I think Johnny only ever came to the UK once in 1970 at the Bath Festival. I was there and he made a long and lasting impression on me. Absolutely brilliant. I have more CD's of johnny than anyone else except for the Stones. 53 years ago , and i remember his gig like it was yesterday, RIP my friend , You were one of a kind.
If you ever want to visit Johnny's grave and pay your respects, he is buried in the old Union Cemetary in Easton, Connecticut. I visited it several times over the past 7 years. Always nice to see all the harmonicas, notes, letters and various paraphernalia that his fans leave on his tombstone.
I like how the greats can more or less play rhythm and lead at the same time but then Johnny takes it up another level...slide, lead and rhythm while singing.
The mad albino himself! One of the greatest guitarist of all time right here. Saw Johnny Winter blow the doors out of Bogart's Nightclub in Cincinnati, Ohio back in 1990. And nobody could touch him playing slide. And for the record, I'm pretty certain the CPH, 1971 stands for Copenhagen, 1971, which was where this was recorded.
Johnny is legendary ... Bad Arse Blues Guitar Slinger who was on the ground floor with BB King, Muddy Waters , Rick Derringer and many more. He influenced generations of blues / rock guitarists and song writers.
I saw James Cottton in 1972 in Ottawa - every Saturday Carleton U had a blues nite - artists included James Cotton, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker - who Bonnie Raitt did a CD with her and John were great
Johnny, in the documentary 'Down & Dirty', said "I've been through a lot of sh/t".. Including 50 years of drugs and alcohol.. Rough, raw Texas roadhouse blues rock. The real deal 🥰
Johnny and Edgar are both albino. Not sure if u were aware. That's why their hair is snow white and their eyes are pink. That's why u rarely saw them in daylight. I've loved those two since I discovered them when I was in 7th grade in 1968. I'm 67 now and still jam their tunes . Thanks for showing johnny.
I'm not positive, but I think CPH was located in Denmark. Also a 6'4" albino shredding authentic Delta Blues would stun any Euro in 1971. The Winter Brothers were very encouraged by their family to play music. They were obvious savants. They were a duo as elementary aged children and had some regional hits. As they grew to teenagers their tastes differed and each went their own way, Johnny focusing on pure blues and Edgar focusing on traditional soul music. They made a record together in 1976 called Together Again with some stunning vocal harmonies and the album came with what was the Winter family photo album. A wonderful piece of art if you can find an original copy.
Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter, and Rory Gallagher were the three best Rock/Blues guitarists ever. A ton of respect to Stevie Ray Vaghn as well, but everything he did, Hendrix did 30 yrs earlier, and he was the first to do it. Hendrix was SRV's idol, and you can tell by all of the Hendrix songs he plays. Johnny Winter is just a hair below Jimi. They played one time together by accident in a small New York Bar. What a shock to happen to be in that Bar by chance, when Jimi Hendrix, and Johnny Winter were Jamming. No video or cell phones back in the late 60s to capture the event, but someone had a cheap tape recorder, and managed to get about 15 minutes of this Historic jam session. Thanks
Stevie idolized Jimi so much that he spent weeks in the studio remastering the whole Hendrix library. Then gave all the money from sales to the Hendrix family.
It is a 12 string guitar, but he's playing it with 6 strings on it. On a 12 arting, the lowest four (in pitch) strings, E A D G, Are normal guitar strings paired with a thinner string tuned an octave higher. The highest (in pitch) 2 strings, B and E are both the same as their counterparts. By his sound, you can tell he's only using the regular six. A good example of a 12 string sound would be the intro on Pink Floyd's " Wish You Were Here".
If you guysa like this version of this song, you should check out the live version form "Johnny Winter And Live".. It's the hottest version of this song that he ever did. It has Rick Derringer on the other guitar. Really good....in fact, you should check out the whole cd. There's not a bad song on it. The same thing with "Johnny Winter Captured Live." In my opinion , the best two cds he did on his own. He was also good on "Edgar Winter's White Trash cd .....I think it was called Tobacco Road and is live. Enjoy guys!
Johnny & Edgar Winter ----- Man-O-Live! That's some extremely high level SCHLINITZ BAYBEH. I'll never 4get them. Wish they played like that nowadays, but nah!!! Some real slim schlinitz today. Thanks. It reminds me of when I was a kid.
You are correct in your understanding of the 12-string. You can get some interesting sounds by tuning the doubled strings to the corresponding V to the original 6 strings. Johnny Winter was the legendary Super Saiyan of Texas blues
12 string guitar, first normal 6 strings are standard tuned and then the second set of 6 strings are a thinner gauge from the first set. the low 4 strings are tuned an octave or 8 steps apart from the first set except for the high B and E are the same gauge and same octave. Edgar Winter Biography, Songs, & Albums | AllMusic
