And I know how spot on Daniel is with history and has one of the best whiskey brain encyclopedias I've ever seen. So just wanted to point one thing out for your future reference. With silent spirit, the people that rallied against the Coffey still were the Dublin Distilleries (Powers were one of them, which you correctly said, and also George Roe and Jameson's both William and John)... Redbreast was just a whiskey bonder owned by Gilbeys that didn't come about until 1903, but, the "Truths About Whisky" was published in 1878. Midleton Very Rare only came out in 1984. That being said, in the 1800s Cork Distillers, had a brand called Midleton Whisky (without the E), but it was considered "Country Whisky". It wasn't part of the Dublin Whiskey consortium that published the Truths About Whiskey and rallied for the abomination of high proof grain (silent spirit). Anyway, you guys are awesome!!! Keep cranking great videos... Love your work, and excuse the little correction, but knowing how much you seem to love your history, I figured you'd prefer the facts.
@@DasFlashyMan I think that Bushmills has an ultra light, hydrated character to it that makes it a really tasty mixer in Irish coffees and things. Have literally diluted Green Spot with Bushmills to good effect in cocktails, lol.

Also speaking of whiskey of the irish variety, my lady got me a bottle of whiskey for my birthday recently. I'd been eyeballing it bc of the fancy bottle for a while. I was not at all expecting on the inside. It was irish, but I kept going back to it to sip it again, there was something so dark, musty, funky and wonderful about it I was amazed it was irish, aside from that signature irish applyness in the open. Would buy it again anytime and it's called the Sexton. Hope you guys can keep it at sometime
My wife and I had the pleasure of touring Dingle distillery, it’s good that you point out the amount of whiskey distilled. We had the chance to meet the owners and their business model is quality not quantity. They are artist for sure! Their barrels are sold out for the next three batches! That’s how good it is! If in Ireland it’s a must visit to this little distillery! I’m not a vodka drinker but they also do Vodka and Gin well!
When you’re in Ireland this summer try to fit in a trip to Dingle. Dingle and the area around it is my favourite place in the country, coming from a Dub. Tried to visit the distillery when I was there in May but it was booked out.
I went to the Dingle distillery last week. I am guessing this video came up in my feed based on my internet searches. Cool channel, I will be definitely watching more videos. I was able to try Dingle Batch 3 at Dick Macks, I really liked it, but I am probably biased given my surname. My wife was able to negotiate the purchase of a bottle of Dingle Batch 2. It is also really good. I hope to be able to try batch 4 someday.

It's funny, not only have some whisk(e)y producers often said "we're the only ones who do it right" or "the only way to make whisk(e)y is..." but some whiskey tubers have had the exact same attitude (one even went so far as to declare "the end of traditional whisky reviews" insists that HE is the only true whisky reviewer) and snubbed others who do things with more humor and joviality. Those who don't know whisk(e)y history are doomed to repeat it.
Yeah, that's a BS attitude. I love the plethora of whisky tubers and opinions out there and the variety of opinions and personalities. No one is "wrong" about their opinion or personality/attitude towards reviewing.
One of the nice aspects of Irish whiskey is that the triple distillation gives such a nice, light profile that even the entry-level expressions are decent sippers. For instance, Bushmills Redbush is available in my area for $22. I can’t think of a similar scotch at that price point that would be as enjoyable. I grant you that Redbush isn’t complex, but nobody buys at that price point expecting to get complexity. Good show, guys.

A few months ago a close friend of mine was telling me that blended scotches were superior to single malts. I am I correct in thinking that this used to be a commonly held belief but in the past decades single malt has become more popular than it once was?
I will happily work to run a page like that, where things are sourced from. My current spreadsheets of whisk(e)y I have personally tried already list the owners of the distilleries (which conglomerate) and if they are sourced from somewhere else like MGP. We can probably add mashbills as well if known.
Was that Powers 12 year the John’s Lane release, old bottle??? I ask because the John’s Lane old bottle on the front says “Iberian Oak“, and the box states Oloroso sherry butts, and once a bit of oxidation sets in (as the low level implies), the flavor confirms. The new John’s Lane release comes in their comically mixing lid-themed blend bottle, and makes no mention of Sherry whatsoever. Its color therefore suggests a lot of E-150 caramel colorant. Dingle single malt is up to a fifth batch, four single pot still versions, and all with 500 bottle cask strength releases, but still no age statements.
I recently discovered Whiskey Vault, and I have enjoyed all the videos I have watched so far. There is not a large selection of whiskys/whiskies where I am from. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to find a larger selection, whether online or in the Pittsburgh, PA area?

