people try to jump right into advanced stuff without learning the fundamentals. like this reddit post i saw recently - poster wants betta sorority, already has 4 bettas, 20g bare tank with no actual plants, single corydora and frog. and it's not cycled. but hey, sororities are real thing so i can do it right? no, u can't
This doesn’t sound anything like the methods that are the focus of this video.
There are videos about things that are too hard for begginers, but weirdly nobody mentions "looking up informations about setting up a fishtank while reading hundreds of sources that all contradict each other". Seriously, this is so anxiety inducing that I don't know how any begginer can get anything done. And looking at an aquarium to reduce anxiety unfortunately doesn't work with an empty tank. Your easy mode series found me at a moment where I was extremely overwhelmed, you're a godsend !
I have heavily planted tanks and seldom have high anything. I do water changes in the smaller tanks once a month or so. The bigger tanks once in a while.
I appreciate this video SO much. There is such a wealth of information online these days and as a beginner in this hobby it is hard to discern what advice is *truly baseline* and what is *advanced tips for optimizing every last thing*.
Great video. I agree that the all natural aquarium is not the way to go for a new fish keeper. Simplicity is the key. Love this series!
Been fish keeping for over 20yrs I think the father fish method as some call it is very easy specially if u listen to his directions just as much can go wrong setting up a reg aquarium for someone as a beginner......just my opinion........love ya John and love ur videos .......I think that's a great video idea pros and cons of each style for a beginner who's starting a tank ....... much love brother ✌🏼
I followed the FF method. My 75 is low maintenance. The plants took off.
I used ff method too. One 6 gallon and 3, 2 gallon nano tanks. I don't do anything to them but top them off. Oh yeah, and take the betta out every once in a while so I can put snails in for deep cleaning. She will eat them, and anything else. So she has to go to a motel room for a couple days while the maids work. 😂

One of my sons had several surgeries decades ago, at a huge University hospital. There were fish tanks in all the main waiting areas. Loved them…so calm and beautiful. And I could tell, work intensive. People of my generation like to know what we are doing BEFORE we try it. People now days dive in head first and often hit bottom…fake it till you make it is a poor method for life, or fish.
Out of curiousity, what is your generation? Based on this channels views and subs, plenty of people are trying to learn before they dive in. Are all of those people of your generation? If so, how can you tell?
I'm Gen z. I research every undertaking for months before I commit. I spent three months studying fish keeping before I finally got my first 10 gallon. In my experience, it's the older people who jump right into things.

When I first got into the hobby I joined every online forum and read every online resource I could....if I had a nickel for every time a boomer or gen x'er had some aquarium issue but refused any advice that didn't fit in with their preconceived ideas of proper fishkeeping I would never have had student debt 😆 Like, you're posting about how all of your fish are dying but apparently you know everything about everything.....🤷♀️

I love you guys. I don't like maintenance much though. I do the ff planted tank with snails for cleaning and just watch the water and how much food i give. It's working really well. I basically just top off now.
Your honey has inspired me to try a betta sorority tank next. Heavily planted, lots of hiding spots, nerites for cleaning. My lfs has beautiful bright koi sisters available for sorority tanks and I'm so excited to try.

Maybe in the near future, you can give a series on a seasoned tank of 1to3 years ,so beginners will have some hope to things to come. The first year is the worst (the dirty years) then it's trial and error, and gets you to that, can't wait to try a new filter, plants, drift wood, etc. What ever will make your fish love you even more.
You're absolutely right. Father Fish method works well and it is easy, but it's only easy for people that know a lot about fishkeeping and been doing this for a good, long while. Experience is king for having tanks like that. I've been fishkeeping for few years now, and I can say that I know considerable abount of related knowledge, and I still don't dare to try my hand at that method. Oh, and my tank with a nice, big school of golden barbs, doesn't want to eat anything apart from flakes meant for saltwater fish. Once, I gave it to them because I run out of food for them, and now they won't eat anything else :)
Don't let your fear stop you. I've kept bettas for years, but not tanks like everyone else has with all the chemicals and that. I knew nothing except test strips and water changes.
In the last 6 months I've made a 6 gallon and 3 nano tanks that are doing great. It's going so well I'm ready to put together a 20 gallon, and then another one. If I can do it, I'm sure someone with your experience would do great. 💪
I've never had so much fun with aquariums, especially the resurrection jars and collecting plants from rivers and lakes.
Do it! Just use another tank, not your established tank. Put a few lake minnows and pond snails in it. Once you are confident, load it up with fish you like. What are you gonna lose? What is there to be scared of?

