The Winter brothers are undoubtedly master multi-instrumentalists. They've each had outstanding moments in rock history.
He and his brother Edgar are, to us old-timers, ROCK LEGENDS !!!!!!!!!!!
The very definition of legends!
I was a buddy of Johnny’s for the last dozen years of his life. I produced shows for him numerous times in Canada. I’ve also got to play both his famous Firebirds! A guitar highlight for me, for certain!
I did the same for his bro, Edgar, as well. I love those brothers out’a East Texas!
✌️👍
Beaumont, just up the gulf coast from Port Arthur, home of Janis Joplin.
Wow, lucky you, surrounded by the musical energy of the talented Winter brothers.
I saw Edgar Winter (loved him!) in 1974 at the Providence Center, I was 13yrs old. I took the bus to the city to buy tickets - first in line, row A, on the floor. My first concert. 🎶🦋
You never heard of him?? Holy cow.
Now.. listen to his brother and him doing Tobacco Road live. You will be blown away!
Oh, his hair? he's albino.
Johnny and Edgar Winter tobacco road and it has to be the live version.
@@derrickgoodwin6192 Damn Right!! Live is the best for these guys !!
I can't say anything different and mean it. Watch Tobacco Road! Oh, as you watch the live Tobacco Road, you will see Tommy Shannon on bass. He was Stevie Ray Vaughan's bassist in Double Trouble.
Johnny and his brother Edgar had the most extreme form of Albinism. As youths, if they got out at all in the daylight they would burn very fast. Like 2nd degree burns. So they spent a lot of their childhood in the basement of the house. Their parent bought them like every musical instrument you could think of, and both boys mastered all of them. They were two phenomenal musicians!
Johnny went more Blues Guitar and Edgar went more Keys and Synth, but they could both play almost anything.
That's why they "Only Go Out at Night".
Johnny and Edgar, both extremely talented. Both showmen.
Check out Frankenstein by the brothers Winter😊
'Frankenstein' was performed by the Edgar Winter Group (1973). Bro Johnny wasn't in that band. The band's other big hit was 'Free Ride'. Sebs should react to both songs!
Johnny & Edgar did release one album: 'Together: Edgar Winter and Johnny Winter Live' (1976).
At one time he was the highest paid musician in the world! He and his brother were incredibly talented Texans!❤❤❤
Factuality correct or just a statement by yourself?
@@garethhawkins4710 true
@@garethhawkins4710 At the time, for an unsigned act, he got a huge contract. IIRC, a journalist saw him live, wrote a review, and the led to Johnny getting signed for the big contract.
I saw him live a couple times, both as the main act and opening for George Thorogood. (George in One Bourbon One Scotch "were at the bar. Listening to Johnny Winter on the jukebox.")
@@garethhawkins4710 was paid 600.000 $ in 1969 by Columbia to join their label and here'a a fun fact about his debut album
Bill Josey, who owned Sonobeat Records, had recorded a live show at the Vulcan Gas Company in Austin so Johnny would have a demo to shop for a major label. However, Josey released that performance as Progressive Blues Experiment on his own label. But before the ink had dried on Johnny’s Columbia contract, Josey sold the LP to United Artists. This album is still one of Johnny’s best-selling and most highly acclaimed releases, but the artist never saw a penny. 'Bill Josey had the tapes and he got the money,' Johnny says. 'Even now when they sell that CD, I don’t get any money.'”
Johnny Winter is an ALBINO
You may not know, he is a person who has albinism. I have a friend whose son has this condition and would not consider it as an identity, athough it is a significant disabiity.

As was his younger brother Egar. Being the oldest, Johnny made it first and stayed true to the blues.
They became so good because they couldn't go outside in the Texas sun.
Also, the brothers were both legally blind.
Highway 61 , slide guitar tour de force !
Tobacco Road...
Yes, especially live at the CA Jam in 1975. An absolute shred fest
I listened to him live in a small venue with only 100 people a few months before he died. After decades as a fan it was truly an amazing experience.
Sebs, firstly than your sub for this. I was at that concert and I have seen him over 20 times in my life and he always put on a fantastic show. His true love was the Blues which he did later in his career. No one like him, you should listen to "3rd Degree" or "Sweet Poppa John" among many others . It's a crime that more reactors don't react to his music be it the Blues or his Rock stuff.