Hey Bastards, please reach for a dram of your favorite libation in memory of my father in law who passed on Sunday (March 17). Mark Watson was a kind soul that was so much larger than life he wasn't allowed to stick around. Mark had a very quick battle with pancreatic cancer and has left a big hole in our hearts. So cheers to him at the tender young age of 67.
Man the problem I'm finding is Powers 12 yr is practically unattainable now. I can't find it at all in any store. Looks like I might have to try Bushmills Black Bush. At least I can easily get it.
I know this a year ago but the one thing you missed on the tragic history of Irish whiskey is you is the fact that when Ireland left the commonwealth in 1949, we lost access to the commonwealth market. Otherwise, great job... Oh & Powers 12 John's Lane is magnificent. 🙂👌🏼
There is a SWS bottle of bushmills 15 year old here in Canada. Does that mean it is a Single Malt Bushmills? If so, is that rare? And do you think it would be worth the 300? Seeing how i can get other 20+ year from SWS for for 200-300 I'm not so sure..
I assume that's 300 Canadian, not sure of the exchange rate but that price seems a bit outrageous as I just recently bought a bottle of Bushmills single malt 21 for $175 US. The 10 can be had for around $100.
You should try get your hands on some of the single cask releases from Redbreast. For example; the friend at hand - Belfast, the palace bar - temple bar, the loop exclusive (Dublin airport), Sonny molloys- Galway. That’s just a few to mention which are favorites of many a whiskey drinker at home here. I’d be happy to help you acquire these if you’d like to get in touch. Alternatively, if you’re ever in Ireland and want to see some serious whiskeys bars / distilleries and have “ the Craic” ( as we say) , look me up, I’d be happy to help. All the best. Bushmills Black Bush is seriously under-rated. it has a lot of nice dark fruit notes to be enjoyed...almost a scotch but without any peat(thinking Highland Park). too bad they glanced over it so fast.
The closest thing I can think of, off the top of my head, is Adelphi's international blend series. - "The Glover", which blends Scotch Malt and Japanese Malt. - "The Winter Queen", is two Scotches and a malt from Zuidam Distillery in the Netherlands. - "The Kincardine"/"The E&K", is two Scotches and an Amrut from India. As they are blending different malts, I'm not sure that really fits what you were thinking, but it's the closest I can think of. You might also consider the Canadian whisky style...which takes individual grain distillate and then blends them together after aging (some will blend the spirits before aging, or who age, blend, and age some more). Again, not exactly what you're thinking of, but perhaps close-ish.
Vikre Distillery out of Duluth, MN has a blend that is a mix of Scotch, Rye, and Bourbon - I am more than half tempted to send a bottle of it to the Vault to see what Daniel can do with it as far as picking out the different components.
Just remembered...Little Book Volume 2 is a blend of Kentucky Straight Rye, Canadian Whisky and Canadian Rye. Not sure it's a big stretch for blending together, but technically it would be a cross-style blend.
Spices have a shelf life not because they rot, but because their aromatic properties fade over time. However, good dried spices should still last a year or more. 100 might be a bit overboard, so I would recommend starting with the classics: black pepper, chile peppers, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, star anise, cardamom, turmeric, mustard, and cumin. Get them whole if you can. Toasting them in a dry pan will bring out even more spice notes but they won't last as long. Source: culinary school
Rich oily viscous sweetness with spicy bold undertones. Yeah that is the BEST description of whiskey I haveEVER heard. I love love Whiskey. I used to be a tequila guy. ( still am ) but I have overtime grown to just love the richness of a good solid whiskey. It’s just a real pleasure to have that “ rich oily viscous sweet burn “ it’s a richness that makes me so satisfied. It’s a Richness that’s different from tequila. I love tequila aged. A good reposado is hard to beat. I guess it’s really apples & oranges. All good. All liquor to get ya going Ya means son?

