Let’s take a closer look at the roller axis
As you can see it has a stepper motor that is attached to some gears and then those gears turn the rollers. It is important to not the roller diameter as you will need this for calculating your rotary axis settings later.
The way this works is, you place your object on the rollers and the rotary turns the piece for the y axis. The roller axis is limited by the diameter that can safely be rotated without falling off and not too small that it get jammed in the wheels. So long as it can fit under your laser head and still be able to be set to the focus height - more on this later. Let’s look at the software settings required. I’ll use RD works briefly now to show where to find the required settings and then switch over to the software I use which is LightBurn.
In Episode 2 I demonstrated how to backup Vendor and User Settings - You can see that section of the video by clicking the link in the description below so I won’t cover that part again - • Ep. 2 - LASER ROTARY A...
Now to work out the Steps Per Rotation (aka Circle Pulse)
Use this formula
Gear Ratio x Diameter Ratio x Pulse/Rev = Circle Pulse
Remember You Will Need to Disable Y-Axis Reset Before Connecting Your Rotary Attachment (as described in the previous 2 episodes of the Rotary Axis)
After you have disabled the Y Axis reset, Go to the RH Side Panel in RDWorks and select the USER Settings TAB
In The USER TAB - OTHER
Scroll down to Rotating
Select Enable Rotary - YES
Enter the Circle Pulse you calculated & The Diameter of the Object
The Circumference is now the Max Height of the Y Axis
I show two methods for setting the Circle pulse/steps per rotation. The 1st is the method described in the RD Works User Manual.
This provides an accurate and precise movement of the y axis when using the rotary.
The 2nd method of using the roller axis is to leave the settings of the circle pulse and diameter to the values of the wheel diameter only and then only use the circumference of the work piece to determine the height of the Y axis. This method does work (however is not as accurate) and it appears that this is the method that is expected to be used in the Rotary setup of Lightburn software, however by following the instructions given you can use both methods in both RD Works and Lightburn.

The best video ever to calibrate rotary. Precise for every diameter object, well done sir.
great video. thanks. Before watching this we had bad luck today. Wouldn't dial in the way my friend was showing me, the rotary even was really hot. Monport 80watt co2 with the same type B rotary you're showing. Hopefully after watching this I can get things set up.
What ever I did to my old machine I could not get this to work. I just changed the pulses in vendor settings and all operational, all i can put it down to is the old stepper drivers are probably 20 years old and they're not talking to RDworks old CW260's running fractioned microsteps. Will have to have a chat with Matt when i make it out to one of his workshops. Cheers Ryan
Fantastic Video. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
Thanks!
Awesome info!
thanks
good
Thanks
Hi, I was wondering what diameter do you use when you need to engrave a vase shaped object. Do you use the diameter where you want to engrave or the diameter of the vase shaped object touching the rotary tool driving wheels?
This could be done by measuring where it contacts the drive wheels
Thank you so much for putting this together. I have struggled the last few months through various posts and videos and none of them described so clearly what you have here nor provided the proof that it worked. Or maybe I just wasn't getting it. In any case, thank you very much. I will be trying this out in the very near future. Would you be able to share the spreadsheet you set up for the recalculations?

The 80W Red and Black i ordered comes with DM545A Drivers, will that unit work the same with the drivers i have?
Yes, Select the 2-Phase Step Motor option when purchasing.

Cheers Matt
i have a 2 phase roller just like the one in your video but i need a 3 phase for my new laser. can i change it to a 3 phase. if yes what motor do i need to get. Thanks P.S. Your videos are very helpful
You can replace with a 3 phase motor with the same mounting and shaft length as your current 2 phase one. If you need assistance selecting motor email me matt@mwlaser.com.au Cheers
@@MWLaser Thanks for your help
Question I don't have "other" under my user menu. Where else would it be? I'm using RDWorkds. Thanks
what version of RD Works are you using?
You can update to V8.01.48 here mwlaser.com.au/sdm_downloads/rd-works-v8-01-48/
An outstanding video and very helpful. I've been under utilizing my laser for years and now am confident enough to move forward. Great job. Question however... I'm running a Chinese Red/Black. The stepper drivers are not labeled. How can I tell which one is for which axis? Liked / Subbed
Thank you. If you cannot trace wires to the motor, the easiest way to know which driver is X & Y, is to remove the connection plugs from one driver, then power on machine and see which axis does not move.
@@MWLaser SMH… I don’t know why I couldn’t think of that. I must be tired.. 😂 Thank you.
@@_Vinyl-zs8fe No prob. Cheers
hi Matt love your videos i have gained a lot can you send my a diagram of the ruida rdc 6445s wirring diagram for the rotary axis please
you will find this in the user manual for your controller
Super Video, Funktioniert bei mir leider nicht.
thanks
