I’m a brotha that fucks with rap obviously. I fell in love with metal & rock because of this channel. Love you guys, keep up the good vids
liver666 got that metalocylpse avatar too! You went deep! :)
Check out Bad Brains.

Before I really ever listened to metal and rock, I primarily listened to rap. I grew listening to Tupac, NWA, Dr Dre, Ice Cube and the like. After they kinda stepped away from the spotlight, rap just wasn’t as good to me. Themes changed and it was less about life and more so about things I couldn’t relate to like money and drugs. Then a friend of mine, who was a big metalhead, recommend some bands for me and it was like I was in love with music again. I still listen to rap today, but rock/metal made me want to learn an instrument and I could finally relate to music again.
Man after hearing Neil passed away I came straight here just to watch the joy in your faces his drumming brought to everyone, damn I feel a part of my childhood just died :(
welldoh smith it didn’t buddy. Luckily we have so much of him left for eternity! Stay up
That's a Kinks lyric.
Likewise... had to come back and watch these guys enjoy this song with me! Happy to find your comment too. RIP Neil, thanks for the music.
Same here, sad day.
I've been looking up reaction videos just to see the love for him from others. So surprised at the small amount. Of reaction vids
RIP Neal Peart. One of the greatest drummers of all-time.
Correction, not ONE of the best, he is...THE BEST DUMMER OF ALL TIME.
@@coryconrad1872 you keep telling yourself that
Still grieving for Neil’s friends and family. Alex and Geddy, i really hope motivation will be back soon.
No, the greatest!! He was on a completely different level
@Nate ever heard him play the buddy rich memorial concert? He does not get the concept of syncopation, and it sounded so far from jazz it was almost comical. Yes, he is a brilliant drummer, but he lacks versatility. I personally cannot get any thrill from his drumming, as it has no feel when it all sounds the same. This is coming from a grade 8 drummer fyi.
Let it be known now that RUSH is the only band who's label actively supported this channel and community with something to give us the fans of their music. That's the TRUE SIGN that they practiced what they preached. RIP Neil Peart. Thank you Geddy and Alex and their label for staying true to your fans until the day this ride came to an end. Glittering prizes and endless compromises indeed can shatter the illusion of integrity but no one will EVER, I MEAN EVER question the integrity of RUSH.
Rush has been the definition of integrity since they began. We knew it as kids in the 70's and watched it grow over the years.
I've been a loyal fan since day one. They were the greatest music & life ( cuz of the lyrics) teachers I ever had. Not just Geddy cuz I'm a bassist but ALL THREE ( THATS the mind fk 3 guys 1 big sound) the only band in my life that made me RUN home from school & grab my bass. Their influence made my life better, ive become quite the bassist & respected musician but a better man & human being. I can never repay the debt of gratitude I owe them & they don't even know I exist. Wow that's so heavy man.
Rush loves their fans. I've met both Geddy and Alex twice and they're incredibly nice.
Here here!!
I have been there from their early days. Every time they dropped, FM, vinyl, 8track, cassette, CD I was waiting with my cash. Many times during my service in the 82nd Airborne I used Rush to bring me up and Floyd to calm me down.
Long live rock and roll!
Neal Peart plays drums like a six-armed alien from Planet Fuckyeah.
Also side note HOW THE HELL HAVE YOU NOT SEEN STAR WARS
Planet Fuckyeah!!! 🤣🤣🤣
planet fuckyea!!! the... fuckit you win the internet
John McLellan too funny man 😆
He's pretty incredible, but I do think his 30+ piece kits are annoyingly pretentious. I've seen him go an entire show without using half of it.

I sincerely thank you for introducing me to Rush.
Had never heard of these guys before, and now, can't stop hearing them.
If you like songs with groove
This RUSH song kicks ass.

Drake Parker, you gotta get the masterpiece; 2112. Every song on there is iconic. Lifechanger.

I have been listening to RUSH for 30+ years and I never get tired or it, in fact the more I listen the better it gets.
“One likes to believe in the freedom of music but glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity”
Love that line
That...was fantastic. I’m crying. Watching these two guys feel it, like we all felt it 40+ years ago...brings every feeling, fascination, and emotion right back.
Like you are...validating our entire history.
Beautiful.