I thought about a sortable database on whiskey with as much information as possible. Sourcing would be cool, mash bills if possible, and I wanted to have some tasting notes. Unfortunately, I don't have the web development skills to make that work.
BlackBush is Malt whiskey mixed with Grain Whiskey, not a pot still whiskey, malt is originally distilled in pot stills but made with 100% malted barley and added grain whiskey made with corn and malted barley distilled in continuous stills, so it's not slightly malty but very malty for the blend, in fact it is 80% of malt and 20% of grain whiskey matured for roughly 8 years , so if you mix selection of malt whiskey (in these case malt whiskey from different barrels) and grain spirit it's not whiskey, it has to be grain whiskey (in Ireland, grain new make spirit matured for minimum 3 years, same as malt new make by the way) to be mixed with other one to be called whiskey. 40% is minimum strength of whiskey giving you enough flavour, and yes more strength gives you more flavour, how many people can handle that? I can lol in Ireland we have a malt whiskey, original and oldest type of whiskey, hence the message that barely is a king of the grain especially malted and yes you are right taxation made Ireland to go and look another solution, that's why they came with combining malt and barley- pure pat still, and you mentioned the guy who invented grain distillation which was a game changer for Irish and Scotch whisky production, not saying cheaper is better...

It's worth noting that spices do expire when exposed to air. If you open the jars frequently, or the containers aren't airtight, they will lose their aroma and flavor after 6 months, give or take.
Can you guys talk about flavor notes again? Maybe could be a topic on a tribe video? Over on the FB group, this comes up from time to time, where someone posts that they don't get many flavor notes (which is totally valid) and lots of people jump in saying that they don't either, and that further, they think that people are simply making up the flavor notes, or making whisky complicated for no reason. Some say that "it's all in your mind" but of course it's all in your mind. Whisky is like 4 ingredients. There aren't tropical fruits or fresh baked cinnamon rolls in my whisky, but sometimes I taste it or smell it.

Not in the Scotch sense since it contains a fraction of unmalted barley, but it does come from a single distillery and is made with only barley grain. In Scotland it would have to be called single grain (but no one would do that since barley is more expensive than corn/wheat).
At the Irish tasting I did on Saturday we got to talking a bit about the different distilling styles. When talking about the column still verse pot still, I used the word congeners and how that affects the flavour profile of the whiskey. For some reason half the table started laughing. Apparently it is a funny sounding word. Everyone seemed to think it belonged in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I do think whisky carries a little magic, so perhaps we're on to something.
The founder of Dingle is concerned with the fact that people are buying Dingle to flip it in 2nd hand market. Not enough people are actually drinking it, hence poor amount of reviews of it. Which is a shame, as for a young whiskey it's decent stuff. I have a bottle of batch 2 and I found it hot to begin with but after opening up for a few weeks it tasted much better and doesn't taste like any other irish i've had - tastes like barn in a good way!
If you get the spices their aromatics will degrade over time. Particularly pre ground spices. Its always better to get whole spices and put them in closed containers where they are not exposed to light. Even then the shelf life is finite
Spices get stale rather quickly in fact, ground spices even more so. They'll remain safe to eat ~forever, just less and less fragrant. If you want to keep them fresh for longer, it's best to keep them in a freezer, but you'll want to keep a small sample of each at room temperature, since cold spices (just like cold whisky...) will have a much more subdued smell. Or you could just buy small essential oil vials designed for smell training, though that can get quite expensive.
yeah, single malt very less common than Scotch... or maybe the whiskey on the past was just malt whiskey? and yes Bushmillis produce that type of whiskey for more than 400 years... but it's not Scotch... maybe because it was made there before Scotch? in the past it was the same Kingdom on the more than two islands, very closely related... those clans ware related more than rest of the world
I work in the food industry. Spices so have a shelf life for smelling also. They basically lose it's potency. Your best possible bet is to send me samples of everything you try. My highly trained food pallet will transfer to whisk(e)y very well. Please contact me for my information to start sending me those samples. This will purely be for science and of course the pweeble.

Regular Bushmill's is solid for the twenty bucks it costs for a bottle too. Nothing special but it's a perfectly fine bottle of whiskey.