My husband just can not believe you have not heard Johnny Winter!! He loves Johnny!!
Johnny is as good as it gets. One of the all time best imo
He was an awesome blues man. I saw him with ZZ Top in 1975 in Orlando and then again in 1993 in Jacksonville Fl, I could listen to him everyday. His Johnny Winter And Live album is amazing. His brother Edgar (Frankenstein) is also an excellent guitar player in his own right.
Man, would I have lived to be at that concert with him and ZZ Top together. 😎🤠
JWA Live is in my top 3 live albums. Johnny and Rick blasting back and forth..awesome
Johnny is the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen some of the best guitar players in the world live. Twice I saw him in very small venues and it’s impossible to take your eyes off his hands.
The album "Johnny Winter And..." is one of the great "lost" rock albums. He was backed up by the McCoys, featuring Rick Derringer, a fantastic one-two punch on guitar. Worth checking out.
I listened to that album all the way through high school. Wore out the vinyl.
Several years ago I shared a crosscountry flight with his brother Edgar. We had great conversations about varied topics. I didn’t recognize him at first. Later he invited me to join him and I became his guest at the Heart concert in Topeka for which he was opening. A very good man.
Had the privilege of seeing Johnny and his brother Edgar together at Rich Stadium back in the 70’s. Incredible!!!
You MUST SEE them together doing the LIVE VERSION of
TOBACCO ROAD!!!
It IS worth it!!!
RIP, Johnny🙏
THANK YOU for decades of GREAT MUSIC!!!
I mention Edgar's 1972 live album "Roadwork" above. The original two LP set had "Tobacco Road" taking up all of one side of one LP. I have it on CD and it is a favorite!
I had a Blacklight poster in my bedroom back in 1969 of Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix. They were sort of Rock/Blues Guitar Super Heros. No doubt, Johnny and Brother Edgar are top shelf artists of any era.
Let's not forget the drummer and the bass player they are killing it too
Skipped my JR/SR prom in either 71 or 72 (can't remember if I was a junior or senior in HS) Anyway it was Johnny Winter AND featuring Rick Derringer as well as Johnny. Atlanta Municipal Auditorium. Awesome. BTW he is Albino...as his other famous well known brother Edgar. I didn't know he's not in the rock hall of fame....gross oversight!!!!!!!. Check out his work with his brother Edgar...Frankenstein...Tobacco Road. I have an early album by him "about Blues".......Leland Mississippi Blues...Be kind to a Fool.
I was at that concert! Now I am 72 and that still fires up my pulse.
His brother Edgar Winter is also afflicted with albinism, he is also a great musician. His better known tracks are Frankenstein and Free Ride. Sadly Johnny passed 10 years ago. He was friends with greats Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy and one of Johnny'saat performances was with them at a classic blues jam that you can find on RUclips. Incredible player. RIP
Saw him 1974 live concert. He ended the night with Bob Dylans song Highway 61 and brought the house down. People were going crazy. A night I'll always remember. Rock and roll at its finest. 😊
I saw him in concert! I also saw his brother Edgar Winter in concert around the same time. He is fantastic! A legend!!
In my mind, he actually WAS Johnny B Good!
My town is right in the middle of the Handy Festival, our local festival celebrating the Father of the Blues, W.C. Handy. His birthplace is just a few blocks from my house. This entire week, different blues bands will be playing in restaurants, parks, and libraries all over town. We have parades and block parties and all kinds of events celebrating the blues.
I had the privilege of seeing Johnny live at Summerfest Milwaukee at the Old Style stage around 1981...he was amazing!
In 1988, Johnny became the first non-African American inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame.
There were so many greatest guitarist in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s.
Shout out to the women guitarists, sisters Megan and Rebecca Lovell (Slide Queen and Reb'L) of Larkin Poe, and the Villareal Sisters, Dany, Pau, and Ale, of The Warning (from Mexico!), along With, Samantha Fish, Sadie Johnson, Ally Venable (another Texan), and Dea Matrona (Ireland) with Mollie McGinn, and Orlaith, (don't know surname, but is pronounced Orla) who switch guitar and bass, back and forth, during their performances. Two years ago, busking on the streets of Dublin, Now opening for Cheryl Crow's European tour. Bringing Guitar Rock back from the abyss, into the 21st century.
