They don't make cars like this anymore. Cars that have soul and character. Amazingly beautiful Jag.
ikr. They all try too hard to look "futuristic" that is hard to tell what is what at first glimpse even for car nerds. I don't care about aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, or safety crap on expense of style.
Right, the xjs is one of my dream cars but nobody likes them here, they don’t realize that the jaguars of this time had so much personality.
@@bdulrahmanarzani27 All the better. They'll go for cheap (ish) money, and not catch the eye of too many car guys
@@likedcascade6625 you are correct, you ride deep for cheap, lol, but the prices on the older xj6's are going up up up, the xjs's are somewhat reasonable but not for long.
@@toddwilson4297 I'd have a Mark X or 70's-80's xj6.
It's not always about all-out speed. Chris's XJ is a particularly stunning example of the joy of simply taking the long way home and taking advantage of a long, open road.
Very cool owner, restrained, didn't interrupt, waiting for Jay's comments, a joy to listen to, bringing out the best in Jay. I love the motion trick lighting at 3:59
hey the car speaks for him
True, but even cooler is his family's history!!!
One of the most beautiful cars ever made, to me.
One of the most beautiful cars ever made.
Exactly what I think.
I wonder if Lyons was still alive when this was designed. If so, he would have liked it.
@@ghw7192 He was. He died in 1985. He's last approved Jag was the XJ40.
@@jsz2619 Thank you! An uncle would let me drive his right hand drive XK120 and I have loved these beauties ever since.
Agreed!
I had a 1978 V12 coupe one kid the greatest cars I ever owned. That car would cruise at 110 mph cruising across France. Smoothest, quietest car on the road then.
i enjoy how the owner wasn't trying to sell something the entire video. nice for a change
This boy’s dad should be proud. He is very unspoiled and a young gentleman. Great car.
More unmodified old cars please!
yes!
Agreed!
Does Jay like those, not sure he's ever said if he has...
So much more interesting than a restomod or overrestored SEMA disaster.
Toby Corbin what's so bad about a tastefully done restomod ? especially a period correct looking one
You're free to not watch videos that some of us DO enjoy
RyTrapp0 my question has very little to do with the video and more to do of a " build style " expressionally sense I owned one
To be fair, part of the reason this channel is so awesome is due to Jay featuring a huge diversity of cars and motorcycles
Scott Fugere and that's why I Watch the video to see jays opinions of the jag because I like 🇬🇧 automobiles but after driving the 4 door Version of this I was disappointed and I was wondering if I was being fair to it judgment wise
Worked in a garage whilst still at school where the owner spcialized in Jags of this era (70's & 80's). Beautiful, graceful cars.
it was such a shame that the build quality was not at the same standard as the design . . . i had one too. it was a lovely car, but disastrous for repairs . . . .
Mr. Leno that's one beautiful Jag you got there Sir. And with the most stunning colour the British Racing Green .
What a great classic cruiser and a great find! Jaguar seems to have a knack of creating something so stylish that it often looks better the older it gets. So glad that it's been kept to as close as original as you can get...
So true. When I was young and finally got my xk-e, I adored the 3.8S, and mk2, but was appalled at the mkX. Now years later I own a black/black mkX and love the style and gracious burl wood interior. It has grown on me over the years.
I cant agree with Jay in comparing it to American cars of the same era. the engineering is on another level from rack and pinion steering, independent suspension with coils ( not leaf springs) four wheel disc brakes inboard at rear with anti dive, twin overhead cam engine, optional manual 4 speed with overdrive and then the safety....
i agree. a similar age original American just wouldn't keep up in the twisties, or stop at the end of the straight......
Margo Newman all true. If only they had contracted the electrical stuff to the Japanese
@@nickbouvy6524 to true it and beside the electrics the cooling system on the old euro cars wasn't the best
Remembering, of course, the manual was never offered on the XJ6 in the US.
@@mescko I always wondered why they bothered to make a manual, seems somewhat pointless when it sits below the V12 in terms of sportiness.
You can sure tell that Jay loved driving this one, just keeps going and going...looks more relaxed than after a ride in a RR.
That audio gear he has should be exceptional when it gets hooked up too. What an excellent guest Chris was, with some incredible stories.
