We've all been there before Abi haha. I've learnt from the past that when it comes to packaging always check the PPI that it's 300 or more, check any images that it's saved in the right colour mode (CMYK), the colour profile aligned to the printer also printer usually supplies the printing specs/templates as well, and always do a double check by printing it yourself which you did there. Abi!!! Thank you for sharing that story. I recently had nearly identical feedback from a client, and was really beginning to question myself as a designer. It means so much to see that a designer I look up to and have learned so much from, has gone through the same thing.
I think everyone goes through it at some point and even though it's horrible in the moment, you learn so much from it! Make sure you don't let it hurt your confidence and keep going, you got this! 😊
Before you ever start the design process, ask the client if they have already chosen a print vendor and if so can they supply you with the dieline. Most larger companies have packaging/engineering groups that determine what size the packaging has to be to accommodate their products and production machinery (for packing). Designers generally don't determine the packaging format, though they can at times if the client has no infrastructure to do so. Also, keep in mind that dielines coincide with the cutting die tooling, so most companies will work with their printer to see if they have existing tooling on hand that matches the size they are looking for. If not, tooling then has to be made which can cost several thousand dollars. You don't want to be the person responsible if you make a mistake with the dieline and the tooling comes out wrong! Let the people who make the tooling create the dieline in their CAD department and send you the dieline as an .eps or .ai file.
Hit the nail on the head! The majority of businesses will already have a supplier for their product meaning they can supply the dieline . But I know a lot of my audience (including myself) work with small businesses/start ups where setting up the infrastructure for the client is required. Great points tho!
@@anushreemohta18 A tooling die is a piece of equipment comprised of knife edges that either cut or perforate the box material. Usually if you are working designing for a company, they work with their printer(s) to help determine the best size carton for their product, in a lot of cases they have a packaging engineering group that does this. Based on that, the printer creates a tooling die which is used to cut the box material into cartons. As the designer you will generally be supplied a dieline to set your art up on. That dieline is a flat representation of the tooling die. It shows the trim of the box, where cuts are made and also the perforation lines which may be represented with dashed lines, these shows where the box folds. If the carton size the company is using is a common size, their printer may have an existing tooling die on hand which they can readily use. If they don't they have to create one which can cost a few thousand dollars. Just know if you are designing a package and you create the dieline or download one from one of those online dieline sites, the printer will probably recreate it based on the tolerances they use for their printing equipment and may send you their approved version of the dieline. You then may have to transpose your art to that dieline. This helps ensures that your art setup matches the die tooling so the cartons are cut properly.
I’m not a graphic designer or ever planned to be but your content some how makes everything seem so entertaining. I’ve been binge watching your videos a bit too much lately🙈
Oh wow, well this is amazing to hear! A lot of time goes into the videos to try and make them engaging to not just designers but people in general, so thank you! 😊
Biggest issue of people is that they generally give up as soon as they face the slightest obstacle. Tenacity, perseverance, constant-self feedback & improvement, patience is key to success.
In your presence I feel so safe, cozy & amazing! Thank you Abi for making me smile every day 🙏 I have been watching your content for about 2 years now and feel like I have a friend I'd love to have coffee with and all the other fun girly things 🫶💕
ah yess! I need to do a community meet up one day! Would be so fun! As always, so grateful for your comments and and continued support, never goes unnoticed 😊💛
Lol, thank you so much for being open about this. Nowadays I only seem to work with people who respect and love my work (not sure if that's because I got better at my job or if I just started picking better clients), but back in the day, I would get an emails like this once in a while, leaving me shocked cause I worked so hard and thought I had something so great.
I think as we evolve as freelancers we start to subconsciously pick better clients, we know which ones will be good and which will be a pain! The thing is even though they feel so bad at the time, we need experiences like this to make us better!
Another thing that is really important is to check if there are any spot colors used on the design. I work on a printing company and I deal with these mistakes everyday, so right now I think it's normal. Usually I make a test to check the quality and try to avoid any damage + as I'm a designer for my self, I try my best to communicate with other designers and consult them about the packaging tricks...|Cheers ✌
