"He's driving a modified cop car and is shooting other cars with twin machine guns. Eyewitnesses say he was eating an entire bone-in-cut that he grabbed off the road. You seen him, Hart?"
When you had to fight your way to the airport, I liked imagining it was the scene from Airplane with the pilot fighting off all the religious spokespeople.
I literally just started rewatching the old Ninja Gaiden trilogy series last night to help me fall asleep and I can’t describe how happy I am to see this series lol
Excellent job, MasterTimeTheif. I loved the editing in this one. I love Jon's editing too, and would love to see some comments he makes post-production too. Excellently done :)
Wow, you're really serious about getting this channel up and running again. We've got more content during these last few months than we'd usually get in the span of literal years. I'm glad to see it. I do enjoy TRG, but there's something special about the calmer atmosphere of your solo content.
That “This reminds me of my mercenary days” line reminds me of the line in Star Wars: A New Hope, where Obi-Wan talks about how he fought alongside Darth Vader in the Clone Wars. The film never really brings ‘ The Clone Wars’ up again. But that line also establishes how Obi-Wan knows Darth Vader, that they were in some capacity friends, and adds depth to the world in Star Wars. The mercenary line just doesn’t do any of that, it just kinda says Quinn was a mercenary without informing us about him in any way. He was just a mercenary. And honestly that’s relatable content.
7:30 Really? Not The Messenger? 14:05 To a bird and into a pit. How appropriate for a Ninja Gaiden-like. 19:48 Good to know that Bagel is allowed to come in during recordings.
I'll be honest, until you said it was released in 1991 I thought this was one of those new-fangled 'retro' games. I'm also just in awe at how good it looks. I feel like I've caught a glimpse of some parallel universe's most popular NES game.
As a person that loves writing, I've got to say the Mercenary line is just a little bit of personal world-building for the character to explain why and how he's so good with his weapons. A lot of games have those one lines or even partly delivered statements that are supposed to give the character history. Even in things like Last of Us or ghost of Tsushima, there are random single lines that make you realize that they developed a whole backstory for these protagonists.
I feel like being a part of the drug enforcement agency (assuming Quinn is American) should be backstory enough for why he knows how to use weaponry. America did have a lot of mercenaries around and after the vietnam war though. Several videos on StepBack (formerly Stepback history) talk about this in relation to 70s and 80s white supremacy... it's not the most fun story.
I see what you're saying about the NA box art since you pointed it out, but personally I think he looks more like Kurt Russell who's inbetween "Big Trouble in Little China" & "Stargate".
First time playing alongside one of Jon's LP's! Definitely having to pause a lot so I can catch up though. If there's anything I learned from Ninja Gaiden... it's that I HATE birds in these sort of games lmao
i think that was a different game, can't remember what though. vice was played a while ago by ross and projared i wanna say (although if jared was in it, it wouldn't be up on the channel anymore).
10:38 Damn, my first thought of comparison, was the Punisher Nes game. Anyone else feel me? Not to mention I kinda get some Bayou Billy vibes with all the different parts of Gameplay
This feels more like Golgo 13 crossed with Spy Hunter for the shooting/sidescrolling sections and story, and Shinobi/Ninja Gaiden for the platforming, gameplay, and enemy/boss variety, honestly.
I have to give it to the NES online service on the switch, if this did not come on there I probably would not have tried this game out and I really do like it.
What about veggie sticks? Would you say celery is a veggie stick? Would you say a carrot is a veggie stick? Or are you thinking a roasted veggie skewer, which sounds pretty good honestly...
Oh, GUN DEC. It's one of the Switch online games I didn't really try. The box art with Bruce Willis isn't actually on there. It's just erased or possibly cropped out.
Ducking and running, that's what's commonly known as a Roadie Run. I always thought that Gears of War was the first game to use that. With other games choosing to make crouched movement a roll.
This makes me want a let's play of Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi III from you! The lesser known (but better for the 2D installments in my opinion) ninja franchise.
I've weirdly never been a fan of the 2D Shinobi games, or at least the original and Revenge. They always felt so stiff by comparison and I was never a fan of the way the double jump worked and the limited ammo. (Mind you, I was a kid when I played these, so that might feel different now) 3 always seemed pretty grand and interesting though. Funny enough though, I used to REALLY like the 3D Shinobi game, though I never gave Nightshade the try it deserved due to how annoying it was to find.
@@ProtonJon Uh, interesting! 3 is definitely the better one, but I think Revenge of Shinobi is well worth playing. I think it would be a cool idea to try that franchise again now that you're older, even if only in your stream. God knows you play lots of games! Either way, awesome video and love the revival of your channel! You were my gateway to RUclips in 2007 or 2008. First channel I subscribed to and I have no regrets!
So, in the Japanese version you’re playing as yourself, and in this version you’re playing as either Mel Gibson, or the dad from Growing Pains. Yeah, all of those sound crazy enough for this game, considering what I remember about the plot. And the enemies in general, as explained at 10:03 And don’t forget the hopping vampires from ancient Chinese mythology that showed up earlier.
The item drops always annoyed me as a kid. Does B stand for Bullets or Bombs? Does G stand for Gun or Grenades? It's easy to tell if you pay attention to what ammo number goes up, but it still bugs me to this day.
"Alright developers, we have our game about a badass vice cop in the future who drives a race car with machine guns. We need a first boss designed and no one is leaving until we nail it."
"How about a dark wizard?"
"Everyone go home early, we did it."
Jon: "It's not exactly a secret that I like Ninja Gaiden."
Me: *Checks channel icon* "...MY GOD!"
I know right? xD
*Checks banner*
Oh gods, the signs were here all along
*takes off sunglasses slowly and dramatically* "...My God!"
@@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat I feel like those should be nerd glasses, because you're a scientist making a discovery.
Nerd sunglasses!
Wow, this really IS a Ninja Gaiden-style game, Jon's first death was even to a bird knocking him off a platform. It's just like old times!
Pretty sure it was a hawk instead of a falcon though

