    The opening rhythm is Morse Code for YYZ, which is the 3-letter code for their hometown airport in Toronto. The band were in a small aircraft landing there and heard the morse code over the comm system. That morse pattern inspired the song. Great videos guys, welcome to metal!!!!

      I never knew that, how cool!

  • @Nightbreed82
    @Nightbreed82 7 лет назад +102

    *Fun fact:* YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as guitarist Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them. Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags."
    The piece's introduction, played in a time signature of 10/8, repeatedly renders "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements

    • @TheRockpit
      @TheRockpit 7 лет назад +7

      Further fun fact. Canadian airport ID codes all start with a Y because when they were first implementing the codes, they forgot about Canada so had to go back and add them with a Y since all the other codes were taken.

      I think the term "progressive rock" had been floating around on the fringes of mainstream, but I'd wager most average music consumers of the day hadn't heard that term floated until the mid late 70's which is when I first heard that term used. It seemed to me at that time that people began retroactively using it to describe bands such as you mentioned, but also more famous groups like the Who and Yes, both of whom had major influence on Lee and Peart. One more point, With the exception of ELP (most of the time) Rush is about the only group that produces that full almost symphonic sound with only 3 members. That to me is what distinguishes Rush, and what defines progressive rock. The tempo shifts, the key changes, ..... Rush made the term "progressive rock" mainstream in my opinion. I remember for a time that bands who now are commonly referred to as prog rock were called things like synth rock, pre-punk, post psych.... nobody knew what to call them... which are legitimate genres to be sure, but not really how most would describe Rush. Also it seems to me that you're being a bit Brit centric, don't get me wrong, but Rush is often sneered at because they're not British in some circles. Just sayin you picked all U.K. bands. I hope you're not the Euro-centric music snob type.

      Nah, they went out on Neil Peart's terms... It was obvious that Geddy and Alex wanted to keep going... I use their first names like I know them... But seriously, you can tell in the farewell doc that Peart was the only one TRULY done...

    • @SteelCurtain_90
      @SteelCurtain_90 6 лет назад +5

      jimjonesthreethousand., actually Ricardo Castillo is too accurate for you to shrug it off as "nah". The band indeed went out with dignity. Peart's shoulders, arms and feet are no longer physically capable of holding up to touring live and Neil backed out stating he wouldn't do it w/o being able to perform at his best. Alex and Geddy were disappointed in the decision, but both acknowledged that it just wouldn't be Rush without Neil. So they went out as one... just like Ricardo Castillo very respectfully stated. I'm his 100th thumbs up, but you could call it his 101st when actually I'm giving his comment 2 big thumbs up!

      As a Rush fanatic of 40+ years, I cannot agree more with your comment. These two guys are great - just found them. Forget genres, forget racist stereotypes - these guys obviously love music and have a genuine appreciation for music that is indeed GREAT. Moving Pictures is without question one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Period. Created by one of the greatest bands of all time. Period. And by basically three guys who honestly love and respect each other as no band of their stature ever has.
      How frickin' awesome is it that 37 years after its release, two guys who probably weren't even born when Moving Pictures first hit the shelves can really love and groove to this piece of instrumental genius?
      cheers guys! Best part is you can now go and discover for the first time all the musical masterpieces from Rush's enormous, four-decade spanning catalog.
      Canada is automatically forgiven for eternity for all sins, past and present, merely by birthing Geddy, Alex and Neil. :D

      Cody W - there is a bit more explanation for this song and the musicians in the band. YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near the band’s hometown. All three of them are playing additional instruments through MIDI controllers/triggers. Geddy uses a traditional keyboard and pedal controller, Alex uses a MIDI pedal controller, and Neil uses MIDI triggers. They all are sequenced to produce different parts of the song so with only three people on stage they can pull off a very big sound. The rest is pure talent!!! And lots of it...

    Loved the review - you guys are so down to earth (new subscriber here). Some fun facts about YYZ by Rush: 1) YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport - Rush's home town (all major airports have a 3-letter airport designation code). Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart has said, in reference to the airport code, "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags." 2) The beginning bell rhythm Neil is playing is the actual Morse code identifying signal of Toronto Airport (every airport is assigned a unique pulse/Morse code and that code is always being transmitted so that pilots can tell, roughly, where they are and verify that their navigational radios are tuned properly). 3) The airport's "rhythm" code was discovered by Rush's guitarist Alex Lifeson who is, not only an accomplished guitarist, but an accomplished private pilot as well. 4) The music was written by Geddy Lee (bassist) and Neil Peart during their recording sessions at Le Studio in Quebec, Canada in 1980. 5) In the March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine, Alex Lifeson explained the bizarre-sounding harmonics heard before the solo: "I create them by playing off the pick and my thumb. I hold the pick so there's a slight edge of it showing between my thumb and finger. This allows my thumb to mute the string, and that's what causes the harmonic to ring." 6) The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002. 7) YYZ was nominated and was the runner up for the Best Rock Instrumental award at the 1982 Grammys. It lost to The Police's "Behind my Camel."

