Chevy Trailblazer Won't Go Into Gear! - Shift Cable Bushing Replacement Guide

- Today I'm showing how to replace the shifter cable bushing on a Trailblazer. If your transmission won't go into drive, don't worry! It could be just as easy of a fix as this.
Great video! I had watched 10 or so and bought a Dorman 'pack' with 4 parts; 2 clear, and 2 orange. The directions said the clear/white were for Trailblazer; orange for Fords. I tried for 2 hours to get the white to work. Frustrated, I seized a beer (it's 101 in my back yard) and cranked up you tube, realized I had not seen yours, and settled in. This was a 3 minute revelation!!! ORANGE PARTS; Thank you! 5 minutes later I celebrated a completed job with another cold drink!
Haha! I just went through the same! Last time I put a clear one in it. Didn’t realize the old one was still in (after I bought a clear white set and the four piece with orange set). I put the orange one in and it fit and it shifts - took all but 3 mins LOL! If it’s not the right one it sure was easy to install, locked into place, so far doing it’s job, and beats the heck out of zip ties that broke randomly. Why didn’t I do this a long time ago lol
I too struggled with the white one, realized a piece of the old bushing was still connected, removed it and fought with the white piece again for another half hour or so. Frustrated with the lack of results I tried the clear piece and it took me all of 20 seconds. No C-Clamp needed. Just a flathead screwdriver to help seat the groove of the bushing into the shifter cable. It then snapped into the shifter arm without any problems at all. It restored the tightness of the gear shifter assembly when changing gears and works great.
What if it's stuck in reverse?
Just wanted to say thanks. When my bushing fell out, at first I freaked, and thought of no, the transmission has gone. But after watching your video, a short trip to the parts store, and within 2 hours, it was fixed as good as new. My cost was $16. Probably saved a bundle. I appreciate your help very very much.
😊😊
God bless you brother, you just saved my pockets from being extorted lol this was was literally my problem, clear and and simple explanation well distributed 🙌🏽
I’ve been having one of those weeks where stuff keeps happening. Including this exact problem on my ‘07 Trailblazer. Your vid saved me a lot of headache. Thanks for making this and for being clear and direct (that part number helped a lot too). Thanks again man!
Thanks for the help! I was stuck at the store and couldn't get out of park. Saw your video and was able to crawl under the car and reattach the shift cable with some duct tape I had in the car. Got the car home and picked up this part at O'Reilly's… simple easy fix!
This just happened to me and now i know how I can easily fix it. Best video about this I've seen so far. Thanks man.
Dude, you saved my but today! This was exactly my issue while backing out of my driveway today. TB started, went into Reverse but then would not go into Drive and in fact was able to move the Gear shift lever through all the positions without the transmission engaging at all. Then the shift lever totally locked up and wouldn't even budge When I shut the engine off to check my fault codes, It wouldn't start up again. The TB was in Neutral though the console indicated Reverse. I could hear the solenoid that engages the linkage, kick on etc., but my brakes were locked up in the sense that they would not budge when pushing on the brake pedal. I was able to push the TB into my parking spot. Consider me a new subscriber and thanks for your expertise and assistance. You saved me several hundred clams.
Exact same thing happened to me today, off to the auto parts store as soon as they open tomorrow.
This is by far the most helpful video I found on this topic. Thank you, Lucas.
Thank you so much for your helpful video!! My husband was ready to go buy a new car until I told him about your video!!! THANK YOU!!
Thank you for the positive feedback!
Sounds like you are a great wife.
Thank you! Oriellys didn't know what the part was, thank you for showing the part and package # Now I can make a living again!
Appreciate you taking the time to do this video, saved me a lot of hassle.
Thanks so much. Today is the second time this happened since seven years ago.
Wonderful video with a clear view and accurate description and instructions. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for mentioning that it's on the driver's side of the truck. None of the other videos I watched on this subject mention that. And thanks for taking the time to make and post this video!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
So I got to auto zone explaining what the problems is with my trailblazer and the guy was so cool. He sent me this link to your video and this was heaven..lol.yoir video answered all my problems
Worked like a charm except that I didn't follow your advice at first. I bought the exact product but the goofy instructions told me to use the OTHER rubber grommet (clear one for GMC), not the one you had used. I fought with it for 20 minutes and finally watched this video again and used this orange one. And yes, it didn't take 2 minutes with no tools required to put it together. Thank you!
