Need to do an update as GRRM and HOTD have now confirmed the conquest was due to a vision about the white walkers
So they conquered the Vale by giving a kid the chance to ride on a dragon. A brilliant PR stunt!
ummmm OR it was to prove that they couldn't hide up in the Vale...mountains and walls mean nothing to a dragon...it was a threat.
T C I know that was the real reason. It was a joke.
@@kaneslives Well I mean, why not both. Yeah it was a threat, I mean Visenya could have probably killed him if she wanted to, although I don't know if she would kill a child without reason. On the other hand, she still gave him the ride, if you do something like that for a kid, they will never forget it and probably would remember it fondly.
And she could have just killed her son
@@williamparabellum2787 Yeah, it was an act of kindness for the child, and a veiled threat to the child's mother and regent.
I didn’t think about it before, but having the Targaryen dynasty formed just 300 years ago was brilliant. It allowed Martin to flesh out the whole dynasty and detail out every king, with many of them having ripple effects in the present story, something he never could have done with a dynasty thousands of years old.
What a stupid comment. Youre ignoring the fact that no matter how old the royal family or ruling power is the people/commoners and world change every generation. It would have been just as easy to establish an interesting dynasty if Westeros were conquered sooner, later, or if the Targaryens had been the royal line for another century, millenia or whatever.

Kudos to the creators for reading the book, summarizing and noting significant events and relationships, and for making this video as understandable as possible. Plus, they tried to portray the characters visually thru drawings. Hats off!
The triangle of Queen Naerys, Prince Aemon the Dragonknight, and Aegon the Unworthy is truly one of the saddest and most tragic stories, especially as it happened to one of the most noble knights in Westerosi history. To the end, through the hatred, Ser Aemon died protecting his King. 😭😭
I love how Aenys is just the ship name of Aegon and Rhaenys
They was not immune to fire but they had a high heat tolerance
@Jerry Cregan Stark Mathurin i know i said that but in the book deanerys got blasted with dragon fire and it left her with simi burnt and she had blisters over her arm neck if she and other people with targeyen blood when the tryied to ride a dragon during the dance of dragon they got blasted with dragon fire they burnted jusy like daeny what i think is that some targeyens have a high resistance to fire but their not completely immune to fire they can still burn if in the fire longer then a few minutes
@@josiahdavistv1216 Drogon blasted fire at her in the Arena but she dodged it. The heat wave coming just missing her so closely gave her blisters not the actual fire itself. So yeah they do have high resistance to heat, although it has limits, but not actual fire itself and they still will get burnt and have been burnt and killed by actual fire. Fire resistance is just show nonsense.
@@josiahdavistv1216 some targeryens when born have certain powers like seeing the future, riding dragons and some are resisting to fire so I'm guessing that was dannys power because she survived fires that no normal person would survive, that's my guess anyway
@@alemooche5159 Naah, that's not it. Martin himself stated that Dany surviving the fire along with hatching three eggs was just the culmination of all the right parts coming together at the exact right time and being a miraculous one off event that will rarely, if ever, happen again. No Targaryen are fireproof as per his own words. And that's remained true so far in the books, she has been burnt in the books. We see the effects of it when she is alone in the Dothraki Sea after she is taken there by Drogon.
that's wat he said
Aegon III is my favorite king. His story is such a tragic character.
King stark might have 'taken the knee' but he did what he felt was best for his people & not his pride. He probably saw that they couldn't win so he surrendered the crown but still held the respect of his people.

If only my College Ancient History classes we're as entertaining as this I would have passed them with ease! I know more about a fictional history of a book series better then my actual history! 🤣😹
Because actual history doesn't have dragons
Actually there are many similarites between this and real history. Not just English and European history. But some of it are also inspired by ancient Persian mythology and history. Practicing incest for example was part of their religion to persevere the purity of their race and fire was the holiest God as well.
"staying true to the woman he continued to ignore" -- Aery's I's relationship with his neglected wife....well put!! 😂
I know this family tree moreso than my own.
