First part: Recorded in August/September 2019. This part: Recorded *literally the month of it being uploaded* . Is there even a joke for this? I'm thinking "Prime Proton Jon Energy" but that feels disrespectful to him after being so consistent with putting out new content for the channel recently.
It IS prime Proton Jon energy, in that it's a comical display of time mismanagement, but FUCK if Jon will leave a project incomplete. It might take years for him to close that gap, but he WILL close it.
It *is* Prime Proton Jon Energy, but now he's working *with* it (recording far in advance so the delay between episodes is shorter) instead of against it (long *long* delays), to give us this new consistency. As someone who struggles with time management in the same way, it's far less stressful to frontload the effort like that, rather than having unfinished *and partially shared* things hanging over my head for months/years on end.
I love how Jon has massive hubris and plays down to inferior levels until he goes "I might not win this." And rises to great challenge and comes up clutch. It's clockwork.
Ah, yes, the classic transition from the front of a moving train... to a sewer. Was it a sewer train? Did Hart just jump off and land in a pipe? 4:40 Those long-necked spider bots are just the best thing. If I ever need to design sentry robots for my secret lair, all the ones in worker areas are going to look like that.
The official dialogue after the final boss, specifically, the "In you flows the same blood as mine...." line kind of implies that Hart will eventually turn into a giant monster. Or at least it can be read that way. The fan translation dialogue is more vague and focuses on Hart's destiny.
"Why are we fighting a goddamn bear?" That reminds me of Condemned 2. You're fighting all sorts of weird supernatural shit like tar creatures and ghosts but probably the scariest part of the game is literally a goddamned bear.
Master Time Theif meant to have a message in there. He's done an excellent job of editing so far! There's a comment in the description with what the video meant to have in there.
29:15 = As much as I *hate* love triangles, that seems like a legitimate third (and even fourth) way to interpret Sophia's silence. If you consider that she might be in love with Hart, then the "..." could either be a) her realizing saying in that moment would be a bad time to say it to him with Chris's life in danger or b) her having conflicted feelings about Chris being rescued since if Chris had lived, then Hart continue would choose to be with her (instead). Obviously it would be come off a monstrous thing to admit the latter aloud even if it's what she's truly thinking without any actual malice towards Chris. Shrug. Her silent reaction seems to be intentionally as ambiguous as possible, so it could be one of those four possibilities, a combination of them, or even a fifth possiblity I have yet to consider. Either way, it's good of you to include the fan retranslation, especially since it looks like you had to play the game again to do it, unfair jumps and all. So thanks for that, the video, and the consistency in general as of late.
With how much I pick apart small differences in the US and UK Scripts of Miitopia; Jon picking apart "Mwah hah hah"'s is by far something I understand.
The translation differences on UK and US Pikmin 3 and M&L Dream Team are insane..! I've noticed that more people with the UK translation like Dream Team but the US translation has people say they didn't like the game..!
Oh yeah dude I started noticing this too. For some inexplicable reason my Switch was set to region Australia so I got the UK version, at first I thought it was just some odd Switch changes "Oh I guess they used the latest version and it happened to be the UK version" then I saw some definitive british spellings and phrases and I raised quite an eyebrow It wasn't until I was comparing some scenes side-by-side with a friend playing along that I noticed there's a lot of strange little differences between the two. I think my favorite is the presence that gives you your power is "something of a guardian spirit" in the US version and "kind of a god" in the UK version LOL
I remember playing this game on my Switch at my college lobby back in August/September 2019. Pretty crazy to think that while I was doing so, Jon was recording it for his LP.
The "merman" looks more like the Naga, a snake person. Just like Umbrell--I mean Beda to turn humans into mutants. Time to shoot Moldorm with our spy car!
Love coming back to this game since the very awesome Nintendo Power coverage of it in '91. The most fair of Ninja Gaiden clones but amazing gameplay and varied. To clear up a few things (and due to how the retranslation changed up elements): 1) BEDA Corp was a front by alien beings that produced an energy source called Gel (Green slime, the "Stuff"). Humans taking Gel would experience an incredible high, but any more use would cause horrific mutations. 2) BEDA CEO's name is Damien Hawke, Quin's name is still the same (NP issue and manual state this). 3)While they used a Bruce Willis looking image for Gun-Dec mixed with Bladerunner, the game is heavily inspired from the manga/anime AKIRA. Hart is dressed similarly to Kaneda, the opening car scene is like the motorcycle scene at the beginning of AKIRA, both have cyberpunk themes and sci-fi attached along with constant action 4) Sophia was considered Vice's expert tracker when it came to finding anyone, but I do think she did care about Hart and Christy. 5) I don't think the war buddy Reese was accurate and I stick with him being Quin's partner in Vice that got captured by BEDA and turned into a cyborg weapon to protect the Gel manufacturing facility in Ricardo (where the mad trucker escaped) 6) Kim Ron was a Gel dealer (The Rat Man in the 2nd stage being one of the many Gel mutants Quin fought same with the mutant in the power plant) so it made sense in Hart's investigation 7) The train to the city sewer you can think that was Quin stowing onto from the Ricardo Gel facility to get back to the city (though where in Central America and what state it went to is unclear) 8)Hart's demeanor was meant to be more 80s action hero as it had been described in the Vice unit his unnatural ability to survive the most difficult of assignments by any means (fits all the one-liners he says) and almost inhuman skills. This was a wonderful synopsis and review of this hidden NES gem and I am delighted Nintendo gave this the light of day a couple of years ago for newer audiences.