Happily shrieked at a pitch higher than I thought possible when I got this notification.
Jordan Moss higher tnat geddy's voice
Higher than a schoolgirl at a Bieber concert.
Trivium- the sin and the sentence
What is so very cool about these videos is that I get so many new bands and songs to check out just from the suggestions posted here. Thanks!
If you're digging Rush check out 'Xanadu'
RIP Neil Peart. The Professor. This one really hurts 😢
Yes, yes it does.
My heart ❤ bleeds...🤘🏿🐾
I lost it when I heard. I am stunned and dismayed.
Everyone freaks out when the Reggae drops
The seemlessness that it is fitted into the other genre is something that pretty much nobody has ever heard before. Truly special.
I absolutely adore "Signals" and "Grace Under Pressure" for that very reason. They could've dropped a full-reggae album as far as I'm concerned.
those changes represent flipping through songs on the radio dial.
@@rickytremblay I've never thought about that!
It reminds me of the honky tonk bit in the middle of Dream Theater's Dance of Eternity. Then again I think Dream Theater draws a lot of inspiration from Rush!
Yes. Man, I tell ya. If you do 2112 you will never be the same. ;)
The drummer also writes the lyrics. He's called the professor because he's so smart. He's read many many books. Was a nerd. List his wife to cancer, and then his daughter to a car wreck. It was thought he wasn't going to rejoin the band for awhile, but he did. He took a motor cycle and travelled all over Canada, The US and Central and South America. He made it as far as Columbia I believe it was.
Another interesting note. When playing live, the bass pkayer also plays the keyboards. There are only 3 people in the band, so many times the bass olayer is singing, playing keyboards, bass, and a foot controlled bass. Amazingly talented bunch of guys. Just Amazing.
Tim Smallwood I was also going to mention Neil is the drummer and lyricist. Then saw your comment!
He also wrote the book Ghost Rider about his experience.
2112 is a must listen.
drummer Peart has written several books, in fact
Tim Smallwood I hated Rush growing up because I couldn’t get past his voice. As I’ve gotten older, I love them. I genuinely believe that they are a band that can play over your head considering every reason I have heard to dislike them. As you learn to listen to a song as a whole, you can appreciate almost anything with any degree of heart. I missed out because I paid to much attention to only the vocals and didn’t realize that every member of this band gives each other depth which makes the vocals awesome as well as everything else. I do maintain that this is one of the most underrated guitar players along with David Gilmore.
not only are they all three technically perfect musicians..
theyr lyrics are intellectually witty.with a POSITIVE message..
three benefits to humanity.
A lot of themes about Freedom. To me RUSH symbolizes freedom above anything :)
Yet Geddy Lee's vocals ruin it all.. sad.
@@adamjohnson4624 you're wrong
walnutlogger 43 - Yep. Ayn Rand inspired and anti socialist messages. Wish Rush would get popular with the millennials.
You said it, “universal appeal.” This band transcends all borders and boundaries. I like you guys. I’ll keep watching
except for Women XD
At 56 I can't tell you how much I love to see you guys react to to music of my youth. The reaction you have brings it all back to me.
It's like it's the first time. It sends your mind reeling while at the same time anchoring you to reality.
Michel Hammack Nicely stated!
I feel you brother, 54 here and grew up listening to this great band. RIP. Neil Peart , damn this one really hurts.
Same! 57. 2112 and fly by night and farewell to kings
These dude are digging the beats! And showed me to listen to new sounds in the background! THANK YOU!!!
Right there with you. Got my first taste of the band in 1979. Was hooked immediately and attended my first concert (period) in 1982 to see them. Nothing's changed since then and I love all of their music, all the way to "The Garden."
Yes! Neil Peart is widely regarded as THE greatest drummer of all time.
With music being so intensely subjective, there’s really no such thing as ‘a greatest’ musician or song, but NP definitely set a new standard with his drumming style, much like what Hendrix did with the guitar.
He's not regarded as, he IS The Greatest drummer there is.
In interviews he has stated that Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer that ever lived.
THE greatest in rock 'n' roll (although I prefer Ian Paice). Outside that there's Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, and many others who played for Zappa.
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 World class drummers no doubt. A league of their own.
Damn listening to the music is enjoyable by itself but hearing you two enjoying it at the same time just makes me laugh and smile the whole way through. Thanks for your channel, I really appreciate you guys.
