- This indie film project by Amefika Gray features hobbyist beekeeper, PJ Martin. Over the course of a few visits PJ takes Amefika on a journey of the process of honey, from the hive to the jar.
You'll not only discover more about the nature of bees, but you'll also come to appreciate the man who cares for them. The entire soundtrack include original music by local artists, and even one by the filmmaker.
Not only was this film made in NJ, everyone who participated in it are New Jersey natives. This film made it's debut in March of 2017 at the Springfield Free Public Library, NJ. There were nearly 100 people in attendance. We hope you will enjoy it too!

The beekeeper is such a chill dude, I got happier just by watching this!
Me too. :) do you have a hive yet?
this has to be one of my favorite documentaries! Thank you for making it
we should all take on a hive. he is doing a great job.
Great work Amefika, thank you very much.
A friendly beekeeper. He loves his job and prefers simple and natural methods. It is very pleasant to do beekeeping in the immediate vicinity of the settlement in the city. It was a very good documentary. Congratulations.
I've been beekeeping for 5 years with top bar hives. This year I have added 3 Langstoths. I really enjoyed your video. I can't wait until my supers look like yours.
Really enjoyed the production value and the host personality from the hobbyist perspective still learning all you can
Oh, well done. Just well done x
I love the title - the modest beekeeper - nice work putting together a nice story well presented. Enjoyable. I'm a starting year BEEK and cannot wait til the spring bloom.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comments, Shawn! All the best in your endeavors!
Wow, the sunlight makes the honey like look like stained glass at 14:56!! Great video.
You can tell he’s a real beekeeper because he gets that Zen thing about him when he’s working with the bees 🐝
Wiping the frame with nearby leaves. Hadn't see that before. Learn something new everyday.
Love this video, just about 2 start 2 thanks ❤
Very good video, beekeeping is so much fun and I really enjoy it!
Inspiring
Great documentary. Thank you for promoting bees.
I like the congas and guitar bits!
Great Documenry
Very cool documentary thanks for posting. I love bees.
do you have hives?
@@18Bees no i wish i had land and warm climate i would have. I just love Bees.
doing some research for my own bee documentary so this is fun to see
This was so enjoyable! PJ is so likable, experienced and my favorite RUclips beekeeper to date. Haven’t checked yet but hoping he may have more on beekeeping out there.
Great video. I love seeing fellow beekeepers here in NJ
Came over from Sometimes it's just bees that way, I'm enjoying your episodes, So I am subscribing, Keep it up
Great Video I really enjoyed this.
Fun guy, knowledgeable. Enjoys the work.
i cant see nothing wrong with his method. Every beekeeper to things a little different and btw he do better than 90% of the beekeepers I know. Also he is a very pleasent person. The video is very nice. I have some hives here in the south of Brazil. Africanized bees.
Don't give credit for those toxic persons at the comment section. Keyboard rage is very common on frustrated persons.
I agree I liked the sexist joke no pun intended we all knew he was just kidding. Seems like a really nice guy.
Thanks for an EXCELLENT presentation.
Who doesn't like this?? I think it was awesome
can tell you truly care for your bees, Thanks for sharing
If Dude Lebowski were a beekeper. Abide by the bee rules, man.
Man, even the bees was chill.
Try placing a nail with the point up on the wood slat above the uncapping tank and lightly press the end bar onto the nail. That way you keep it from slipping and can rotate it to do the other side easily
Good job 👍👍👍🔔
Learned a lot from this!
I was itching the whole time watching this lol Bess creep me out a bit. This was very interesting to see; I was always curious about how the smoke affects the bees. I suggest watching Detroit Hives on planet classroom if you're into urban beekeeping or beekeeping as a hobby like this modest beekeeper.
So brood mixed with honey how do you harvest
For a lot of people US is the big brands, ballictic missiles or the White House, but for me, this is America, hard and honest working passionate people
That was very gracious of the beekeeper to show us his operation. He obviously is a caring person of his girls. Some of the comments were harsh - he hives aren't perfect - too much smoke, etc.
Well maybe he works 60 hours a week and doesn't have time to make the perfect apirary.
My only negative comment (sorry) is the cleanliness of the honey house. That was atrocious. Also, most people strain the cappings as there is a lot of honey in them as well. That not withstanding I enjoyed the video very much. Thank you. From a first year beekeeper in CT with 5 hives.