NO REGERTS!
What is a "regert"?
Family *circle
I wonder how much of their history would have changed if their dragons wouldn't have gone extinct after the Dance of Dragons.
The first book "A Game of Thrones" started after the Targaryens were overthrown, with no dragons alive, and finished with the three dragon eggs hatching. As a result, when GRRM later wrote his book about the reigns of the Targaryens, he was writing a prequel, and he thus was constrained as to where the storyline had to lead, and thus GRRM had to kill off all the dragons (except perhaps Morning, who disappeared along with its rider, perhaps to somewhere oversea).
Imagine The Mad King having dragons? There would have been no Robert’s Rebellion. He would have “burn them all” himself.
@@mdavid32 There's a chance he wouldn't have gone mad tho. If the Dragons were still around many other kings would have survived their pitfalls.
One day this will be extended and Daenerys' history will be told casually without mentioning the dozens of chapters.
My ranking of the 17 Targaryen Kings from best to worst are:
1. Jaehaerys I
2. Aegon I
3. Daeron II
4. Aegon V
5. Viserys I
6. Viserys II
7. Daeron I
8. Maekar I
9. Aerys I
10. Jaehaerys II
11. Aegon III
12. Aenys I
13. Baelor I
14. Aegon II
15. Maegor I
16. Aerys II
17. Aegon IV
🐉🔥👑
Why would you have Daeron I so high? His reign was very short lived and he got himself and thousands of royal soliders killed in the failed conquest of Dorne. I'd switch him and Jaehaery's II if I were you.
I would put Baelor above Daeron I and Viserys I
@@iangallagher5448 yea king Baelor should be higher. He atoned for all of what daeron the first did. Basically by himself.
Viserys I above Viserys II?? Which one wasn't smart enough to see the obviously developing civil war?
I would put Aegon V above Aegon I because all Aegon I did was conquering stuff
The prince Aegon Targaryen mentioned at the end :: he and Daenerys should marry each other, and their son would inherit both their claims to the throne. Mirri Maz Duur's curse says that ( _unlikely events will happen before_ ) Daenerys's womb will bring forth _a child_ :: singular :: One fan-fiction author writing an "alternate continuation" bypassed this by writing in his story that Daenerys had twins.

I have such a newfound respect for Aegon III and Viserys II. Aegon III was a good king plagued by a corrupt realm and court and finally gained the strength to stand up against them. Viserys II a good king plagued by having to see his lunatic brothers rule where he should have been.
His brother wasn't necessary a lunatic but was sullen and depressed after watching his mother be eaten by a dragon, and brother fall to his death. Plus only Aegon III sat on the throne. Jacerys, Lucerys and Joffery never got a chance
Alicent Hightower, her father Ser Otto Hightower & Ser Cristen Cole Lord Commander of the Kingsguard (broke his oath as member of the Kingsguard by accepting being named Hand of the King by Aegon II, Kingsguard Knights are supposed to hold no titles or lands) are personally to blame for the Dance of Dragons civil war. By not accepting the ruling of Viserys I that his daughter Rhaenyra was his lawful successor and True Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Yeah, but the same could be said that Viserys I himself is to blame, because he didn't obey what his ancestor Jaehaerys I "The Conciliator" wrote down in the law.
@@andreasballe7470 Viserys knew Alicent wanted to place Aegon II on the throne.
He was correct in what he did as Aegon II wasn't fit to sit the iron throne. Aegon was going to accept Rhaenyra as Heir until his mother and grandfather got in his head and convinced him to claime the throne himself.

What if the embarrassment of Raena Targaryen wasn’t an embarrassment because the three eggs stole from her turned out to be the three stone eggs Daenerys got/hatched? That would actually mean that those eggs being stolen were a blessing that revived the dragons. The only thing that sucks is drogon is the last living dragon meaning it won’t be able to reproduce more. Unless the books turn out different.
