrs. old now, we had a brutal winter and I may have to finally replace her. Thanks for your postings RJ!
I bought the snow thrower used in about 2002. It had only been used a few times, and looked new. I just replaced the friction wheel a few weeks ago. It was worn completely down to the metal holding plates. Ack! It still starts on the first pull most times.
That was great RJ. Learned a lot. Thanks
i used to wath rj`s videos and the next day going into my garage an work on my bike.....even with things im sure i can do by myself...is always nice to have a reference and double check the step in process...best bike mechanic !!
Thanks for all. The cool a DIY tool tips. I just picked up my first Gary Fisher. The Stickers wore off the suspension fork. I can't tell what model they are. Any tips Thanks
I haven't clicked on the notification bell and i get notification on my phone every time you upload a video
Cool. Not sure why. Everything I have read is that no bell, no notifications.
Great as usual, couple of points: treathlocker is suposed to dry without air thus while bolted in. Beside I don't see the point in greasing a spring that goes in oil bath, yand ou contaminante the oil.
These are right from the Rock Shox service doc for this fork:
"12. Apply a thin layer of New and Improved Judy Butter to the surface of the upper bushings and fill the pocket between the lips of the Resi-wiper seal completely"
"14. Next, place medium strength locking compound (blue Loc-tite) on clean, dry threads of plunger bolt and allow to dry."
"16. Replace oil inside the lower tubes. Both 63 and 75mm travel Jett's come standard with 85cc's of RockShox Extra Light oil. "
"18. Apply New and Improved Judy Butter to the entire spring stacks, completely cover the coil springs"
RJ The Bike Guy Spot on! I'm in the USAF 🇺🇸 and if you skip steps from a checklist something else will inevitably fail. Mechanical Engineers use their knowledge in designing these systems. Modifying these will normally lead to bad things later...unless you understand the 'why';-) Then modify away!-) Thanks RJ
This is very interesting... Oil bath and grease in the instructions... oil will disolve the grease over time??
Thank you another very interesting video and what a lovely Bike.
Best thing about you is that you show what to do when things don't go as they would need to go.(bad english)
EDIT:can you tell me how you clean your hands after messy bike repair?
Soap and water. Maybe a scrub brush. This stuff works pretty well: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000CCOK6Q/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
Is a RST suspension fork that does not have bolts at the lowest ends similar to this one?
Awesome video.i'm not talking English but i understand everything.
Nice demonstration RJ ...😐👍🔧
Nice video! Will you show us how to service a newer fork with air shock?
Manolis Papadimitropoulos I would love to see an air fork getting serviced too.
Tip: On the socket used to remove the plastic hex caps, grind the chamfer off the end of the socket so there will be more surface area to grip the sides of the hex socket and less chance of rounding the corners off.
Good idea, but I have never had a problem. They are generally not that tight, and there is adequate surface area for the mating.
I've had to grind the socket chamfer off for shallow aluminum motorcycle fork caps. You DON"T want to round those off.
Are these similar to the Jett T2 shocks?
Can you do a video about 24” forks, or modifying a 26” fork with disk brakes to have a suitable crown to axle distance for a 24” bike?
I probably won't be working on a 24" fork anytime soon. But if you check my fork overhaul playlist, you might find something similar: bit.ly/ForkOverhauls
I see so many forks where those accordion style boots are torn/destroyed. Hard to find replacement boots. Trying to modify a Suntour SR dust wiper.
It works! I bought a pair of Suntour 25mm dust seals and slid them onto the stanchion. In themselves, they won't seat without popping out when you compress and release the fork. Solution! With the seal still installed on the fork i took a dremel with 1mm thick cutting disk and cut a small groove all the way around by slowly rotating the seal and holding the dremel in place. Now the dust seal stays in and gives the fork a modern look.

very strait to the point as always RJ... it would be nice if you could get hands on and service an double crown fork... i have an old rock shox judy xlc with double crown..similer to that in the video...coil and oil bath...once i removed it from the bike...and putting it back on..i noticed a gap between upper cup and the bearing cover.... doesnt look like i made an mistake putting it back together....everything works fine..but im pretty shore there was no gap before... no idea why...
Sounds like something was installed incorrectly.

Thanks for the information. Was just wondering about the rubber o ring seals. Were they fine that didn't need changing or maybe i just missed something. Sorry if you already answered the question. Thanks again.
The only o rings are on the adjuster caps and were no big deal. The wiper/seals were fine.
hey man, could you do a video about roller brakes?
thanks!
Don't double post comments.
Great video. Got a question for you....do you know if the rockshox judy lower is compatible with the rockshox jett?
No idea.
Great Job 👍
@RJ The Bike Guy you mentioned in video that steerer tube is not parallel to the down tubes and angled forward? I have a q21r that I rebuilt and noticed that...I was under impression it was damaged, guess not?
A Rock Shox Q21R should not be angled.
That would account for crown race not seating correctly and continued wobble despite trying my best, correct ?
When does Rock Shox recommend replacing parts or seals? As needed or say every other service? Thanks for the good video.
As needed.
I did this but I had a Rock Shox Judy C. It seemed like the same except the Judy says only put oil on the drive side, 130ml. I noticed you put the same amount. Does that sound right? I’m reading one side might be the damper and other side the the spring?
Different forks are different.
...stop everything..R.J's on!...
LOL!
You make it look so easy. If I was doing this, I guarantee the tool would fall off the socket and get stuck in the fork tube forever. 😟😤😲😉