[16:68]
And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct.
[16:69]
and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.
Oh,honey bee..😊
الله يبارك لك في نحلك أخي
Jeez, you sure do pump tons of smoke on them!
If I put that much smoke on my girls I would be covered in a lot of little girls with a bad case of pms. Nopethe less smoke the better.
I learned the less smoke the better as it pisses them off just enough to push then down
Great video, I really enjoyed it!
Rock Allred thank you much!
Underrated
20:33 Slovene :) remember that
Sir nice video plese come back to agan nepal and bee hutting
What does he do with the caps he cuts off?
you can let the honey drain out and filter it, and then melt down the wax caps to reuse the wax.
We use fume boards with Fischer bee quick to empty supers
Dude just grabs a spider at 9:00
Great work how many hives have you ?
We're keepers in the uk,it's coming into spring 2018.
7 colonies went into winter and they are all alive doing well.
We've another 7 hives to set out and a few swarm boxes to help catch maybe a swarm or so.
We feed open feeding as well in the spring summer to help ferrel colonies along as well.
Can't wait to get keeping again this year.
Great! I also record videos about my bees!
Most informative bee video I've seen.
JBD Honey
He's a keeper lol
😍😍🥰🥰
Poor video editing to correct the very poor camera work! But the video was still entertaining and educational
You should show us how to do a better. I would like to learn.
I want to start bee farming sir
Make sure you educate yourself before hand!
you said you steal their honey. Since bees make honey to feed on and get through winter, how do you take care of their wellbeeing and subsequent survival?
A good beekeeper will place a syrup (sugar feed is 2 parts sugar and 1 part water but that combo is only for winter feeding. spring time is 1 part sugar to 1 part water) feeder in the hive and grease patties. It is a trade off rob their honey but give them back a food source.
A great beekeeper leaves 1 frame of honey per frame of brood or bees. Then the “surplus” honey can be gathered. Supplemental feeding is primarily done during a dearth ( lack of natural food sources)
Why not put a clearer board on and come back the next day bees would all have gone down and you walk away with a beeless box of honey
good video but he accidentally said "honey" a couple times when he was referring to nectar
I HATE SMALL HIVE BEETLES! They killed off and caused my bees to abscond. So had to buy more bees. So disappointing. I boiled them little hive killers out of my hive. I wanted to see them die. This year I changed up my set up so I'm hoping for a better outcome this year.
Dry s swiffer sheets do wonders!!! Not a cure all but you'll definitely catch an lot of beetles if you have any.. Oil traps are good too by kinda messy.
Lost me at the bongos.
bee keeper is dope
Good jop but Donat music
WAY TOO MUCH Smoke!
They're Bees NOT Chimneys!
Pffft'!
Bees become sullied & very lazy and will stop producing for the rest of the day if you smoke them like THAT, jeez! Overkill!
Pretty sure your wronf on how honey is made by the bees
no actually all he left out is the kind of gross detail on how they consume the pollen regurgitate it and feed it to another bee over and over and then it is puked into a cell cup where they dehydrate it (curing) until a certain moisture content and then cap it. He just did not go into gory detail. But I did.
Ye they basically eat it and puke it back out
@@joerowland607 Yup that's right, but it's very typical for Americans to leave out "gross" details about their food.
@@heiz__393 I do I love the expressions.
This guys hives are a mess, multiple entrances and almost falling apart. I won't bother watching this kook
his bees seem to give him a lot of honey and he cares for his bees and easy to look down on people you may have leaned something from him but now you don't know huh :)
I kind of agree with you. that one hive has multiple pieces, and is costly to replace all of that all at once. His bees are very strong and he has the knowledge. Belittling the man because he has run down equipment is not only wrong but it shows a persons true colors.
Are you running for Nobel Prize of Peace? hhahahahaha Man! The guy in the video is a caring beekeeper, love his bees and they love him back..! Did you see the size of the colony? Do you have any idea how aggressive can a large colony be? He really knows what he is doing and it's clear that he studied a lot! So let me tell you one thing.... If you value the beekeepers by the condition of their equipment I think you will be stinged a lot..! hahahaha
@@IliasZervasLeftakis You clearly know nothing about bees... Bees aren't agressive, they're defensive.
@@heiz__393 Now that's a bold statement, don't you think? You are right about the correct term, it's defensive. English is not my mother language so I used the wrong word.
