    I bought the swann system and was having some trouble with the idea of running the wires and how to. I was thinking of running through the attic but wasn't sure. I then thought I could run a conduit outside but that wouldn't look very nice. After watching and noted your method I feel a lot more reassurance to running the wiring through the attic now. Thanks for showing us.

    Thanks for covering the small details. Like I never would have guessed when it says HD 1080p on the box they would pull a fast one and only give you 4 1080p cams. Thanks again for saving me some aggravation, I will look very closely at the boxes.

    Thank you for your replies to what may have seemingly be my dissecting of certain points. None of them were meant nor intended to be taken offensively (not saying that I inferred this from your responses to my initial posting).
    Also again, thank you for sharing not only the videos (trust me: there were some things gathered from them that really hit the nail right on its head!) but some other details that I will not mention in this open forum platform (BEST OF LUCK AND SUCCESS WITH THEM ALL!!!).
    Some info is always better than none, and with you taking your time to construct your DiY vids proved to be very informative and (as you can easily gather by the glowing tags from others, myself included) greatly appreciated!

    Make sure to get the Swann branded BNC extension cables if you need the extra length. I initially purchased Night Owl extension cables and they wouldn't plug into the Swann DVR.

    Note at the 10:50 time stamp. The power supplies did not match up and you noticed something was wrong. Must pay attention to which way you run your power supplies to the outside of house or you will look confused as well. They only plug in one way. GREAT video! Thank you sir.

    Great video. Thanks for posting. I've had several Swann systems and my newest one uses Cat5 cables. I hated the idea of having to replace the BNC cables with Cat5, but what I did was duct tape one end of the Cat5 to the outside end of the BNC cable then pull the wire from where the DVR was and that way I didn't need to go back into the attic. Saved a little bit of time.

    • @locoboof
      @locoboof  8 лет назад

      +Jeff Molin now that's a smart way to do it. Sounds like you've got a NVR. Those cameras using CAT5 produce s better picture in my opinion.

    Nice informative video. I am a security camera installer and actually picked up a couple tid-bits of info about the system that I wasn't aware of since I just do the install and not the setting up of perimeters and preferences, I find it best that the customer do that so that they are familiar with the process.
    There's only one thing that is incorrect with your information and allot of people believe what you stated. You said if a crime is being committed, 9 out of 10 it's at night. I don't know the actual statistic for your area, but I know for sure that that ratio is totally wrong. I used to work for a home security company and MOST of the occurrences actually happened in the day. Ask your local law enforcement for more accurate info. about your area, but you may be shocked.
    Anyway, I enjoyed the video and will refer it to some of my customers to watch. One day, maybe I'll make my own. Thanks and enjoy the upgrade.

      +Vince Gonsalves thanks for the feedback Vince! Also,thanks for watching. If I said that,I do agree with you. Most home burglaries occur during the day while you're working. So,maybe I misspoke. I'm not a professional,just a guy who made a video.

      The cost difference between these and 'professional' ones seems tremendous. Most of us need to stay within a budget, hence why Swann are so popular.
      Swann however do not make the ccd's or the cameras and plenty of other brands, both lower & higher in cost use the same camera technology.
      It is the controller & app that varies significantly within this price range.

    Best video I've watched on the subject so far! You sold me with the ease of setting up the zones and email but then sealed the deal with the HD at night vs the mom HD! The clarity and distance is surprisingly great!
    We live in a rural area in a road that dead ends in my front yard. Only 3 of us in the street but we get a lot of traffic since we are bordering and in the corner of where a national park, wildlife refuge, as well as public land meet.
    We have a lot of shady characters coming around. Arizona's finest methheads!

    do you think the 4 720p cameras are adequate or do you wish you had all 1080p cameras, I'm think of getting this system and wondered if the all 1080p cameras were worth the extra costs.thanks for putting this up I believe you sold me on the swann system.

