Tyla reminds me of the stereotypical popular girl character in teen movies. Not the mean ones but the ones that cant do wrong in everyones eyes because they have looks and talent. So I think the people that don’t like those kind of characters in movies are the people that dont like Tyla lol

Olivia Rodrigo was holding a damn microphone in her hand and she won during her moment speaking on the preshow when they gave her the award. So ofcourse she had a hard time, Not to mention she asked someone off camera to hold the award, not two superstars like Lil nas X and halle bailey who didn’t get awards.
Tyla was holding nothing BUT the award, Olivia already had something in her other hand and wasn’t waiting to be announced but doing something where she didn’t know she’d be getting one. Two different scenarios.

I think people don’t like of the coloured controversy and have decided to hate on her since then. Also there’s deffo projection cuz people are making up that fact she thinks she’s better than black Americans or that she thinks she’s better cuz she’s light skin when she never said it. There’s so much projecting insecurities into tyla which is sad. Lastly, there’s a lot of xenophobia going on because she’s African that she needs to dilute her personality to fit into American culture which is extremely imperialist. Lots of the hate definitely started after the racial identification topic…it’s a shame really because we should be encouraging mixed people to acknowledge ALL parts of their heritage, not just the black side. And Tyla is about 25% black…25% has never been a whole 🥴

The thing is...Tyla's personality is VERY "South African". Coming from a South African myself, we often "act" this way. I understand that people may see her as over-energetic or too much' BUT you have to understand that's how we are raised. I've read a few of these comments that say she lacks relatability or a good backstory, but imo, someone who is talented and clearly works hard doesn't need to be 'tragic' to be good. I find her relatable as she makes music related to the music in South Africa but makes it HERS and she is South African. I'm not saying that her whole personality should be based on this BUT she is going to be relatable for a group, and not all. Additionally, her songs tell a story which anyone can listen to the lyrics and form their own connections to their own lives. She doesn't need to tell a tale of her background to justify this, she is curating her own story by being an artist. Also the award thing? Yes, I do think that it was a bit overplayed but she did say please and wasn't rude about it.

As an African American woman who is very unfamiliar with South African culture, There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with Tyla.

Tyla isn’t an afrobeats artist. She is an amapiano artist. Afrobeats is Nigerian amapiano is South African. The fact that these two things are being grouped together is problematic. And the fact that a light skinned racially ambiguous artist is being propped up above black Nigerian artists in their own categories is problematic. Is it her fault directly? Absolutely not. But I think that the powers that be are really trying to push her in an attempt to lighten and brighten the face of African music genres, just like what’s happened with all other types of black music. Black Americans are peeping it and while I don’t think the hate towards her directly is warranted, her not acknowledging race, out of fear or obliviousness to how much it unfortunately does matter in this country is going to be a turn off to a lot of people unfortunately.

THEY HATE the fact that she refuses to back peddle on what she said. Imagine someone telling you that something you were told all your life was wrong, and having to adjust to that in real time in front of millions. She's given little grace and The hate grows with every award she gets. I hate that it's predominantly from ONE demographic.

I saw another angle, a fan cam of the award acceptance and she was clearly motioning to Nas. I showed it to a lady who was going on about how "she tried my girl Halle". The lady saw the video and said "she has her perspective and I have mine and this changes nothing". Just goes to show people will believe what they want to regardless of reality. The more successful you get, the more people want to "hate".

All mainstream artists are backed by the industry. Do you think Drake would be where he's at were it not for Wayne and his connections? Do you think Kendrick or The Weeknd would be as big as they are, if Drake did not help shine a light on them during his Take Care tour? Networks are how artists get big, no mainstream artist gets there without support from the industry in one way or another.

They should both be getting shine but the industry wont allow. The industry has been having black american artists fight for scraps by only ever classifying them as rnb or hiphop or only ever awarding them in those categories, and now they are doing the same to us africans, which is why we only ever get nominate in one category even though artists like tems, ayra starr and tyla herself can fit into so many other categories. I also feel like tyla is the only african getting that shine because she's the main one making a marketing push in the US. The rest are aiming for a more international reach

She's a product of the ongoing issue wit labels today - she has NO artist development. They are just giving these young adults money and fame but no training. That was clear with her breakfast club interview. She was asked the hard questions and she just looked at her manager or whoever she was to save her.

I think the problem is she's bubbly and cute now, but to the Americans market that gets bored and annoyed very quickly, we expect growth and maturity at certain stages of success or better yet, appreciation of your fans. We're use to a certain standard set previously so her behavior might play well oversees or on the continent but you have to tone it down if you want longevity here. do i think tyla was doing too much? not really. we've seen a glimpse of her personality already. she knows she's that girl. and i think that the entire video of halle, lil nas x and her was taken out of context. however i do believe that she didn't deserve that award. i find it a lil wild that you completely ignored the other african artist in the best afrobeats category! ayra starr! she's always been that girl! im not trying to compare ayra and tyla because their fans have already done enough of that & there's nothing to compare. the difference between the is language they sing in. tyla sings in english while ayra uses pigin which is a mix of yoruba and English. ayra starr debuted a whole two years before water blew up! and she definitely deserved that award. she dropped a really dope album this year and i've been rooting for her ever since she became apart of the mavin (her label) family). she's even done a song with tyla and the two seem to be close friends. i just believe that everyone should been pushing ayra the same way they pushed tyla. and i don't wanna hear no sorry ass excuse like "but her accent is so thick?! i can't understand anything she's saying!" yeah but Americans love aya nakamura and bad bunny. two non-american artists who don't speak English primarily in their music.

