UPDATE:
Seeing a lot of comments about the DVD Process being unnecessary! While it does work, there are other simplified methods. Here's some info I've gathered:
- Bottom line: You need some device to play your final clean video that will attach to your VCR. So "X device" ----> s-video or composite to VCR. X device = A converter box, a PS3, a Wii, etc.
- You can also do this with a PC: such as an HDMI to RCA converter. Also a PCIe card that outputs S-VIDEO or composite straight to the VCR. I don't like this PC method in general because one time I did it and it produced literal "off-colored" results. But people have sworn by it and I think it's worth a shot.
I've also read in the comments about finishing in 60fps. This happens AFTER you capture the VHS video as it automatically comes in at 29.97. But the idea is to "deinterlace" your VHS capture and double the frame rate which gives a smoother look. The problem is RUclips doesn't read this "deinterlaced" footage unless there's more steps. Here's a tutorial I used on how to do it that maybe some of you will understand: ruclips.net/video/sn_TDa9zY1c/видео.html
I do have a question. Is there a reason you haven’t went with the FireWire route? I also love analog video and collect camcorders so while this video was interesting just wanted to know your thoughts on the method.
@@clarksters88 Not sure about the "firewire method" but there's a section in the video about using old camcorders. I used to do that all the time. I'd connect my analog camera into my capture card via composite (different from the one mentioned) and that would be connected to a firewire input PCIe card in my comp. But as I did more GFX and VFX, it was hard to make those composited elements appear VHS, and with lengthy import times (3hrs of shooting = 3hrs of importing) I moved away from it.
@@skycorphomevideo I got it. I was referring to using a Digital8 or DV camcorder to do direct analog to video bypassing
Just to clarify, the 59.94 framerate is only discarded by RUclips if you upload in 480p. RUclips heavily compresses 480p video to conserve space and likewise halves the frame rate for the same reason. Like I mentioned in the previous comment, I assume you capture natively in 1080p in that Hauppauge software. I used to use the same software with my old PVR and it also automatically deinterlaced the footage. That Hauppauge auto deinterlace resulting in the framerate being cut in half and really noticeable aliasing. If your capture was interlaced, you wouldn't get that jagged artifacting on diagonal lines.
In short, it's not a matter RUclips being able to read the deinterlace itself, but you'd have to capture at 480i in VirtualDub to manually deinterlace the footage with Yadif (also in VirtualDub) instead of letting the Hauppauge capture software do it automatically, and then resize it to 1080p in Premiere or Vegas to keep the double the frame rate visible on RUclips. Both options deinterlace the footage, but to make it smoother and have little aliasing you'd have to change your entire capture setup and process from the start. I think your Hauppauge should be compatible with either VirtualDub 1.9.11 or VirtualDub 2 if for some reason you wanted to test any of this out.
Didn't read too long 😎

WELL IN 1985 VCRS WERE 200 TO 400 DOLLARS IN STORES ❤
To make a totally digital VHS look and do it right, you have to separate the signal out not into RGB, but a color space that has the luminance separate from the two channels that encode the color. You have to limit these at significantly different bandwidths in comparision to each other and get the frequence response curves right then you have to throw in the right amount of noise for each component then thrown in some typical time-base error at the end. Also SVHS had greater resolution only in the lumincance while the color part had the same low resolution that VHS did, which is why the colors bled so badly on both formats.
@@gonelucid Just saying, if you want to do it digitally without using real VHS, you need to limit the bandwidth of the luminance to below 3 MHz and the color around 300 KHz and introduce the right amount of noise in each and the right amount of random time base error. A lot of people will just cut the resolution in RGB space then add some noise and artifacts and the luminance will have roughly the right amount of resolution compared to VHS but the color part of the signal will have way more resolution than VHS
@@3Cr15w311there's ntscqt that similates all sorts of ntsc vhs artifacts
They understand the 80s better
Analog NTSC video (such as from VHS) is actually 59.94 interlaced fields per second. Most video editors de-interlace it to 29.97 frames per second, which loses half of the motion smoothness, but with the right software you can convert it to 59.94 frames per second (close enough that RUclips recognizes it as 60fps). See the video "How to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video (NTSC)" for one way of doing it.
Been getting a lot of comments like this. Had no clue. Thank you for actually pointing me to a place to start! Hopefully I can get that smoothness in the new videos
Finally someone who actually knows how video works! Regarding the deinterlacing, I just deinterlace interlaced videos using Handbrake and it works just fine.
What about PAL VHS?
If you just shoot 60 progressive it's good enough. You'll end up with 60i in the end

