In South Africa we have 4 major race groups( black, coloured,white and indian).If you ask any black or white South African what is Tyla's race, they would tell you she's coloured. I think alot of ppl love Tyla because how confident and glowing her aura is. she's beautiful, talented and it shows.. we are living in a world where ppl are insecure getting all this surgery to feel good about themselves etc. she walks with class, she's not all ratchet and messy, very similar to Rihanna, Aaliyah and Beyonce. As a South African coloured I can testify that South African coloureds girls have a realy strict upbringing.Very respectfull with values and principles. As a proud South African of mixed race I want to say thank you for this objective and insightful podcast. I am not into the usual genres of African or South African music but I like Tyla and how she presents herself in the middle of all the nastiness and ignorance of most of the Black American people. On a positive note, she has unwittingly opened up the debate on race, colourism and black culture.

The people hating on her has no understanding of South African racial classifications, and especially how decent Coloured girls are raised. In our culture we frown upon girls who dance a certain way with men twice her age. Subconsciously, due to her obviously good upbringing, she would not allow herself to go along with what transpired during that episode with Usher, no matter how famous he is. People who don't understand South Africans will never understand. My daughter will just call a man a perv if he does what Usher tried, no matter what he meant by doing what he did. It is just not on in our society. Tyla was actually still respectful, trying to be very diplomatic about it. She must have felt very awkward that moment. The fact that he is famous is nothing compared to her deeply inculcated decency. She was raised well.

T.V chanells were also devided, public facilities etc. and of ofcourse amongst many other legislation, mating with a non white was illegal but there was already a population of mixed breeds who also happened to look like the San, (light skinned complexion), they were clumped together and labelled as colored. In admission of their role in bringing about some of this progeny, they gave the coloureds a higher social status than Blacks.

That stood out for me when I listened to her album....I listen to it all the time - Because it is so refreshing and easy on the ear. Tyla calling herself black is more offensive than her saying she’s coloured since coloureds did not endure the horrific experiences that black South Africans endured during apartheid, coloureds had some sort of privilege so accept her for she is a COLOURED.

Just like blacks were called the k-word, we were called the h-word. All people of colour suffered. Why do you think so many coloureds are All Blacks supporters? Because of their hate for the apartheid government. I have family members with horrific stories of being degraded during apartheid, and my heart bleeds for them.

During apartheid Cheryl Karoolus was one of the fore runners that campaigned for the ANC, Reiger Park was one of the places that hid the ANC leaders from the apartheid police. Trevor is not a Coloured though. He's Xhosa and mixed race. Coloured is a cultural group identity with its own language. It's a tribe.

@@MichelleBruintjies It was created by the Apartheid government. Because Blacks were the majority, they devised a policy of devide and rule according to tribe and location. T.V chanells were also devided, public facilities etc. and of ofcourse amongst many other legislation, mating with a non white was illegal but there was already a population of mixed breeds who also happened to look like the San, (light skinned complexion), they were clumped together and labelled as colored. In admission of their role in bringing about some of this progeny, they gave the coloureds a higher social status than Blacks.

As a liberal South African I'm still very concerned by the lyrics to Water. "You aint gotta go nowhere you can stay inside it"... I still love her, I just pray she doesn't go Diddy for the industry.
I must confess that i dont really care for the song at all i do like the piano vibe on it. Ans the African zest in the bum jive called Bacardi. Our sound and dance style is so different, so originally African i love it. Always loved it. All dance from this continent actually. Our very own. I have always described us coloureds as proudly coloured and black (2 things at the same time can be true) Is true.
I think like many young Black American artists (past & present), she is pursuing her dream, but finding out that she’s navigating treacherous waters and is probably trying not to get SA’d like all the others in the entertainment industry in the news right now. When you’re young and new you have no idea that you’re prey, and the new hors d’ oeuvre on the platter waiting to be devoured by a bunch of sick individuals. If I were her parents, I’d take her back home before it’s too late and put some clothes back on her.