Great example of "not about how hard you fall"... ...getting back at it with a great & bright attitude is, for many, easier said than done! It helps to know that you'll be Recording Your New Process for viewers, but I know that this gave A LOT of people a nice, bright kick in the pants to just get back at it! A Great Way To Inspires Others. Nice, Abi! 👍
Abi!! Love your videos. They're really helping personally. Would love a video about font licensing and some other behind the scenes stuff for designers. But thank you for all you do!
hi abi! thank you so much for these videos. i’ve always been intimidated by graphic design but have always wanted to become a designer and your style of teaching is one of the only ones on youtube that works for me. hope you’re taking care of yourself, and wishing only the best for you and your business! 💗
This is amazing to hear! Life's to short to not give it a go, you can become a designer, anyone can. Just have to put the work in to getting better and be patience! Really appreciate the support, thank you 😊
Glad you brought up these stumbling blocks when it comes to packaging! Creating quality packaging that isn’t a disaster is incredibly stressful if you don’t know what to research or prepare in advance. Asking the right questions to begin with is definitely key - after creating beauty packaging and textile repeats, I learnt that the hard way!
Hi abi i had just started my graphic design journey.i was so overwhelmed by everything.your videos gives me confidence and hope that one day i will be a great designer like you. Thank you ❤
THIS IS THE VIDEO I WAS WAITING FOR!!! This gave me flashbacks to this nightmare packaging I made for a bakery. It was my first time doing packaging and I had NO CLUE. I literally made a dieline myself using the line tool (smh biggest regret lol) and I could not for the life of me get the proportions correct. It was horrible and not the impression you want to make as a new intern. In the end a senior had to fix it because I kept failing. One thing I learnt is to NEVER make your own dielines. Leave that to the professionals
These experiences are so horrible at the time but we learn so much from them! A lot of the time the manufacture should already have dielines for all the products they offer! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Haven’t done any packaging yet, but these are definitely things I would never think of if I did! Will refer to this video in the future as they are some helpful tips!
I'm an aspiring artist and I'm still not yet sure about my path on whether I'll focus on UI UX, graphic design, or illustrating (mainly using my own drawings for a poster design or etc). I'm still not sure if I'm distinguishing the fields I mentioned the right way. But yea, your videos are helpful for me to keep on track of what my style really is. Thank you so much for all the educational videos and sharing your work!
this is super insightful on packaging! im in a printing program for university and package designing and production is one of the many things i'll get to do later in the years. i can see this helping for the future!
Wow!!! Thank you so much😍. Your videos are helping a lot in my personal and professional life. The knowledge you provide is top-notch and outstanding. Keep creating such wonderful videos Abi
I can safely say I've made these mistakes before 😂 For me, it's either being careless or pressured by time. 9 hours in the office, I get randomly briefed that packaging needs to be done for a product and only have a couple of hours to deliver it. In fact, I should have delivered before they briefed it. The pressure of delivering something on time can lead to skipping important steps or blind you of certain quality control aspects. If it helps anyone, don't be me, don't be afraid to ask for more time.
happens to the best of us😅 Being in a time crunch can certainly lead to mishaps! Great point tho! I think more people need to be firmer with their clients and ensure they set realistic expectations and timeliens..
Hi abi I’m loving your channel but can you go in a bit more detail in how you approach the client like what type of questions to ask and how do you deliver your work to them and if they don’t have dieline template what to do,and also how do you make those videos where you animate your mockups which you show in the end of creating a logo or packaging?
I have dedicated videos for things like this! Questions you should ask your clients: ruclips.net/video/kS5jGXKVzB4/видео.html how to present your work: ruclips.net/video/MOlTINHbSLA/видео.html when it comes to how I make the videos, I have a video coming out on on this!
Thank you for always educating us and making it fun. I learn a lot from your videos and I am an architect, same principles and guides area applicable in my line of work. ❤❤
Hey Abi, I love it....well I love all of your videos, but his one was over the moon as you said earlier. I'm a graphic designer and quality control is a step many designers overlook when it comes to label design and package design, and sometimes most of them don't feature it in their videos. Please make more videos like this. And should you venture more into package design, Esko Studio(an adobe illustrator add-on) coupled with Astrios CAD are some awesome tools that helps you visualise in 3D the package design before printing, ultimately saving you time, money and avoiding angry clients. Keep up the amazing work, I'm looking forward to Chris Do having you as a guest on The Futur.
ah thank you!! really appreciate it 😊I will do, more videos to come! And thank you for tools I will download them. That would be so cool, I'd love to have a conversation with him!
