    Valyria reminds me of the empire of Rome. Great civilization, very advanced for their time, big territory, many conquests, started as a small village, great families ruled at least for a time and no sole ruler (king,emperor,etc.) during the time of the republic.
    I know where the inspiration came from.

    • @zhengyangwang214

      they are in many ways like the Roman Empire/Republic but they weren't as expansionist as they are, they existed for nearly 5000 years yet they managed to only take over an area about the same size as the Seven Kingdoms, or maybe its written with the perspective of the maesters so perhaps the real history would be the Freehold is bigger with the Sarnori the Ifeqevron, Qarthi as their vassals. The Yi Ti and Jogos Nhai could have been subjected to their rules since they had dragons, lots of them which are the nukes in this story.

      yep except that the Valyrians are less expansionist than the Romans, they existed for nearly 8000 years (okay maybe 4700 years after they defeated the Ghiscari) but they never really expanded much, they had dragons which was like the nukes in their world, yet they have overtaken land about the same size as the Seven Kingdoms under the Targaryens, if you asked me they could've expanded more or had more vassals at least. Or did they? (Since GRR Martin specfically said the books about the fictional world is mainly written in perspective of the maesters in westeros) So, it was more like our own real history of Europe in the Middle Ages where the rest of the world is unknown and shrouded in myths and legends.

    • @JamesCourse66
      @JamesCourse66 6 лет назад +3

      marinus18 Actually, it is saying that the steel is stronger. The more it is folded, the more brittle normal steel is. Valyrian steel remains stronger than regular steel, lighter than typical steel.

      @@JamesCourse66
      Folding doesn't make steel more or less brittle. In fact folding does the opposite and makes steel more soft. Because as you fold hot steel you burn out carbon. It's largely the carbon content that determines hardness.

    • @JamesCourse66
      @JamesCourse66 5 лет назад +1

      marinus18 But soft is what I mean. As far as I understood, it’s risky to keep folding because the sword could just fall apart. Again my point is Valyrian steel is definitely an anomaly because it’s very light but also much stronger than regular steel. Most steels that strong are very heavy.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 5 лет назад +2

      @@JamesCourse66 Brittle means being too hard. If a sword is too soft it means it will bent too easily.

    Good video there os more context than in a World of ice and fire, but I really don't like the music that was used. Walyria was powerful and brutal. So the relaxing music from the past is good to Silmarillion but not Walyria.

    Genghis Khan conquered most of Eurasia in 50 years and Aegon did conquered most of W in 2, but it took Valyrians with 100s of dragons 5000 years to take western Essos.
    bad worldbuilding -.-

    • @bestkill6888
      @bestkill6888 4 года назад +6

      Its not bad worldbuilding lmao. The Valyrians didnt want to expand all that much for a long time. Plus during their time the World wasnt advanced or all that well populated. Most of it was basic land that no one owned. The Valyrians built Volantis, Lys, Lorath etc. and conquered the others and built them up. Unlike with Aegon, the Valyrians werent all that concered with anyone else, thats why they let the Free Cities govern themselves.

    • @utvara1

      @@bestkill6888 no. Militaristic conquerors with technological supremacy don't stop until they are defeated or the unifying figure dies. The psychological profile of a conqueror does not function like what you wrote.
      Profound lack of human profiling or history with you.

      @@utvara1 Yeah your right. Like if I had dragons, all I see that are easy pickings, I would certainly conquer them. Even if uncivilized.

    • @AnimeSlaps

      It would actually be easier because the kingdoms or domains are more centralized. Aegon had to conquer 7 Kingdoms in a world that new jack shit about magic or dragons. Valyrians would have to conquer probably 10's if not a hundred plus smaller settlements (who'd have some knowledge of magic and dragons) and hold them which is somewhat costly.
      I think it just made more sense for them to build their kingdom to a certain point and if lesser settlements came together they would have sovereignty over them (like what happened with Braavos)

    I wonder if Valyria was planning to invade Westeros. After all Dragonstone was a nice outpost and it's quite clear that they could have. I guess the doom came before they really could.
    One thing about history that I also know is that the larger an empire becomes the more strength it needs to maintain itself. So maybe Valyria was already approaching the maximum size it could be. The Romans also hit their size limit and despite being by far the greatest power on the continent with no nation able to match even a tenth of their army they never expanded further.

    • @JamesCourse66
      @JamesCourse66 6 лет назад +3

      It’s very unlikely that as a whole Valyria would travel west. Their homeland was far more valuable and the cities in Essos have always been much larger and richer than Westeros minus Oldtown.

    • @zhengyangwang214
      @zhengyangwang214 5 лет назад +3

      the Valyrians shunned Westeros because of a prophecy that expanding to there would bring about their downfall.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 5 лет назад

      @@JamesCourse66 That their homeland is valuable only matters if there is a power nearby that can threaten it and there wasn't. I think that profacy and also the fact that westeros is an island. It means it will be fairly cut off and it doesn't have many obvious resources.
