Great video and great content, George. Not loaded with BS minutia added just for the sake of hearing yourself talk. Straight and to the point, with great explanations. Thank you!! Still working up the nerve to try the Blue Def!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I appreciate your clear concise videos and especially your budget friendly tips. That blue def video got me thinking. I make plenty of urea. I'm healthy and not on any sort of medications like antibiotic that I wouldn't want to put on my lawn. I'll bet that if I filled one of those 1/2 gallon cranberry juice bottles with pure liquid gold, dumped in my 4 gal backpack sprayer filled the rest of the way with water, that would probably be a pretty good dilution.. I haven't tried it yet, but I have a feeling that's going to account for at least some of the nitrogen I supply to my lawn next year. One thing I do now is that when I clean the filters on my fish tanks I take that fish poop water and dump it on my azaleas and forsythias. They seem to absolutely love it.
You are right on time with this video! My lawn renovation starts tomorrow!! Also, don't forget about the Groundskeeper II rake for detaching. It's a back-saver for small to medium yards. Thanks again!!!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare First I went to the NTEP website you recommended and decided to go with a blend of Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass Midnight. Can't wait to bust out the groundskeeper II and the lawn leveling rake!
And the Groundskeeper II is hard to beat for raking in seed. On a budget, at least buy a SunJoe… unless your yard is microscopic dethatch inch with a rake isn’t worth it. I dethatch several times a month as well as verticut. Unless you have an older yard and low fertilizer inputs thatch is likely to be one of the most important focuses in any lawn and a rake would cost a fortune in lost time vs. a dethatcher.
George, i watch so many of these lawntube videos that its rare that i learn something new. Yet i got a couple of pearls of wisdom from you lately. 1 dont rototill because it makes your lawn lumpy and 2 use a misters to not wash away your seed. Great content! It helps a ton. Also jessy is bad ass. I fertalize with liquid urea. I learned it from one of his vids. Pretty cool company you keep. Jason and jessy. Lol
Going to try my first overseeding this fall. Using Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra seed, with Yard Mastery Starter fert. I’ll first scalp from 4” to 2”. Rake in seed. Watering 2 times a day will have to suffice. I work all day, no auto irrigation. Target date of September 30. Thanks for this video!
The Scott’s sun & shade seed is a really great “big box” option. A mix of kbg, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue. Can be cut low or to about three inches.
Just did my overseeding project this past Saturday 8/27. I am taking a chance with KBG but I sprayed the lawn with a plant growth regulator four days prior. I mowed on the lowest setting then scarified to get up the thatch. Then I switched to the dethatcher to put some grooves in the lawn. I also used hydretain after dropping the seed down. Wish me luck
Awesome video George! Lawn looks amazing at the end! I spent my morning dethatching my lawn. Pulled 8 bags of material out with the SunJoe, in the process of watering in the fertilizer I put down after dethatching
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Just dethatch. Might seed a few small spots that are thin from Fungus this past summer but even those are minimal and I think the starter fert I put down and frequent mowing will allow everything to thicken up nicely in a few weeks time
Protip for next year. I got that Scotts hand crank spreader for $5 on clearance at Walmart in late October of last year. It seems like they clearance out a bunch of lawn & garden stuff so they can make room for more Christmas stuff. The battery operated Scotts spreader gets horrible reviews however.. Ryobi make s 18V battery powered hand held spreader. I believe I paid $50 for it (tool only) Best $50 I ever spent! It is prety much my go to spreader. Most of what I spread goes down at about 4-5 pounds per 1,000sft The hopper easily holds 5 pounds of most product. I may have to stop and refill it often, but I can still cover my whole 5,000 sft yard in about 20-25 minutes. If you've already got Ryobi batteries this might be a good option for you!
Thank you so much for such a simple way of sharing your knowledge. I’m new to taking care of a yard and feel overwhelmed most of the time. I will definitely try this and hope to get the results you get. Thanks again!
I am really surprised you didn’t recommend Scott’s starter fert w/ tenacity. This stuff is a miracle worker for new grass and watching weeds turn white is sooooooooooo nice.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare great to hear was worried why you didn’t mention it. Just put some down with seed yesterday. Pro tip, do not get your kids a bouncy house with a water slide.
The Scotts Sun & Shade mix is no joke. I put a Perennial Rye in my front lawn cause it's highly sunny. It grew in patches. Nice and thick, but many patches which left place for weeds. But my backyard I used the sun & shade and it grew in so easily, it's the best part of my lawn.
Great video George! I never knew that about the sprinkler so that was a great tip.. I have to re seed an entire area of my lawn soon from the project last fall.. one area got bad fungus disease I think..and killed the grass in most of the area. So fall seeding again for me! Thankful for my big Gorilla Cart!
Great stuff George. I like to rent an aerator from Home Depot in early September and then drop my seed. Agree fully in your comments about the seed. I too am a fan of Scott’s brand, and have learned my lesson in the past about going cheap on the seed. Wound up with too many weeds! Thanks for the education as always!
You have 100% KBG don’t necessarily need to overseed unless you just want to introduce some PRG into the mix. Haven’t overseed in a couple years and KBG just spreads.
Perfect timing George my seed and fertilizer is in the garage and I've lowered my grass to 3/4 inch ready to overseed KBG next weekend what do you thing about sand leveling over the overseed? I'm really wanting to try that this year.
Another GREAT video. Thank you. I do have one question about the sprinkler you have listed. Some of the reviews on Amazon are concerning. I am a big fan of checking reviews before making a purchase. Have you had any issues and do you have any tips on using this sprinkler? ty
Great question, yes those reviews are true, the sprinkler is pretty much a one use type of deal, it leaks a lot and I wouldn’t recommend beyond just watering seed. If you can find a better quality sprinkler that has a misting setting than I can pretty much guarantee it will be better.
This is a great video. I recently purchased a house with a very neglected lawn. I want to overseed this fall, but also definitely am going to need a weed pre-emergent to tackle an existing issue. When/how can I use a weed product in conjunction with your method and which do you recommend?