Love the Cat! As an owner of 2 Jags, one a 1996 Celebration model XJS 2+2 roadster and my Pride and Joy, a very rare JCNA National Award Winner 1990 VDP Majestic, original, unrestored, one of only 526 identical Jaguar saloons produced only for the US market. Both have essentially the same, but updated 6 cylinder DOHC engine as the '75 XJ6C, and are a blast to drive and show. Multiple Best in Show awards for the Majestic and have run out of room for the trophies. Thanks Jay for the great video.
I had an 88 VDP and loved it. If I remember correctly it was one of the last true Jaguar-made cars before Ford really got involved. That 6 cylinder was the smoothest engine ever. On the highway, there was nothing better. Black with the fawn interior. I don't think fawn is what they called it but it was very very beautiful. I drove that car over 220k miles and wish I'd kept it.
I still can't believe this is a RUclips channel... the production values here are just amazing. RUclips themselves need to promote stuff like this more, and not just the latest garbage personalities all the kids are into. Just look at how much of a pulling force something like The Grand Tour have. This could be the RUclips equivalent to that.
EDIT: lol of course this particular episode have a bunch of issues, but hey, my point still stand.
+
This is great, not just because of the production values, but because of Jay Leno and his love for cars. That you cannot fake.
Well... It isn't really a youtube channel production... These are extracts from his tv show...
Its made by NBC.
Phil Buglass These aren't from his TV show
That's about as beautiful as a car can be
Totally agree. Mercedes is my heart, but Jaguar has my eyes.
My uncle bought a brand new XJ12 Sovereign in 1984. Man that thing was gorgeous and was like driving on a cloud.
The XJ6 and XKE Were lovely automobiles. The new Jags are nice but lack the elegance of the old ones.
I'm not really a fan of Jaguar after the 2009 XJ8, when they lost their classic style and the leaping Jag logo.
The xjs?
Everything from Ford onwards aren't really Jags. The XK and F-Type are good but their saloons now are just Mercedes/BMW/Audi etc wannabes
I love these classic Jaguars! The newer Jaguars are nice, but the classics just has a certain character to them.
Easier to maintain too. Not computerised, just mechanical. I first had an '83 XJ6 (bought in the 1990s), was cheap, timing chain rattled, but it drove fine. Then an '83 XJ12, the legendarily smooth engine (but thirsty). Then a late '70s XJ. Finally a post-facelift XJS. All beautiful cars, all reliable, exceot for the XJS. You will never regret buying a '70s or mid '80s Jag. Incredibly enjoyable cars to drive and just be in. Pure therapy. 'A poor man's Rolls Royce', but I prefer them to Rollers.
We need more people like Jay and Chris. Preserving and appreciating for what they were at the time. Thanks for sharing
A neighbor up the street had a 5.3 V12 Daimler with yellow paint. I used to walk by it every day on the way to school. This is a substantially big car by any standards yet the proportions & stance are a refined masterpiece of design.
This is the second time I've seen this video, I just love the lines, color and details of this Jag.
What an elegant car!
This is the car that made be fall in love with Jags. I remember where an when I first set eyes on it as a kid.
I'm so happy to see this. I own the V12 version in Signal Red!
Would that be a 5.3liter Daimler ? Loads of spark plugs and valves all in a row.
Lucky man
I had a V12, but the sedan, a 1974 XJ12L. Last year of the carburetted engines, with four Strombergs. The crossflow intake manifold alone deserved to be in an art gallery. I always that at around 95 to 100 mph on the freeway, that marvelous engine sounded like a jet aircraft turbine winding up for takeoff with that smug 12 cylinder high-pitched whine.
@@joycemiller4716 It's rarely about luck
I loved my XJ6, 1979 4 door! maintained it myself for 16 years before I let it go with 126K miles on it. It also looked like it came off the show room floor. Wife only drove it 1 to 2 miles a day. drove back to Main and NY many times with the kids and toured the US in it. Same color as this coup but had luggage rack on its back truck hood.