Dont you ever compare the show and the books. The show isnt canon.
@@AlithAnar True. I think George will have all three dragons live so Jon and Daenerys can marry, and become the next Jahearys and Allysane Targaryen. Hello do you have an updated video which covers the Targaryen history up to the end of season 8? Thanks for your work with these videos as they helped me understand the series and the history in a clear and concise presentation.
This is the canon from the books, not the show
*Aegon I "The Conqueror"* : Badass, genius, ambitious and player. The Pioneer of the Targaryen Dynasty.
*Aenys I* :A bit of a dissapointment compared to his father. He tried his best, but he really needed to grow a back bone.
*Maegor "The Cruel"* Incredible warrior, "terrible king". He had an emo ending.
*Jahearys I "The Conciliador"* : Best King Westeros ever had. An badass warrior, a good husband and a father who suffered a lot.
*Viserys I* : Pretty good ruler. Terrible for picking wives. Very depressing how his wishes were not respected.
*Aegon II* : A usurper who rejected his father's wishes, started a war and murdered his sister in front of her child (like c'mon man). Honestly a dissapointment for Lord Cregan Stark and many others that they poisoned him (the Gods know how convenient and better it would've been for many had the court acted liked that during Joffrey's rule. Also the only time I would've loved to see a Sack of King's Landing with Lord Cregan Stark and the full mightvof the North in all their glory. Instead the Sack of KL we got was from Tywin and ended with people who didn't deserve it paying for the sins of others.)
*Queen Rhaynera Targaryen* :The true heir at the time. She would've done a nice job (she wasn't any Jahearys but still not a bad ruler).
*Aegon III "The Broken-Dragonsbane"* : A pretty tragic beginning but a great rise to power.
*Daeron I "The Young Dragon"* : A short lived reign but a very remarkable king.
*Baelor I "The Blessed"* : Bit of a religious nut case but not that bad.
*Viserys II* : The definition of "He was this close to greatness."
*Aegon IV "The Unworthy* : The worst king ever seen. Even Joffrey wasn't that bad. He only worsen and made everything terrible for everyone even after death. Had the accident not happened, he might've improved the antecedents that led to the tragedies that followed.
*Daeron II "The Good"* : A pretty good ruler. Had the rumor of his uncle and mother been trurh, I would've still follow him.
*Aerys I* : Not a bad king but also not the best.
*Maekar I* : A pretty decent ruler all things considered
*Aegon V "The Unlikely"* : A king who understood the people, an adventurer and had some pretty disrespectful children
*Jahearys II* : He's ok.
*Aerys II "The Mad King"* : A joke and a monster who brought down and pissed on the kingdom that his ancestors fought, suffered and died for.
*Daenerys "Stormborn" (titles, titles....) Targaryen I* : Let's hope for the best.

The poor girl, only 12 years old thought it a good idea to try and run away from home with virtually no planning, no preparation, and only lofty but naive dreams in her heart, and a 'stolen' magical dragon for a steed. Unfortunately no amount of Belerion The Black's dragon fire it seems shielded her from every peril she faced. Even with a great mystical beast like Belerion, no matter how big and terrible he was could've prepared Aerea for all of the dark realities of the world beyond her royal, privileged life, however boring and unfulfilling said living may have been for her. Still that tragic tale of horror really got to me, like even without an actual picture your description was graphic enough for my imagination to unfortunately fill in the grizzly details.
*"Often a gilded cage is preferable to a whole world of danger and uncertainty."*
But anyway, besides all that this has been an AWSOME lore series, love your narration and you always seem to do your homework, keep it up! **gives thumbs up**
For me it scares me more what was the thing that Balerion faced that he couldn't protect Aerea from. Keep in mind this is possibly the most powerful dragon we've ever heard of TWASOIAF, so unless he was facing the Deep Ones, Sea or Ice Dragons, Krakens or anything similar, I can't imagine what they could've encountered.
