I was with Johnny and Edgar in high school. They were the best musicians I’ve ever known. My bass was not even in the same universe. Thank You for this, brings back good memories.
I grew up down the road in Groves, graduated from Port Neches-Groves H.S., then went to Lamar. Johnny and Edgar made us proud.
@@itsjustmeMike527 absolutely, Janis Joplin did also. I jammed some with her.
So cool you knew them.
Janis Joplin country,also.
Damn man ! I'm in my 60s and how I wish I was you !! God Bless you brother...I know this post is 8 months old but I'm just seeing it now ....im sure you have some good stories ??
Johnny was the real guitar God. No gimmicky playing behind his back. His speed & clarity are unmatched. Just shear talent coupled with relentless practice as a child & young man. He & Edgar, musical geniuses.
In his prime Johnny was a monster player...truly awesome ! We are lucky such footage still exists that showcases his brilliance...
That's a very nice compliment but Johnny won a Grammy six months after he died in 2014 and this April his brother Edgar put out a tribute album to him with his music and other stars playing on it that won a Grammy so I would be careful with the word Prime
I saw him live 20 years ago, well after what someone would consider his "prime" and he still blew me away. It was a festival in Italy, I was there to see Robert Plant, I never even heard about Johnny. That night changed everything. "Prime" is subjective.
His brother Edgar is amazing too.
I fell in love with Johnny Winter when my brother brought home his first live and I heard him play. 'It's my own fault' . The best guitarist ever .
The guitar solo on It's my own Fault" from the Johnny winter Live album is the best ever recorded in my opinion. The version of Johnny B Goode on that album is also the best recording of that song.
@@peach495 Indeed an amazing performance, with Rick Derringer sharing guitar duties.
I had that album too and "It's my own fault" set the bar for blues guitar playing. Blew Clapton out of the water.
Johnny Winter is maybe in the top 2 or 3 Blues guitarists ever. I had an old Backlight poster of Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter as Rock super heroes in my bedroom back in 1967. Those two, along with Rory Gallagher, are my top three of all time.
Yep, that's about right!
Add SRV for a top 4 mixup
You left out maybe the best ever, Skydog Duane Allman.
3 great choices but may I suggest you add SRV. Stevie Ray Vaughn was the G.O.A.T. in my opinion.
spot on
The Texas tornado was just built different! Started listening to JDW back in 1970...Johnny could hold his own against any guitarist in his day.. RIP Johnny
In his day or any day!
I never knew how good he actually was until the last 10 years. He's really a brilliant player with a good sense of melody and rhythm, a legend!
There was a time back in the 70s he was considered the fastest guitar player in the world.
Sure he was fast, there's a lot of fast players...that means little to seasoned, aficionados of the blues. He was a game changer, a true maverick who paved the way for many blues rockers, with a gutsy, fast & fluid virtuosity like no other, before or since. Driven by an absolute & sincere passion for the genre, a collection of several thousands of vintage blues records, dating back it's early, 20th century, recorded origins. His original Columbia era drummer, Uncle Red Turner, testfied how he could literally play any of those songs at will. Tommy Shannon called both he and his younger brother, Edgar, geniuses.
Here's an early example of his greatness, with Uncle Red Turner & Tommy Shannon;

Woodstock ✌️🍷. Him and Ted Nugent
@@markwilliams5606 Yes I liked his performance at Woodstock. I also liked Canned Heat's set.
Him and Alvin Lee
I find it amazing that now that he’s been dead for quite a while now that people are just now finding his genius with the guitar. I first saw Johnny and Edgar in 1970 when I was in high school. One concert and I was hooked. Great musicians. Johnny was a monster with the guitar and Edgar was the boss with keyboards, percussion, and saxophone. I was fortunate to see him at the Dallas House of Blues in the early 2000’s when he was quite an old man and had to be escorted on stage to a chair to play. But he still had the skills, amazing performance that brought me back to those early high school years. I still listen to Johnny and Edgar’s music today. God Bless you Johnny!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
One the best ever!
Highway 61!
The whole family was talented musicians!! 🔥🔥🔥
we were blessed to see musicians who would actually jam their asses off for every gig back in the 70's.
Amazing talent guitar and voice yet a very humble man. Rare qualities. Rip john dawson winter the third.
Johnny knew he was good, and always thought he would be successful.