I saw Johnny several times at the Bottom Line in NYC (It was a small club in the middle of Greenwich Village). As for Muddy Waters, he is one of the most famous OLD TIME blues players Look up "MUDDY WATERS - Mannish Boy (w Johnny Winter)" on RUclips..
Saw both brothers in the Detroit area in 1973 when I was19. Absolutely amazing!
He was incredible. I got to see him perform live several times, including with Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, at the first Chicago Blues Fest in the early 80's, and shortly before he died. He produced those 70's albums for Muddy Waters - Hard Again (aptly named), I'm Ready, and King Bee, plus Muddy Mississippi Waters Live, that helped recharge his career earning several Grammy awards. He was a blues/guitar master, and the older brother of Edgar Winter. One of the all time greats!
Johnny Winter is in my top 5 of guitar gods ! Got to see him 3 times , the last time was 2 weeks before he passed away ! He still jammed up a good show ! Another good one is Johnny Winter , live at Rockpalest doing The Medley !
🎉 I was a college student in 1974 and bought an album called, “John Dawson Winter III.” It blew me away‼️
Personal favorite
I love Johnny Winter, he is one of the best guitarists! He is one of the best blues singers and guitarists ever! He is an albino, that's why his hair is so white. He is in the blues hall of fame and he should be in the rock n roll hall of fame.
I saw Johnny in 1969 at the Texas International Pop Festival. Play 1979 I saw him at a club called Old Man Rivers. It was about 20 miles south of New Orleans back in the bayou in the woods and the Evergreens.. so I saw him way back in the woods among the Evergreens. And when he performs Johnny B Goode that night the whole audience was screaming Go Johnny Go!!
Such fantastic memories! Was blessed to grow up in Cocoa beach Florida area during the great musical era of the 60, 70, 80’s era.
I have seen Johnny a few times in concert. He was amazing. A great American blues man.
His brother, Edgar (an Albino also) is freaking awesome too....saw both play a concert together in the Scope, Norfolk Virginia. Johnny made a surprise visit, had just been released from prision on Herion charges and not only surprised us, his brother too...he had no clue....it was a super concert...Edgar Winter's White Trash band was great, the Group did....remember, They Only Come Out at Night...... Frankenstein folks!!!!! Johnny was amazing!
My favorite guitar slinger. I saw Johnny in 1975....1990.....2013. Thanks for the memory. PS: Johnny appeared at WOODSTOCK.
Back in the 60s and 70s, Johnny was THE guitar guy. He was right at the top with Hendrix and maybe one or two others. He was also considered tops in blues guitar with the three Kings, too. Stevie Ray claimed he was a major influence on him as well. I can't believe that he's not in the HOF.
Because RRHOF is a joke! They would rather put Madonna or Aretha Franklin, in before they actually respect what's in the name "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame. So many have yet to be inducted, such as the Winter brothers and my friends, Scorpions. RRHOF is a total joke.
Johnny Winters version of Jumpin Jack Flash....👍
Johnny is the King
Johnny and his brother Edgar have albinism so they couldn't spend a lot of time outside in the sun. Their parents nurtured their love of music Check out their version of "Tobacco Road" and "Jumpin Jack Flash". Also check out "Frankenstein", it's an instrumental. All these songs are amazing!!
I saw most of the great guitar players, in my younger years.
But about 35 years ago I saw Johnny Winter live in the Netherlands.
I couldn't believe my ears, and my eyes. He was playing about 10 feet away from me.
Never saw anybody do what he did.
I really think Johnny was the best. Playing slide and finger style in the same song.
Good reaction, thanks.
👍💪😁
B.B.King , Indianola,Mississippi Seed ,The entire Album, produced by leon Russell ,Feat., Joe Walsh,Carol King. Hey ,What's not to like. Keep up the good work.
Saw him in Toronto in '79 I think...his bass player didn't show up...Johnny sat down & played blues for 2 hours...it was fantastic
Mean Town Blues , he played this song at the original Woodstock . His video of Mean Town Blues, awsome!!
Always been my favorite, saw him around 15 times once with Muddy Waters, great reaction
Saw him with Muddy Waters and James Cotton. Probably the same tour.
