I am so with you, this is a great game. Level design, visuals, game play, and new moves makes it a win in my book. I never did own it as a kid, only rented it.
Love this game! To this day it's just odd that the box art cover has a Triceraton right smack in the middle but it NEVER makes an appearance in the game. 🤷♂️
I remember being blown away by this game when it came out. Really impressive how much the developers were able to squeeze out of the NES at that point. A technical marvel, but also just a fun side-scrolling beat 'em up. By far the best Turtles game on the NES.
Looking back on it, Konami's sprite artists really went all out on the variety of enemies! Many different foot soldiers and rock soldiers with different weapons!
@@edwardgaines6561 NES have a color change mechanism, so the same foot soldier sprites can be used to make several types of them. That saved lots of memories.
UCBV doing this video this week was perfect timing as the TMNT Cowabunga Collection got announced today for all current consoles and this game is apart of that collection.
Such a classic. I got this one for Easter one year and played it until I could nearly do the entire game blindfolded. Easily the best Turtles game on the NES. You, sir, deserve a pizza for your work--and naturally, a great big COWABUNGA!
This is such a good channel, and I can’t even verbalize why. It’s not like YT lacks any LPs for every game known to man, but there’s something about this guy that brings me right back to 80s and 90s gaming.
Oh man, yeah this was one of the last games I got on the NES, and it was easily one of me and my friends favorites. We would actually beat it most times we played it, and generally by the skin of our teeth after all continues and dangling on our last few lives. lol
This is by far my favorite TMNT game! I remember the day my dad got this for me when I was in middle school, carefully removing the wrapper from the box. I cherished this game very much, to this day I still have it with all its contents.
I really enjoy this game. I go back and forth between Manhattan and Turtles In Time. The only thing I don’t like and Turtles In Time is that it’s the easiest TMNT Game and feels really short. Manhattan is more challenging and It has better enemy variations and Bosses. It also has the best level design of any of any TMNT Game.
I'm so happy that you are doing this game! I LOVE this game! It should be acknowledged for how many achievements it pulled for an NES game: having four slightly different and unique playable characters, many long levels, great variety in enemies, and some great graphical tricks, such as the battleship slowly coming into view during the surfboard stage, the ascent into the sky, and the subway train, during the city-in-the-sky stage, and elevator stage. It also has a great soundtrack!
I remember receiving this game for Christmas in 1992. Even back then, this game was a challenge. There was no internet for me back then, so I had to rely on skill to make my way through this game. I eventually made it to Super Shredder and I remember using Leonardo to fight him. I relied heavily on Leonardo's whirlwind attack and eventually defeated him. I remember feeling very excited when I beat Shredder. He was one of the toughest bosses in this game next to Krang. It's been 30 years since I beat this game and I never had the drive to beat it again. This remains one of the few games I've only played all the way through once in my life.
It helped where you could do the special move even at one bar of health left without penalty where other beat-em ups would not let you do a special move if your health was at that point.
Dude my brother and I watched TMNT 1, 2, and even 3 on VHS so so SO many freakin times. We had the cartoons with the Turtles driving those like, flying cars that shot red and blue laser-like bullets and Crang and Beebop and Rock Steady are there, Baxter makes an appearance with his Mouzers and Raph threatens him with the line I’ll never forget for some reason “you’d better start talking or I’m gonna have to get sarcastic” lol born in ‘87 so it was the time for it. I got to see, tho unbeknownst to me, the exponential growth of the TMNTs popularity that sprung up in the early ‘90s and hardly slowed since.
Man.. I've been with you since you've had very few subscribers and now look: you have almost 80k! Nice job. Good quality commentary and nostalgic games - great combo!
This was by far my favorite TMNT game of all time. I didn't own an NES myself, as I was strictly limited to 1/2 hour of electronics per day, meaning buying a game system would have been a poor investment of my very limited childhood funds. I always wanted to play this game when visiting friends or cousins who had it. I never managed to beat the game, but I got close once. My cousin and I got as far as Krang before we both ran out of continues, so the only boss I never fought was Super Shredder.
This is my favorite NES game next to Monster in my Pocket...it's truly a nostalgic masterpiece to me...it's possibly my favorite TMNT game even more over Turtles in Time but it's close.
Did anyone else notice that Super Shredder spends the entire time accepting and reacting to nut shots from regular attacks? He even holds his jewels as an animation.