Side note: Neil wrote most of the lyrics. Just saying
Rush was touring this lp and was the very first band to play at Joe Louis Arena. I will never forget that show ... during the reggae part when Geddy yells “Concert Hall” all the house lights came on until he dropped the next line “echoes ...”. It was so incredibly cool. Memory for a life time.
Rush is amazing by any standard, but when you think about the fact they're a 3 man band it's truly mind-blowing. I feel like you'll need to watch them play live to truly appreciate the talent of Rush. Actually watching Geddy Lee play bass with his left hand, keyboards with his right hand, and singing at the same time while Alex Lifeson alternates between necks on a 2 or 3 neck guitar, while Neil Peart goes ham on drums and percussion truly opens your eyes to their talent.
Just yesterday me and a fellow Rush fan were discussing Neil's use of the glockenspiel on Closer to the Heart.
I've seen the live three times. yes, they use pedals to play pre-recorded background music, but they don't rely on their control board operators. They are making all of the music themselves. Awesome band.
RUSH is timeless, I don't care what is wrong with this world, when I listen RUSH all things become right. Glad to see people appreciating what an incredible band they are. As a musician myself I have gone back and listened to them many times for inspiration. I enjoy watching Ryan and George discover music that is the soundtrack to my life, looks like the next generation appreciates great music. Thanks guys for doing these fun video's, they make me smile.
Guys - its a big deal - midway thru this song you acknowledge the talent the synergy the sound - this is something special - we all (rush fans) knew it - BUT to see someone come to that conclusion - at that moment - that's special! Welcome aboard George and Ryan - we know how your livin!
R.I.P. Neal Peart... You will be missed brother... Your music will live on..
My college math and animation teacher was obsessed with Rush. Add Rush references to class projects for extra points.
Red Barchetta.......a future where cars are Illegal. The melody and story are AWESOME!!!
Fella's please?
Please do this song. This is in my Top 3 Rush songs, and I'd love to hear the guys take on it
I want to echo this request.
Yup my favorite song also
Your appreciation for this is beyond words... Rush was my first concert in 1982....
You guys can hear it... Just like I "heard it"... Sending love from Texas
This song sparkles. Rush always had a sparkle in their music. Beautiful and unique.
btw, the drummer, neil peart, is also the one who writes the lyrics
Best drummer in the world HANDS DOWN. Period.
Neal Peart was special. He is sorely missed. Amazing song.
At 4:44 "Shout out to the F**in drummer!" He wrote the stories that shaped my life. RIP Neil Peart. You are missed. George, Ryan. Thank you to you guys too.
I am not sure why I soooo appreciate you guys revisiting my past loves that shaped who I am, but Bless you gentlemen...
mark it's because Ryan and George "get it"
I agree. Happened upon these guys a few weeks and and have watched so many of their video's now. I get goosebumps watching them react to songs I have loved for so many years. Just watching this video and seeing the Permanent Waves album cover in the background brings me back to being a teenager, laying on my bedroom floor and reading every piece of that album jacket while I played that album over and over and over again. Awesome content here. Just awesome.
Someone hearing rush for the first time almost brings a tear to my eye.
You guys do this reaction thing best, I like the way you comment and stop the vid...some guys just shake their heads, then say a few lines after with surprise on their faces...you guys are real! Thank you for bringing RUSH front and center! Plus the transitions are supposed to simulate changing radio stations. Spirit of The Radio 😊
you really do need to do a Rush tribute show/s with Neal Peart's passing this week. Rest In Peace Neal. Not only a huge influence on all drummers but an amazing lyricist as well.
Rush Week
"Hocus Pocus" by Focus (live version)!!! This one has it all: killer guitar riffs, laser beam solos, whiplash drumming, stanky bass lines, a singer with approx. 17 octave range, rock flute, whistling, and even yodeling! Guaranteed to make you smile!!!
papagriz33 seconded!
I personally prefer the remake by Helloween. It takes the original and just makes it more metal.
Death-Flesh and the Power it Holds!!!!
Yes yes yes!!
RIP Chuck

Ryan: "that's what we call 'stunting' ". It's comments like these that make Ryan and George the hugely popular peeps they are! Consistently stellar channel...and keeping me up ALL NIGHT LONG-DAMN YOU LOST IN VEGAS!
