- We compare two sports cars that share DNA - the BMW Z4 M40i and the new Toyota Supra Mk 5. These two-doors are highly related, sharing a chassis, three-litre turbo straight-six engine and an eight-speed ZF gearbox. But is the Toyota Supra any different to drive? Is it better? In this week’s video, Tom and the crew check out these deadly rivals: the new Supra, and its platform cousin, the BMW Z4.
I drove both and bought the Z4 M40i.I wanted a convertible also the tech inside was the best of any car I had.I also had the Lexus RCF in mind.I like the Lexus RCF over the Supra.Probably not as quick but I like the looks.

Fantastic review Tom. I think you explained the differences spot on. I've driven both and am inclined towards buying a Supra.
Thank you, Timur. We assessed the cars over about 1,200km to really isolate those differences. Both the Z4 and Supra accomplish highly - but I’m with you. I think the Toyota comes out on top.
Simon Wright I agree with you, Simon, but I think it’s important to get to how Toyota chose to differentiate the Supra, and the only way to do that is back-to-back against the relevant BMW. We’ll look at Supra vs M2 later on.

Based on the reviews I've read, Supra seems to be the better configured performance version of the twins If your not brand conscious, Supra would be the better value for money buy Awesome comparison review
That’s a good summary of the situation, I think. For me, I’d pocket the 30-40k AUD difference and take the Supra.

Great review Tom and agree we need these cars to exist - despite this I can see arguments for and against product/platform and component sharing and use of the Supra name but ultimately I think good outcomes achieved for both manufacturers here :)
Exactly! Once you reach the conclusion that the Supra probably wouldn’t have existed but for this partnership, it’s clear this is a great outcome.

I have a 2010 BMW Z4 with the twin turbo N54. I absolutely LOVE the hard top. SO if I were going to chose one of these cars it would be the Supra. I'm very disappointed that BMW went back to the soft top.

Same, though this is the clearest way to see how Toyota differentiated away from the BMW. The M2’s an older product now on a different platform... still an epic car though.
Numbers for power are manufacturers figures, actual figures are different for both cars.
Ok their similar under the skin but both different forms outside, comparing these two to one another is for me odd.
BMW use the B58 engine and ZF 8 speed in a number of their cars yet they don't compare them to each other why do people compare these two
Perhaps it’s because these two were paired for much of their engineering journey, and the fact they wouldn’t have existed without one another
They are one, but the Z4 has more character than the Zupra
There so much hate on the Internet on the supra they say the engine isn't reliable etc
This engine’s been around for a while and reliability seems fine, but we don’t have a crystal ball
Supra is 100x better looking.... really nailed the looks it was a shame they didn't have the brave pills to stick with the FT-1. I think that was why so many Toyota luvers got upset, the concept set a expectation that was never delivered. At the end of the day neither car is built by BMW or Toyota, yes the tech is BMW, but I don't think it matter's the B58 can handle 1000hp apparently, so if you want a daily with 500-600HP I guess it could manage it.... Today all car manufacturing is about lego building, just look at the VAG range....
Not BMW's gearbox, not BMW's tyres, not BMW's body..
Toyota's design, Toyotas's software, and Toyota's tune.
Toyota is basically offering us a WAY less pricey, hand-picked by, and hence amazing, Toyota package. Wake up guys!
Well, the gearbox is ZF with a mostly-BMW software tune. On the other points, you’re quite right. Which is why we made the same point about it being a far better value pick here.
Yeah... still u kinda dissed it. Toyota didn't do this for their own gains or anything, Toyota kinda surely did it for us, better than BMW ever cared to. Put them up on a pedestal and let good prevail over fail.

Strut bars needed even in hard top cars especially if the car is intended for the track. The Zupra is rubbish. Toyota exploited the fame of the name to gain more interest

The car is a gt, not a go kart. It's pretty good as it is. For it's class, and numbers, it's good on road and occasional track session. Some tests proved it already.

A typical Zupra butthurt fanboy. The car is sport not GT (apparently you don’t know the differences). Go study mechanic and car classification for 10 years then come to answer. The MK4 proved better in the track. This abomination and self exploited name will never be half good of the old MK4 and MK3 Supra

I couldn't agree more, however I am partial to the Supra. My favorite BMW is actually the M2 CS.
Just so that you know the Supra is not a rebadged Z4
If it was a rebadged Z4 then it would have looked EXTREMELY similar as well as handling similarly
However the design is drastically different as it is by Toyota and even though the car is built with the help of BMW, Toyota still made it their own car
So in a way the new Supra is a Toyota car

I Am a Japanese Car fan but the styling of this supra is so poor its really ugly !! the Z4 looks worse than the one before now but its soo much better looking than the supra !
Design is subjective, but I don’t think either of these cars are hugely beautiful - but I think the front end of the Z4 is a little awkward.

The design of the Supra is ugly and it has a ton of plastics
-The car is short, small, and midget.
-The car is built on a lie. It has Fake vents all over the body.
-It comes only with automatic (no fun).
-Complicated engine (rear timing chains, chained oil pump, plastic valvetronics, needs special tools).
-Heritage, this car has nothing. It’s built by a german company in Austria.
-The supra is just a copy. Z4 engine, Z4 transmission, chassis, suspension, interior, and tech.
It’s an abomination and a disgrace of TOYOTA’s history.