Wholly sh** when you were mentioning best seed to get I was thinking of Twin City Seed and the low & behold you name drop them a few moments later! Haha!
since the black beuty seed contains KBG i would cut the lawn lower than 2 in and hold off on applying the starter fert until your first mow otherwise the fescue will crowd out the kbg
Thanks for the video, I had KBG sod installed back in spring (had no other option). Large areas died from insect damage. My landscaper suggested aerating and overseeing rather than lifting up the loose dead sod, leveling with new soil and seeding. Thoughts?
I think that is a great idea 👍 But I wouldn’t overseed kbg because it can be tough to overseed plus takes for ever to establish. Instead I would overseed some pure ryegrass into your kbg. They look great together (very dark) and you’ll have a full thick lawn in 1 week after seeding.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare thanks, any thoughts on mixing in some tall fescue to help maintain some green during summer stress? I like to keep my lawn around 2.5-3 inches so not sure if TF will work. Think its min height is around 3-3.5 inches
Great informative video! I used peat moss when I planted grass on an inclined dirt patch and got great results. Is peat moss appropriate to use when overseeding for better soil-seed contact?
Great video! Towards the end of the video you showed little mushrooms growing in the new lawn. I have not yet undertaken your overseeding program on my patchy and sad Bermuda grass lawn here in GA, but we currently have some mushrooms growing in the lawn in the front. Does this mean my lawn is diseased or is currently very moist to encourage these mushrooms? Besides being unsightly I'd like to get rid of them for good so if there is anything to apply, etc. let me know thanks!
Thank you! the mushrooms mean that there to too much consistant water at the soils surface. Are you irrigating frequently? If so, dial it down to be more deep and infrequent
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Ah ok thanks for the reply! We actually had a bit of a rainy week recently in GA and I haven't run the sprinkler system in quite a while... so that explains it!!
Hattrick is in my front yard… my only regret is not doing it at 100% because there is virtually zero disease pressure where I live. In my experience Hattrick also does awesome in very dense shade mowed around 2”. I haven’t tried Hattrick mowed low in dense shade, but it actually beat out all my fine fescues and bluegrass and is crazy dark and thriving… didn’t expect a rye to dominate under a willow but my theory is the dark color (extra chlorophyll) gives it the means to produce adequate carbs with significantly less sun. That’s my favorite grass seed right there and it beat out Fireball by a pretty good margin for color if I remember right. I like the Solo chest mount spreader for seed, but not as budget friendly, so doesn’t quite fit in this video. Worth noting… I planted Scott’s rye in one pot, Hattrick in another… Pangea GLR in another. The Scott’s looked like total crap compared to the other two after a few months… disease, coarser blade, and lesser color, but mostly disease. Scott’s makes great fertilizer for a budget (Fall Lawn Food is a premium prill size w/ moderate Potassium), but their grass seed is coated and potentially inferior cultivars via my potting results. Pangea may be a superior grass where disease pressure is high depending on what is desired. NTEP… what would crazies like us do without it?
Trevor man you gotta start filming all these cool experiments in your lawn! I swear everytime you comment you always have something interesting goin on haha And that’s good to know about hat trick! I haven’t over seeded my blvd strip yet so I’m going to use only hat trick for that section. Thanks for the heads up!
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Just one emphasis… there is virtually zero disease pressure in my area. When it’s hot it’s only a few days over 85° and no rain when it is hot and even when it is hot night time lows aren’t over 65° more than one or two days, and no chance of snow mold either. I don’t get 5 consecutive days of +85° highs and +65° lows… even one day of disease pressure is rare much less 5. I feel like I remember Hattrick having mediocre disease resistance, so that might be worth checking out before you go all out since we’re in different areas. In the Pacific NW we get about 2” of snow a year and maybe 5-10 days over 90° total. Pretty close to no disease pressure with most grass types. I planted Hattrick w/ Pangea just in case disease hit me, but that was before I knew that our weather is not far from ideal for avoiding disease so I don’t think the Pangea was necessary. One plant by another & I can tell which one is Hattrick but Pangea was supposed to be a darker variety also w/ amazing disease resistance and it’s supposed to be a favorite on golf coarser with nearly the highest “stand quality” but the color is far from Hattrick on a low mow. If you can avoid disease I don’t think you’ll regret a monostand of Hattrick, but w/ disease it’s a bit risky… a monostand if it is my current plan on my next lawn if I can still get it when I seed. And some random rambling below… I like to be able to see the seed head and pull it if it isn’t rye (makes poa mitigation more guaranteed and fail safe w/ no color judging) so I don’t know if I’ll ever do a 100% bluegrass yard simply because of the asset of a highly differentiated seed heads. My lawn is a freak