I remember being blown away by this game when it came out. Really impressive how much the developers were able to squeeze out of the NES at that point. A technical marvel, but also just a fun side-scrolling beat 'em up. By far the best Turtles game on the NES.
I am so with you, this is a great game. Level design, visuals, game play, and new moves makes it a win in my book. I never did own it as a kid, only rented it.
Love this game! To this day it's just odd that the box art cover has a Triceraton right smack in the middle but it NEVER makes an appearance in the game. 🤷♂️
Looking back on it, Konami's sprite artists really went all out on the variety of enemies! Many different foot soldiers and rock soldiers with different weapons!
@@edwardgaines6561 NES have a color change mechanism, so the same foot soldier sprites can be used to make several types of them. That saved lots of memories.

Such a classic. I got this one for Easter one year and played it until I could nearly do the entire game blindfolded. Easily the best Turtles game on the NES. You, sir, deserve a pizza for your work--and naturally, a great big COWABUNGA!
This is by far my favorite TMNT game! I remember the day my dad got this for me when I was in middle school, carefully removing the wrapper from the box. I cherished this game very much, to this day I still have it with all its contents.
I really enjoy this game. I go back and forth between Manhattan and Turtles In Time. The only thing I don’t like and Turtles In Time is that it’s the easiest TMNT Game and feels really short. Manhattan is more challenging and It has better enemy variations and Bosses. It also has the best level design of any of any TMNT Game.
Oh man, yeah this was one of the last games I got on the NES, and it was easily one of me and my friends favorites. We would actually beat it most times we played it, and generally by the skin of our teeth after all continues and dangling on our last few lives. lol
I remember receiving this game for Christmas in 1992. Even back then, this game was a challenge. There was no internet for me back then, so I had to rely on skill to make my way through this game. I eventually made it to Super Shredder and I remember using Leonardo to fight him. I relied heavily on Leonardo's whirlwind attack and eventually defeated him. I remember feeling very excited when I beat Shredder. He was one of the toughest bosses in this game next to Krang. It's been 30 years since I beat this game and I never had the drive to beat it again. This remains one of the few games I've only played all the way through once in my life.
It helped where you could do the special move even at one bar of health left without penalty where other beat-em ups would not let you do a special move if your health was at that point.
This was by far my favorite TMNT game of all time. I didn't own an NES myself, as I was strictly limited to 1/2 hour of electronics per day, meaning buying a game system would have been a poor investment of my very limited childhood funds. I always wanted to play this game when visiting friends or cousins who had it. I never managed to beat the game, but I got close once. My cousin and I got as far as Krang before we both ran out of continues, so the only boss I never fought was Super Shredder.
Dude my brother and I watched TMNT 1, 2, and even 3 on VHS so so SO many freakin times. We had the cartoons with the Turtles driving those like, flying cars that shot red and blue laser-like bullets and Crang and Beebop and Rock Steady are there, Baxter makes an appearance with his Mouzers and Raph threatens him with the line I’ll never forget for some reason “you’d better start talking or I’m gonna have to get sarcastic” lol born in ‘87 so it was the time for it. I got to see, tho unbeknownst to me, the exponential growth of the TMNTs popularity that sprung up in the early ‘90s and hardly slowed since.
The first TMNT game was released in Japan, but before the cartoon and toys were released there. Since it wouldn't have the name recognition, they renamed the game. By the time the arcade game and its Famicom port were released, TMNT had already debuted in Japan. So they decided to keep the TMNT name except they dropped the 2 (ala Square with "Final Fantasy II" and "Final Fantasy III" on the SNES).
I got this for my 13th birthday the year it came out. 30 years later, and I still know this game inside out and rock out to the elevator stage music in my inner soundtrack.
I'm so happy that you are doing this game! I LOVE this game! It should be acknowledged for how many achievements it pulled for an NES game: having four slightly different and unique playable characters, many long levels, great variety in enemies, and some great graphical tricks, such as the battleship slowly coming into view during the surfboard stage, the ascent into the sky, and the subway train, during the city-in-the-sky stage, and elevator stage. It also has a great soundtrack!
This game is amazing, I beat it a few months ago, and came to realize that the final stage has the same theme as "Starbase: where no turtle has gone before" from TMNT 4, and only then I realize that. Thanks for always being like a Saturday morning cartoon show for us!