"He's driving a modified cop car and is shooting other cars with twin machine guns. Eyewitnesses say he was eating an entire bone-in-cut that he grabbed off the road. You seen him, Hart?"
My headcanon is that he's such a loose canon cop that he wouldn't surrender his gun and grenades to the TSA.
Kept expecting lucahjin to pop up during that last cutscene
"Buddy I'm trying to stab a robot. Please don't ruin my robot stabbing."
Stuff like this is why I love your runs.
Just so you feel validated Jon, I laughed at the 5 o’clock joke.
That'd be MasterTimeThief you're validating, as he apparently edited this LP
@@ChristianCTaken Damn, didn’t catch that. Thanks for the correction.
It’s pretty good dry wit.
I laughed too.

When you had to fight your way to the airport, I liked imagining it was the scene from Airplane with the pilot fighting off all the religious spokespeople.
"Bagel we talked about this, the doctor said I NEED to stab robots."
When it comes to character writing, "ex-mercenary" is easy tough-guy cred.
Jon makes people drop their meat sticks. Rated R.

This is prime proton Jon content. It’s like I’m back in grade 10 scarfing down stale Tostitos
Okay but real talk: I want that thinking face sprite art so I can put that in a frame and hang it on my wall; that’s art right there!

I love the sassy Jon insertions so much. It's my favourite kind of post commentary.
2 projects in 1 week, what kinda else world am I in?!?
This is one of those cool looking games I saw in Nintendo Power back in the day, tried to imagine how it played but never got to actually play.
Now here's some classic Protonjon content! Gonna enjoy this LP!
I love that Editing Jon gets to be his own rift tracks.
I am so glad you’re back to uploading more regularly. Daddy is back baby!
Considering the chip has "Sammy" written on it, I'm guessing it's part of this game's chipset.

You wouldn't want to see an action movie starring a sitcom dad bumbling his way to badassery to save his family or something?
I'd _love_ that. Especially if he becomes badass but is still endearingly bumbling.
You can only duck and run because duck-and-run is a scientific advancement of unrivaled proportions.

Cyberpunk face/off Ninja Gaiden?!! *prepares himself*
Is there any reason the clock skips a fair bit of time at 15:48? Or is that just a random glitch that’s got no consistency to it?

Veggie Skewer, definitely.
You can tell Jon is a cool guy because he doesn't watch the boss exploding. That's still a current reference, right?

This game seems neat, I’ll have to try it. The graphics remind me of Batman and Power Blade.

Seems like a real missed opportunity that they didn't integrate the NES Zapper into that shooting gallery mode.
I would be very curious to know if you've ever played "Cyber Shadow" It very much feels like a NES Ninja Gaiden inspired game, and it's really good.
"You're a cop, who cares?"

Have you played "Shadow of the Ninja" ("Blue Shadow" in UK) for NES?
No, but I am aware of it and have seen some playthroughs of it.
This is one of my favorite NES games. But I honestly LIKE the story and think it's actually better than Ninja Gaiden's.
So I guess the game will end with a giant boss with a small weakpoint that you just keep stabbing with your "whip"