Love your videos 😍 I learnt new informations in this video about packaging as a beginner ☺️, would love to see more content about designs printing. how to setup a file for print and how to make sure designs get printed well :)
When it comes to client conflict and negative reviews, it may or may not get in your head, but it could trigger a range of different problems that could sometimes take you a long time to get out of. You start to question if you're even good enough to call yourself a professional. To anyone reading this and going through it, give yourself time. Enough time until you start think logically and not feeling sorry for yourself. Sometimes you figure out that you're doing projects that you only like as a hobby and not as real projects. Sometimes you figure out that the clients you got weren't good themselves. Sometimes you find you're taking things too much personally because of other things going on with your life. And sometimes you may also find out that you need more practice. That isn't a bad thing, it is just a part of life, you sometimes suck at some projects even though it is your passion. Every good athlete performs terrible sometimes, but that doesn't mean he is a terrible athlete altogether. If you had clients before, it means that you are valuable to people, so don't let a bad project put you down. It happened to me last month, and now I'm recovering from it. Now it doesn't matter anymore. 😊
can you make a video guide from zero to hero on starting freelance for brand designer, like check-lists on skill sets, client processings, etc. it is like a road map for people like me that would like to give a shot on brand design freelancing. Thank you this would be a big help.
@@abiconnick Thank you so much... your videos are great help to me as I am preparing myself to start freelancing again but this time it will be on graphic design which I do for quite a long already. But I'm kinda slowing down a bit coz I feel like I'm not ready yet with all the initial process of getting client (my first client).
@@kamiyasho3899 This is amazing to hear, thank you :) You'll never feel completely ready, I know I didn't sometimes you just have to do it and be okay with learning as you go! I wish you the best :)
Abi, yesterday i discovered your channel and Im really liking your videos! I have an idea for a video, I think it would be cool if you used figma to make the logo for a brand, just for fun. I think it would be really interesting!
@5.27 you create the view of the box adding the front pattern. Do you make those video’s yourself? How did you make that animation?? Would love a tutorial on that!
I love the real examples and the honesty in your videos. They're really helpful and inspiring! ♡ I was wondering by the way.. how do you do your target audience research? And how far do you take that? It's something I'm not sure of, so if you happen to make a video on that one, I'm definitely all eyes and ears. 👀👂🏻
Glad you liked the video 😊Will for sure make a video on it, but what I will say is the majority of info should come from the client as they know their audience better than you!
@@abiconnick I'm glad you said that, cause I feel it is mostly their job to do the research! Reading about marketing & design made me unsure of my role, especially as a freelancer. Looking forward to the videos to come!
I want to do graphic design and your videos are so helpful and inspiring. Love videos like these. Also would love if you could do more photoshop/ illustrator help videos as I am trying to learn how to use these programs ? Also I would love if you would consider do online workshops 💕
Fab Video Abi! Could you do a video on packaging up files for clients? Eg. do you send them pngs of their logos in all different colours, do you send them blank squares of their colour palettes to use as backgrounds? What do you send them? Should they be all jpegs so they can use them on their socials or do you just send them the pdfs/eps files and leave it up to them to figure it out to export them?! How long does packaging up brand files normally take? Thank you so much!
Thanks again for the best content, it's really nice when there's a new video! You mostly answer exactly the question I had in my head a few days before, thanks as always :)! Another question, which i pad do you use? I had tested the new Pro and the air in the shop, I think both are sufficient to work with procreate, maybe a previous version is ok too?
No problem, glad the video could help 😊 Yeah my iPad is a couple of generations old, as long as it's compatible with a version of the apple pencil then it should be fine!
It happens! But I wouldn't change it for the world, I learn so much from that experience and it's partly the reason I'm the designer I am today! See the thing is with school,/college/University the teachers teach what they are told to teach, meaning a lot of the info can sometime be outdated, and with things like design or art, they just teach you about the technical side e.g how to do a certain technique but not about the business side!
@@abiconnick TRUE!! But Negotiation, Contract and Project Management should be a subject on its own at school/college/university. I mean, IT skills, for instance, I can also acquire from tutorials, but who is going to guide me on managing every phase of a complex project like packaging? I remember asking my teacher about this (where? how? who?), but she neither gave us examples of manufacturers nor did I ever hear anything about dielines. We did packaging design, but without authentic dielines! I remember I just thought how little idea I had about this topic and how lost I was because I never got an answer. I was so frustrated until I found YOU! Now I don't remember wether we downloaded the image or just designed the box ourselves, but it wasn't it. Ahahahah... what a mess!!