show for color in my area, but it would be even crazier w/ 100% Hattrick. It seems like the only question I’ve been getting asked is some variant of “is that real grass?” recently. Rocking the checkerboard pattern and I’m about to increase my spoon feeding rates to about .10#N/week AMS + ≈.05P|.10K via Jack’s Nutrients 5-12-26. I think I’m removing SOP(K) and MAP(P) from my future program and instead switching to Jacks 5-12-26 for all my P & K needs… properly ratio’s micro’s in good quality for soil use… mostly I like it as a K source because the cost is similar to SOP, but I like the ratios and quality of all the ingredients and how balanced it is when combined with AMS. Jacks is lacking as a foliar (EDTA molecules are too big), so before guests are coming, ferrous sulfate is better via something like FeRROMEC @ 2oz / gallon, or MicroGreene @ 3-4oz / gallon but for soil application Jacks is better than Super Juice in terms of quality without the 100-fold markup and a tiny little bag. I got lucky and never bought an ounce of Super Joke, but I did go for a ride on the humic train for a while when I just wanted to ‘do something’ w/o requiring evidence… shocker… no results and no CEC change despite wasting ≈ $150. The only GCF product I could kind of recommend would be MicroGreene… it’s super cheap low quality ingredients, but it’s perfect for a balanced foliar application if someone feels like blowing a little money and only seeing a very temporary boost. Vivax was the wetting agent I settled on although I’d be open to try other things in the future like tournament ready (Rey Ito seems to prefer solid form wetting agents for some reason and obviously he knows 100x more than me), but the Air-8 wetting agent can go in the garbage. Humic12 is brown water. RGS probably offers some benefit in the right situation, but I’d generally be reluctant to do the opposite of all the good T-Nex does, so RGS confuses me a bit… maybe a good thing during fall(?) on cool season grass potentially but do roots really need motivation to grow? My program has become more simplified the more I learn… my keeper products that go in my front lawn are AMS, Jack’s 5-12-26, Vivax (or some other quality wetting agents), foliar FeRROMEC or MicroGreen (before guests only… low rate), and some T-Nex when the GDD’s allow some gap between applications and maybe T-Nex extended before & during seed head even though it’s kind of a pain to apply so often. Urea, MOP, SOP, Scottt’s Fall lawn food, ProPeat (AMS based but liquids only in the front), Peter’s Pro 24-8-16, GrowORR, etc. go in the second’s category which is plenty suitable for my back yard. I’ve become very picky about my nitrogen source… liquid AMS only.
man... sounds like im living in the wrong place! i need to move out west, the weather here is either boiling and humid or frigid cold... I dont mid just using hatrick because the blvd already has KBG in it so i think ill be alright, actually just did it yesterday haha Btw only Next products i have are greenpop and green punch, they are both greats ferts, a bit expensive but i dont mind as i have a small lawn, cant say im sold on the bio stims tho
Hey brother, what's the best time to do a seed renovation in Florida? Specifically for Bermuda grass. I was able to score some big box Scott's bermuda seed for half and I'm scared I won't establish my lawn correctly 😅 lol
I did the mistake already of adding 2 different bermuda seeds and the lawn looked like an army jacket (lime green and dark green) grass blades all over my lawn lol
ill be honest bud i dont know much about seeding bermuda but i would encourage you to check out the bermuda bible on the lawn forum, you will get all your questions answered there
Planning to overseed in September. Great video as always George. Planning to mow low to about 2", next aerating and then spreading the seeds. Going with Lesco starter fertilizer 18-24-12. Thoughts?
My sprinklers were disconnected on my 1/2 acre property for 1.5 years while new landscaping was slowly being done (contractors were scarce during early covid years). I watered maybe 1x per week with an inexpensive sprinkler and thought I would have to re-sod my lawn once everything was done. The grass looked almost dead. However, just in case it worked, I overseeded and was amazed by the results. My revived lawn looks better than others around me. However, I bought a soil mix that I spread around just before the seed. Do you think it made a difference? It cost a lot more than the seed.
Do you recommend germinating seeds, soaking for a few (5-7) days, in lower Fairfield county Connecticut ? Will have to mix the damp germinated soil with dry ingredients...use Peat moss? Fertilizer? Please advise. I have a very bumpy, un-level side lawn as had to dig up yard to install water draining Cultech systems. So, will order about 20 yards of topsoil...I have about 5500 square feet of lawn/yard area that I will resoil and reseed. Further, any need to mix in sand? Lots of rocks, both big and small, in yard....Connecticut tings' 😊 Thanks.
Hi! Only time I recommend pregerminating seed is when overseeding Kentucky bluegrass INTO Kentucky bluegrass. If your not doing that, I think it’s a waste of time
Love the videos. Mwant to start dethatching and top dressing in September, but time got away. Did I wait too long? Like you, in Western suburbs of Chicago...
Sup boss! short answer yes its too late.... BUT if you buy some pure perennial ryegrass seed and seed it ASAP than you have a good shot of making it before the first first hits