Love Johnny Winter. Incredible musician and kicks azz playing/singing blues. His album "White Hot and Blue" is one of my favorites. RIP Johnny true blues Winter
Thanks for mentioning that oft forgotten gem, a personal favourite of mine👍🏻
The man was awesome. Had fingers longer than any I've ever noticed. Threw a little Yankee doodle in to boot.
The late, great, Johnny Winter. Shredding with the best of them. Nice selection, Cynthia!
I saw him in concert along with chuck berry doing a guitar- off. At the Filmore East. Mind boggling!
I was lucky enough to see him live. The man could transport you to another dimension.
I saw Johnny not long before he passed. He played at Infinity Hall in Ct. He stayed after the show to sign anything anybody wanted. He rocked. I miss him. Rock on.
I got to see him a couple of yrs before he passed. When he came out, a guy lead him out to a wooden chair & I was thinking "uh-oh..this is going to be sad".. Then he started playing like you wouldn't believe, really wailing on the guitar!
I was in shock & thrilled. Glad I got to see him.
Yeah, when Johnny was on he was untouchable!!
So glad you're listening to this master guitarist. Among those who Hendrix called "the best," Winter was one.
Seen JW 3 times in Portland Oregon. I think second winter is my favorite record!!
Johnny Winter was my first concert when I was in 7th grade. The two warm up.bands were Bon Seagar and Wet Willie.
Johnny was a bad, bad man, when he played the sky would turn black and thunder and lightning would start to flash! When he was on tour it was, lock your doors at night, Johnny Winters has come to town.
W I N T E R
There’s nothing funny about his music.
my all time favorite player, they don't make like this anymore. Love it.
The rockingest albino musician along with brother edgar both rockn their snow white hair & albino skin & their pink eyeballs. R. I. P. JOHNNY
His rhythmic approaches to some of those lines is mind boggling.
''Dallas'' and ''TV Mama'' are two steaming hot tracks by Johnny
Next , Johnny Winters group, Frankenstein. And then Johnny and Edgar Tobacco Road..
My parents bought me the first Johnny Winter album for Christmas 1969. They were not really hip parents either. They were just big on audio equipment and records.
Johnny was amazing! His work with Muddy Waters brought out the best in both of them.....
True bad ass on the guitar...he just command s it to do whatever he wants it to do
Very glad to see you feature Johnny, he was a huge influence in my musical journey. The speed and attack he had was killer. A true bluesman, I miss him.
his entire concerts are played at 150% every song every concert he is the absolute best blues guitar player no exeptions!. seen him many many times and always plays like a forest fire or tsunami he blows everyone away!!
It seemed to me that Johnny never got his just deserts as far as being one of the greats of his time. I'm so glad that many have now come to realize just how great he was. Too bad most of these people never got to see that 150% he gave every time I saw him , and I saw Johnny Winter live @ 40+ times since I was 15 I am 66 now . I am so thankful I grew up with Johnny Winter's music . He was the best but seldom got the recognition respect he should have. And he was a real humble good guy to boot ! I miss you Johnny
i saw Johnny and Edgar Winter back in the early 1970's and concerts then were raw and really rocked!
Yes chuck would be proud ❤ what a kicking tune ❤
Que maravilloso gracias Harri
i saw johnny live several times, what a great talent. i recently saw a photo where from 1962-johnny was playing bass guitar backing up country singer george jones. and, johnny played with a thumbpick. he was quite the shredder with a unique style.
I saw Johnny in his hey' day...all he did was walk out on stage in a black robe, just him and a a spotlight...he simply said " YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH ! And we never left our feet ! This was 51 yrs ago !!! He was just the best in those days. I was 15 yrs old and swore one day I was going to play like that! To me he made that guitar talk ! I'm now 66 I'm as close I suppose as you could get at playing like him...but there will never be another. Simply the best !!! 🎶🎸❤️
One of the greats!
Rock Me Baby" live another great one to watch.
You need to hear Johnny Winter play blue's especially slide, he has a delta blue's style which muddy waters once said he wish Johnny was his son.
The drummer and bass player are awesome too. They are a well oiled machine
Bad Ass Bass And Drums!
The 'Albino" guitar God...Ty brother Harri
I saw Johnny Winter 2 times live, never saw anyone compared to him as a guitar player and seeing a multitude of concerts in my in my life other than Eddie Van Halen, which would be a whole another genre and or style.