Love this Abi! I usually choose my colours for clients based on RGB but should I be doing it based off CMYK if they also have printing elements? Because I found I have to explain if you get business cards printed it won’t be exact same colours as their digital elements for example I recently did a neon colour palette x
Thank you Jenny 💛 So if the brand plans to have physical products then yes choose colours based of CMYK, but say it's a SaaS business the RGB would be fine! x
Thank you!! So because this is just a delivery box none of that information is required! But say on a drinks bottle you’d need all of that info on the actual label or packaging, it depends on what the product is! For this business they have a separate price list that goes inside the box and then dietary information for the brownies states it can be found on their website! X
So helpful~ its my first time to encounter the word "dieline" might want to explore design packaging in the future! and ohh plus the brownie really looks delicious!
You should do it! Packaging can be so fun! And a lot of the time the client will send you one of the physical products so you get to see your design in real life! Those brownies are now long gone, they didn't last long around me 😂😅 Thank you 💛
@@mayjanedoquila For printing you should always choose CMYK to get the color closest to what you’re aiming for in real life. RGB is the color profile chosen for anything screen related!
Hi Abi, just found your channel a couple of days back and have been hooked since then! Your designs are so clean yet fun. I am a front-end developer but packaging design has really got me excited, can you please suggest some resources/courses to learn this art? Or do you teach somewhere online? Thanks, already! :)
@Abi Connick Thanks for replying on my previous comment. Honestly never seen a creator so much active in their comment section. Your response has taken my confidence and motivation to the next level. Also, for the third answer, though you are saying you would not do this but, in your videos, you also present the logos and design in different colors and backgrounds so please clear why you do that? Secondly, I also wanted to ask where do you usually find your clients? Are they local or international clients? And how much time it took you from learning designing to taking your first order? Lastly, from where did you learn designing, illustrator and all the stuff? Was it any online platform like RUclips or through any institute. Furthermore, do you have any online course for someone who is a beginner and wants to learn graphic designing, illustrator etc.? Moreover, so sorry that I wrote your name wrong in my previous comment. Best of luck and wishes for you!
No problem, want to try and give back to my community as much as I can! So when I do that, that is to show the colour palette I have chosen, it isn't a choice on which one to chose, it just shows the cleint all the colours I have chosen for their brand (normally 3/4). I find all my clients through instagram and RUclips, they actually approach me after seeing my work which is great (this is why I encourage everyone to start posting on social media). I actually worked in an agency before going freelance and was there 4 years before leaving. I mostly learnt on the job, but online courses and youtube tutorials have helped along the way. I'm currently building an illustrator course bts, hoping to bring it out within next 2 months! No problem on the name, easily done! Hope the answers helped :)
Aaaaaah the little cute packaging mock-up!!! I gotta get a printer now because that is a brilliant idea. Once again, thank you so much Abi. ❤️❤️ I just rough sketch the packaging design on a paper and draw the die line and cut it out , but it doesn’t help me visualise or quality check my design. One quick question Abi, when ordering packaging for your client, do you request payment for their order during onboarding or just before you place your order?
haha so cute! 😂 No problem, glad I was able to help 💛 So with this I request it before the order as it isn't money for my time/work but for the packaging!
@@abiconnick yeah that makes more sense. Thank you! You’re wonderful and one of the only designers I highly appreciate, that truly show us the reality of running a design business while also educating us. ❤️
Such a helpful video! Just wondering, when you order packaging for a client do you get the client to send you the money for it first? If not, whats your go to approach?
Glad it was helpful :) So I always get the client to order the packaging, I supply the manufacture, and die line to upload, then they proceed with payment and placing the order. Ideally you never want to pay for something that the client should, just to minimise risk! But if it's a sample then you're fine to go ahead and order.
As a display designer I recognize some of the mistakes you named. Get all the information you need from the client and keep communicating. And if you have good experience with a manufacturer, don't change a winning team. Love your design!
I don't know if I will get into packaging design, even though as a designer I have my hand in a bit of everything, but I guess some day this will be very handy if I really have to design packages again.

