You know it's going to be OK when your Dad tells you it's going to be. What a smashing fella he is. Well done lads it's great to see it running and looking forward to the next one. ❤
They said that Jaguars were hard to work on way back in the 70's. But when you look under the bonet of a simple 4 cylinder engine car today the XJ6 is a piece of cake.
Can't help noticing you have already slipped into XJ6 driver mode - elbow on driver's door armrest, steering wheel held between thumb and forefinger!! They are wonderful cruising machines.
Well done lads yet another classic saved from the scrap yard. It's a pity that not more of these types of cars are not put back on the roads .. The timing chains have always been a problem with jaguars in the past.. However anyone who has a little knowledge of how a engine works can rectify a rattling chain on a old jag All I can say is I take my hat off to the pair of you .. with this project of yours... Anyway lads stay safe and well. I'm looking forward to the next project of yours..
Hi Mark - eventually found the Patron’s link. Perhaps make it a tad easier to find? but then I’m an old git… I’m interested in seeing how the QuickJacks go - I am thinking of buying some for my garage to straddle my shallowish pit. Hopefully you’ll show a bit of these being set up / in use. Great video and to see the old Girl running so well! Thank you!
The reason it isn't changing up into 3rd gear could down to the vacuum tube not being fitted. There should be a vacuum tube fitted that goes to the inlet manifold from the gearbox. I had the same problem when I did an engine swap on a 1973/4 SWB 4.2L XJ6. Seeing this car and being driven reminds me of a BRG 1978 XJ6 I had in the mi 1990's. Great progress lads!
Great job. Don’t over tension that chain though. But you seem to have it sorted. Seems to run great. By the way all xk engines had hardened valve seats from day one so you don’t need lead additives for that reason. Great video though.
Well done on this one Folks, superb cars, recall driving one of the first ones just in the car park of the company where I once worked, it belonged to an owner of the company and it was one of the first XJ6s produced and he had to pay a premium over the list price to get. Fabulous to feel it fitting around you and the smoothness (most cars then manual) of this was amazing. Keep up the great work!
As mentioned earlier, the rattling is likely below the center console (as your dad said) because the rubber is crumbling that holds the transmission support spring in place! It will definitely cause the rattling noise!
NEVER KNEW.. these cars have a "chain", DID know that they're a pushrod, I also own a fresh barn find 1978 Daimler Sovereign 4.2 LWB Auto.. This video has given me extended knowledge for my car.. THANK YOU !!! 👍👍
Well done, lads. You deserve that drive. Having had six of these, I can honestly say there is nothing like an XJ. The view down that bonnet and the driving sensation.... magnificent. Hope you hold on to this old girl. She has a great home with you boys. Brilliant.
As I remember you had to turn engine over to find the tightest spot of the chain and adjust it there . Good job its not the bottom chain! Still doable in the car but a long tedious job.
Proof if needed that you are a natural mechanic and can work through stuff, as for migraines I can get 3 in a row, nasty things, I am now 70 and can tell you that they lose their severity, something to look forward to as you age, great vid take care, Dave
At some point the lock pin has been hammered with a screw driver. Tool would push it back allowing rotation but it’s been damaged by screwdriver and hammer. Nice project.
They only have to put a piece of newspaper behind the rad if it sticks to the rad when running that should tell them the fans on wrong. Just wondering if they know there are winter and summer stats for these old motors.
Great video, with any luck once the gears and that rattles dealt with should be able to get the rear end sideways foot flat down on the accelerator in order to reinact a episode from the sweeney.
OK it looks clean what would concern me is the lack of OIL, also the chain is the same chain both sides , but I assume you are not familiar with this engine and you are learning as you go, WELL DONE. Looking over that bonnet reminds me of my 73 XJ6 I miss it so much they are timeless classics.
The "clunk" noise might be the gearbox mount , from memory its a biggish spring that is part of the mount which fails, that possibly could be the problem.? 👍👍👍...,👌
You were going the wrong way bud, should have been clockwise, I use coffee sticks with a tippex mark for tdc, great video, I've had all the jags, mk2, e types, xj6, s1, 2,3,v12,xjs plus modern ones.
The worst enemy of the XK engine was corrosion of the cyl head waterways . They corroded if coolant wasnt kept fresh. New coolants should prevent that if their are ok
The exhausts are very bad for rattles on jags.they have close clearances in areas and any looseness causes them to catch and knock and rattle.great to see it on the road tho.looking good.
Great video. Iv had 1978 4.2 41:12 Daimler sovereign vanden plar .mine is missin the choke like yours do you have problems with first start up .iv conected a cable as a manual choke seems to work but not the best . Whats u thinkin to do about choke
Rad could be blocked as its been stood so long, take it off and put some caustic soda in it, or have it re cored, hope it's not head gasket, tbh most jags I've owned have had failed HG, last one on an e type, I was putting a kettle full in every day.
So I'm presuming that when you "removed" those cam covers (inlet side and exhaust side), the fact that they are indeed "clean" indicates that "the valve oil seals" are good, Yes ??
I'm sure there's an honest answer to that but would be a bit awkward trying to explain to Police if they got pulled. I don't know how sympathetic they are to test-drives in old cars
Are you going to stoop down to our level, and explain WHY you think an engine shouldn't be turned anti clockwise ...your almightyness...!?!? ...or, are you just another armchair engineer who, actually, hasn't a clue .....!?!!??
not sure exactly who you are directing your comment at@@andymccabe6712 but you should remember it's always best to be polite on someone else's 'page'. Overuse of exclamation marks and question marks always makes me think of an angry confused person who is in line to make a fool of themselves. However, to hopefully answer your rant I found this on a Jaguar forum 'As already said, CLOCKWISE only, as you are looking at the front of the engine. Turning one of these backwards can damage the very expensive plastic chain tensioner, been there.' This was for the V12 admittedly but it makes sense to turn the engine in the way it would normally rotate
@@andymccabe6712 Jaguar XK engines have freewheeling pistons, turning them the wrong way might break the ratchet pawls. And yes, I'm being sarcastic :D
The clips showing different plates on the front and back were taken at different times. Given that DSG 2S is obviously a private reg (it now belongs to a red Vauxhall), YEL 877S is either the original reg or an age-related one. Either they sold the reg or it wasn't included in the sale, but it seems most likely that both plates were changed with the replacement reg before taking it out on the road.
Yer like a pair of auld wumen when your nattering back and forwards between you, I like it it's so natural that I almost feel I'm part of the conversation in the back seat. 😅😁 41:12