I just want to say thank you. Not just for the nostalgia experience, but because you apply yourself to making it through a methodology and procedure that most wouldn't have the time or patience to learn and hone in because it's an outdated technique. I think people should keep learning how stuff like this was done back in the day, and to mix it with modern programs and techniques makes it even more alluring to learn imo. I hope someday I can apply this to my projects. God bless.

Jokes aside I REALLY appreciate this! I've been looking to do something like this for a future video and this has saved me the trouble from using those fake filters.
I love the style of VHS
Holy shit the amount of work and editing you put in your videos is insane. So much love for your content!!
I've always wondered how you did this so good. Thank you for sharing !
If I wanted to recreate the VHS look for a project, I would always use this method, although I recently found a modern way of recording the media to VHS by dragging the video file into a flash drive and plug that into a Blu-Ray player, then connect Composite or S-Video out of your Blu-ray player (if it supports it, mine does) and into the VCR. If you don't want to worry about DVD compression, try my method! It looks a lot cleaner (and 60p video files record perfectly onto VHS)!
Been getting a lot of recommendations to forego DVD for X method, and shoot 60p to get 60i VHS. Can't wait to try it out, thanks for the input

Very cool! I could tell you guys used real VHS tapes since the beginning, your commitment seriously pays off. There's actually a better way that I've used a few times before of getting the video footage into the VCR. You can buy a cheap PCI card with composite output so you can plug your computer directly into your VCR and just have it setup as a second monitor.
This is definitely still a great tutorial for many other people who would want to create their own videos with this format. Keep up the great work!
I was looking for this comment! The extra DVD step definitely seems unnecessary 😅
Please tell me more
@@Dave102693 Basically it just omits the DVD step entirely at 0:40 and goes straight to the VHS step of recording the video directly from the computer at 0:46
I was trying that with 8800 GTX and SVideo but got yellow tint. Do you need to make some changes in NVidia control panel, like PAL/NTSC etc? I am getting couple PAL options there (I am based in Europe FYI)
@@rzober89biologia Oh interesting, that's a good question. I've only used some old offbrand card with composite built in, so I'm not sure. I know there's options in the Nvidia control panel though to adjust the color, under "desktop color settings". That might help solve your problem, unless it's something else. I'm on NTSC 60hz so I use that, I think PAL is 50hz so if there's an option to switch to 50hz that might be good too.
I want to see a Joel Haver/SkyCorp collaboration video based solely on the fact that they both put out a tutorial for the thing that made them famous.

Thank you SkyCorp Home Video, thank you.
Thank you for your effort and time

Saw another comment, but +1 on the PS3 method. MPEG2 has really strong compression blocking meaning you're losing double the quality by using DVD as an intermediary, plus you have to constantly buy DVD's to burn to. That Hauppauge Capture Software also compresses it further and puts a horrible deinterlace filter on it resulting in really noticeable aliasing.
This isn't a bad thing though. Most people don't put that much thought or effort into transferring VHS tapes anyway, so the majority of VHS sourced videos on RUclips look pretty poor, meaning your method exactly replicates that style. If you valued quality in every step, you'd probably lose that same atmosphere and the clarity would probably make the digital camera footage and graphics more noticeable as a result. Amazing how small choices can have huge effects on how something looks.
I gotta admit, vhs quality is pretty charming.
Thank You, Ive made videos with both and I agree, the actaul analog footage is the way to go. I even tried really hard to make my own filter with layers built into it and its not bad but Idk if I will go that route again in the future. Its great to finally see something like this. love your vids man.