Eddie - Lead musician of VH. Slash - lead of GnR. Randy Rhoads of Ozzy & Quiet Riot. Alex, Geddy and Neil are all leads of Rush and present themselves as such constantly through every song. What a magically gifted group of friends. ~may your spirit live on in all of us~
If you're doing a giveaway you better keep those damn 2112 vinyls that's a fucking incredible album and that's something you should keep for yourselves
There was another vinyl set sent in the package and we are definitely keeping that one
Definitely give 2112 a listen before you get rid of it...Sure its a long track but hey, lifes about the journey, not the destination, right?
Lost In Vegas awesome, 2112 has a really great story, I would look up the story before listening so you can really understand it and understand why the atmosphere of the songs are the way they are
Justin Anderson I think they should give it a listen before looking it up, then look it up and give it a second listen.
Destrina yeah that's actually a good idea, that's how I heard it so maybe it'll hit them the way it hit me too, I just know they're busy with the videos and everything
Rush limelight is a great one, my favorite rush song
Jay same af
It’s probably been said , but I turned 59 two days ago . I get so much joy watching these cats groove to these songs of my youth . Music freaks and geeks , just like me . Till they lay me down .
First thing they pick up on is the drumming. And then they roll it back. The way it should be. RIP The Professor.
Lol you talk about the universal appeal of Rush. I remember back in the day, when my son was a toddler, I was driving the family somewhere in my god forsaken minivan, and my son was starting to become fussy. My wife put in a CD of some kids garbage music..the wiggles or some kind of crap. My kid just completely comes unglued. I too was wondering if I opened the door and jumped out at 70mph, that maybe it'd kill me quickly enough not to hear that garbage anymore. Finally I was done, I ejected that CD and tossed it somewhere in the van, and popped in my Rush CD. This song came on, before the lyrics started, my sun got quieter. Then the groove really got in, and he starts smiling and cooing. I looked at my wife and said 'now THAT's my son!!' lol never played that kid crap in the car again. haha. My son is 15 now, still loves Rush.
I really hope this is true
I wish I could give this more likes
My son's (10 y.o.) favorite band is Deep Purple, and tho they're not my favorite band, they are in my top 10. He's memorized the song tracks from Deepest Purple, and I couldn't be prouder.
Recently, he heard Helmet for the first time and FREAKED OUT. When he went on a school trip a few weeks ago, the adults asked for music request for the long drive, and my son told me he requested 'Unsung', which even the friggin' adults didn't know. They found it on their phones, and were stunned that a 10 y.o. boy knew a specific song from 1992 that so heavy and kicked SO MUCH ass.
THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!
Rob Cochrum when i was a little kid my dad would always play rush, and it amazed me during car rides.
Here in 🇨🇦, my 15 yr old son went into a music shop & asked to see their premium Taylor 12-string model (I have a Gibson 12 that’s got heavy action & his brother had an entry Taylor 6 with medium/light action). When the salesman asked if he knew what he was doing, my son just started “Closer to the Heart” & the salesman turned around to talk to other customers. No convincing needed ‘cause if you want to play high school rock here, Rush comes first.
Rush -Subdivisions. Let me tell you, that song speaks to me on such a deep level. Their lyrics in that song are so true. A great tune, honestly.
Kylea Michele ABSOLUTELY!
I wish I could find a girl into Rush.
Kylea Michele this is one of my favorite Rush tunes as well it reminds me of where I lived
The anthem for all square pegs.....like myself ✌
Kylea Michele
AGREED!....Subdivisions is definitely my favorite Rush track...If you haven't heard it vinyl...then...YOU HAVEN'T HEARD IT...just sayin
RIP Neal. I had to come back and re-watch this when I heard the news. Watching you guys react to hearing this song and Neal's mastery makes me appreciate his genius even more than I already did. Thank you.
R.I.P. Neil Peart....One of the greatest drummers ever !!
How awesome that they reached out to you guys. It just goes to show you how far your channel reaches. Keep up the great content Fellas.
john postlewait I have seen Rush four times in concert. They are FUCKING Awesome. I have been a fan since the first moment I heard them. You guys rock! !
Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here
RIP Neal Peart. This was the first video I wanted to watch when I heard the news today.