Can you elaborate a bit about the tooling?
Usually I make a test to check the quality and try to avoid any damage + as I'm a designer for my self, I try my best to communicate with other designers and consult them about the packaging tricks...|Cheers
✌
Great point!
Nice, Abi! 👍

hi abi! thank you so much for these videos. i’ve always been intimidated by graphic design but have always wanted to become a designer and your style of teaching is one of the only ones on youtube that works for me. hope you’re taking care of yourself, and wishing only the best for you and your business! 💗

The Flow of this video was brilliantly executed and really informative! Well Done Abi!
ah thank you John! Worked hard on the planning for this video, hopefully the retention can show this 😅
many thanks they are real useful information, you are amazing designer
You're very welcome!
Glad you brought up these stumbling blocks when it comes to packaging! Creating quality packaging that isn’t a disaster is incredibly stressful if you don’t know what to research or prepare in advance. Asking the right questions to begin with is definitely key - after creating beauty packaging and textile repeats, I learnt that the hard way!
it can be very stressful! Feel like you have so much responsibility! You're right, asking the right questions is so important!
Honestly I've learnt more from watching Abi's videos than the 3 years I spent studying Graphic Design at college :)
Happy the videos have been so helpful! thank you 😊

Hi abi i had just started my graphic design journey.i was so overwhelmed by everything.your videos gives me confidence and hope that one day i will be a great designer like you.
Thank you ❤
So glad I could help 😊 Wish you the best!
@@abiconnick definitely learnt that now but at the time it was so humiliating I'm still not over it😂😭

Very good video . Both informative and entertaining. I really liked how the colors looked similar in both screen and printed packaging.

haha I'm a mind reader! Hope the video helps :)
Thank you for all the amazing quality content, as always Abi!
No Problem, glad you liked it 😊
I can safely say I've made these mistakes before 😂 For me, it's either being careless or pressured by time.
This video is super helpful! Thank you Abi.
Glad to hear it! Thank you 😊
Hi abi I’m loving your channel but can you go in a bit more detail in how you approach the client like what type of questions to ask and how do you deliver your work to them and if they don’t have dieline template what to do,and also how do you make those videos where you animate your mockups which you show in the end of creating a logo or packaging?
I have dedicated videos for things like this! Questions you should ask your clients: ruclips.net/video/kS5jGXKVzB4/видео.html how to present your work: ruclips.net/video/MOlTINHbSLA/видео.html when it comes to how I make the videos, I have a video coming out on on this!

Thank you for your kind words! A lot of time goes into the videos to make them fun so it's appreciated! Glad they have been able to help 😊💛

What great advice! Thank you for leaving this comment, I'm sure it will help a lot of people 😊

You poor thing! I am so sorry that happened to you. Thank you so much for sharing so we can avoid such problems!
Thank you Jenny 💛 So if the brand plans to have physical products then yes choose colours based of CMYK, but say it's a SaaS business the RGB would be fine! x
Great video! 😍 Just one question where does neccessary information go? Like pricing, manufacturing, expiry, barcode and everything.
Thank you!! So because this is just a delivery box none of that information is required! But say on a drinks bottle you’d need all of that info on the actual label or packaging, it depends on what the product is!
For this business they have a separate price list that goes inside the box and then dietary information for the brownies states it can be found on their website! X
I want a brand identity by Abi so bad 😫😫I would give full creative control 🤞🏾🤞🏾
Currently closed to client work at the moment, but thank you! I really appreciate it 💛
Your videos give me confidence
Glad to hear it!
So helpful~ its my first time to encounter the word "dieline" might want to explore design packaging in the future! and ohh plus the brownie really looks delicious!
by the way how does choosing CMYK affect prints? Is the difference noticeable?

Love getting comments like this! Actually currently building my first big course, coming out sometime in April! 😊
Once again, a super helpful video!!
Glad it was helpful!😊
@@ZuhuraHassanofficial Thank you, means a lot!