@@admin.slayerenryu5217 well the deep ones are basically walking mermaids iirc from lovecraft, who GRRM states they are yionked from. dragon vs kraken seems like a logistical problem.
Now another, older Dragon seems a good fit for his giant smoking wound down his side.
The girl was full of parasitic worms, dragon can't stop that, too small
@@skizzik121 A leading theory is Balerion fought a firewyrm and Aerea was infected with them.
Amazing everything from 28:55 on is just jaw dropping
Tbf Maegor gave them one last three-day meal before he killed them so... Not a bad way to go
I relisten to this video all the time
I wonder what Aerys II Targaryen's daughter will do.
That...was intense.
There are errors in the GOT wiki fandoms.
Aegon V is the grandfather of the mad king Aerys II, NOT his father. Aerys II’s father is Jahaerys II who ruled for only 3 years after the disaster at Summerhall.
Very well done you’re a bona fide Westeros historian!
I went looking for game of thrones prequels after the release of the house of the dragon. HBO took them all down so people can’t dissect the new show. This video is about to go viral. Cause everyone’s gonna want to know what’s coming in the new show or better understand it. This is the video. This the one.
Instead of jon taking either stark or targaryen for his last name he should create a new house called stargaryan
Thanks!
You're very welcome, thank you so much for the donation :)
The War of the Roses (the English civil war for the throne) was the inspiration for the War of Five Kings in ASOIAF. While this fun fact is very well known in the fandom, I’ve found a lot of parallels between the early stages of the War of the Roses. For example, when King Henry V, a great military leader who had succeeded in “conquering” France, abruptly died leaving his 9 month old son Henry VI the first and only King of England AND France…he grew into an inept and incompetent king who lost all of the French territory and ultimately the dynastic dispute between the cadet branches of the royal family.
These events are clear inspirations for the Dance as well as the first Blackfyre rebellion, amongst other events concerning the turbulent times of the Targaryen dynasty.
In feudal Europe, the royal families were often overthrown by their rivals the moment a great king was proceeded by a weak son, who was sacked in favor of a more powerful family/cadet claimant. So the length of 300 years is really quite impressive considering they ruled 8-9 kingdoms spanning an entire continent lol.
Those three eggs stole I feel are danerayes dragons way later
Lmao this was in my recommendations....I've been subbed since you were doing ASoIaF character profiles....little late RUclips
The work put into these videos always amaze me. Really comprehensive and understandable. Just a little note **Baelor Breakspear has black dornish hair** I always thought it was a shame there is no king with non-obviously-notorious targaryen features when there two heirs that didn't have these.
Can't wait for house of the dragon
Love that this video doesn't conclude what happened with Daenerys and Aegon VI (Jon). Still hoping for some redemption from the book.
Jon would not be aegon 6th because rhagar already had a son with that name so it's illogical for him to name Jon that and it's more likely dany would be the ruling monarch not Jon so he'd just be king consort not king regent so he wouldn't get the number added to his name .
@@thatoneblackdude3333 only living son of the last rightful heir? Lianna called Jon Aegon and Rhaegar’s last son called Aegon died? Can’t have a number after your name unless you’re coronated or whatever they do in Martin’s work. Pretty sure this is a pointless conversation though chief.
@@chiliconnorcarne what I meNt was it doesn't make since for Jon's targaryen name be aegon because Rhaegar already had a son named aegon that's why faegon is a thing in the books if Jon has a real targaryen name it wouldn't be aegon tho it's likely he won't have one at all , the number is for the ruling monarch in this case Jon would only get the number if he was the one sitting the throne but if it's dany he'd just be king consort he wouldn't get a number is what I was saying.

Vhagar was hatched 50 years before the conquest. He wasn’t recently hatched but that’s a small issue. Great video over all 10/10 would recommend
It will take more thn 200 years to make web series and cover all Targaryen history stark's history westros n essos southros history as well as famous events occurs. George fantasy world 👍. Wht an imagination 👍