Love this video and planning to reseed and fill in bare patches in my lawn in September. I'm in the Chicagoland area too George. For the fertilizer, what would you recommend since I need to cover about 15k sq feet? I saw a 3-18-18 liquid fertilizer from Simple lawn solutions for under 50 bucks which will cover almost 15k sq ft
I've been watching all your videos. I just got my Soil Test back and I'm at 7.39 for Nitrogen, 13.07 for Phosphorus (which it says is high), and 33.02 for Potassium (which they say is low.) I just dethatched my 21,000 sq ft yard. I was going to aerate and overseed this week, but our temps are climbing to 90 the next 6 days here in Cedar Rapids, IA, and I go out oof town for 4 days, so I will do it when I get home on Monday. Given the results of my soil test, what would you recommend I use as a started fertilizer, given my Phosphorus is already quite high, and my Potassium low? I will be throwing down Scotts Sun and Shade. Thank you for the content, and if you have time to answer, I would really appreciate it!!!
Hey Robert! Thanks for stopping by 🙏 Given your soil test, I would not throw any starter fertilizer at all (this is a good thing as we don’t have to promote growth of the existing grass) Right after you mow your overseed for the first time you can apply Scott’s lawn food in the green bag at 1/4 the bag rate weekly for 4 weeks. After that you can follow the bag rate as normal.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Bro! You replied so quickly!!! THANK YOU!! Would you say it's smart to wait another week to overseed due to excessive heat? I do have a Rainbird irrigation system in the front yard, but nothing in the back, so I was going to order one of those systems from your previous video that allows you to water through a garden hose on that smart faucet app. It's been warmer than normal here, but no telling if I'll get a full 40-45 days of growth before the first freeze. That's been my main concern. Also, it says my iron is low at 3.68, and my pH is high at 7.17. If there is anything else you'd recommend I do or add ot the regimen, I'm willing to spend the cash.. Thanks again for the knowledge bombs!
thanks! no need to pregermicate ryegrass, it already sprouts fast, the only grass i would ever pregerminate is kentucky bluegrass because it takes forever to sprout
its a great point about large droplets, but the orbit sprinkler thats was linked to doesn't have a great misting feature. Someone post if they find a good one.
Hey George, I did an overseed last fall with tttf/kbg. Lawn is pretty established However, I have couple of areas of poa trivialis ( lime green areas) I would like to kill off and do a light overseed with only tttf. I do plan to dethatch my lawn. My question is can I use Andersons 16-4-8 fertilizer? I have a bag of it now. I plan to do Andersons Barricade pre-emergent split app in late Oct early November when soil temps call for it. Thanks for this content.
Hey George, I’m week one out from my seeding. I did a light reseed over my established lawn and asked you PGF Completd Fertilizer. My edits led lawn is growing like crazy now and I have germination in some of the bare areas. Dethatching my lawn caused more bare areas than I expected so was a little upset about that. I’m forced to mow now. Will that affect my new germination at all? Also, what are your thoughts on doing nitrogen blitz every two weeks with urea or ammonium sulfate fertilizers? Came across some discussion on this. I have cool season grass.
I’m super new into fixing my lawn and properly taking care of it. I have Bermuda grass as I live in the Central Valley so it’s hot most of the year. It’s expected to be over 105-115 for the next 7 days and then 90, 10 days from now. Do I need to completely remove what grass I currently have and then add a different type of seed?
I’m gonna reseed my yard soon, I have a question. I had a big tree cut done years ago and just had the stump grinded down. What would be a good way to level the area where that stump was? Thinking about rototill it.
Hi, I watch you all the time, great videos. I'm in Michigan and really need to be overseeded. But our temperatures will remain around 80-85 next week, so will my seeds be ok with these temperatures? Thank you for any advice you can give me.
Hi Ynonne, do you have irrigation that you can set to water a consistent 4 times daily? If not i would advice you to wait a week. Only reason i seeded early was because i can count on irrigation to cool it down, otherwise i would have waited.
I just bought a bluebird power rake used for a great deal . .. so I hope to use the power rake and then overseed and I'm going to grab a push roller tomorrow as I have a tow behind but it weighs 1000 pounds.....have you tried a power rake ? Thoughts

