The pop culture legend of what Beetlejuice is definitely warps the experience when you first see it. Like Silence of the Lambs you kinda assume he is the main character but he really just bumps into the main story
guys, if youre watching a Tim Burton movie and asking "this is weird, why is this happening" youre gonna miss the actual story. Tim Burton always makes the world weird in all his movies.

I've seen The Exorcist about 167 TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT!!!! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY!!!! Now do d'ya think? Ya think I'm qualified?
This entire monologue lived in my head rent free since I was a child. It cracked me up so much as a kid 😂 Also it's funny how Rana mentioned Keaton's voice for the Beetleguy, when the start of it has Keaton switch back seamlessly into his normal voice. The guy is hilariously talented.
The actor who plays Otho voices the Mayor of Halloweentown in the Nightmare Before Christmas. Sadly he has passed and at his funeral "Day O" was played.
The guy with the tiny head in the waiting room is dressed as a big game hunter or tropical explorer; he presumably encountered a hostile tribe of headhunters who killed him and shrank it. The woman with separate legs was likely a magician's assistant who got killed when a sawing-the-person-in-half trick went wrong.

Yeah definitely lost the authentic feel of their earlier reactions, these days it's clear they're just acting/reacting the way they expect reactors to behave and over analysing everything, a shame really given how great they used to be
It's not a far off notion that Beetleguise had a hand in making Goth culture mainstream for a while, before Emo culture took it's place. I remember my sister LOVED dressing like Lydia after seeing this film.
The character's proper name is spelled Betelgeuse, which is pronounced "beetle juice", but is actually the name of one of the brightest stars visible in Earth's sky. Maybe a fitting name since he sees himself as the star of the show.
Tim Burton had nothing to do with Coraline and he was only a producer on James and the Giant Peach 😂 Nightmare Before Christmas may be referred to as his, and he was a producer and definitely responsible for things like the concept, songs, and designs, but looking into it (watch the episode on it from The Movies that Made Us), it turns out he wasn’t as involved as it may seem, and his name was put on it for the recognition to bring people in. Sadly once again, Burton gets the credit when it should go to the director of all 3 *Henry Selick*
Tim Burton created the concept, storyline, designs, co-wrote most of the songs with Danny Elfman AND produced it, but sure, he was "only the producer" lol.
They need to get over that it's Michael Keaton 😂 Yes it's him, this is what he did, he's a bit nuts. Even his Bruce Wayne was unhinged, this is what he's like
His first (surprise) hit movie was Night Shift. Then this. Then his name was announced for Batman and every fan (but me) freaked out. And they all admitted they were wrong once Batman came out.
“So what, you die you have to live forever with your significant other in a house like this? There’s gotta be more to life…” THEY DON’T HAVE A LIFE. THEY ARE DEAD.
This comment is so unnecessary, but the cover of the Beetlejuice movie with Adam, Barbra, and BJ, makes them look like some weird, demented polyamorous couple.
I JUST noticed how active a father Charles Deetz actually is in Lydia's life. She expresses interest in her photography hobby, and her dad immediately offers to build her a dark room in the basement. 100% top tier dad-ing. :D
Fun fact: There was originally going to be a sequel called "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" with Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton returning and the script was created, but Tim Burton scrapped the project after losing interest in it
There was a cartoon made in the 90s about Beetlejuice. He wasn't an antagonist in the cartoon. He would go on adventures with Lydia. Theme song was good, someone made a dubstep remix of it that's also good. Also, you'd be surprised how well an old guy with shaky hands can still do what he spent his life doing. Just saying. I once got surgery from this old guy, the kind that you're awake for. Dude's hands were shaky when I met him when we shook hands. But during the surgery, his hands were solid. Kinda like the guy in Toy Story 2 that repairs Woody. Hands shaky while holding the needle, then once he gets to work it's perfection.
I'm not sure but i think Pat is autistic / mentally handicapped as he displays almost childlike behaviour when confronted with adult themes. I have not followed this channel for long so it may have been discussed at an earlier stage.
Rana's outfit is waaay too hot ❤❤! She wearing fishnet stockings makes this reaction to Beetlejuice so amazing. And it is funny to watch her struggles with her mini-skirt while trying not to miss something important from the movie.
So they say it, but not spell it out. When you die you are bound to a certain area important to your life, it can be land, building, whatever. If you go outside those boundaries you are sent to Saturn where there are sandworms that eat the undead. Also Lydia is so obsessed with death because her mother died and she wants to go to that side
When news came out that Michael Keaton was going to play batman the year later, people were skeptical that he would be a good fit because he was known for only playing comedic roles. People werent sure they could take him seriously. He surprised us all for Batman and Batman Returns.