@@ralpholson7616 yes, later 70s, with Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin, great lineup
Johnny Winter live 1970 Copenhagen...great set, also his performance at the Woodstock Festival, 1969, which I was lucky enough to be there for.
I m so glad i saw him live in a small venu in Montreal !
Saw Johnny twice at Pirates World back in the early 70's along with Steve Miller. Great show!

Went to school with Johnny in 1961 in Hollywood Florida, couldn't play outside had to watch cartoons in the dark, speaking of a remake listen to "let it bleed" he and Rick derringer did a fabulous job
One of a kind!
Seen Johnny 2 times and it was rowdy!! Beer flying rowdy!
And Johnny is one hell of a singer!!
First saw Johnny Winter at the Roundhouse in 1970 six foot six albino with kickass guitar skills he blew me away.
I think you'd also enjoy hearing Johnny's brother, Edgar (The Edgar Winter Group) doing Frankenstein, if you haven't heard it already. It's very unique and awesome. They're a talented family.
My favorite collaboration of the brothers is Tobacco Road. Simply mind blowing!
Johnny is one of the best guitarist ever in New York City. He had Jimmy Hendrix play in base foreign but listen you need to get that CD progressive blues experiment. Every single song is absolutely great and I seen Johnny a few times live one time sitting 5 feet from him in a small bar.
Had to join to shout: "Roadwork" album by Edgar Winter's White Trash--1972 is an excellent LIVE album with Rick Derringer and special guest Johnny Winter coming in for a song. The brothers are Albino with Soul! You probably won't find videos BUT the Album is well worth seeking out. My brother had it on LP back in the 1970's and I have it now on CD.
I stopped in my tracks at a Clearwater free event when it hit me I was walking towards Johnny walking to the stage
He was really known for playing a firebird but he played others I saw him 7 times always brought it to a live performance.
One of rocks best albums "Johnny Winter and" all tore down is great
Johnny was-is great?, the best guitar player of all time? Not sure, the best Albino guitar player for sure! Gotta hear Johnny play the blues!
When Johnny had been big enough, long enough, that he didn't need to care about the labels, he finally put out the blues album he had always wanted too. It was amazing!
Great video Sebs!!! I think you would also like "Tobacco Road" which has both Johnny and his brother Edgar bringing the house down! And don't miss "Frankenstein" by the Johnny Winter Group - its absolutely mind bending!
“Frankenstein” was by The Edgar Winter Group.
one of the best blues/rock guitatists EVER
He was the best! I saw Johnny 6 times from the 70's to where he sat and played at the end(and still was great!) If you want to experience him live. listen to Captured Live
Great suggestion!!!!!!
Johnny and his bro Edgar were albino and grew up in hot Texas. They didn’t go outside, instead they learned to play music .. very well. Frankenstein by Edgar is instrumental classsic.

His hair is "blonde" because both he and his brother Edgar are albinos. 55 years ago, I used to listen to the 3 sided double album (yes it was a double album with only 3 sides. They didn't have any more to record and they didn't want to lose volume by squeezing it on one lb) where Winter plays the studio version of Johnny B Goode. I used to be into photography and I would spend hours in the darkroom as a teenager with Johnny Winter on full blast on my portable record player.
I believe that album is "Johnny Winter And".
@@mikefannon6994 no, it was called Second Winter
@@learnsteelguitarinretirement you are correct, sir. I have a few HW lps, but not that one. Thanks!
The studio version is killer too! From his second album on Columbia Records of course called, Second Winter.
I saw Johnny in concert in Germany back in the 80s while stationed there for the army. It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Johnny Winters, Mean Town Blues, 1971 Copenhagen is some of the best slide guitar you will ever heard!!!
One of my favorite concerts was Johnny and Edgar Winter with BB King in Houston.
Now you need to hear his brother Edgar Winter and his band's musical piece called Frankenstein. Both Johnny and Edgar are albino and both have been playing since before school age. Edgar is proficient on keyboard, drums, sax and vocals.
See John Paris throw the pick at the end? I have one from seeing Johnny at a club in New York. Heard Johnny do this song that night. Johnny has some fast fingers.
seeing johnny and edgar together with Rick Derringer on stage together in the late 70's was unforgettable.