He.and his brother Edgar are albinos and spent a lot of time indoors just playing music and both are accomplished musicians! Johnny plays all guitars and Edgar plays keyboards and saxophone.great reaction guys .
If you dig that and really wanna see what Johnny Winter can do, check out his version of "When you got a good Friend" live at Capitol Theatre 1984. It'll blow your mind! Edit: CPH stands for Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Btw this gig is from 1970, not 71.
Hey Wolf Hunterz! 🤙 Johnny Winter! Dig it! If you get a chance check out his song Illustrated Man! He wrote one about all his ink, and it jams! Keep it Rockin Hunterz! 🤘
If you want to hear some great Johnny Winter, go to captured live album listen to rock 'n' roll people , Bonnie Marroni, roll with me. Excellent Johnny Winter.
My recollection is put only 6 strings on a 12 string neck; something about the way he picked those 6, the other 6 would get in the way of his slide guitar "style." Not sure about the "doubling up."
There's a fairly recent DVD on Johnny, called "Down and Dirty" but I don't remember it covering much of his upbringing. It's also streaming from time to time. I think I watched it on Amazon Prime. Also, my favorite version of this song Mean Town Blues is Johnny in his band called Johnny Winter And with Rick Derringer also on guitar. The band was actually member of the McCoys, who along with Rick Derringer had the hit Hang on Sloopy. Rick played and worked with both Johnny and Edgar.
Johnny Winter And was a 3 piece band. That live album was my introduction to JW, A New GF, played it while we were shooting pool in her basement. Then we went to see him open for Three Dog Night, with The Faces in between. Fall 1970. Got the tickets late so they were behind the stage, just third row up, looking down on the band's, TDN had two drummers, and we could see everything they did. Pretty much, the best concert I ever saw. Never saw TDN again, but saw the other two every time they came to Detroit, for 6 years! Same with Edgar Winter, Foghat, Humble Pie, and J. Geils Band.
@@VinE83656 There wasn't a bass player, when I saw them, just 2 guitars and drums, unless Derringer was playing bass. And Bobby Caldwell doesn't ring any bells with me. Was Tommy Shannon a drummer?
@@ramblerdave1339 I think usually Johnny Winter had a trio. However, I believe the AND was because it was Johnny Winter and the McCoys. I double checked a live cd and it has those names. Also, the studio album has four guys on the cover if I remember correctly. It could be four on the studio album and three when they toured. Either way it’s a killer album, both studio and live.
A traditional 12 string is basically like a 6 string, it just has 6 "pairs" of strings that are played together, not 12 individual strings. The second string of each pair is tuned in a higher octave to give the guitar a fuller sound. Actually the top two sets of strings are tuned together, but the bottom four are tuned in octaves.
Are you beginning to understand why we boomers are so critical of today's music? He was known as trhe fastest left hand in the business back. Saw him live a few times.
A 12 string has 2 of each E A D G B E Only one is tuned an octave higher giving a sympathetic sound to the original string. Usually used in strumming… not picking. Clearly.. the sound… Johnny has the sympathetic strings missing. Today’s 7 and 8 string have one or 2 lower strings… Say D E A D G B E
No Jon...this time i desagree i like all season during their standard period ahah . That's for sure . Sounding good with this rythm is way less simple that it can seems
Your going to have a hard time finding a better rhythm section. Turner and Shannon are hard to beat… like a clock. SRV used tommy Shannon for recording. Fabulous. Winter is playing a Fender 12… with half the strings removed.

Just pointing out in case anybody wasn't aware, that's a very young Tommy Shannon on bass who was part of Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble.
I wasn't sure thanks for the info
"Slut" Shannon, lol
Tommy Shannon was behind getting both Johnny and SRV off heroin. A solid good guy and a great bassist.
This man was one of the best to ever pick up a guitar. 100% serious

There was a legendary jamsession where Jimi Hendrix played bass because Mr. Winter was on the guitar....
It’s a Fender 12, strung as a 6
I like how the greats can more or less play rhythm and lead at the same time but then Johnny takes it up another level...slide, lead and rhythm while singing.
It’s a 12 string guitar set up with 6 strings like a regular guitar, it was the only guitar he could afford at the time.
Johnny's growl is legendary.

I tend to disagree. Hendrix was the innovator and Stevie Ray Vaughan perfected it. A lot more rhythm in SRV's guitar playing.
Stevie idolized Jimi so much that he spent weeks in the studio remastering the whole Hendrix library. Then gave all the money from sales to the Hendrix family.

My grandfather played a 16 string. He would back me up when i had to practice my clarinet for band