Did Rex really reference Highlander without singing Queen? I feel cheated
There is a SWS bottle of bushmills 15 year old here in Canada. Does that mean it is a Single Malt Bushmills? If so, is that rare? And do you think it would be worth the 300? Seeing how i can get other 20+ year from SWS for for 200-300 I'm not so sure..
I assume that's 300 Canadian, not sure of the exchange rate but that price seems a bit outrageous as I just recently bought a bottle of Bushmills single malt 21 for $175 US. The 10 can be had for around $100.
You should try get your hands on some of the single cask releases from Redbreast. For example; the friend at hand - Belfast, the palace bar - temple bar, the loop exclusive (Dublin airport), Sonny molloys- Galway. That’s just a few to mention which are favorites of many a whiskey drinker at home here. I’d be happy to help you acquire these if you’d like to get in touch. Alternatively, if you’re ever in Ireland and want to see some serious whiskeys bars / distilleries and have “ the Craic” ( as we say) , look me up, I’d be happy to help. All the best. If you every have the chance to visit Dingle and go to the distillery, you should. It is such great town and the whiskey is fantastic!

Bushmills Black Bush is seriously under-rated. it has a lot of nice dark fruit notes to be enjoyed...almost a scotch but without any peat(thinking Highland Park). too bad they glanced over it so fast.

Are there any whiskeys you are aware of that do cross blending? So blending scotch with irish or bourbon etc etc...
The closest thing I can think of, off the top of my head, is Adelphi's international blend series.
- "The Glover", which blends Scotch Malt and Japanese Malt.
- "The Winter Queen", is two Scotches and a malt from Zuidam Distillery in the Netherlands.
- "The Kincardine"/"The E&K", is two Scotches and an Amrut from India.
As they are blending different malts, I'm not sure that really fits what you were thinking, but it's the closest I can think of.
You might also consider the Canadian whisky style...which takes individual grain distillate and then blends them together after aging (some will blend the spirits before aging, or who age, blend, and age some more). Again, not exactly what you're thinking of, but perhaps close-ish.
Vikre Distillery out of Duluth, MN has a blend that is a mix of Scotch, Rye, and Bourbon - I am more than half tempted to send a bottle of it to the Vault to see what Daniel can do with it as far as picking out the different components.
Just remembered...Little Book Volume 2 is a blend of Kentucky Straight Rye, Canadian Whisky and Canadian Rye. Not sure it's a big stretch for blending together, but technically it would be a cross-style blend.

Spices have a shelf life not because they rot, but because their aromatic properties fade over time. However, good dried spices should still last a year or more. 100 might be a bit overboard, so I would recommend starting with the classics: black pepper, chile peppers, allspice, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, star anise, cardamom, turmeric, mustard, and cumin. Get them whole if you can. Toasting them in a dry pan will bring out even more spice notes but they won't last as long.

Rich oily viscous sweetness with spicy bold undertones. Yeah that is the BEST description of whiskey I haveEVER heard. I love love Whiskey. I used to be a tequila guy. ( still am ) but I have overtime grown to just love the richness of a good solid whiskey. It’s just a real pleasure to have that “ rich oily viscous sweet burn “ it’s a richness that makes me so satisfied. It’s a Richness that’s different from tequila. I love tequila aged. A good reposado is hard to beat. I guess it’s really apples

iceman ice You can’t go wrong with Monkey Shoulder. Incredibly smooth. Not very fruity, but it’s all cream and vanilla and is a great gateway into scotch!