This is totally amazing!! Hendrix did an awesome version too.
Johnny didn't get the recognition he deserved.
His version of "It's My Own Fault" has some of the best blues guitar I've ever heard.
Absolutely TRUE !
One of the great blues artists! I love his song "Illustrated Man" and his versions of "Messin' with the Kid" and "Don't Take Advantage of Me".
Got the Mona Lisa on ma Keister!
Always one of my favorite guitarists, R.I P johnny.
Hey if you like you'll love Johnny winter and live. He kills that guitar
Well ! LoL ! Johnny be good by this guy ? are you kiddin me ? That s what we hear when you say his name ! I saw that guy live in a small venue like this one ! at Le Spectrum club on Ste-Catherine St. in Montreal ! So that place is alot better than going to the forum or the Olympic stadium ! it s a club with tables and waitresses serving whatever you like to drink ! Most people drank beer ! Cowboy boots, hat and all ! that cowboy plays Guitar ! the funny part is it was unexpected ! i was just walking by the club and watching all the people getting in ! So i checked the poster of who was playing and saw it was him ! OMFG it ignited electricity in my body ! i went to see if i could bye a ticket and i did and found a nice table on the mezzanine right in the middle and it wasn t far because it s a small place ! Wow ! i ll never forget that and i really enjoy this stream tonight ! thanks !🤠
Wow, nice, i saw him in the Netherlands in a verry small hall, he was amazing. 👊👍😁
I had the privilege of seeing Johnny Winter live around 1981 at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA. What an amazing talent.
About time the true GOAT, should check out Bony Moronie Live, Jumping Jack Flash live 1974.
I was Lucky to see him live in my hometown in 1991. LOVE Johnny ❤️ rest in peace
Muddy Waters said that Johnny Winter was the best Blues Guitarist he'd ever heard in his entire life. He did a version of BB King's "Be Careful With A Fool" on his second album that showcases some of his very best playing. Check it out.
Johnny Winter was my favorite.Guitar.player. There was nobody like him. They broke the. Mold so original.
Give a listen to Jumpin' Jack Flash, off "Johnny Winter And, Live" also. It's by far the best rendition of that song too. Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited is another incredible version!
Harri, please check out his live Johnny Winter And live album! It's lethal.
Thank you Cynthia for this awesome clip. I saw Johnny back in the 90s at the Sacramento Blues festival. He was an absolute force of nature. Blew the entire crowd away.
@@Cynthia... yeah, I just now read that.
You nailed it. He WAS a force of nature. Few can stand alone like that. Hendrix, Beck, Healy, Jaco, and Edgar Winter to.
Ah, I commented about him on one of your videos, he was incredible, I've got at least 10 shows... he knew how to get a crowd moving! This was a typical encore song.
Despite Johnny Winter released his first solo album in 1969, I really started enjoying his style when I first heard Muddy Waters' album "I'm Ready" - 1978 (in fact Johnny produced this album too). After that he became one of my favorite guitar players due to his superb technique. Some of his albums (i.e. "Guitar Slinger" - 1984; "Serious Business" - 1985; "Let me In" - 1991; or "Hey, Where's your Brother?" - 1992) are truly legendary works in Blues history.
Dear Harri, time to really discover Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) skills as well. You have already reacted to some of their musics, but in fact you've been missing the best of them. Strongly suggest you to react to "Ten Years After - I Can't Keep from Crying - 8/4/1975 - Live Winterland Official". Check also Leo Lyons skills on the bass guitar. MONSTERS!!!!
I have some his earlier work, his Imperial album us excellent. Jim .
"Guitar Slinger" and "Serious Business" were two of my first twenty CDs/
I'm Ready is phenominal!
THANK YOU....THANK YOU,,,for doing this reaction to the one and only Johnny. He has some of the best rock and blues albums ever. He is right up there with the greatest guitarists ever. BTW: I was at this show and it was awesome. You should try his take on The Stones "Stray Cat Blues" or "Let it Bleed" .
Exactly! Nobody covered the Stones as well as Johnny. They wrote Silver Train in his honour‼️
yes they did and he even does it better than their version...lol@@loilt5091
This lineup played in Toronto, in around 1987. Opened for George Thorogood at CNE Stadium. On top of Johnny and the great drumming, that bass player was really impressive.