Was thinking this exact sentiment. I never had that from my Dad, but like to think my son welcomes it from me.
They said that Jaguars were hard to work on way back in the 70's. But when you look under the bonet of a simple 4 cylinder engine car today the XJ6 is a piece of cake.
It's not only about the engine. There is more to it that could give you a headache when working on an old Jag
One of the most beautiful and best cars Wiliam Lyons ever made.
You two are brilliant. When your dad says it’s going to be ok you know it will be.Keep up the good work.
youve got to love a old jag
Again seeing your dad and you, awesome..
Can't help noticing you have already slipped into XJ6 driver mode - elbow on driver's door armrest, steering wheel held between thumb and forefinger!! They are wonderful cruising machines.
Good job , I love the birds 🦅 in the background helping you concentrate..

If this isn’t what it’s all about then I don’t know what is. Wonderful.
So nice seeing the two of you calmly sort this car job by job. Plus beer, too!

I think your Dad is a very good man. Be glad he works with you.
you both look like two kids in a toy shop.Brilliant
Well done chaps. Very interesting 👍😎
Great Teamwork on The JAAAG ❤❤Big hammer on the job 👍👍Well Done 👍👍

A couple of big smiles during that drive out - lovely to see.
WELL DONE!
Great to see her running and driving on the road!!! Well done chaps!
It's great to see it on the road, well done lads! 😀
Best phrase used in this vid is "whatever it is we will fix it".
Wow loverly from Brit living in USA😊
At this point the car wizard would be @20000 bucks
Nice real world stuff , thanks chaps

nice to see one with a cloth interior
Your face told a story of emotions, initially nervous, worried about noises and temperature before thoroughly enjoying it at the end! Great stuff 👍
Excellent video enjoy watching
Brings back memories when I had mine , beautiful car.
Bloody lovely like….! 😊❤
I still love the look of these things. William Lyons really was a grand master of car design.
Well done those good fellas.
Great Video guys.
FANTASTIC! AND THAT ENGINE LOOKS AND SOUNDS MINT!!!!!!
Nice to see the Art of fingering is not lost.
In seriousness one of my favourite engines to work on.
Fantastic to see her on the road in this video. I’m loving your project so much, thanks for posting 👍
Lovely !