That's what I tell people, too. So often, people ask the "how much and how often" question when it comes to water changes. I just tell them it's impossible to answer that question because it varies from aquarium to aquarium. What remains a constant is that your water will tell you when and how much based on your test results. You also have to consider how that may change as your stocking changes, especially if you're still adding new fish or if the fish you're keeping are going to grow. For example, if you buy an Oscar at 2", and it grows to be 12", obviously, the frequency and volume will increase with the bioload being created.
After 2 weeks my nitrates are at zero and I have to add more fertilizer to raise it back up. The only time I do “water changes” are when I have to vacuum up leaves and poop and need to add water back to the tank. Once a month or less.

Don't know why people would complain about maintenance. It is quick and easy. It only gets hard of you leave it for someday. Doing it weekly is easy. And a great thing. The satisfaction afterwards of a great lookin aquarium and clearly seeing the fish happier according to their behavior. My fish always looks so happy after maintenance. I love the hobby.
This channel has been a lifesaver for my fishtank. The more i do it the more addictive it is and its fascinating. Lol. It's truly very therapeutic to try to get my tank off the ground. Been moving my plants around, adding fish, snails, etc. its so much fun. The algae not so much dealing with brown algae right now but im going to stay with it and see how long it takes to get to the water clear and tank balanced.
We have a new 125 gallon aquarium. We would like a small variety of fish, but all our research has just left us confused on which fish to put into a community and what actual size fish to get.
Tanks are peaceful and relaxing until it's the middle of the night and it starts leaking pump goes out heater goes out. Then it becomes stressful and you hope you have a backup plan. How many new people have a backup plan? Might want to consider that. I'm not trying to talk people out of this but I've experienced all of those issues.

I'm sorry to name name, but since you named someone I'll go ahead, I do not like the father fish method. For me the aquarium/tanks will look too dirty. I love the aquascape way of doing things. Seeing my fish very happy and healthy and enjoying their environment.
I feed and do Weekly Maintenance I love everything about the whole hobby, Maintenance is great for me.
I feed my fish different kinds of food as well as frozen food to keep them healthy and happy.
Your channel helped me a lot making the best decisions for fish. Right fish in certain size tanks. Right fish together with other fish. The right equipment, etc... thanks. 😊
I also love just looking at my fish and aquium with plants as much as possible. I do have a few all over the house. "MTS"...😂😊
FF method here. My tank is pristine. No water issues and plants have to be trimmed back weekly.

I did some major plant clearing in my 5 gal yesterday. Found out I lost a fish and have tons of cull shrimp. I set up a walstad bowl but need a way to heat it. It's a 3 gal bowl. Also bought some fishless fuel from yall gonna use that and turbo start to cycle some guppy tanks.
I'm looking forward to the new snail room and hearing about how Lisa looks after them. I'll have to go back and see if I missed it but don't think so. The Snail barn room is pretty new, I know. It inspired me to get snails of my own, knowing Lisa did a Snail Room 🙂