@@PrincessCutLawnCare yes that's where I got the idea.. machine was sent in for repair and guy never picked it up so I paid $300 for it and new decals and paint it looks new... excited to get it going. Kept my eye out for a year. Any thoughts on covering seed with pine straw or shavings I know in the UK they use a white cloth ... I've always wounded about pine shavings with the low cost compared to fibermulch
Any recommendations for levelling a lawn with a large maple tree? Its seems like rain water consistently drips off of it in the same places leaving small craters and indents. Not sure if it's worth levelling for a short mow, or just keeping a lush, dense taller cut.
Hey George, would you say that any leveling should be done in early spring as the grass is coming out of dormancy? I noticed you didnt use any peat moss or top soil during overseeding. Is that a personal preference?
Mid spring and mid fall are the best times for cool season lawns to be leveled. Also top dressing is not needed when overseeding, the thatch layer will hold enough moisture to encourage the grass to germinate. The seed does not need to be below anything to germinate, it just needs to be directly pressed into the soil.
Great video I have one question. First of all, I just did a full reno on my lawn and have tttf at about 4". Going to do my first mow, Do you thing I should do a over seed to thicken my lawn now? Or wait till spring? I live in IL
Drop spreader is great for going around the edges, but i would use a broadcast spreader for "inside' the lawn. Drop spreaders tend to be very inconsistent in their application so i would not use it for the entire lawn as it can lead to striping of the seed
hey lance! you know all these misting sprinklers suck and they are pretty much a 1 use type deal before they start leaking, i just buy the cheapest ones and use them for seeding and thats it
@princessCutLawnCare I used Jonathan Green Sun and Shade in the spring to fill in some thin areas. Initially it looked the lawn looked great but now every spot that I filled in is bare and covered in weeds where the grass was. The rest of my lawn does not look as bare (dirt). I'm about to overseed and wanted to see if you think the JG seed was the issue and perhaps try something different? I live in NY.
I’m a total newbie, but typically, if budgeting allows, you would detach, seed, water and all right around this time each year to by definition be “overseeding”?
Welcome my friend! Overseeding is the act of adding seed to your existing lawn to thicken it up. Everything else are the prep and maintenance required for it to be successful
Just followed these steps to a T last Sunday. 1. Mow low, #2 setting on my Milwaukee mower, #1 was straight up scarifying it, didn’t feel comfortable with that. 2. Dethatched 3. Used the mower to bag the thatch 4. Spread the seed, Rented lawn roller, filled probably 2/3 full, rolled the lawn twice 5. I have been watering 4x a day for 7-10 minutes, to try to keep the ground moist. Average temps here in KY have been about 80 high. Still a little concerned that five days later most of my seeds still sit on top of the soil looks like no germination has taken place so far. Do you think I should be super worried yet? I’m perfectly fine using my timer to keep watering them the next couple weeks, just not sure how long you all wait before you determine the seed is going to germinate or won’t.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll share a photo when it reaches mowing height. Keep up the good work on the channel.
Lol
Thanks david! like you im still always learning as well:)
Those 2 are some pretty swell guys!
Thank you for another great video. No mubo jumbo direct and simple. If and when water restrictions are lifted I'll be over seeding.
appreciate that frank! what type of seed will you be putting down?
Going to try my first overseeding this fall. Using Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra seed, with Yard Mastery Starter fert. I’ll first scalp from 4” to 2”. Rake in seed. Watering 2 times a day will have to suffice. I work all day, no auto irrigation. Target date of September 30. Thanks for this video!
Nice choice! the JG seed is some dark stuff!
Good luck w your project!
Nice explanation..this year is the first time in 5 years I'm not overseeding. The lawn doesn't need it, so I'm taking a break this fall