Wonderful to see this appreciation of the XJC. Sir William Lyons is responsible for the classic lines of this car, and that of many others including the progenitor XK 120 Fixed Head Coupe. The XJC corrects the ergonomic problems of the earlier FHC models while preserving the purity of line and overall balance of the composition. Our family owned many Jaguar automobiles over a period of 50 years, and were able to thoroughly experience the different models and the evolution thereof. The twin fuel tank scheme dates back to the 1950 Mark 7 Saloon. One tank was known to have been used to smuggle contraband back in the day. All XJC models imported to the USA came with a black vinyl top as was the fashion of the time. To my eye the car looks much better without it. We owned a 1976 XJC, and I had the pleasure of also extensively testing the V12 version. Both were notably smooth in operation. The 6 cylinder car preferred to stay below 4500 RPM and had impressive low end torque. It wouldn’t light the tires, but was a satisfying gentleman’s express. The V12 was smoother yet, pulled strongly from any speed, but revved eagerly to 6500 rpm in stock form. Modified engines can see 8000-8500 rpm. US versions of both motors were restricted considerably from UK spec. The biggest difference with competing US cars was the sophisticated chassis. The XJ chassis was a modern European design on par with Mercedes Benz. Fully independent suspension, anti roll bars, twin rear shocks, 4 wheel disc brakes, speed rated radial tires and more were not to be found on American cars. Jay mentioned the Cadillac as competition. The 1975 Cadillac had a huge 8.2 liter/ 500 cubic inch motor but only made 210 horsepower, and was fitted to a much heavier car. I tested ( and drag raced! ) the Caddy against the 6 cylinder XJC. The Jaguar was considerably quicker, and much faster on top. The V12 cars would go 140 mph.
Another nice entry in the series! I like the episodes with the oddball cars and older vehicles best. Yeah, the high horsepower new cars are nice, but nothing beats the sight of a beautiful old car, well maintained or brought back to life. The older cars (looking at you 1936 120B) seem to possess a simplicity and an elegance that a Koenigsegg just cant match. After volunteering at the Packard Museum a while back, I gotta say that I wish Mr. Leno would show off more really early automobiles.
JAAAAG
GTR Wendy lol you bet me to it
mataiterapreha its ok because he's got a JAAAG
I wonder if he took anything from Jay's shop xD
STAAAAG
GTR Wendy Wendy you are everywhere.. I thought I was crazy about cars.. cheers!
My dad had one in the same colour and trim. Seeing this brought back many wonderful memories. A beautiful car in so many ways. Thanks for sharing Jay
First memories of my grandad driving, were in his series 2 XJ6 saloon.
In later years, he told me many tales of him driving that car all over Europe on business trips.
As a teenager, I used to go ten-pin bowling every Sunday, with my best friend and his dad, who had a series 3 (my favorite), followed by the square headlamped Daimler variant XJ40, with very rare manual gearbox.
Always wanted an XJ and have finally bought myself a 3.0 V6 2003 XJ6, the X350 shape and absolutely love it.
You have very good taste in cars.
It's all because he has a JAAAAAG!
Otaku Retrogamer I see what you did there.
A beautiful car. That Jag looks great going down the road. Classic elegance ... British Racing Green. Great to see another young enthusiast.
I remember having to change out an A/C evaporator in a couple of XJ's... Bring your camping gear, and a week's worth of food !
You just know the sound pops are coming from the Jag electrics! Love this car and this video. Thank you.
FINALLY, FINALLY FINALLY!!! An original car, not a piece of crap restomod/hot rod/modified crap car, simply a car essentially as they came from the dealer. These cars are truly missed and missing in this channel.
Exactly! For a guy who professes to like "original and unrestored" Jay has been showing a lot of boy-racer rubbish recently.
Problem is most cars of this period are affected by rust and need work on almost everything and with spares difficult to get, hard to find an original car unless owner has unlimited budget and car is collectible and not hardly driven
Had 4 of them. An 86 VDP; a 92 xj6, a 97 British racing green XJR ; and now an '04 XJ8. Let me tell you, these are great cruisers. Not a car that you want to race BMWs with, just a great , relax and enjoy the drive car. I love mine. I feel like I am in a Bentley or Rolls ... Been in those cars too, so don't get it twisted these cars are well worth the money.
My father, God rest him, purchased a Silver 1973 Jaguar XJ-6 Sedan. Although it was a gorgeous car with a stunning interior and wonderful ride, mechanically it was a nightmare! It was constantly in the shop until the engine block finally cracked and my father traded it in on a 1976 Cadillac Seville. I remember sitting in the back as a kid and would always notice people staring at us when they drove by. After the Seville, we talked him into buying an Audi 5000. He loved that car as much as the Jag, but no headaches!
JAGS WITH SMALL BLOCK CHEVYS ARE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN .
I always hear Paul McCartney and Wings when I see cars from 1975. I'd love to relive that time.
Fancy seeing you here!
Smooth body lines and British Class. Kinda makes me miss my old 74' TR6. Thanks Jay, good one.
Jay, Thanks for going back to class and beauty with this one!
What a gorgeous car, thanks for showing it to us!