Great episode and I wish I could have seen this YEARS ago! Too many people make it so complicated it makes you wonder how breathing is possible around them. And the way you shared it is fantastic! People like easy but fish are a commitment in the sense that practice practice practice is how to flourish and have fish that thrive. Or else again feeding, you have had fish that would eat practically the garbage can you they want to eat so much. The other ones I have to be very picky about ingredients or just how they are made available, but once the rhythm is found it’s about stepping to the beat. I have an expression I like to use, don’t be afraid to do enough, whether it be lifting, draining, watching feeding, tank size, filter, etc! In my experience it’s the fear of the dollar or hurt back that makes the difference and lately I do everything with pumps and hoses so really my fear was always not being able to continue. If not for me absolutely for my fish. Otherwise enough is not known until there is experience and experience again in improving the method. Failure is another experience needed but DO NOT JUMP INTO IT, I mean why? It makes you look; makes you question, makes you want to reach out and check and check and CHECK because after too much indecision or negative thinking suddenly the tank with fish at the surface is too much. When all that was needed was to take a breathe and act not in panic because that’s a great way to throw water everywhere, and again make panic decisions leading to more regret. Bottom line if your fish are happy and you are happy seeing it, what’s the problem? The effort is yours to give and for them to benefit. We all want to be a better person or version of what we want to be, but without that practice that person is not possible. Loved this episode and stay happy and healthy my friends!!! 😊❤
I used the test kit to find my pattern. I am routine based. Weekly water changes and bi weekly filter cleaning. Having Shark pros make that easy.

I go on a routine: weekly 15% water change, monthly filter cleaning (washing the material in a bucket filled with old aquarium water). I think it's better eschewing risks as much as possible, that's a very safe mode and the aquarium works fine.
Clean ur filter 1 time every 4 -7 month.

New keepers, take note John is right. I have three very different tanks, a 20 gallon hex, a 40 gallon tall, and a UNS 120U is my flagship. All have planted substrates and fish vary across tanks. My 120U is very high tech with CO2 and an aquarium controller. IT JUST TAKES TIME, so enjoy the process because that’s where the fun is in it. Also, buy from Lisa and John, I have been buying my food from them. Northfin is a great product. ✌🏼
I have to do a water change every week due to nitrates being 25-30ppm out of the tap. No big deal. Been doing that for 7 years😊
how does it help to bring nitrates down if ur tap has nitrates? 🤔

Are you using ro for your water changes? That's the only way this comment would make sense to me, so I'm assuming that's what you mean?
I use half well water and half ro. After all the mineral rich water is in and stable, I use ro to top off, so I don't keep making the water harder each time.
@@jennikohl5189 from the uk, so no well water, just city water supply. Heavily planted tank. 30ppm out of the tap. After a week, tank reading would be about 50ppm, so I’ve always done a 30-40% water change every week
Get plants and a lot of it.. That is what helps with maintenance. I still believe after not being for a very long time in the hobby. That real plants is the secret to healty fish and great water conditions.
I have a few tanks die to MTS and still do not see what the isue is with maintenance. Fish is healthy. Having most of my fish for more than 5 years now since I started. Water is os clear you cant even see there is water in the aquarium.
Weekly Maintenance and plants is the answer. If you do it weekly.bthere is not much to do and ot goes quickly. It is of you leave things till next weekend or nthe next....when things go bad.

I like this series of videos. My best friend's kids want an aquarium for Christmas, and they want me to set it up for them. I'm trying to relearn easy and simple, because their mom will be the one doing maintenance. I just have to convince their mom that 20 gallons will be a bit easier to maintain than 5 gallons. For people who don't know about keeping fish, it always seems like smaller should be easier.

So a question I have asked on face book is. When dealing with larger volume aquariums. When doing a water change how do you go about the temp of the replacement water? I.e filling from the hose is way easier than buckets, but does the water temp matter when re-filling?