    • @locoboof
      @locoboof  8 лет назад

      The 720P ones are adequate in my situation. I have them on my porch and in areas where I don't need to see further away. The 1080P cameras you notice more detail. I guess it all depends on how important that detail is to you on all 8 cameras.
      Try Costco first. I hear they have a 8 1080P camera system by Swann for around the same price as this set was when I bought it.

    mate, I might buy this one or wel I want to. Just a couple of questions for you. WHen I ask about this system on "security" sections of forums, they say Swann is cheap crap and dont last a year. THey say to hikvsion, but hikvsion is super expensive. I want this just for the home. Salesmen at my local store that sell these say this is good enough for "home security" I just want to know what is your experience from the day you have installed them? Any reliability issues? Any faults or did any camera's stop working etc?

    I wish we could see how all the cables look from the DVR into the wall for their various cameras. Do you really have eight exposed cables? Did you get them through one big hole in the drywall before distributing? This is the reason I'm only hoping for wireless.

    • @locoboof
      @locoboof  8 лет назад

      My 8 cameras are at various points around my house. They all come into my attic and then they all come into a area of my home where the DVR is hidden from plain site.
      From there I have a 25ft USB cable and 25ft HDMI cable to my office where it's connected to my monitor and mouse. You don't see any wires or cables in my office.
      Wireless is ok to me,but not as clear or consistent and a wired connection. I mean,if that's your only option,then hey,nothing is wrong with it.
      If you do go wireless,make sure you've got a great internet service,awesome router and good wireless signal around your home. Buy wireless extenders if needed.
      I use wireless ones to monitor certain things in my home.

  • @rrr00bb1

    Do you have programmatic access to the video files? What I mean, is the recorder basically just a big external hard drive. The point of a security camera network would be to feed the images to a program for analysis. One that just pushes stuff up to the cloud and only lets you use a proprietary app is useless for my purposes.

    • @locoboof
      @locoboof  6 лет назад

      The NVR is it’s own system. You can rewind, export, playback any and all video files you want. No need for any external hardware or software. Everything is built into the system and ready to go. You can stick in the thumb drive and download any video clips you want to it. Then use those clips any way you want to

    • @rrr00bb1
      @rrr00bb1 6 лет назад

      thanks. my plan was to have a computer constantly poll the drive, and pull a file to run an algorithm to do things like read license plates. it can't have human intervention for doing the read of plates, and then has to be stored in a normal web browser video format like mp4. i wasn't sure about this (none of these guys document anything), and got a 4cam foscam setup. (it's wireless lan, but wired power, in the $350 range, and mentions Windows/OSX web browsers. hopefully it doesn't require a strange flash plugin or something.)

    • @robfielding8566
      @robfielding8566 6 лет назад

      wow... so this foscam camera... it's mostly easy to setup. but when you try to connect with a web browser, only IE is supported. i am on a windows system with Edge (no more IE), and cannot use chrome just to even see the basic web admin. they put the firmware update into the user interface that only loads with a browser that no longer comes with windows - so i can't upgrade the firmware because the UI fails due to an unsupported browser; when i am not trying to even view video... just trying to upgrade the firmware. this is exactly what i was worried about. it had an http port to access, which is awesome. it was all awesome up until i connect with a browser, and now am in a reverse-engineering situation because it won't load at all. view source, and there are comments in chinese, and some javascript i can look at to see if i can work around it. it's always close, but no cigar like this with crappy security products that require activex plugins and specific browsers rather than api standards behind their embedded ui.....
      i wonder if the swann is any better.

    • @rrr00bb1
      @rrr00bb1 6 лет назад

      and it required me to disable all activex security on windows (and still would not install because it thought it was installing already after reboot). i managed to get it working on OSX. it looks like it's pointing to a "web browser" but using UDP rather than files.

    You need to do periodic updates as to how the system is working and holding up over time. Those vids and updates are the most important for consumers. We need to know how an item performs over time, not just a vid when u update the entire system lol.

    Great video... You helped me out a lot... 2 questions for you. First question: What menu steps should I take when extracting video via USB port, what type of thumb drive, can I extract it to a CD. Second question: How do you erase videos from the DVR so you don't exceed the pre-installed 1TB. Wish you would do a video on that...

    • @locoboof

      No need to erase,the 1tb hard drive will just over wright the old data once it becomes full. I think in the instructions it shows how to extract the data.