I'm so upset that Neil passed away. I always wanted to go and see them in concert and now I will never have the chance. Such an amazing drummer one of the greatest musicians that ever lived that is for sure!
RAINBOW - STARGAZER
Daniel Santiago About time they did this one... It's been months now since we suggested it! C'MON GUYYYSSSS!!!
Airton Sena do Brasil!
zabuzabusado FJM Brasileiro está em todo lugar kkk! Abraço irmão.
There's an additional layer to this song about the loss of integrity over time in music. There's a straight homage and play on Simon & Garfunkel. From Sound of Silence: "And the words of the prophet were written on the subway wall, and tenement hall, and echoed the sound of silence."
During the reggae part here:
"And the words of the profits were written on the studio wall, concert hall, and echoed the sound of salesmen."
Maybe the most genius thing buried in the track.
God, that's so true, and I never really got the connection there. Amazing!!
more to the point, they didn't 'play the game' with the studios; they did it Their way! That's what I get out of the song :) Your mileage may vary :)
There's a reason Green Day was inducted into the hall of fame before Rush. Politics!
Holy shit you right. I never noticed this!
Oooh... Have heard both songs many times and never made the connection
Peart and Lee comprised the greatest rhythm section in the history of rock music.
They're one of the greatest, but my personal favorite is Moon and Entwistle.
they are one of the best....my favorite is Bonham and JPJ
Chris Paul love them too
@Chris Paul Prog rock impresarios with Yes! Definitely great, but to me the awesome keyboards with Yes kind of took away from the ability to isolate bass and drums as well as Rush did. Both bands also have all-time great lead guitarists with Howe and Lifeson.
@@hisholiness4537 But to me what sets RUSH apart from even the greatness of the WHO is Alex Lifeson. Pete Townshend is great no doubt. But Alex is a better composer in my view. Kinda splitting hairs I know. For instance, could you ever see Pete pull off the musicality that Alex displays in "La Villa Strangiato"? I can't.
Neil Pert is the only drummer I know of who literally has a Doctorate in Percussion!
Subdivisions - rush
Hear hear! My favorite Rush track.
im surprised no one mentioned that underrated song by them
I know 2112 is long, I know, I know. But really it is worth listening to. If you guys can find time it really is a masterpiece. 2112 IS an adventure like you guys said it felt like this song was taking you on. It's a story and it will take you on a ride. There's a reason it's so highly requested and I hope you guys can find time to experience it. Regardless, love the videos as always you guys.
I'd be content with them listening to it in their own time and just tweeting their reaction, or doing like a summary review video. Whatever it takes to have these guys hear my favourite song, especially since their rankings of the Rush songs they covered so far is the same as mine... I reckon they'll love it.
Many Rush fans say that Tom Sawyer is the quintessential Rush song. I disagree. I think it's Spirit of the Radio.
Tom Sayer is in fact, I believe, the only song not originally written by Rush.
It was first written by their friend's band, Max Webster.
It may be themost played Rush song, but certainly not quintessential Rush.
@@LaserParody Hmm. I guess By-Tor and the Snow Dog gets more radio play?
Come on dude, you know what I meant.
BTW. Pye Dubois is a poet/lyricist that helped Peart write the lyrics for Tom Sawyer. He also helped Kim Mitchel and the band Max Webster with lyrics, but he was not part of Max Webster.
Spirit of Radio. No 'the' in the title.
Their best composition was La Villa Strangiato. Arguably the best rock instrumental ever.
@@michele3314 Jay....you speak the truth
Rush has an oddly polarizing effect. You love them or you hate them. I ❤️ them cuz I’m smart.
Neil Peart kills every song he drums on. Awesome that you guys appreciate it. One of the best drummers of all time! Great reaction as always gents. Keep them coming. Your reactions are infectious! Best on RUclips by far!
Deep Purple - Child in Time
Indeed!
Yes! The live version from 1970
yass
Second the suggestion of the live version from ‘70. Deep Purple are like Rush in that it’s a band of virtuosos locked in the almighty groove. The drummer, guitarist, and organist are in almost every rock fan’s “top ten ever” list on their instruments, but the vocals on this specific cut are absolutely genre-defining. No “Child In Time,” no Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, no kidding.
+1!