The natural aquarium method is why I am getting into this hobby. If I am not doing that method than I am not doing an aquarium.
I like my animals to get various foods but for ease, I mix it all together. I mix multiple repashy diets with some extra stuff like crushed bee pollen which all work for the animals in my tank. They love the food. I also have a variety of botanicals and things like zooplankton that stay in my tank always so they also get a variety there. I have small fish and shrimp so I keep it in powder form and for the shrimp, I sprinkle it around so that they are forced to explore and forage.
Purigen is great. For our HOBs we have filter on intake, then purigen bag and floss from an old pillow. Thats it.. Purigen is recycled every 3 months. Floss is replaced when the filter slows or its gross. Every 2 weeks.
Best sponges are the magic erasers. NON SCENTED.. original.
Magnetic glass cleaners are handy AF.
I have gotten back into Fish keeping within the last year and it’s been 45 years since I’ve done it. So now I’ve gotten into planted aquariums and I want to make a moss wall. I have seen a RUclips video of someone planting one, but they didn’t say if there was a place that you can get your plastic screens from or can you use plastic canvas from the craft store like Hobby lobby? It had two plastic sheets one they they put them moss in and one they put over it zip tie them together and I’m not really sure how they attached it to the aquarium wall. I’m assuming suction cups. I would like to have your take on this. Do you have a video of making a moss wall?

If you have an aquarium and you're too busy to maintain it, why do you have an aquarium anyway? Currently I have five tanks, it takes me a lil over an hour one day a week to do weekly maintenance on all of them and I enjoy every minute of it.

We are moving to where the water is ph 7.5 and KH of 1. Where we live now the PH is 8.2 kh is 8. I have raised the KH to 6 with baking soda. Still makes me nervous. I have 6 fantail goldfish, 2 -50g tanks. I will slow acclimate though. Still nervous.

Quick question for anyone. I am rescuing some fish that no one has cared for (in basically ever they eat algae and mosquito larve) I got super into it and started a planted tank. Everything is cycled and I’m getting ready to get the fish. But now I’m worried I did too much! (Although now that I think about it… the small amount of dirt that escapes the sand cap is nothing compared to what those guys are living in…) should I give it a try? (I had a beta/shrimp and snails a few years ago ago and he lived for 5 years so I know the basics)

My betta is super picky with food. He will only eat fluval bug bites and frozen blood worms. I have tried two other pellets and he just spits them out.

I was wondering if you can help me out with what’s a good step unfortunately around February of this year my mother in law decided to get my son a 5 gallon tank with 3 fish 2 gold fish and 1 black moor and because of that I did research and realized that tank was much but not long after we had a hurricane and unfortunately lost the 2 goldfish so we had the Black Moor AkA Gru and to my suprise I came home from work only to find a Koi goldfish hanging out with Gru which is now named Lucy during this time work was slow and wasn’t making much money things have gotten better and have now since moved them into a 10 Gallon what can I do to ensure they are good until I can get them a bigger tank

Never test water, small water changes once a month all has been good going on 4 years.
I would like to gently caution all fish parents, on fish food and pellets that promise very fast growth, because hormones are added so that the fish grows faster, and many times so fast that their body cannot catch up or that their genes simply do not support growing that big, and therefore the fish develops TUMOURS instead....
My fish were all fine and healthy until I added these pellets to their diet and one died, with tumours on him inside out. After I threw the culprit away, indeed the rest of my fish are saved. I am very sure we don't mind our fish staying small after all, right?! At least they stay healthy and not die.
The ironic truth is that fish grows anyway with sufficient food, so why feed hormones to force it.
So be very careful of those food and pellets that promise very fast growth.
father fish type aquariums are easier to maintain and go wrong less than over filtered sterile enviornments like what most youtubers preach about, its actually the sterile nature of boxes full of water that kills fish
What do you mean by "sterile"? Any good aquarium keeper knows the importance of beneficial bacteria, cycling, etc.
MJ Aquascaping recently did a video on a filterless tank. It didn't work out for him but he didn't do it right. He used aquasoil and didn't cap it with sand for one thing.

What kind of fish do you have and what size tank? How old is the tank? How old are the fish? Normally a quality pellet is more than enough nutrition for my fish.
@@AFARRINGTONUSN i have a 2 mollies that are my oldest fish in their ive had them for about 6 months and the tank is a 10 gallon they just not seem to be growing the lfs batch of mollies are way bigger than mine