I thought about a sortable database on whiskey with as much information as possible. Sourcing would be cool, mash bills if possible, and I wanted to have some tasting notes. Unfortunately, I don't have the web development skills to make that work.
Dingle is my favorite part of Ireland. Surprised you didn’t get black pepper from the Powers, that’s kinda their hallmark.
BlackBush is Malt whiskey mixed with Grain Whiskey, not a pot still whiskey, malt is originally distilled in pot stills but made with 100% malted barley and added grain whiskey made with corn and malted barley distilled in continuous stills, so it's not slightly malty but very malty for the blend, in fact it is 80% of malt and 20% of grain whiskey matured for roughly 8 years , so if you mix selection of malt whiskey (in these case malt whiskey from different barrels) and grain spirit it's not whiskey, it has to be grain whiskey (in Ireland, grain new make spirit matured for minimum 3 years, same as malt new make by the way) to be mixed with other one to be called whiskey. 40% is minimum strength of whiskey giving you enough flavour, and yes more strength gives you more flavour, how many people can handle that? I can lol in Ireland we have a malt whiskey, original and oldest type of whiskey, hence the message that barely is a king of the grain especially malted and yes you are right taxation made Ireland to go and look another solution, that's why they came with combining malt and barley- pure pat still, and you mentioned the guy who invented grain distillation which was a game changer for Irish and Scotch whisky production, not saying cheaper is better...
And you guys TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELVES! thanks for going back to Irish whiskey the day after the Holiday.. great review, but there are better Irish whiskeys out there.
It's worth noting that spices do expire when exposed to air. If you open the jars frequently, or the containers aren't airtight, they will lose their aroma and flavor after 6 months, give or take.

Redbreast cask strength
Also Connemara makes a cask strength, but it is not easy to find and it is peated, so not typical Irish.
Teeling has several that, even if they aren't cask strength, they are at least high proof. Their Stout Cask finish clocks in around 49%, I believe.

Can you guys talk about flavor notes again? Maybe could be a topic on a tribe video? Over on the FB group, this comes up from time to time, where someone posts that they don't get many flavor notes (which is totally valid) and lots of people jump in saying that they don't either, and that further, they think that people are simply making up the flavor notes, or making whisky complicated for no reason. Some say that "it's all in your mind" but of course it's all in your mind. Whisky is like 4 ingredients. There aren't tropical fruits or fresh baked cinnamon rolls in my whisky, but sometimes I taste it or smell it.

oh wow, there is not enough selection of Irish whiskey... after history lesson telling us it was a long time which could destroy Irish whiskey all of the sudden there is not enough traditional whiskey in Ireland, I remember sitting in Bushmills and talking about only 3 distillers survived bad time, which I was referring to Bushmills and Midleton, so pleas refresh my memory what is Dingle and when was reopen? not saying that they produce a good whiskey

Is single pot still whiskey single malt?
Not in the Scotch sense since it contains a fraction of unmalted barley, but it does come from a single distillery and is made with only barley grain. In Scotland it would have to be called single grain (but no one would do that since barley is more expensive than corn/wheat).

At the Irish tasting I did on Saturday we got to talking a bit about the different distilling styles. When talking about the column still verse pot still, I used the word congeners and how that affects the flavour profile of the whiskey. For some reason half the table started laughing. Apparently it is a funny sounding word. Everyone seemed to think it belonged in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
I do think whisky carries a little magic, so perhaps we're on to something.
The founder of Dingle is concerned with the fact that people are buying Dingle to flip it in 2nd hand market. Not enough people are actually drinking it, hence poor amount of reviews of it. Which is a shame, as for a young whiskey it's decent stuff. I have a bottle of batch 2 and I found it hot to begin with but after opening up for a few weeks it tasted much better and doesn't taste like any other irish i've had - tastes like barn in a good way!
My parents also celebrated 60 years together before Dad died in 2005.

If you get the spices their aromatics will degrade over time. Particularly pre ground spices. Its always better to get whole spices and put them in closed containers where they are not exposed to light. Even then the shelf life is finite

Spices get stale rather quickly in fact, ground spices even more so. They'll remain safe to eat ~forever, just less and less fragrant. If you want to keep them fresh for longer, it's best to keep them in a freezer, but you'll want to keep a small sample of each at room temperature, since cold spices (just like cold whisky...) will have a much more subdued smell.
Or you could just buy small essential oil vials designed for smell training, though that can get quite expensive.
Should check out 2 gingers. Last INDEPENDENT brewery in all of Ireland.

yeah, single malt very less common than Scotch... or maybe the whiskey on the past was just malt whiskey? and yes Bushmillis produce that type of whiskey for more than 400 years... but it's not Scotch... maybe because it was made there before Scotch? in the past it was the same Kingdom on the more than two islands, very closely related... those clans ware related more than rest of the world