I've never seen a coupe version of this, always 4 door sedans, so glad you put this on.
I've not long sold my one & my wife still misses it. They are very satisfying to own. You get a lot of people doing a double-take when they realise it's a coupe :-)
The first time I saw one of these it was a jaw dropping moment. Such styling, and execution!
Just makes sense seeing the joy of motoring, cruising in a classic, enjoying like minded company.Terrific.
Sweet, sweet show! Been driving my BRG/Biscuit XJ for 25 years. Finally, some love; thank you so much, Jay!! And the XK engine powered Jags to 5 (five) LeMans victories through the 1950's, not once 'in the late 60's'. The most undervalued car I've ever known. Stranded once in all these years (with a flat tire) and had to call a tow -- because the lug wrench was home in my garage.. Not kidding. Just a little TLC and they run forever. Find a nice one and keep it!!
I love how Jay sticks his arm out of every vehicle he drives, a true hot rodder
The most beautiful saloon car ever penned.
I read somewhere that a lot of people that love cars always remembered where they were the day they saw their first XJ6 , it was so radical for its day so with standout good looks like the E Type and had the extra wide tires , still a gorgeous design today , the trouble is like the E type it was very difficult to improve with the next model .
My Mother and Father worked next door to the Jag factory in Coventry in the late 50's. She says she will never forget the first E type they rolled out the back of the factory...the whole office ran out to see it.
A beautiful example! And reminds me of when I had a 1978 Jaguar XJ6 4.2L in British Racing Green. So many memories in that car and lots of photos of it too.
Beautiful car, excellent color combination. Fun segment.
I had one in blue, but sometimes, depending on the light conditions it looked a lovely green colour. It really did turn heads.
omg can you hear the clicks and clunks every time he opens or closes something ,, like an angel singing in my ear
Very stylish car. I remember they did one on Wheeler Dealers a few years ago.
Great video Jay Leno
Jay, you need a lavalier mic. The sound in the test drives is much better than in the garage.
WiseGuy02+ What is the major malfunction with the audio on JLG? This is a chronic problem, and from the sound on this vid, it seems like all the gain is getting lost, not that the sound itself is bad. Idk enough about it, but come on Jay, we love your videos, but AUDIO! - OH MY, MY, MY!
THANK YOU, I thought I was the only one! I only need my TV volume at 15 for every other video on youtube. For this video I'm I'm up to almost 40. Please fix it for the love of god. Put the mic closer of make some sort of adjustment.
ONe of the best guests, ever. This dude is chill, and takes care of his machine.
My favorite type of videos from Jay.. Thanks!
Fell in love with this car watching The Equalizer, very pretty.
Good looking car and cool guest owner.
richb313 yeah. He seems like a nice guy.
beautiful jag in the right color love it
That.....is bloody GORGEOUS!!!
Perfect example of British panache styling. Not too showy, but certainly a unique style.
That is a nice car!
If it wasn't for that sound issue, this would be one of the best videos you've ever made. Love the longer drive! I've never wanted a Jag before... I do now.
Thank you very much for a most enjoyable ride and conversation!
One of the most interesting interviews i have seen on JLG. The XJ6 is just a Beautiful car! Fantastic!!
Finally, Jay! An old car.
Leave the modern ones for those quintillion YT channels.
Owned one of these in the 90s. It turned heads.Pulled into a filling station in Hamburg and put diesel in the left hand side tank.No problem,I put petrol in the other tank and switched over.Drained the diesel out next the next day via a plug at bottom of the tank.
That body style is timeless. The motor is so smooth, and it was quiet.I've loved the 4-door version, and never saw the 2-door.Wow ! Great buy.I hope you and your family enjoy it through generations too.

Have you seen the latest episode of grand tour, its all about the Jaaaag , really funny!
I'm sorry old bean, would you excuse me for a moment, I must just go warm up the Jaaaaaaag!
I'm terribly sorry,I've ran over your dog............ in my Jaaaagggggg!!!
I really want an older jaguar 6 cylinder, this thing is gorgeous
Love the classics, can't get enough. Especially Euro. Thanks Jay!
Still one of the finest Jaguars ever made. This one is an exceptional example even comparing it to what we have available here in the UK. Great episode Jay. thanks. And congatulations to Christopher on a wonderful car.
Love these! Got my first speeding ticket at 100+ in my dad's XJ 12, with him asleep in the passenger seat! I think it was a big mistake by Jag eliminating the beautiful row of rocker switches on the dash.
