  • Why is Liechtenstein a Country?
    Over 38,000 people live in a nation smaller than a city - around 62 square miles or 160 square kilometers, to be exact. It ranks as one of the top 10 smallest countries to carve itself out on our maps yet has one of the world's top 3 GDPs per capita. Doubly landlocked between Austria and Switzerland, the nation of Liechtenstein has no airport nor army, and its entire plot of land lies within the Alpine Region. So, how did this compact and peaceful principality even become a country of its own?...

    In short, after Napoleon's defeat there was a German Confederation of 39 states, in which Lichtenstein could build up its structure as a state. Later, neither Austria-Hungary nor the Third Reich sought to incorporate Lichtenstein.

      Actually the principal family had close ties with the Habsburgs and a close economic and monetary union with it.
      Only after WWI they switched to an economic and monetary union with Switzerland, though today Liechtenstein is actually closer bonded to the EU then to Switzerland, but for instance in sports, they are still close to Switzerland

    I’ve had the privilege to spend many a summer in Liechtenstein. A truly beautiful and blessed swathe of land nestled in an idyllic valley somewhere beyond St. Gallen (CH) and the Rhine, and which one can easily drive past and miss - quite literally - in a blink of an eye…
    Should you ever find yourself traveling between Switzerland and Austria (or vice versa) by train, car, motorcycle, or bicycle, be sure to visit the Fürstentum for a day or two (or even just a quick “Kaffeepause”)! It’s worth the memory!

    Liechtenstein was created by the Holy Roman emperor in order to give a certain prince imperial immediacy (not subject to any other ruler than the Holy Roman emperor) so they granted him the area around Vaduz (the present capital) but the name came from a castle in another part of Austria. Actually the princes of Liechtenstein resided almost exclusively either in Vienna or in palaces in other parts of the Habsburg dominions and they even didn't bother to ever go to the Vaduz area (present day Liechtenstein) until much much later. That's how I understand the history of this principality.

    It is telling, that the current Principality of Liechtenstein was so unimportant for the Liechtensteins themselves, that the first member of the family visited(!) the country only 100 years(!) after they acquired it. Most of the family's possesions were for centuries in Czechia and they eventually became one of the largest landholders in the country and one of the richest of the Czech noble families. The total area of their land holdings in Czechia was many times larger than the territory of the current Liechtenstein. They lost a large part of it after WWI during the land reform and the rest of it after WWII. The dispute ower this confiscation between the House of Liechtenstein and Czechia hasn't been settled to this day.

It is situated at the periphery of both the German Empire and the Austrian Empire, while backed up by neutral Switzerland from the other side. Another German speaking state could not have held its independence, however hard it had tried, simply because of being completely surrounded by one or two much larger empires.

He also protected young republicans in thier civil war keeping Prussia France England out of it was close to becoming a world war. Tsar Alexander III had war ships in rivers off coast of Atlantic Bering and Pacific Ocean s protecting Americas shores. At one time imperial Russia was an Allie our first allie. We both had issues with England. Notice common denominator is always England . We were friendly with Tehran and in 1953,Tehran was only democratic government in Middle East. Was a parliamentarian system. The shah was simply king in name only had no power whatsoever . Prime minister had the power. Than England asked USA to depose prime minister and his government installed shah who was far worse than pol pot. This was a free democratic society in this time. Imagine losing your freedom over night. Say one word you’re sent to jail or simply disappeared. Remember Argentina under pinachet and all citizens that went disappeared was on a far greater scale in Iran. Justctobgivecyou an idea where hate started festering for United States. UK is friendly with Iran while United States is enemy #1 all started in 1953 because Iran had a long border with USSR. John Dulles thought it would be a good idea to be there. 1953 you have generation after generation of Iranians brought up in thier culture the United States is the super villain. People just didn’t think Einstein’s theory of cause and effect. Every action has a just similar action in turn to action taken. We are now experiencing said actions worldwide. Don’t forget thank UK and USA they are equal partners in this endeavor. As they say the barbarians at the gate are getting louder…

    Surprised that Leichtenstein has survived independently so long, one would think one of her neighbors would have taken it over long ago. Perhaps one day it will be incorporated into another country.
    With prosperous Germany, next door, I wonder if the people of Leichtenstein would vote to become a German state if a referendum for it was available?

    Two pieces of nonsense on this video are
    (1) Unlike the map which shows a part of southern England to belong to the Frankish Empire, that empire never owned any part of the island of Britain.
    (2) The commentator horribly mispronounces the name of the country. It's not "Lick-ten-stine" but "Leekh-ten-shtine" (ch in German is pronounced the same as in Scottish "loch").

    • @yon8378
      @yon8378 5 месяцев назад

      'ch' in German
      has two pronunciations: one as in 'loch,' the other does not exist in any other language I know, so I cannot describe it here except to say that it's like in 'ich' ("I') in german. it is a very soft sound and it's the one that appliies to 'Lichtenstein.'