Another chance for Ryan to say #butitssosmooth. XD
All of the transitions in the tune are meant to be fun but are meant to feel like flipping radio stations. This song is an experience.
Spirit of Radio: an efficient and concise prog rock masterclass.
ByloBand Yep. They really squeezed a 15 minute song into a cool 5 minutes.
Your smiles say it all. Only 20 more Rush albums to go.
Well said
Not all great albums though. For me it’s the first 10-12 all the way up to Grace Under Pressure.
@@HotStrange get your ears checked plz
Trevor Sanso you know music is subjective right? I literally listed the majority of their albums with my comment. The late 80s stuff isn’t my favorite. Never said they were terrible.
I recall the first time I heard this band, back in Houston at some venezuelan friends house.....shit man, I could not even move, I was paralized...it was Tom Sawyer....all I could ask my friends who were playing pool and having drinks was, who the f...is that?? Imagine, me being a drum fan since I was born, banging on whatever thing I found in my way making some rythm of it...and yes, it was Tom Sawyer...since then, I became an addict to these three unique musicians...The passing of Neil Peart is a blow that will take me some time to comprehend, but so thankful for what they left for us to enjoy forever....Rush´ music never, ever grows old, it´s like there is something new to listen to in very song, no matter how many times I might have heard it...all I can do to mourn Neil is placing his picture
on my whatsApp profile....The greatest drummer and composer I have had the pleasure to fully enjoy......and the band too. Alex and Geddy, I wish you health and a long live, all of you are my heroes.
The drummer, Neil Peart, also writes most of the lyrics.
You gotta do the Rush song: "SUBDIVISIONS"
Subdivisions. Yes please.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
yes, subdivisions is one of my fav songs, guarantee these guys lose their fuckin shit over the jaw dropping synth solo transition.
Absolutely _great_ idea.
Don’t forget TOM SAWYAH!!!!
Couldn't click on this fast enough. I know you guys have loved Rush so far. A great, great band. And you guys have the best reactions.
Baz on Blades same here
Imagine what this sounded like to my small-town, seventeen-year-old years in 1980. Thanks for your show, guys. Makes me happy to see your joy and hear your appreciation!
Neil is undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers EVER, his lyricism elevates him even further among other great musicians, regardless of instrument or voice skills.
You guys need to tackle some YES soon! Roundabout would be a great one to start with!

Don't you mean: Yes to Yes!
Yes to this band and that song!

Viljar Skibenes
Can I wholeheartedly second this !! Living Colour what a fantastic musically talented band 👍👍👍👍👍
open letter to a landlord
Definitely. I love that song
They gonna lose their shit with that sped up groove at the end of the song.
Amen Brothas and Sistas! Living Coulor Please!
There are 3 songs that stick out in mind as being "anti-industry", or "anti-machine". These are songs written by smaller bands (at the time) to speak out against the monster music industry they face when they begin to make it big. The songs I know of are "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd, "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent, and "Spirit Of Radio" by Rush. There may be more songs of this nature. Please add to the list in comments. I love that theme about what musicians face when getting into "the industry". And I love those musician's candor when speaking out.
The surprise about this song is that it speaks out against the music industry and how shallow it is. And because the music industry was so shallow, this song was a big hit because that shallow industry didn't care to even know it was being insulted by this song. This song borrows lyrics from Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence". Did you catch that? Simon & Garfunkel: "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence"
Neil Peart changed it to "the sounds... of salesmen". Kinda funny.
...and he changed subway walls to 'studio' walls and tenement halls to 'concert' halls.
The transitions are reflective of the 'spirit of radio', meaning it's supposed to feel as though the listener is turning the radio dial...
Never clicked on a video so fast!
Bhiner1029 me too!
Haha! I had to stop the other video I was watching!
Yeah, I was in the middle of playing The Last of Us for the umpteenth time and came here as quick as I good when I got the notification.

Rush are MASTERS of time signatures and changes.
Anne R very true. Other modern bands use them more such as Dream Theater but to me Rush disguises them so much better, somehow it flows better and sounds more natural.
THIS! The baroque and classical compositional influences are undeniable.
Anne R you want time signatures and changes listen to TOOL. Shit will open up your mind.