    Finally, RUSH YYZ (YYzed)
    Gentleman thank you for finally getting to Rush, the greatest band ever (In my opinion). Many people criticize Rush for not having groove you proved their observation wrong! Just a note, in case you guys were unaware, Rush is a power trio, yes, three guys make the glorious sound that is Rush. Notice the Keyboard section. There are times when Geddy Lee is playing bass, keyboards and singing at the same time! Let's see Led Zeppelin do that! (A reference when I heard that Rush lost out to them in the vote for songs).
    You comment about the lyrics in the song, well if you want to hear people singing YYZ go to Rush in Rio and you will hear and see 60000 Brazillian fans singing and dancing to YYZ. It will blow you away.
    Indeed there is glass breaking in the song. After the Bass/Drum tradeofff, there are three times that you hear glass breaking in the song. The great thing is two of the three are not played on beat one, which as you have noticed give a funky feel to the song, among other riffs.
    YYZ is the airport code for Toronto, which is where Rush is from (yes just another great Canadian Band! LOL, like Devin Townsend, and I know how you feel about him!) Just for reference Rush is the 3rd largest selling band of all time. The song was inspired by the Morse code for YYZ (written in 5/4 time), as Rush used to fly into the Toronto airport and Neil Peart (Drummer) heard the pattern and decided to use it in the song. So the opening which is played on Crotales is YYZ, and shows up as a theme throughout the song. YYZ was the first (and maybe) only Canadian instrumental song ever nominated for a Grammy, it lost to Behind my Camel by the Police.
    During the Exit Stage Left tour (the tour for Moving Pictures, from which this song comes) Neil would insert a 6 minute drum solo after the last breakdown, it would send many Rush fans crazy and it is what helped solidify Neil Peart's position as one of the greatest drummers in Rock Music.
    I have played this song many times live (I am a drummer and Neil is my hero) and it ALWAYS gets the audience moving. Although not one of Rush's more complex songs, it does pose some challenges, particularly the triplet feels in the Bass/.Drum trade off section.
    The song is a wonderful nexus (as you pointed out) of various styles of music. Their entire catalogue is a mixture of musical influences from all over the world. If you listen to songs like Tai Shan, Mystic Rhythms, Roll the Bones (which has a rap section), Rush does it all and still ensures that the music is complex enough to satisfy musicians like me.
    Rush's quintessential song is Tom Sawyer which does have lyrics. Neil Peart the drummer, is not only an accomplished drummer but also a published author, and many of Rush's lyrical content (which Neil writes) is used in poetry classes to demonstrate simile and metaphor (I know this because I have taught using his work).
    There are so many great songs by Rush that I cannot even begin to list them. Check out more of them, and you will see their earlier stuff (up to Permanent Waves (album title) 1979) is far more progressive. With Permanent Waves to Grace Under Pressure (1984) you are more in a "pop" period. From Grace Under Pressure onto Test for Echo you get into African, R&B and Rock. While their final albums Vapour Trails to Clockwork Angles is an amalgam of all the above.
    Again, thanks for playing Rush, I NEVER get tired of hearing them. My wife sent me your link on this one because she knows I listen to you all the time, and always complain that you dont play any Rush!
    Keep up the great music and now play Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater (Metropolis does not cut it). Cheers
    Karl Sloman
    Drummer

      Robert, I think you will find Bytor and the Snow Dog was on All the World's a Stage, but I could be wrong. Although I am a HUGE Rush fan, I am more of a fan of the 80s to present stuff by the band. Although I maintain, if I could produce anything Rush did I would be extremely proud. A weak Rush song is better than most bands best songs! Cheers and thanks for commenting!

      Pobbin (I am not calling you Daddy, because that just sounds wrong! LOL) I read an article a number of years ago from an online source. The list of the top 5 bands were The Beatles (of course), Rolling Stones, Rush, Aerosmth and Kiss. Regardless, Of all the bands listed Rush stands out because their success was made without any radio play. They did it by touring and just making amazing music.

      Don Price at 3:47 “I’m sure there was some influence there.” Which based on their conversation implies that MJ’s Beat It influenced Rush’s YYZ which as we have learned in this comment thread that is simply not the case. Both great artists in their own right just wanted to convey the thoughts that I and others had at the reaction to the baseline.

    I became a Rush fan right before this came out. I remember listening to the radio and hearing that they were putting out an album called Moving Pictures and I couldn't wait for it it drop. Hearing that for the first time was amazing, but that's something that's only gonna happen once in a lifetime. This song and the rest of the album has become so familiar over time and repeated listening that it's like I know it's awesome but that feeling of awesomeness isn't as intense as it was when I first heard it. To watch two guys who didn't grow up in the rock culture that I grew up in critique it, dig it, and analyze it in their unique way felt amazing. I love watching stuff like this because it brings me back to a time when I would discover a band I never heard before or a band I liked would release a new album which I would get and I just couldn't wait to see if my friends would be as blown away by hearing for the first time like I was. Thank you guys!