It's cool how they don't reveal the main character until so long into the film. No need to rush. It's interesting, unique storybuilding you see moreso in books than movies
When I hear Rana say Barney is Fred Flintstone's brother, I KNOW I'm OLD!!!! Hahahaha!!! It's also funny to see them experience the reverse of what most people felt when we heard "Beetlejuice" was going to play Batman! Tim Burton's early films warmly embraced all the monsters and ghosts people were supposed to be scared of, but he shows their humanity (like in Edward Scissorhands). They also had lots of chaotic fun, like his 1st big hit, "Pee Wee's Great Adventure"!
Not to be mean to Rana, but she didn't know that due to general ignorance/assumption (pretty much what she's known for lol), not so much an age thing 😋
A funny thing about Beetlejuice, almost no one thought Michael Keaton was right for the part. However, Beetlejuice was his favorite character and he had a clear vision for the character. The face makeup and most of the lines were done by Keaton himself.
In the cartoon Lydia and Beetlejuice are best friends as if the whole forced marriage thing never happened. Beetlejuice didnt even wanna go through the marriage thing to begin with. He only did it so he don't get sucked into the pit of sandworms.
Beetlejuice doesn't show up for a long time, so ot makes sense the original name was going to be "Meet the Maitlands" but he really is the standout character and the name is way more memorable
No, that's not true. The script's title was "Betelgeuse," the character's name, but the execs at Geffen thought that was too high-brow (since it's the name of a star). They suggested the title "House Ghosts," which Tim Burton hated and scoffed, "I might as well call it 'Scared Sheetless'," which the execs loved. "Beetle Juice/Beetlejuice" [spelling it in a more mundane manner] was the compromise to still sort of suggest the character and "be accessible to the public."
If you go back and watch Michael Keaton movies again I think you’ll notice after watching this that he does go in and out of that gravely beetlejuice voice more than you realize. It’s softer and not as intense but it makes appearances.
Michael Keaton was originally a comedian, which is why he knocks this role out of the water. This wasn’t out his area of expertise then. That’s why people were so critical about him being casted as Batman, which he would later become one of the better actors to portray the caped crusader. This movie is the reason I won’t swerve for animals. I’ll slam on the brakes; I’ll do my best not to hit them. But I won’t swerve and run off the road.
You should definitely check out the musical if you have a chance! Unfortunately, it’s not on Broadway anymore, but it is touring! I personally can’t imagine anyone else besides Alex Brightman playing Beetlejuice, though.
33:30 onward -- The movie doesn't do a great job of explaining what's going on here; I didn't understand it fully myself until I read about it on Wiki. As you may have gathered, Otho is attempting to lead a seance, hoping to make Adam and Barbara appear to everyone. The problem is the spell he's reciting from the book isn't a seance -- it's an exorcism ritual. They were about to be sent to that horrible room that they saw in the underworld, which the janitor called "death for the dead". As for why Betelguese can't say his own name... I suspect it's the nature of the banishment spell he's under. It prevents him from saying it, so that he can't set himself free. And I'll admit that Tim Burton's vision of the afterlife in this film is awfully bleak and unenviable. Especially the bureaucracy. And it seems that Otho was right about one thing he said (at around 23:00) -- apparently, people who take their own lives really are cursed to become civil servants in the netherworld!
Young people watching this for the first time are always amazed how Alec Baldwin looks. There is a reason why in the film CLUELESS the term "Baldwin" means a male hottie!
Navi: the dress/skirt a creation of yours? Either way it’s awesome I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this movie… and already watched Beetlejuice 2 twice so far hehe You won't really see Jeffrey Jones (Charles) in the second movie due to his creepy real life legal issues. This movie is the reason I won’t swerve for animals. I’ll slam on the brakes; I’ll do my best not to hit them. But I won’t swerve and run off the road.
I think Pat and his partner need to have a conversation. 😂😂😂
Pat does a great job at reacting when in a small group like this!
Young people watching this for the first time are always amazed how Alec Baldwin looks. There is a reason why in the film CLUELESS the term "Baldwin" means a male hottie!
Navi: the dress/skirt a creation of yours? Either way it’s awesome
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this movie… and already watched Beetlejuice 2 twice so far hehe
You won't really see Jeffrey Jones (Charles) in the second movie due to his creepy real life legal issues.
PS: Great reaction!!
You guys are very enjoyable to watch, hope you do Beetlejuice Beetlejuice next!
😂little Stuart…. Stuart little.
That's true, the movie says it. As a living being, I refuse to see dead people and beings from other dimensions.
It's so funny to me that they liked the house renovations