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thinking Labor Day weekend
The Scott’s sun & shade seed is a really great “big box” option. A mix of kbg, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue. Can be cut low or to about three inches.
It’s awesome stuff!
Good Luck!
one question: did you apply fert?
@@PrincessCutLawnCare yes I applied the Scott’s starter that includes mesotrione.
I’m in Illinois as well and your videos are great. Thank you for all the help.
Awesome video George! Lawn looks amazing at the end! I spent my morning dethatching my lawn. Pulled 8 bags of material out with the SunJoe, in the process of watering in the fertilizer I put down after dethatching
Thanks dude! Did you overseed as well?

Great tip boss!
Gotta love those off season specials!
Thank you so much for such a simple way of sharing your knowledge. I’m new to taking care of a yard and feel overwhelmed most of the time. I will definitely try this and hope to get the results you get. Thanks again!

You have 100% KBG don’t necessarily need to overseed unless you just want to introduce some PRG into the mix.
Haven’t overseed in a couple years and KBG just spreads.
Very true, I’m starting to like rye grass more and more haha
Perfect timing George my seed and fertilizer is in the garage and I've lowered my grass to 3/4 inch ready to overseed KBG next weekend what do you thing about sand leveling over the overseed? I'm really wanting to try that this year.
nice! if you want to level be sure to do it before seeding, the leveling process will bury the kbg seeds to deep in the soil

Step order: Scalp, seed, rake, roll (optional), fertilizer. Then water, often but lightly (mist is best).
since the black beuty seed contains KBG i would cut the lawn lower than 2 in and hold off on applying the starter fert until your first mow otherwise the fescue will crowd out the kbg
Good stuff, George! Great info!