I feel like an artist these times you need to be more relatable and humble people are tired of the fake facade and people get anything without having humility and hard work involved. We are moving into AI ( which is so fake ) and the rise of TikTok and relatability.
Relatability is so important these days. It’s apparent when an artist feels a bit out of touch with reality, because they never had to work hard!
Honestly, I really don’t like it when celebrities act relatable. Most of the time it comes across as very fake since celebrities don’t have the same experiences we do. There’s only a small amount of celebs for whom it works🤷🏼♀️

Artists create art and we interact with it. That's it. That's the relationship and the exchange between an artist and an audience.
The idea that on top of their talent they also *have* to be humble, hardworking, likeable, grateful, and a walking wishlist of ideal traits is inviting audiences to project their own ideals on to artists. Then they get angry when the artist has a personality of their own that isn't in line with who they want or imagine them to be.
Artists aren't supposed to be avatars or extensions of their audience...
Relatability is really a demand for parasocial fakery. People want multimillionaires to lie to them and pretend that they are really 'just like them', or the boy or girl next door. They need them to justify their come up with a rags-to-riches story--real or fake.

She was trying to balance the award on her one hand to free the other one but by the time she reached out to grab the card, Halle already pulled it away. Watch it again. Also, I think she was really nervous. I could actually hear it in her voice. Why can’t she be given some grace?

Mixed kids were removed from the Black communities in South Africa, given a new identity “coloured”, forced to create new community of just mixed families, they were also able to create their own CULTURE. separate from any other culture in South Africa.
The idea that once someone is mixed with Black, they should identify as Black and ONLY Black_ is a social construct.
And this is coming from a Zulu woman in Africa, as Black as they come.
All our lives we were told that Coloured is a race in my country. And of course I was always aware of how Americans perceive “Being Black” but I never thought they would take this much offence about how “our masters” decided to run things in Africa.

Let’s REALLY get into it. Olivia didn’t ask anyone to hold it. She accepted it on stage, held it while giving her speech and later on the carpet mentioned it was heavy in passing and someone came to grab it for her. People may very well have been waiting for a moment to “pounce” on Tyla but this scenario (along with others) has rubbed many people the wrong way. I do in fact think the whole exchange was tacky on stage, from her not grabbing the cards from Halle who was clearly motioning her to take it, to asking the presenters (fellow, more notable artists) to hold it the way she did. And had she’d been a white artist asking these black artists to hold it y’all would DEFINITELY be up in arms. But I see it as an inherent lack of respect for those around you type thing. Had the lady who assisted her from her seat to the stage been asked to hold her award, I honestly don’t believe anyone would have had an issue. I think it was the lack of procedures in place that made it look tacky; as if she lacked tact to keep asking the way she did and didn’t respect the fact she’d be given this award. I think her defiant unwillingness to hold it, also emphasized to many they don’t believe she really earned this award or involved herself with the process it took to get it because from their perspective she fast tracked fame. Though, I can understand that narrative and I don’t necessarily agree. Ultimately, I just think shawty is often tacky as heck. Down to staring in the camera, as she suddenly stopped dancing to Mamushi 😂. And lacks the American understanding of media training. Ultimately, I do think people have a right to be bothered by this situation but also should identify why they see it as a way to dismiss Tyla entirely from this one exchange.

Solution better than confusion
As a South African what I find frustrating is that americans refuse to reconcile with the reasons why the western market is the center of the music and arts industry globally. Some Americans seem to believe that this came about through the merit of American artists and therefore American audiences and industry actors are inherently entitled to some level control over anything that does "make it" in the American music scene given their experience and role as "taste makers". The reality of the situation is that American entertainment dominance exists in the shadow of American imperialism and global military and media dominance. The infrasture americans use to market their artists globally is the same infrastructure used to spread anti-indigenous exploitation propoganda around the world. To me American audiences are not simply being used or pandered to in the way some of y'all think. African and other global artists are being forced to interact with y'all to achieve the noteriety and importantly fair monetary compensation for their contributions to global artistry. Americans created and upholds systems of hirearchy that place Americans and American money at the center of the musical universe. Its seems uncouth then for Americans, who benefit from this system, to be mad that global artists are particpating in the fucked up music industry that y'all established and maintain, which demands a level of pandering and assimilation.
In an ideal world global artists would not have to assimilate or "respect" the American market in the specific everchanging and unknowable unless defined ways they deem respectful and can rather be judged on the value of their artistry or be met with the understanding that there are cultural differences that affect and inform artistic expression and mannerisms. This ideal world is not yet here.
Nevertheless, South Africans and other members of global south are force fed American media through out our lives. Its the reason why the average global citizen can argue nuances in your political landscape with factually informed nuances of the cold war, your presidential assinations, and proxy war politics etc. because our education and media institutions around the world consistently update us on the american situation. The same can not be said the other way around, not for other western states and not even for your our continental neighbours. Y'all dont learn about us because y'all arent forced to, because the subconscious ideology of American exceptionalism demands that you place American existence at greater value to all other things, even your own kin folk accross the sea. So then it becomes frustrating when we see global artists and fans of said artists being told that we are the ones that dont understand and we make no effort to understand American culture. When the reality is we know, we understand, and we are force fed your culture but we also make the choice not to erase our own culture and perform yours to be more palatable to you. In the past global artists like Rihana were forced to do so. Now global artists are in a better position to say no. We can now understand and respect one anothers cultures without forcing one another to assimilate to them.
Y'all want a melting pot but in South Africa we are a rainbow nation. We recognise one anothers cultural identities while maintaining and recognising the unity in our humanity.