I just fixed my friend’s trailblazer thanks to you! 🙌🏻🙏🏻 thank you so much for the video!!
Thank you so much for your time to show us how to fix the problem. God Bless Brother.
LOL I had no IDEA! I have been holding my Silverado's shifter in place with wire over to the frame for years. Stumbled across your post and I'm going NOW to get this kit.
Great! I got the exact dorman part you showed and had it done myself in 5 minutes
Oh my word the hottest humid day in Ohio......praise be to God for your video. I did it with lil sisters help lol ( she cranked the jack🤣). We were so excited !!!!! I'll be 60 in August and stoked I pulled this off!!!!
Thank you So much! Just got a free car because of this issue, little do they know it was a 20 dollar fix!!! You’re amazing
Ts broke on my birthday thought it was gon be expensive fixed it today the next day so thank you bro
Thanks so much! Got it fixed. Just had to knock out the old rusted bit... saved us a tow bill
You're a saint, good sir. Thank you so much
Good help. I went to autozone earlier today and they said they didn't have the part. Thanks to your video I was able to find a part now imma go back show it to their face
Thanks for this video - such an easy fix was seeming so difficult until I gave up and got the orange one lol
Life Saver! 🙏💫
Thank for the very informative video with great camera work on the part. :) I bought one of these, and the part is somewhat loose where it's supposed to attach to the little metal nub. definitely not firmly attached. perhaps mine is defective. At least with your video, I know I put it back on correctly. Perhaps it needs some tweaking. I'm sure some are better quality parts than others.
You just saved me big time. Thank you so much for the share, fixed the problem!
Thanks a million. Almost drove myself nuts trying to figure what the issue was
Yo great video.. it really helped... I thought it was the brake light sensor, but your video made me check under the truck first and.. bingo....
Thanks for posting!! just fixed it...was helpful you showing but also the part # too!
100% helpful thank you my good man
Holy exactly what I needed batman!
Thanks. Video helped me out of a tough spot. 😅
Thanks just fixed my problem and save me some money.
Thank you sir out of town with inlaws blazer and this happened thank you for the video
Worked like a charm thanks!
Am having that problem the button is stuck can't push it in your video made me feel a lot better should be easy to fix
Excellent video I just had mine fall apart today, I but I have one question. Why the hell would they use a plastic part like that knowing that it's going to break??? Well it lasted 16 years for me 2007, thanks for the video
Thanks for the video, so the orange pieces go on the opposite sides of each other? I saw one video where they put both orange pieces on the same side.
I hope you win the lottery or all your traffic lights are green man thank you so much!!!
Thanks , I fixed mine today .👍😀
Thanks saved me a ton
Glad to hear you saved money!
Wow thats it! My Dude tysm with that explanation!
Awesome brotha man thank you that's exactly what I needed
If you are gonna do a tutorial showing where you are working at would be helpful
Thanks- This was very helpful
Thanks god bless you
Huge help. Thanks
You Save my live brother. thanks
Would this be the same fix if it actually stuck in Reverse? Would you know also why my truck won't start aftr it got stuck in Reverse? T.y
The reason it won’t start after getting stuck in reverse is it’s a safety feature. The vehicle has to either be in neutral or park to start. If you crawl under the drivers side of the vehicle, you should be able to locate and see if the shift cable is connected. If it is popped off, replace the bushing. Is the gear selector able to be moved to park? Are you able select gears with the selector without the vehicle actually changing gears?
@@lucasmoore2178 Thank you for answering me first of all. Thank you so much. The shifter it self is actually in the parked position. The cluster panel read its still in Reverse. Now when stepping on the brakes, they are locked up too. The steering wheel isn't locked, just the brakes and shifter. And yeah, it won't turn on. Thank you for your help. If you are able to answer me soon, Ima have to go under..
It is highly likely that the shift cable is not attached.
Thanks Brother .👍👍👍
How do you access the cable ? Do i need to jack the car up ?
I had my husband watch this cause I couldn't get the cap on right but thank you!
Im happy the video helped, thanks for the feedback!
Lifesaver Thank you
You rock!!
