George , this drought has been killing me , I am up in Northern NJ and it has been unseasonably hot with very little rain most of this spring. I normally could skip irrigation a week here and there due to rain but I have not been able to at all this season with these conditions. I do a light over-seed and topdressing every spring which took fairly well already but historically I have had more success in the autumn with more ambitious over-seeding. And with the intense heat and lack of rain likely persisting through the summer , I will def be holding off until then this year. Just got a notice about strict water restrictions as well. These conditions have not been ideal at all for for grass in general, even with proper irrigation i have been seeing the slight hint of some browning starting in places in the lawn (mostly the KBG) for the last couple weeks , which I usually do not see for another month or so from now. Even some cooler temps the next few days will be followed up by big heat again into the weekend and next week.
I know Alex, it’s been a tough spring, my baby kbg hasn’t even made it out of the pout phase and got slammed. At least we have this week to work with. Good luck 👍 Thanks for sharing
@@PrincessCutLawnCare such a shame these conditions , the tips , info and product recommendations from you and Ron had my lawn looking the best it had in years but we get this heat , drought and for me new strict water restrictions. The autumn i have historically had the best results anyway so i will undertake my big overseed project then. I have a question about grass-seed, i have used mostly Midnight KBG , my lawn is about 60% KBG and 40% PRG (trying to get it up to higher and high KBG percentage). The dark color is basically unrivaled with Midnight but it seems fragile even compared to other KBG varieties I have used , do you still use Midnight or do you recommend another brand ? I love KBG - how it fills in bare spots and the color but it definitely can be frustrating , extra susceptible to drought and disease , the seeds take forever to germinate & get beyond the pout and late to green up every season as well.
@@AlexBB77 Thats a great question, im honestly facing the same issues as you. This is my first season with 100% midnight kbg and still isn't fully matured and has many bare spots. There have been quite a few disease issues already so im debating to overseed mazama this fall for its disease resistance. Mazama is known for its shade tolerance and with shade tolerance usually comes disease resistance as they go hand in hand. Looking back at my reno i wish i would have used a kbg blend but oh well, its nothing we cant fix in the fall!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare thanks for all the info , i will look into Mazama if it is more hardy. Midnight's color is amazing but it is is definitely fragile even compared to other KBGs I have used in the past. My backyard is all PRG , so quick germination when I overseed and low maintenance in general but not near as nice looking as KBG when it is thriving.
@@SuperTA329 hey , thanks for the info , just saw this reply now. This season has been very rough up here , extremely hot and very dry pretty much all Spring, unusually so. I will definitely look into the Bluebank and congrats on the reno going well for you. I have used some local KBG mixes with smaller percentages of PRG mixed in the last few years along with the Midnight. But the Midnight does seem especially fragile even compared to other KBG's I have used. The Midnight color is awesome but not sure it is worth it with the fragility. So per George's and your recommendation I will be trying out the Mazama in September and will be looking into your Bluebank as well. Trying to overseed more and more with the pure KBG seeds in the front yard to get up to a higher percentage of KBG overall. PRG is good for the backyard at the moment for me - low hassle , quick germination and less fragility / issues , especially since I have been getting work done back there anyway. If i convert the backyard to KBG , I will probably do so over the next few seasons. But in the front nothing beats KBG (the look and color) as long as it is thriving and doing well , which definitely takes some extra work. Thanks again for the info.
