  • This may be obvious, but running isn't easy, but it's something everyone can do. One becomes a runner by running. The pain in your ligaments and joints are signs you are becoming a runner.
This was Kris Bertagnolli's first ULTRA, but will it be his last? Follow along as he goes from start to finish in a grueling battle with the trail, and himself.
The music is from Musicbed.com and the production of this film was made for the Musicbed Challenge 2024.

I love how Kris explained what he was going through and how he got through on the other side. I've started down the road of long distance walking and just recently my body was telling me I could go faster - it wanted to, but I have this narrative that keeps telling me "I'm not a runner". So the part of this video I found very helpful, is where he says how your body isn't ready to run, but if you're consistent it can get there. Thanks for the motivation.

Amazing video bro!! Very well done. This needs to be a T-Shirt. "I met the devil and Jesus at the same time"- Ultrarunner. Whoever trained you gave you amazing advice!! To go slow slow to let your joints and such catch up. As weird as it sounds your cardo system is the fastest to adapt but if you outgrow your joints and ligaments it's all bad. Seen it way too many times. As someone who has suffered horribly from blisters in the past....that one was a doozie. Very glad you were able to keep going with it:)

That’s honestly a great idea about the t-shirt! It’s so true. Jeremey, my trainer, was awesome. I couldn’t have done it without him. Thank you for watching and for the support 🫶 - Kris

I see lots of people doing marathons and ultra-marathons, and I have to wonder what kind of damage they are doing to their bodies? (Especially years down the road). I’m a runner, but I “only” do 4 miles a day (every day, because my dog needs the exercise) with a 1000 foot climb in elevation. (So, a nice workout! Plus I’m at 5,600 feet elevation, so the O2 content of the air is lower, which makes me work harder). I am 67 years old, and have been running for over 40 years, and hope to run till I am not able to anymore. I worry that marathoners and ultra-marathoners are damaging their joints (and maybe internal organs) with their pursuit of ever-increasing distances. The problem is, these problems may not show up until they are much older, and the damage has been done. Take care of your body with REASONABLE exercise and diet folks! It’s the only body you have!

I was convinced to try ultras by a 70 something year old, who had been- and still was- doing them since he was 60. At every race I go to, I see many people over 60.
I personally have a rare genetic issue that gave me a heart attack at 42. Both cardiologists have approved my ultra running, because they feel the benefits I gain far exceed the risks. They'd rather have me running a slow 50k than a fast 5k.
My knees and hip hurt when I stop running for a month or more, but are pain free when I'm training/ racing ultras. There are also far less overuse injuries present on trails vs roads. I know many people who have had joint replacement surgery due to other sports injuries, or obesity... but I don't personally know any runners who have, and certainly none in danger due to their running.
Yes, you'll have those pushing the intensity, giving it their all, peeing blood and/or collapsing... but you literally have that group in every sport, who thrive on pushing their bodies to the max. While I will never be one of those people, I greatly admire them, because they are the ones pushing the boundaries of what we know the human body - and mind- are capable of.

That’s impressive man! 4 miles per day is great! There’s a lot of mixed reviews out there about long running. At the end of the day, it changed me and I’m grateful for it. The gentleman I finished the race with was in his 60’s and it was his 5th Ultra of the year. He loves them. Maybe you should give one a try….it may just change your opinion.