Learnt it from YES
soundgarden has some really bizarre time changes. limo wreck, one of my favorites, is in 15/8
Rest in Peace Neil. I know it's been a long time, but every time I hear Rush I feel like he's right there in the room with me.
Plus, notice the alliteration: magic music makes your morning move
Morning mood, right?
Man0fMeans Maybe so. I always thought it was morning move, but I could have been wrong all these years. Mood makes just as much sense.

If an Octopus played drums. It would sound like Neal Peart.
Neal Peart is one of the all time best drummers
Love that...
Almost like Neil Peart
Neil Tipton amen
Octodrummer, a name also attributed to Joe Russo the hide under your bed eat your kids monster of JRAD
My favorite pick-me-up song. It's a great way to start the day on the trip to work.
Y'all keep talking about bands and songs being 'Fire'...may I say this the way you approach all tyes of music, promote free thinking and bring earnest joy with your videos, YOU TWO ARE FIRE AND THANK YOU!!! Please continue the awesome work and don't change!!!! #FreeThinkers
Neil Peart, the drummer, is also the lyricist. They call him "The Professor on the Drum Kit." I was inspired to pursue the drums after hearing 2112 in 8th grade and have been playing ever since. I always tell people "Neil Peart was my drum teacher" as I spent endless hours playing along to Rush as a kid. One of my favorite bands of all time. If you want to be blown away consider reviewing La Villa Strangiato off of the album "Hemispheres." Greatest piece of rock music ever written.
You guys were praising the lyrics - well that's down to the Drummer! Neil Peart is one of the greatest Drummer's of alltime, and has gotten a lot of credit as such, BUT he never seemed to ever have gotten the credit he deserved as one of the great lyricists. Geddy sings, as well as plays Bass, and also works the keyboards. And as for Alex Lifeson, he is strangely one of Rock's alltime most underrated Guitarists. The man can really shred the Guitar!!! These three men are extraordinary Musicians. They're more than just Rockers, but musical geniuses. Living legends.
Yeah, I mean...Neil and Geddy both changed the way people approach their respective instruments. I don't think we can say that about Alex, but it's safe to say that you can't keep up with Neil and Geddy for all those decades unless you are a seriously kickass musician.
Alex wrote the lyrics to YYZ....
Three dudes playing some of the most original rock music spanning multiple generations, unbelievable shit. God bless it!
DEATH - CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN
The whole "happy-jovial" thing was on purpose since the song is supposed to remind the listener of the kind of joy they experience when they "Begin the day with a friendly voice - a companion unobtrusive; Plays that song that's so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood". In other words, when we hear a great song on the radio during our morning commute and it makes our day. So the chord progression/melody follows suit to give the song a happy vibe. Rush knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they were writing this song, and they are masters of piecing together seemingly unattachable pieces of music. Give them some time and they can work a groove out of the most diverse scraps of music you can think of. Amazing talent. The more you listen deeply into their music, the more you'll hear the genius. In the reggae part of this song, Rush borrowed and altered Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" lyrics: "For the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence". They became: "For the words of the prophets are written on the studio walls, and concert halls! (Cheering is heard) And it echoes with the sound of salesmen - of salesmen - oooooh Salesmen!" This speaks cynically of how radio has become less about playing music and more about trying to make money. Anyway, love your reviews guys - keep 'em coming!
Check out The Yes Album..Starship Trooper....and Yours is no Disgrace
'Genius' is a good descriptor, and for much of what Rush did. This song gives a hug to all of us listeners while giving 'the finger' to music execs. It also marks the beginning of their becoming more mainstream (1981) and IMO is why they were held out of the RRHOF as long as they were.
"It's like a magical happiness" - RUSH in a nutshell :D
Wooo! More Rush! Love it guys!
Request: Kyuss - Whitewater
Remi Vienneau LeClair
Or Kyuss - green machine
Gardenia
@devidart and @steve: Kyuss - "any" would work! Odyssey, Gardenia, Phototropic, Green Machine?
Love everything about this!! Rush is a timeless band that still influences newer bands (our album artwork is a homage to the 2112 storyline) to this day! Not surprised you guys didnt do 2112 because of its length but the first two sections of the song (Overture and Temples of Syrinx) only total out to like 6 minutes or so and is definitely worth checking out! You'd make a lot of nerds real happy if you did!
Death - Symbolic!