Hi RJ, have you ever repaired a Rockshox dropout? I've got (magnesium) Mag21 fork and one of the teeth has broken off :( my gut feeling is it's toast and I need to find another lower somewhere. What do you reckon?
Yeah, probably not worth try to fix.
Ich habe die gleiche Gabel ich habe gerade die Gabelkrone gewechselt
Hey! I removed my forks from my bike I saw there are two cones on bottom side of steertube one was installed and one free on the first one and the bearings was on that so I removed that second one. So was that cone necessary or was just extra? I am not getting any issues or problem after removing that!
Sorry, there so many variations, I can't tell you if yours is correct, or wrong. My first guess is that the part belongs there. Another possibility is someone did a hack job of replacing something.
Is it necessary to replace the boots? It might update the look without them.
Forks without are made to be without boots. Boots keep the stanchions clean.
Nice done question. I have a fork. White brothers ud150. Well old and can not find any info on oil or parts I know they a few. But at least a oil. I want to rebuild them.
Sorry, I don't know anything about that fork.
It's ok I just reasearch to see if people know anything.
i know...its not the same fork.... but i got something..... very nice fork you have.....UD...stands for upside down.... must be hell of a thing.... there is a link... i hope it helps a bit

Awesome Sir!😊
I really enjoyed your video on how to look for bikes on craigslist but what I'd really like to see is how to google up and buy parts online. I'm especially confused by all the Shimano lines alevio/altus/ultegra/etc and want to buy the best quality part at a reasonable price. I have a fleet of aging bikes that I'd like to keep running for different purposes & utility.
Like yesterday I put a new Shimano UN-55 BB on a vintage chrome moly road bike and after I tightened everything up the front sprocket would not move. I tried a different BioPace ring with the same result. Turns out the front sprocket had so much internal wear that it causes it to jam the smallest sprocket against the frame. At least I think it's an internal wear issue. I'm no expert just a DIYer when a bike breaks. I believe the bike is 3 by 6 or 7. I've seen mtb 3 ring sprockets ACERA going cheap enough. Would it fit properly clearancewise using a MTB part on a road bike? It has the same internal JIS square. Is this a decent quality proven part or just entry level?
Yes, I triple checked the spindle length and shell size. I was upgrading the old bearing & adjustable cup to the newer sealed BB style.
Now I'm thinking of just trying to remove the smallest inner ring just to get the part on the bike in order to get it all working again. Even w/o the hill climbing gears - I don't really need those anyway as this bike is more my commutter downtown beater bike.
But I have horrible luck getting parts online. I got 2 pairs of calipers now which helps some because I'm not used to metric. Which reminds me of another thing: if a cargo rack has bolts that measure 4.5 mm wide at the outtermost part of the threads is that a 5mm bolt?
I was also thinking of trying to shim that JIS square but that doesn't seem real sensible to be solid for the long term.
The Shimano lines are called groups. There are mountain groups and road groups that range from cheap recreational up to professional. The top road groups are 105, Ultegra, and Dura Ace with Dura Ace being the top level that would be on professional level bikes.
Sounds like you may have used the wrong size BB. The spindle length is dicated by the crank set. But the biopace chainrings also might cause issues.
I don't know about your bolts.
Very good....
Do you recommend motorcycle shock oil? Bike specific oil are 5X the price of shock oil from reputable Honda, Kawasaki dealer.
I don't know. I am guessing if the fork oil is light weight like 5w it would be similar.
Look for “maxima plush” line of oils. Maxima is a motorcycle oil people but they have a line of bicycle oils. They are very affordable and made for bicycle forks.
my Jett Manual says to put 2 Teaspoons in each one
I don't know what manual you have. This is what I was referencing: www.neebu.net/~khuon/cycling/bikes/GT/1999-Ricochet_Anatomica/jett99.pdf
Why don’t people use boots anymore? It seems like it would really prolong the service period with no dirt getting in, and prevent scratches
They probably have better wipers on newer forks to replace the boots.
@@RJTheBikeGuy The problem is the wipers generally hold grit due to lubricants and work their way into the seal resulting in abrasion of the fork stanchion and seal. They tend not to be used for weight and for looking dorky.
Would it not be cheeper to get a new fork as theres no real point to overhaul a fork thats super old, especially if your replacing seals ect? Whats your idea
Depends. In this case, I just added new oil and grease.
besides everything else..this fork...very similar to the one i have...is pretty old...mine is from around year 2000... back then common brakes was the v-brake system with the mounting points...it very hard to find new fork with v-brake mounting points..... nowadays its only disc brake......its one of the main reasons why its easyer to service that fork....besides.its pretty simple.... no much tech in it ;)
Hi love your videos , I have a one question how old are you , I am just wondering.