Beautiful automobile. Hope he enjoys it for many years.
One of the best episodes...Thanks!
XJ6/12s 'Shrink around you' - spot on Jay - that's why I love them - I have had several including the Daimler Double Six v12
Good choice Chris, well done.
Interesting fellow who was not there to promote himself, and seemed comfortable with the camera, like it wasn't there. Excellent car too. I'm sure he liked Mr Leno's approval of his ride.
Going back to when the series 2 came out a friend was chairman of the Jaguar Drivers club UK he had one of the first of these. A beautiful car comfortable. Very collectable. Worth having in your Collection if you haven't
This is perhaps the best of the series, I looked at a 12 cylinder version back in the early’80s but the owner changed his mind, so never owned it. I bought the xj40 in ‘90 and changed the headlights out for the round ones. Just recently a friend decided to part with his one owner ‘84 series III with 45k miles in excellent condition, so I bought it. I related to what was said about all the bulbs, generally having a blast with it. When Tata took it over I feel it lost its soul, I’ve never cared for the new direction the car is going now. Thanks for sharing, what an exceptional motorcar!
I had the 12 cyl, 5.3C version. Great car, except I used to get confused between the speedo and the fuel gauge...
Weren't they going in opposite directions at almost the same rate?!
I drove an XJ when I worked at an auction company. Smooth as silk, and I loved the 'snick' of the automatic shifter. It is the ultimate sedan IMO, at least in form.
Well, the XJ6 Coupe is not a SEDAN (Wikipedia: A sedan [...] is a passenger car in a three-box configuration with A, B & C-pillars...).
PỺO's MƎᴻTɐʟ MƎʟTdowɴs
I never actually knew the distinction between until now :)
In fairness if you wanted to I suppose you could also call this Jag a two door hardtop, doesn't quite roll off the tongue like coupe does though :P
Was that a company car?
PỺO's MƎᴻTɐʟ MƎʟTdowɴs back in the day sedan meant 4 passenger car. Not 4 door. Meanings change.
PỺO's MƎᴻTɐʟ MƎʟTdowɴs he drove a xj Not a xj Coupe.
Absolutely beautiful from any angle. Great car and video
what a beautiful automobile! thanks for sharing it!
love this channel and this video.
I wish you could put a compressor on the audio and boost the levels of the dialogue in post. I have to crank my speakers to full and its still hard to hear. Also you are shooting with a flat color profile on your cameras which is great, but that means you are supposed to add the contrast back in in post production so your footage will really look amazing.
Thanks Jay, keep up the good work!
I live in Erie PA, cant believe he found that car here in that good of shape!
Will Hewitt
I live in Erie too and fully agree!
Mustn't have ever got wet.
As a student, I worked for British Leyland for three summers and a full year after graduating from law school in the mid-1970's. We had very few XJC's come through but I still remember a special ordered Black (exterior) and Gold (interior) one we had...beautiful car. I also got to see all the pre-production cars (XJS, Rover 3500, Austin Princess, etc.) when they came through for winter testing before they ever went on sale (or didn't). Great employer, a great place to work especially as a student.
A beautiful and rare Jaguar. Wonderful ride and style. Currently doing a project 1975 XJC V12 manual box. Euro look etc. Can't wait!!
This and the E-type are two of the best looking cars in history.
I would take this over an E-type any day. An E-type coupe looks like a giant penis to me.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH Yes they do, they are supposed to appeal to your subconscious giving you a sense pf sexual superiority, that's why they subconsciously look like a phallic symbol. !!!!!
Harry's garage did a review of the XJ 5.3CV12 Coupe, his Car amazing too!
Wow, what a motor. So glad that there are people willing to preserve these. You occasionally see these in the summer driving around the UK but not often. Ive got to say that this model has got to be my favourite. Prefer the V12 though but still, what an amazing car.
I love that British Racing Green Color on that Jaguar !!! it's Gourgous !!!
More jags!!!!!
That a fine looking car ! As I watched this video though, it just seemed like something was missing. Towards the end I realized that Jay didn’t have his left hand turn signal on ...... 🤣
I had one of these, which was a Daimler Sovereign version that had the 'Avon Stevens'' rag top conversion.
Although the top was not powered, it was surpassingly easy to put the top up or down.
I'm on my 2nd Jag, a 2009 XF Supercharged. What a fantastic ride
Now Jay do the XJ-S video, XJ-S Styling is so timeless and cool for the time it was designed
