Hey Christoph, let me just add some things to your comments as an Ex-GW-employee who has been in the Golden Demon jury for three years, back in the days where we had Games Days in Germany. First of all, it is really, really hard to come up with standards of how to judge so many brilliant entries, whittling them down to just a handfull of finalists alone is a painful process. Back in the day, it was down to each individual judge personally (including last year‘s winner) how to weigh creativity, execution and other factors. We were not given any agenda or scheme to follow by the company, which many painters actually assumed we would. One thing that is overlooked by most people who only get to see the pictures is that lacking consistency was often a crucial criteria, meaning that if you have like five absolutely smashing entries and two have to go, oftentimes little inconsistencies on the back or side of the entry are crucial. And you usually do not see this on the pictures. I am happy to answer questions if you have any 😊

I believe such criteria would be important for the participants to know before hand. Not knowing how a contest is judged doesn't make for a good environment for competition.

I remember in the 80s and 90s GW used to do near enough whole issues of White Dwarf dedicated to Golden Deamon
Those were the golden times - we had White Dwarfs as thick as a „normal“ magazine…
White dwarf lost all its quality in 2011.
Entered Youngbloods this year and got commended entry, but my entry picture got lost somehow so it wasn't in the article - very unfortunate because I was hoping for a video like this with feedback 😂
Games workshop only listen to money anything else is not important, that's why the let the scalpers buy all the pre orders for the limited stock they release

Maybe that entry had errors, iv heard that judges look for errors and inconsistencies rather than how good a piece is.

Now if only they would listen to the complaints about scalpers getting priority over actual customers.
IMO, they should not only show winners/commended entries, they should show a selection of people's minis that didn't place at all.
Now get them to fix their poor distribution of box sets or do something to deal with scalpers/re-sellers so we will be able to get those models to paint/use

It appears that they base their decision off of what model is painted, and who paints it. Not so much the sheer talent or effort.
The Skink Chameleon composition is perfect. So atmospheric and immersive.
The money GW make, a pdf download of all entries in Golden Demon would be a great compliment to all entrants

Holy shit, I just looked up the winners for this year and oooooh my god! I'm genuinely in shock at how good all the entries are this year. The diorama of Mephiston versus demons is mind-blowing.

golden demon is such a neat thing. i know its maybe an unrealistic standard to set for yourself but its always the type of thing i've wanted to desperately to feel like its something i could qualify for even just a finalist pin. its so awesome seeing peoples unique takes on miniatures.

I've been stunned by how poorly GW handles photos of even the winners. One photo of smallish size? Just wild. Games Workshop has always, and seemingly will forever be prisoner's of their own decision. The popularity of this game could be 10 fold...

As a pretty new warhammer person I don’t even feel like they do the winners justice.. There is usually just one pic each, not super hd, not super close-up; no spin, no gallery. I don’t feel like that’s enough even for single figs let alone squads and dioramas, which I can often barely even see. How hard is it to just take more pics, cmon! Not everything needs to be super studio style, just snap a thousand and dump ‘em on an insta

I find it strange to have pieces of art compete with each other. I just don't get it. In art, competition should NOT be a significant factor in growing one's art. It is very, very strange. To observe or even judge art in a competitive context produces a very narrow understanding of artistic work.

It’s just like the food contests on the Food Network. If you have 3 four star chefs that made brilliant dishes, they begin to nitpick on such things like plating and superficial nonsense.
Like it or not, no matter how you feel about it, someone has to lose and someone had to be 2nd and 3rd.
Well, we still don't have Legion of the Damned rules, so apparently they didn't listen very fking hard.
I dont think you can have a true painting competition without having a full list of how people will be judged and having a specific model that will be for that competition.
Alot of times people think the cooler looking model should win. Or maybe it does. People were upset with that skink last year, but it was on point. Still a model can have alot of effecton on the overall presentation.
The judges should also be listed ahead of time and their prior experience and what they are looking for would be nice but hard to do.
If everyone had to Paint Horus for an event we would get to compare execution of that model and be able to compare between them all.
They still don't allow fanfilms which is reason enough for me to only buy from other model sellers or used models. They aren't getting a buck from me until they reframe that kind of thinking!
Listening to the community is a charitable wqy of putting it. Another way to out it could be eing shamed publicly

You know ..we love warhammer because they do what they want.. and what they want is epic .. the Last thing i want is them to listen to us ..that day Will mark the Last day of warhammer ..every time a franchise listen to they player base they die.. People dont know what they want and they(me include) are too dumb do make the right choice !!❤
Showing "commended entries" shows a few people that they were really close and *a* *lot* more people that they were not really close. X)

The Road to Golden Demon diorama is incredible! Probably would've won if the artist had made miniature Citadel paints instead 😂😂
One thing coming from a different area of competition (Winter Drumline) I do wonder if even how simple a scorecard would be to some extent. To me it's crazy that you either know you won, were commentated, a finalist, or nothing. It can be hard to realize where you need to improve in their eyes, and if anything how close to the next bracket you were. I feel like they need a bit more robustness in the scoring and transparency in it to promote better competitive health. A lot of resentment can come out if one person wins and the other doesn't and they don't ever know why. I'd rather disagree with a judge than to have that animosity directed towards fellow competitors.
I understand this is done in expo's and probably isn't as supported as wide as it is, but if it's such an accolade, the process should actually make it feel purely earned and not dice roll.

I was wondering, can you recommend or talk about other painting competitions you know of/like?
It feels like Golden Demon is the only one getting talked about in the warhammer space, but it's such a limiting competition to compete in. I hate how you have to cater to a specific style.
There are always some things that create a stir every Gd. This year, for me, was the fact that Tael did not get a commended for his bust in the open. Many rumors as to why, I would love to know, but we will never get this info I think.
It would also be nice if they shot 360° photos for the winners.
We know they have access to that format as it’s used on the retail website.

Of the two I think I prefer the high elf by Jose David Gonzalez Ramos as the cape reminds me a lot of rose petals, something about the saturation and slight peach tone in the highlights contrasted against the deep magenta/purple shadows is just very pleasing to me, also the base just has more of a contrasting palette from that of the mini which makes it appear more interesting to me. overall the light and dark balance also seems a lot more dynamic which I enjoy. Both are wonderful but Jose's is my favourite.
That is awesome, I liked having the other models to look at, it helps the winners stand out even more and helps show how technique can make or break an entry. So glad you all pushed to have this happen and GW actually listened!

Much better to see them all and give some respect to the time, effort and guts to submit! bravo GW, and those who speak up to things like this. We are just starting to see the potential of our old game as it hits mainstream.

It's a kitbash using FW Perturabo as a base. Helmet, left hand, abs, spiky trim, hammer head all sculpted on top :)

There is a very similar looking 3D printable Demon Perturabo but it’s not quite as nice looking as this one. I was thinking of doing the similar conversion myself but it’ll never get painted. Need to know where he got the helm
No, they haven't. Until they give card blank to all independent creators and Alphabusa is back with their 40k project they have not listened.
The whole exercise still seems pretty toxic. It seems like the criteria is "everything other than what would encourage newcomers." And one might say, of xourse, we want to reward skile, talent, and time spemt on one model. Okay, so maybe make separate categories for first timers, creativity, etc. Because as it is a lot of people are not motivated and are actually discouraged by it. Even amazing past winners I hear saying they are not interested in entering anymore.

Honestly there were also a lot lot of highly respected public figures (grey, comets, ex eavy etc) that made high level entries and didn’t get a trophy. I feel like that may have added pressure to expand the perceived reward of entering the competition but not necessarily winning a demon.
