- Last year Tom Evans attempted to win both Western States 100 Endurance Run and UTMB in the same year. It was an ambitious goal, and regretfully a risk that didn't pay off for Tom.
No Stone Left Unturned, a film by Santara Studious in partnership with Maurten, Garmin, SunGod and Shokz, tells the story of Tom's grit, determination and bravery through the highs and lows of a turbulent year, as he gives absolutely everything he has, in pursuit of the coveted UTMB title.

I'm so sorry you were mugged in Cape Town Tom - I can't imagine the trauma and shock that must have come with it, and I'm glad you received therapy and you're back in the game. However, your comment about 5 people being killed is simply untrue, and upsetting to listen to. I hope that you'll come back to Cape Town when you feel ready, and experience the warmth and support amongst the trail runnning community, who are always willing to advise other runners on safe areas to explore. I know you left town soon after, but I hope you felt the outpouring of love and support from the locals, who were mortified about what happened to you. It's truly a magical place to be on the trails, and I'm sorry that incident tainted your experience here. Best of luck at UTMB.

I was in Cape Town when this happened and remember that I felt very bad for you. However it is simply not true that 5 people were killed. Yes, there have been lots of muggings but nobody was killed! It'd be great if you could correct that, as it sheds a bad light on Cape Town. Not sure why you felt the need to add something that is not a fact to your story.

Tom, firstly I can only imagine how traumatic it must have been, the mugging you experienced, hectic. Good to hear you are back on the trails again. Secondly, you really should check your facts before making statements about people being murdered on those same trails. I work in the tourism industry, as do many South Africans, and to hear stuff like this being put out in the public without being accurate, can be hugely damaging to public perception of Cape Town as a destination. Yes, Table Mountain is tricky to police as it is any fenced reserve on the urban fringes, that is our reality. But we as a community are doing everything we can to make it safe for all trail users.

Tom, really sorry about what happened to you in Cape Town. It should never have happened and we hope you are able to get past it and move "onwards and upwards" to great success.
Your stats on crime, as reported in the clip, are, however, incorrect and untrue. There may have been seven muggings on various trails that month but five people were not murdered in the trails in that month, or even in that year. There have been five murders in the Park but over a 20 year period. You will do trail running and tourism in Cape Town no end of damage with such inaccurate reporting.

Really glad you are ok and terrible to have to go through a mugging. But making a statement about 5 people being killed on the trails is simply not in true at all and spreading this as a fact hugely unfair to a community and country as a whole. Really leaves a bad taste and detracts from what otherwise would have been a great episode, including the lows of being a victim of a mugging had it been told with factual context.

Great to see you've made a full recovery after your experience in Cape Town Tom, but please, spreading false information is not the way to improve the situation there. The statement about 5 people being killed is demonstrably false and any law and order official from the City of Cape Town would be happy to give you the actual statistics if you so requested.

Soo much golden info in these podcasts. However, they are starting to sound a bit like interviews. It would be great to hear more about Brett and his journey. More fun questions, stories and banter. Perhaps talk about topics in general instead of a list of questions. The journey through you coaching brett for a race would be a great series for the listeners.

As a local I was also devastated when this happened. He must've got terrible advice to think that it was "considered relatively safe" to run alone there! At that stage it was a known crime hotspot. They have since stepped up security and surveillance, but it's a big area to police and is after all, an urban park, despite feeling like wilderness - drug addicts finding unsuspecting prey 😡. Go Tom.
