Martha Wayles Jefferson - A Vivid Personality

We don't have many of her letters -- or any images of her -- but Martha Wayles Jefferson still stands out as a vivid personality in the recollections of those who knew and remembered her.

It seems to me that Martha Jefferson had a tough and tart outer shell, but underneath she was a loving wife and mother. The loving part of her was only seen by her loved ones. I believe this because as President Jefferson was flattened with grief over her death.

And didn't people say that Martha and Thomas Jefferson's younger surviving daughter, Maria "Polly" Jefferson, was very much like her? I know they said that she greatly resembled her physically, but I'm not sure if that included personality similarities.