I gotta say it's good to see you putting out new stuff on your channel, streams are so slow usually and now I don't have much time for them. Also I enjoy how you include odd facts in your LPs, which is less prevalent in your streams. Keep up the good work.
The first part of this lets play gave me motivation to try this game on Switch and got through it last week, was a good time. It's nice part 2 is here to watch, can't wait for whatever you have next. :>
Great LP as usual, Jon! I wouldn't take the retranslation as gospel - I know Ryusui took a LOT of liberties when he did the Breath of Fire 2 retranslation, specifically adding lots of swearing (the Japanese language doesn't have swearing in the same sense English does) and flowery language that doesn't necessarily match up to the original 1-to-1. That over-the-top speech style in the cutscenes sounds exactly the same as what he did with Breath of Fire 2!
That translation made a lot of things make sense. Still one of my favorite games from childhood, I would always go the grenade route for the final boss. Also we know it's a sewer and not a waterworks cause the water is green, haha. I'm curious to see what other Ninja Gaiden likes you have coming.
"this could have been the one, no sewer level" oh cmon EVERY game has a sewer level. Never understood why that was such a freakishly common trope but it was as common as a desert level with a pyramid in the background.
The whole "Clone the CEO of an evil corporation to keep the business running" is something I feel like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos does.
Can you make a playlist for this? I know its 2 videos but as time goes by the playthrough will be lost to time. Its just easier for people to see who are new later on.
I don't know if you're taking suggestions Jon, but Batman on NES could be done similar to how this was done. Game has a prototype with vastly different inbetween level cutscenes. And it's relatively short, if hard as hell.
with how jon complaines abot past jon and future jon and how we know rosajon is a thing is jon just their own letsplay group and the reason it took so long for uploads to resume was because they had a falling out but now they are back together
So if Hart is a clone, then can he turn into a giant skeleton monster too? I'm guessing the swearing in the dialogue is just personal preference on the part of the translators. That sort of thing is hard to convey between languages (or sometimes within the same language) and fan translations tend to go overboard a bit.
I mean I personally have three evil laughs I keep memorized. A stock: "MWAHAHAHAHAHA!" A custom: "VAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" And a fake one for when the heroes think they beat me but it was just my robot clone. "HAHAHAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHA. HAHAHAHAHA."
So you're telling me that past Jon sat down to record 25 minutes of footage... And that's it? Holy shit Jon what was going on that day?! What reason did you have to not finish the damn thing in 1 sitting?!
"Past me left me in the sewers" Proton Jon says... of course he did. Always beware the Past You, that son of a bitch is responsible for everything that's going wrong with you now... always. If only there was a way to hurt him BACK...
They should do a blaster master zero quality remake of this and throw in another part at the end where he hunts down the other clone while dealing with the police who were probably in beda's pocket the whole time.
Shame they had to translate a lot of the dialogue from the original, it fleshed out the story a lot more. At least they both had the same thinking face. That's what ultimately mattered.
I kinda like the episode is in this year though :D I don't know why, but kinda feels less like "ah two years too late to comment on stuff that he did two years ago"? I dunno if that makes sense
While I do think the twist is fun kind, it is pretty nonsensical yeah that "Wait if they just keep cloning CEO to keep company running, how the heck Hart ended up as cop? Please don't tell me the just let clone run free until they decide to go talk to old CEO clone"
So Jon, you said that you were a fan of Sci-Fi. What's your favorite kind of Sci-Fi? Do you like a more Dystopian type? Utopian? Something more grounded in actual science? Something that borders a bit more on Science Fantasy? Personally, I love Sci Fi more like the Megaman games (more so classic), And also ones that border more on Science Fantasy.
Could there have been a Japanese novel planned/that came out but very few know about... Happened to quite a few Japanese games at the time... Even still really... [Edit] I found funny looking dvd on yahoo auctions with a funny comic (not manga) looking thing The original kinda implies the clone you fight once tried fighting it too...
I mean, shouldn't cops be concerned with corporation corruption and assassinations? :D Bit weak joke there Jon "ah all corporations do crime so its okay!"
“Sir he’s reached the H.R. Geiger rooms.”
“Send out the bears...”
“Th-the what sir??”
“DID I STUTTER?!”
(drops down from the ceiling dramatically)

6) Kim Ron was a Gel dealer (The Rat Man in the 2nd stage being one of the many Gel mutants Quin fought same with the mutant in the power plant) so it made sense in Hart's investigation
7) The train to the city sewer you can think that was Quin stowing onto from the Ricardo Gel facility to get back to the city (though where in Central America and what state it went to is unclear)
8)Hart's demeanor was meant to be more 80s action hero as it had been described in the Vice unit his unnatural ability to survive the most difficult of assignments by any means (fits all the one-liners he says) and almost inhuman skills.