I wonder if you put the orange on the nipple first then the black cable over the top, then press in the final button
I’ll let you know
I just bought a trailblazer and drove it home after making multiple stops. I pulled it in the garage to clean it out and when I tried to take it out it did this same thing. Hopefully thats all thats wrong with it but so far its not looking good lol
you’re so clutch
FYI, that was the wrong bushing. The package comes with little clear ones and little orange ones. The rod side should have been one of the little clear.ones, those grab the rod better. They are a pain to push in, use lubricant. The smaller orange one comes.in from the other side of the cable and compresses the clear one more so it really grabs the rod.
Doing it your way, the orange one on the rod side could pop off the rod causing the same.issue again.
I'm experiencing the same problem with the Mazda 3 that I just bought off of my girlfriend's daughter, she said it's acting like there's no play from year to year when she sifts out of park too many gear and I know for a fact that it's exactly the shifter arm linkage like you're describing but let me ask you this, if for some ironic crazy bizarre reason that wouldn't be the problem even though I'm pretty sure it is, what else could it be
Where can I buy that repair kit , I have exactly the same issue??
Guess if it fits you saved me also an arm and leg, I live in Philippines
I have same issue !!!!!
My problem is the part that held the coupling broken from the cable
Ya the orange parts are for the Chevy the clear parts in the package are Ford.
Thank you
Mr Lycas. 1 or 2 don't work . how we can fix?
I brought the Dorman 14057 bushing. Parts went together as they should but the shifter came back off later the same day WHY?
I believe both parts go in from the passenger side of the vehicle
I have that issue with being stuck in park however when I crawled under vehicle my arm was still attached. I was excited that it was most likely an easy fix until then. Thought I'd crawl under and see it disconnected. Any ideas where ther problem could be
Sounds like you might have broken the shift cable, or have an ignition safety problem.
You've probably gotten it figured out since it's been a month, but if not then there could be a chance of having a problem at the end of the cable that attaches to the shifter. You'll have to take the center console apart to get at it though.
I just bought this part for my 2006 trailblazer. The instructions say the fat end is supposed to go to the outside instead of the inside then you push the cap on the fat end. Is there different instructions for the trailblazer somewhere?
If you are installing this on a trailblazer follow the instructions on this video. The part is a universal part, so instructions may vary per vehicle.
@@lucasmoore2178 thanks
Thank u I almost got tricked into paying 200 dollars just for some damn buttons
Where is it located at on the car?
I See it’s on Driver side but any more specifics? I’m in a 03 Trailblazer
Do u have a video on replacing the bushing from inside the cab?
Lucas what parts should i buy same issue so i can inquire to the autoshop?
Dorman 14057. All it is is a bushing kit.
@@lucasmoore2178 ok thanks man so does it fit to my trailblazer LS 2009?
@@markkevinapalisok3680 Yes, it definitely should.
@@lucasmoore2178 my problem maybe it's cable broken i look under the car. Cable shifter. Here is the image
@@markkevinapalisok3680 If the cable is still connected, then it is most likely a snapped cable.
What's the part number for that ..
Anyone know how to do the final step I can’t get the shifter to lock in and stay there
Did you ever get this solved? I am having an issue that after so many shifts it falls right back off.
I thought I killed my car when I got this issue. Pretty dumb how a tiny piece of plastic can completely immobilize your car if it is gone.
What year is this trailblazer?
Its a 2004 Trailblazer LS
So I have a question... What if the shifter button won't press in?
The button wont press in if the shift cable fell off, because the transmission isnt really in park, its in some other gear. If you crawl under on the driver side and the lever on the side of the transmission isnt in park, that will prevent the shifter from being unlocked until it is actually put into park. Before checking make sure to engage the parking brake!
@@lucasmoore2178 thank you. I did the bushings yesterday and now it works. I do have a couple more questions for you if you don't mind?
@@summertrammel532 Ask as many questions as you would like. Glad to hear it worked!
@@lucasmoore2178 parking brake AND CHOCK THE WHEELS!!! or your truck will start driving without you in it like it did to me 😮
@@heroblok6 Good point!
P why is your screen acting all crazy like that
It’s just the refresh rate of the camera not picking up the screen properly.
"You need no tools for this..."
"I had to use clamps. "
Darn so close. Haha thanks for the info
Thanks alot for this video had an emergency and this fixed 🙌 my issue salute 🫡
Why didn't they use a not and bolt?
Why does the part package say it's for a Ford?