The ultimate texas blues man. Amazing. Boot Hill, Third Degree and many more.
Him and his brother Edgar were my first concert. 1976.
As a guitarist I don't understand how any guitar player that doesn't know who Jeff Beck, Johnny Winters, Alvin Lee Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher or Roy Buchanan are ..... these are true guitar players ‼️👍
I know what you mean. Anytime I watch any of these reaction videos on youtube I think, why would I care about the reactions of someone who has never heard The Beatles (as an example). In this case, someone whose entire knowledge of Chuck Berry is Back to the Future? And the fact that you could watch Back to the Future and not get the joke?
I could add more but yeah.
Him and his brother were are musical genius that only rarely come along.!
Son if you want to play guitar you need to go to blues school maybe some jass start early stuff 30s 40s 50s 60s so much stuff the roots of sooo much .
And, he's never heard of Muddy Waters? Really?
My personal favorite guitarist of all time. Play a firebird because of him.
Saw him in 1977 with a new band 38 special my first concert
The loudest concert I ever went to was Johnny Winter. My ears rang for days.
Awesome. Tobacco road with Johnny and Edgar Winter is up next.
They came from the Port Arthur Texas area.Johnny Winters died overseas in a hotel room at 70 years of age. I think his twin brother Edgar is still alive I believe.
Muddy Waters!!! BB King...hello!
Saw Johnny live in 1972 when he and Rick Derringer were playing together. This is 10 years later and I guess Rick had moved on. The JW live album from my era is one of the greatest ever. Listen to “Rock and Roll Hoochy Koo,” the two guitars burning up a duet.
Cant believe you've never heard Johnny Winter. I have a really cool water color painting of him hanging in my living room right next to my lithograph portrait of Duane Allman.
Duane started playing slide guitar because of Johnny
I saw Johnny Winter 2009 live in Germany < that was fun! :) *go
He was the legendary albinistic, cross-eyed & legally blind musician!
B.B.King -> check out "Blue Boys Tune" ♥
This bass player was with him at Woodstock and was later with Stevie Ray Vaughn for many years.
Johnny and Edgar Winters were albino brother who due to their condition weren't allowed outside much growing up so they put all their energy into playing music Johnny was great with guitar where Edgar excelled playing the piano, sax and drums. Check Edgar playing "Frankenstein"!!!!!!
Love Johnny Winter and great reaction.
As a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan you should check Ally Venable, a young Texas (like Johnny Winter and SRV) singer guitarist who credits SRV as the reason she learned guitar. She does a tribute to SRV and has toured with and/or played with Buddy Guy, Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard among others. Ally is the next generation of blues guitarists. Her latest album spent three weeks at #1 on the Bliiboard Blues charts.
Johnny Winter And - live. Best live album ever.
As everyone else in the comments is saying, you also need to check out Jonny's brother Edgar. Sometimes they played together and sometimes they played in separate bands. But you also need to check out Rick Derringer who played with both Johnny and Edgar. Especially listen to Rick Derringers's playing on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo", "Frankenstein", and his guitar solo on Steely Dan's "Chained Lightning". And speaking of Steely Dan, check out Larry Carlton's solo on "Don't Take Me Alive" and check out Steve Gadd's drum solo over Wayne Shorter's sax solo in Steely Dan's "Aja".
Chuck Berry, wrote Johnny Be Good, need to check out his brother Edgar Winters Frankenstein
And Chuck wrote this song for his piano player, Johnnie Johnson, using a fictional guitar player, since that's what Chuck was and he was the frontman...and what a frontman he was!
Cool!
I went to every Johnny or Edgar Winter ( and several times, Johnny with Edgar, and his band White Trash) concert in Detroit from 1970, opening for Three Dog Night, with The Small Faces, as second act, until about 1975. Saw him twice later, with Muddy Waters, and James Cotton (Harmonica legend). Muddy Waters was a blues legend, when B.B. King was a disc jockey. One of the pioneers of Electric slide guitar, along with Elmore James (the originator of " One Way Out", made famous by the Allman Brother's cover on "Live at the Fillmore," and more recently covered by Larkin Poe, the "Little Sisters of the Allman Brothers". Check out Johnny's cover of " Help Me", or "Mean Town Blues" if you want to hear some wild slide guitar! 😎👍