I played the heck out of this game as a kid. I think it was one of the first NES games I bought new. This was also the game I found out about the Konami code (although it's slightly different). A neighbor came over one day and we played co-op. All of the sudden, we were in a different screen where we could select the level, get more lives, etc. I was like "What happened?" Then he told me about the code. He must have been very subtle, because I never saw or heard him push buttons. I even swore at the time he never moved his hands or fingers. Every time after that, he very obviously put in a code, but that first time I almost thought he just willed the screen to appear.
Man.. I've been with you since you've had very few subscribers and now look: you have almost 80k! Nice job. Good quality commentary and nostalgic games - great combo!
Loved this game. Only downside is you don't fight Bebop and Rocksteady (or Tokka & Rahzar) at the same time. Are those Nintendo Power scans? Raph had my favorite special attack.
Same problem with TMNT II: The Arcade Game. In the Arcade version, the parking lot level has both Bebop and Rocksteady as the boss fight, but in the NES version, it is a boss fight with the fly version of Baxter Stockman because the NES could not handle having both big sprites on the screen.
😲 wow. TMNT 3? This is totally left field. This is possibly one of the most st slept on games Konami ever made and knowing how your skills are, this is gonna be a treat. I did beat this. It's a well made game and it's better than the second game to me
Man, this really brings back some wonderful childhood memories. This game, along with the other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games of yesteryear, will be on that Konami compilation for modern platforms. Brings a smile to my face…
This is easily my favorite TMNT game of all time. I wish this game would've had an Arcade version like the TMNT 2 game did. So many cool bosses, Foot Soldiers, and stages. I love this game.
This is my favorite NES game next to Monster in my Pocket...it's truly a nostalgic masterpiece to me...it's possibly my favorite TMNT game even more over Turtles in Time but it's close.
Did anyone else notice that Super Shredder spends the entire time accepting and reacting to nut shots from regular attacks? He even holds his jewels as an animation.
Gotta love those generous invincibility frames that your turtle gets during the special move. I'm playing TMNT3 and struggling, but I'll have to give it another shot now that I know some of these techniques.
Fun fact about the box art -- it was taken from a similarly titled DOS title. That game had the Triceratons as enemies, and Casey Jones appears as an ally, but it didn't have the floating Manhattan Island. I admit, I stuck with Mikey the whole way through -- aside from his super move dealing the most damage per hit, it also allowed you to get out of being cornered, much like Raph's can. In Krang's second form, since both parts take damage, Mike's special can end that phase real quick if you time it to hit both parts.
I always enjoyed this game more than Turtles in Time. Fantastic video! I never owned it as a kid, but it was rented multiple times and thoroughly beaten.
Whenever I see the Turtles hanging on an edge of an area in the game, I am always reminded of that character from Between the Lions that is called Cliff Hanger and his little song, which goes, "Cliff Hanger, hanging from a cliff! And that's why he's called Cliff Hanger!"
Timing is so weird. They just announced a TMNT compilations pack coming soon which includes this game. Glad people will have a chance to try this game.
Just a tip that I wanted to share on fighting the rock soldiers that are carrying the steel/wooden beams: if you stand at the maximum range of your basic attack, you can hit them, and they can't reach you. Also, you can bait them into swinging the steel beams, and you can then slash at them when they are in the process of swinging.
I remember my dad spitting like $30 in quarters at this resort we went to on vacation, on the teenage mutant Ninja turtles arcade machine. Just so my brother and I can beat the game!!! TNMT holds a special place in my heart
Today something we NEVER saw coming is happening, the 4 NES games, the 2 SNES games, the 2 Sega Genesis games, the 3 Game Boy games AND the 2 Arcade games will be re-released in one big collection on all current platforms (Ps4/5, Xbox One/Series, Switch, and PC), this guide I'm pretty sure will help newcomers to the game when the collection is released for sure (the same goes to the previous 2 TMNT videos as well).
Quick correction: Our _TMNT1_ WAS released in Japan, but just under a different name. In Japan, for whatever reason, our _TMNT1_ was released as _Gekikame Ninja Den_ (literally _Fierce Turtle Ninja Legend_ ). Besides the language differences, for whatever reason, April O'Neill is Master Splinter's biological daughter in that version of the game. Anyway, great walkthrough as always!
This is the Ninja turtle game we WISHED we had in the 80's. We were all CRAZY for turtles back then but the first NES game was a nightmare for us little kids!
This was my first Turtles game I cleared as a kid, though it took me all continues and I barely beaten Super Shredder as Leo on my last life. Eventually I improved enough to clear the game in about an hour. One thing I really like in this game is the various ways the Foot Soldiers enter the screen - not just by walking from the sides, but also breaking glass, from the sewers, turning from statues, riding on balls... variety is good.