Yea I got this! Thanks George 😊
Yeah you do!
What type of grass are you seeding this season??
Thanks for the video, I had KBG sod installed back in spring (had no other option). Large areas died from insect damage. My landscaper suggested aerating and overseeing rather than lifting up the loose dead sod, leveling with new soil and seeding. Thoughts?
I think that is a great idea 👍
But I wouldn’t overseed kbg because it can be tough to overseed plus takes for ever to establish.

Thanks for a vid on cool grasses.it seems like every vid I’ve seem is about Bermuda grass types. We do not have that here in Pa. 🤪
No problem my friend! good luck with your project 😀
I swear everytime you comment you always have something interesting goin on haha
And that’s good to know about hat trick!
And some random rambling below…
I like to be able to see the seed head and pull it if it isn’t rye (makes poa mitigation more guaranteed and fail safe w/ no color judging) so I don’t know if I’ll ever do a 100% bluegrass yard simply because of the asset of a highly differentiated seed heads.
I dont mid just using hatrick because the blvd already has KBG in it so i think ill be alright, actually just did it yesterday haha

Top dressing will help but I don’t think it justifies the cost

I was going to aerate and overseed this week, but our temps are climbing to 90 the next 6 days here in Cedar Rapids, IA, and I go out oof town for 4 days, so I will do it when I get home on Monday. I will be throwing down Scotts Sun and Shade. Thank you for the content, and if you have time to answer, I would really appreciate it!!!
Hey Robert! Thanks for stopping by 🙏
Given your soil test, I would not throw any starter fertilizer at all (this is a good thing as we don’t have to promote growth of the existing grass)
Right after you mow your overseed for the first time you can apply Scott’s lawn food in the green bag at 1/4 the bag rate weekly for 4 weeks.
After that you can follow the bag rate as normal.
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Bro! You replied so quickly!!! THANK YOU!! Would you say it's smart to wait another week to overseed due to excessive heat? George which sunjoe attachment do you use before over seeding? The dethatcher tines or verticutter/scarifier blades?
Hi Peter, i only use the verticutter attachment. Not only will it remove the thatch but it will also put slits in the soil that will cradle your seed.

Any recommendations for levelling a lawn with a large maple tree? Its seems like rain water consistently drips off of it in the same places leaving small craters and indents. Not sure if it's worth levelling for a short mow, or just keeping a lush, dense taller cut.
I’m in lower Michigan, doing sod. What would be the cut off for doing it?
I would have it down by mid sept

Drop spreaders tend to be very inconsistent in their application so i would not use it for the entire lawn as it can lead to striping of the seed
Is there a misting sprinkler you recommend? That's the 1 equipment I don't have.
hey lance! you know all these misting sprinklers suck and they are pretty much a 1 use type deal before they start leaking, i just buy the cheapest ones and use them for seeding and thats it
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Let me know if you find a decent one. Until then I'll use a spray misting bottle.
Would you recommend we aerate before or after mowing while re-seeding?
I’m a total newbie, but typically, if budgeting allows, you would detach, seed, water and all right around this time each year to by definition be “overseeding”?
Welcome my friend!
Overseeding is the act of adding seed to your existing lawn to thicken it up.
Everything else are the prep and maintenance required for it to be successful
Just followed these steps to a T last Sunday.
1. Mow low, #2 setting on my Milwaukee mower, #1 was straight up scarifying it, didn’t feel comfortable with that.
2. Dethatched
3. Used the mower to bag the thatch
4. Spread the seed, Rented lawn roller, filled probably 2/3 full, rolled the lawn twice
I wish St.Augustine could come from seeds, it would be so much easier.
how do you fill in bare spots? forgive me, i dont know much about st aug
@@PrincessCutLawnCare I have to order plugs and plant them spaced out, then pray that they spread to meet one another.
You can just use a hose with a nozzle with different settings?
If you have a small area, then yes no problem
How much triple superphosphate do you apply to your lawn? Scott spreader setting?
whattabout aerating or breaking up the hard dirt so the seed roots can break thru?
Will help but not needed when overseeding
How did this handle the heat?! I’m located in Kansas City.
I use that quick connectors and they don’t work they leak a lot, I don’t know if they came bad , but as soon I put it they leak a lot
Where in Chicago are you? I’m in south Elgin just bought my house but our lawn needs major help