well done, gents!
beautiful countryside!
Good to see the Jag out on the road.
Great achievement lads 👍
These cars I found are great to drive, they are comfortable and really get down the road we'll and will keep up with modern traffic

OHC no pushrods.
Spot on lads 👍
Great job! Hopefully the overheating is just the thermostat or the radiator and not the waterways in the block.

brilliant work lads, can't wait to see the next vid! Cheers 🍻
Good video guys, well done.
Well done lads, great to see father and son working so well together. I am not so lucky, 😢
At some point the lock pin has been hammered with a screw driver. Tool would push it back allowing rotation but it’s been damaged by screwdriver and hammer. Nice project.
Yes it seems that someone had been in before and had difficulties…..
Thanks guys the car sounds great . Some more work to do but its in good hands All the best.
That cooling fan is still back to front! 🙂
I was thinking the same.
That would explain the temperature being high….
They only have to put a piece of newspaper behind the rad if it sticks to the rad when running that should tell them the fans on wrong. Just wondering if they know there are winter and summer stats for these old motors.
Fitted backwards it will still move air backwards, just much less well than if it were the right way round.
What a nice job you have been done.greatings from Norway :)
Great video, with any luck once the gears and that rattles dealt with should be able to get the rear end sideways foot flat down on the accelerator in order to reinact a episode from the sweeney.
I remember polishing the cam covers on a xk 120 with my dad, be about 1973.
Well chuffed with that run up😎👌🏽a few glitches to sort but it’ll get sorted…. Nice one lads👍🏼
Awesome job lads the jag sounds lovely, hope you find the issue keep her chapping 👍

The "clunk" noise
might be the gearbox mount ,
from memory its a
biggish spring that is part of the mount which fails, that
possibly could be
the problem.?
👍👍👍...,👌
When dad says push it harder, you push it harder son! No guts no glory 😂😂😂😂
Excellent stuff very entertaining 👌👍🏻👏

CRACK ON MATES Cheers from CALGARY
Cracking channel and love the jag.
The worst enemy of the XK engine was corrosion of the cyl head waterways . They corroded if coolant wasnt kept fresh. New coolants should prevent that if their are ok
Late changes could just be low fluid, there's a sprung gearbox mount also that could be the noise.
What a great result & all thanks to your hard graft, impressively clean under the rocker covers
For extra precision finding top dead centre use a dial test indicator from a lathe on a magnetic arm and get a super precise tdc
That knock from underneath is probably the transmission bushing.
The exhausts are very bad for rattles on jags.they have close clearances in areas and any looseness causes them to catch and knock and rattle.great to see it on the road tho.looking good.
Did well say been layed up I'd swap gearbox oil and filter
💙👊😎💙👊😎
The bar is open classic.
👍👍

Fan is back to front
They should definitely check that. Good call.
The kick down cable is too taught - just loosen it off a tad.
I would have expected to see more oil inside the cam covers and oil flow when cranking the engine over.
Check transmission fluid level
😍😍😍😍
Rad could be blocked as its been stood so long, take it off and put some caustic soda in it, or have it re cored, hope it's not head gasket, tbh most jags I've owned have had failed HG, last one on an e type, I was putting a kettle full in every day.
So I'm presuming that when you "removed" those cam covers (inlet side and exhaust side), the fact that they are indeed "clean" indicates that "the valve oil seals" are good, Yes ??
The viscous coupling didnt look up to much? It should only spin about 1-1/2 turns when not running.
whats happening with the mk1 mini project.?...its been left on the back burner for a fair while now lads...
Can,t see any oil inside cam covers?
Hi, do you know the colour code for this car, is it British Racing Green? Different number plate on front and back?
You will need to sort them gears before you can use it as a getaway car
what about the min
That chain is to tight
Sallei 500 bluettre
You shouldn't turn the engine anticlockwise, why are the number plates different front and back?
I'm sure there's an honest answer to that but would be a bit awkward trying to explain to Police if they got pulled. I don't know how sympathetic they are to test-drives in old cars