Thanks for doing this game! A favorite rental of mine when I was a kid. Local gas station (remember renting from the gas station?) had a small selection of about 24 NES games, and over time I rented them all. This one was probably the best. Though we co-oped the heck out of this game, we never quite beat it. Glad to see your playthrough, though! :)
Ah, now this was my go-to beat-em-up on the NES back in the day. Rented it once from a local video store (known then as Popcorn Video) and then got it the following Christmas~
Always loved this game. Love your content. Have been subscribed since the beginning. Found it interesting in this game that the points changed depending on how you killed an enemy. 400 for the throw attack and the jump kick. But 600 for a standard attack and only 200 if you finished an enemy with the special attack. Keep up the great content!
First game of my life..... it's was my brother's and my dream to complete....when i completed it solo .....i felt the joy which is incomparable.... whenever i am low i use mesen to play this game on my pc and poof pain goes away.... it's true love for me ❤
42:00, the robots that you mentioned here are actually called SAL Units and, in this game, they are bad guys that were once under the control of a scientist from an alien world that now work for the enemies of said scientist and they are after said alien scientist (who was essentially a human) that, ironically enough, also looks like them as well. His name is Professor (or Doctor, depending on the TMNT version) Honeycutt, but he is better known as Fugitoid, namely because he is a fugitive and that he is an android. His backstory is even more tragic, as these robots killed his family and he was the only survivor of sorts. However, in order to survive, he had to trap himself into his robotic companion named SAL.
Thanks for playing this, really appreciate what you're doing as it helps relieve the weekly stress. More power to you and your channel and keep on gaming :)
'I'm the king of the world! Oh no, wait, that's a different Leo.' 😂 Seriously, though, thank you for showing us strategies on how to beat TMNT III, especially since I never beat this game as a kid.
Hell yeah! I got to rent this game once and every SINGLE time I went to Blockbuster after that I would look for this game... Only to be snubbed by a box with no big case behind it every time... I finally bought the game and beat it about 10 years ago, and it was the single longest outstanding video game achievement of my life. I play it now with my kids and they love it! This is definitely the hardest of the 4 original Turtles game also, that one time I rented it, I got ALL THE WAY TO SHREDDER AND BEAT HIM!! .... only for him to escape and me to get a game over on the elevator, had to take the game back, and never saw it again (untill adulthood anyways!)
Every time I would visit or be visited by a friend who played nintendo as a kid, I would bust this badboy out and they would be in utter shock because nobody knew there was a 3rs turtles game until I showed it to them. Then it would be even better when we played it and they saw this one was the best by far. I still have it. Im thinking it may be my rarest NES game.
It's amazing that a game this old, on this platform is STILL better than many modern games.

since Turtles in time was released the same year, this one was criminally overlooked. Pretty solid turtles game.
It doesn't help that by this time NES was eclipsed by Sega Genesis and SNES.
Very solid game! 8 levels with sub-bosses in some of them.

For me, Manhattan Project is easily the best Turtles game on NES.
The best TMNT game ever.
I love the inclusion of the Nintendo Power Game Guide. I remember looking through the magazine while my parents shopped.
Love this game, and that second stage music is classic. I already hear it in my head
I never care about IGN's rankings, really. This game will always be a gem to me.
No exaggeration I watched TMNT 2 hundreds of times as a kid. I love the opening scene where everyone is eating pizza so much
"Eclectic!!" --Donatello 😆
I remember jump kicking for my life playing this one.
This guy is a hero, we need spread the word. Let's share this channel on reddit guys!
With shows like this how does regular tv even exist? This is the best show on RUclips !
Holy freaking balls I loved this game as a kid!!
This has become one of my favorite weekly shows. The relaxing, informative approach to these videos is really enjoyable.
Thanks for playing this, really appreciate what you're doing as it helps relieve the weekly stress. More power to you and your channel and keep on gaming :)
I remember beating this game back in the day. Very fun, wish I had bought it instead of renting it
When a foot soldier explodes, the sound effect sounds like "Tylenol!"
'I'm the king of the world! Oh no, wait, that's a different Leo.' 😂
Seriously, though, thank you for showing us strategies on how to beat TMNT III, especially since I never beat this game as a kid.
I was so expecting you to throw in "I cannot remember whether I threw a boomerang or not. It'll come back to me" or a similar joke.
With the Cowabunga Collection announced the other day I imagine all your NES Turtle guides are gonna come in handy.
**original 3 beat em Up's. The first TMNT is obviously harder lol.
LOVE this game. I always start losin lives around the floating island lol. Great video! Keep em rollin!