This game is amazing, I beat it a few months ago, and came to realize that the final stage has the same theme as "Starbase: where no turtle has gone before" from TMNT 4, and only then I realize that. Thanks for always being like a Saturday morning cartoon show for us!
I got this for my 13th birthday the year it came out. 30 years later, and I still know this game inside out and rock out to the elevator stage music in my inner soundtrack.
I played this game a month ago, got to Leatherhead and I remembered why I could never beat this game. After watching this video I'm feeling like I can do this 😅 time to get back on the horse
I played the heck out of this game as a kid. I think it was one of the first NES games I bought new. This was also the game I found out about the Konami code (although it's slightly different). A neighbor came over one day and we played co-op. All of the sudden, we were in a different screen where we could select the level, get more lives, etc. I was like "What happened?" Then he told me about the code. He must have been very subtle, because I never saw or heard him push buttons. I even swore at the time he never moved his hands or fingers. Every time after that, he very obviously put in a code, but that first time I almost thought he just willed the screen to appear.
Gotta love those generous invincibility frames that your turtle gets during the special move. I'm playing TMNT3 and struggling, but I'll have to give it another shot now that I know some of these techniques.
Man, this really brings back some wonderful childhood memories. This game, along with the other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games of yesteryear, will be on that Konami compilation for modern platforms. Brings a smile to my face…
Thanks for doing this game! A favorite rental of mine when I was a kid. Local gas station (remember renting from the gas station?) had a small selection of about 24 NES games, and over time I rented them all. This one was probably the best. Though we co-oped the heck out of this game, we never quite beat it. Glad to see your playthrough, though! :)
The first TMNT game was released in Japan, but before the cartoon and toys were released there. Since it wouldn't have the name recognition, they renamed the game. By the time the arcade game and its Famicom port were released, TMNT had already debuted in Japan. So they decided to keep the TMNT name except they dropped the 2 (ala Square with "Final Fantasy II" and "Final Fantasy III" on the SNES).
Timing is so weird. They just announced a TMNT compilations pack coming soon which includes this game. Glad people will have a chance to try this game.
I always enjoyed this game more than Turtles in Time. Fantastic video! I never owned it as a kid, but it was rented multiple times and thoroughly beaten.

Quick correction: Our _TMNT1_ WAS released in Japan, but just under a different name. I have an asshole cousin who would "accidentally" bump the NES or unplug the outlet. He thought it was super funny. One day I was pretty far into a game of Ducktales when he "accidentally" unplugged the brick with his foot. I lost it and "accidentally" bumped his face with my fist a couple times. Fun fact about the box art -- it was taken from a similarly titled DOS title. That game had the Triceratons as enemies, and Casey Jones appears as an ally, but it didn't have the floating Manhattan Island. I admit, I stuck with Mikey the whole way through -- aside from his super move dealing the most damage per hit, it also allowed you to get out of being cornered, much like Raph's can. In Krang's second form, since both parts take damage, Mike's special can end that phase real quick if you time it to hit both parts.
yooo i was thinking the other day if you would ever play this game. me and my brother used to play this when we were kids its one of our favorte nes games
Ah, now this was my go-to beat-em-up on the NES back in the day. Rented it once from a local video store (known then as Popcorn Video) and then got it the following Christmas~
Just a tip that I wanted to share on fighting the rock soldiers that are carrying the steel/wooden beams: if you stand at the maximum range of your basic attack, you can hit them, and they can't reach you. Also, you can bait them into swinging the steel beams, and you can then slash at them when they are in the process of swinging.
You forgot to tell these ppl who didnt know but if it stand in the line of fire when he throws that manhole at you you can do a normal attack an it will smack the manhole back at him an kill him even an expert on this game should know that but i still love your vids an i will point out things you forget to tell ppl as you play
I love TMNT 3. I also love how you have that real sense of progression going from one level to another. So many different types of foot soldiers too.
I am so with you, this is a great game. Level design, visuals, game play, and new moves makes it a win in my book. I never did own it as a kid, only rented it.

"by far" ? All 3 are really fun and technically impressive for their time. I'd saw the Arcade game has the best aesthetics and soundtrack.
since Turtles in time was released the same year, this one was criminally overlooked. Pretty solid turtles game.
It doesn't help that by this time NES was eclipsed by Sega Genesis and SNES.
Very solid game! 8 levels with sub-bosses in some of them.
Yeah for some reason I don't even remember this game or have even played it.
unfortunately i didn't get snes, so the upside was this was the turtles beatemup I got.