Amazing player.
Listen to " Memory Pain" & you will hear SRV's early influences. They grew up in the same 'hood,South Oak Cliff,Dallas. You can hear it here, too.
Johnny’s from Beaumont…Jimmie & Stevie are Dallas, Alice.
My favourite guitarist of all time, thankyou for your amazing tribute. To the Merlin of the 🎸
Crazy good!
yes he was- Johnny was on another planet when it came to guitar
I saw Johnny first in 1969 at the Texas Pop Festival but again around 78. He was opened by one of Dallas’ best guitarists, Johnny challenged him to a battle and he left the local guitarist in the dust. Out of respect I don’t want to name the other guitarist but he couldn’t compare to Johnny.
Nobody in their right mind would try and out sling him playing blues…I know, respectfully, that Duane Allman once boasted he could “cut” Johnny. I’ll readily admit at THAT point in time, Duane’s slide playing was more developed & nuanced. As a straight blues guitarist…forget it Duane⁉️
Johnny really had a lot of soul in him. Been listening to him since I saw his debut in the Fillmore East 69' or something. But, his first two albums were fantastic. "Drown in My Own Tears". If you never heard it do it now. You won't regret it.
Could you thank what people would think of this in 1954 when they hear this it’s hearing iggy pop playing his music loud the first punk group
I saw him live in a small club in upstate New York back in the 70's. He had enough energy to light up Time's Square.
Johnny could play the slide with the best- his Blues was among the best- his Rock & Roll is OUTSTANDING - my personal belief is he is top 5 EVER
Saw him 3 times back in 70s. King of the Fluid blues. No gadgets on his guitars.
A friend of Johnny is friend a friend of mine :) 3 piece band here. Listen to Captures live where an additional guitarist is the mix.
Great to see your reaction yeah he was up there with Hendix and Clapton on the guitar side of things Have a listen to his version of the old Ray Charles song Drown in my own tears ? From 1969 with his brother Edgar Winter is a superb vocal performance Etta James live in Montreux is another amazing performance of the same song cioa
Great song version 🥰🤩😍 Thank you Cynthia 🥰🥰🥰
Johnny Winter the Texas Tornado or Johnny the Guitar Hurricane RIP JW......
Texas Guitar Slim
My oh my Cynthia. Just a great choice. Winter's arrived early. Lol Such a great electrifying tune. Perfection. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cynthia.
Magnificent choice. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
holly crap you killed me with that one never heard that version that was imposible
Johnny was a genuine guitarist gun slinging. His licks could rattle your mind, lol.
Love you, Harri, for your nice command. That's what Johnny deserves! He was one of the best! Have you seen his performance on Woodstock?
I remember Edgar Winter from my sister who turned me onto him with the album ”They Only Come Out at Night”. Missed out on Johnny Winter but WOW!!! What a FANTASTIC musician!!! 🎸
This may be the infamous gig where a thrown bottle just missed him and he walked off after scolding the crowd
I saw him in a small club, The Picklebarrel, in Vermont ca. 1990. So underrated. So not talked about as much as others. Another in this category is Roy Buchanan. Try his version of Hey Joe.
Roy Buchanan's version of "Sweet Dreams" from the movie, "The Departed," will blow you off the planet!
Do not miss Roy Bs take of Down By the River. RIP Roy
Chuck Berry would be very happy & proud !
If you haven't, react to Tobacco Road by Johnny and Edgar Winter, live!
I saw this guy play a lot through the years. Yes, he was amazing...
In this universe it is me who is the best in playing like Johnny Winter. Thank you for this video. Greetings from a humble guy.
Johnny Winter's command of the electric guitar is unequalled.
Just listen and wonder.
Great video trust me nobody's that good at anything
Johnny is the only guitarist with a lick for every second of the day! Met them all...Johnny, Tom Compton, and Jon Paris!
Love your "Johnny Summer" and "illegal" comment!!! (:
Just LOVE that little bar of Yankee Doodle in the solo!
Amazing how he plays the chorus pedal in perfect time.
Man I could listen to this all day and night 🌉
His slide work will blow your mind.
Terrific cover! Great choice, Cynthia. Another flower in your bonnet! :)
Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughn are the two. Oddly or not Tommy Shannon, got his roots with Johhny and eventually moved on to play bass with Stevie Ray.
