    *Summary*
    *Science Under Attack (**00:01:50**)*
    * 00:02:37 - A new article in the journal *Virology* discusses how promoting the lab leak theory without evidence is harming scientific research and pandemic preparedness.
    * 00:06:51 - Unsubstantiated claims have led to harassment, intimidation, threats, and violence toward scientists researching the origins of SARS-CoV-2.
    * 00:07:48 - This is pushing scientists away from critical research on emerging viruses and pandemic science.
    * 00:10:54 - The public should understand that the lab leak theory is an attack on the foundation of scientific knowledge.
    *RSV Vaccine Updates (**00:13:07**)*
    * 00:13:40 - The CDC now recommends a single dose of any FDA-approved RSV vaccine for all adults 75 and older, and for adults 60-74 with risk factors for severe RSV disease.
    * 00:15:15 - This updated recommendation follows reports of a small but concerning number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases potentially associated with two protein-based RSV vaccines (GSK’s Arexvy & Pfizer’s Abrysvo).
    * 00:15:29 - Moderna’s mRNA RSV vaccine (mRNA-1345) showed no signs of GBS or other neurological events.
    * 00:14:49 - Individuals who received an RSV vaccine in the previous season should not get another dose this year.
    *Concerning COVID Trends (**00:20:46**)*
    * 00:20:55 - COVID-related deaths are on the rise, particularly among elderly individuals.
    * 00:21:20 - Hospitalizations and deaths are increasing, though presenting less severely compared to earlier waves.
    * 00:23:09 - Wastewater surveillance shows a significant surge in viral levels, reaching similar levels as last winter's surge in many regions.
    *COVID Precautions (**00:23:45**)*
    * 00:23:48 - Vaccination remains critical, with updated formulations expected later this month.
    * 00:24:26 - Early treatment with Paxlovid significantly reduces the risk of progression to severe disease and death.
    * 00:24:34 - Remdesivir and other treatments are also available for appropriate cases.
    * 00:24:01 - Patients with high-risk factors should consider the prophylactic monoclonal antibody, Evusheld, to prevent infection.
    * 00:24:44 - Following isolation guidance is essential, despite inconvenience.
    *Long COVID Defined (**00:25:14**)*
    * 00:26:56 - A new definition for long COVID, published in the *New England Journal of Medicine*, focuses on it as an infection-associated chronic condition lasting for at least 3 months, affecting one or more organ systems.
    * 00:28:10 - The definition clarifies long COVID's impact and should facilitate research into treatments and support for patients.
    * 00:27:26 - Importantly, long COVID is not just associated with suffering; it can progress to a life-threatening disease.
    *Other Notes (**00:34:45**)*
    * 00:34:49 - Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable antiviral for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) administered twice a year, showed incredible efficacy in a recent study. No participants who received the medication contracted HIV.
    * 00:36:37 - Questions remain regarding availability of Novavax’s updated COVID-19 vaccine due to vial size and potential distribution challenges experienced in the past.
    * 00:39:19 - Research is ongoing regarding the potential use of Metformin to decrease COVID-19 viral loads and long COVID risk, but it's too early to draw any firm conclusions about its effectiveness or any synergistic benefits with Paxlovid.
    *Overall Message (**00:29:48**):*
COVID remains a serious health threat and the public should stay informed, vigilant, and participate in efforts to mitigate its spread and protect themselves and their communities.

At 83 years old and diabetic and asthmatic I have decided to semi-isolate. I don't socialize right now and I mask with an N95 mask when going shopping once weekly. It's a drag! It's boring! But I'm totally vaccinated and waiting for the new vaccine to come out. I hope it helps me survive another year.

I've been semi isolating as well. I have groceries delivered and go out with my son at off hours hours when shops and restaurants are mostly empty. If we arrive and a place is crowded, we go elsewhere. I use the phone, and internet to keep in contact with others. I do have a neighbor who is recovering from cancer and in the same , we get together in person. Wishing you all the best, Katie ❤

Olympics: I'm deeply shocked that 2 medal winners competed while infected. Both ignorant of the harm they were likely doing themselves and the risk they were putting others under, especially recognising that they would have been infectious for 2 days before symptoms.
I'm disgusted that the Olympic organisers have not imposed mandated testing before events especially since a surge in France is well known (& now 40 members of the Australian team have proven to be infected).
Commenting on X I'm shocked at the level of ignorance being expressed (assuming vax prevents infection is a particular theme).

Really appreciate the quality of information here. You are the best source for this non-medical professional . I echo the nurse’s story of the difficulty of finding Paxlovid; in our recent Covid cases it took another 24 hours and three drug stores to fill the prescriptions. Not at all a good situation when I tested positive on day 5 of symptoms. And this is in metro area of Minneapolis!

I think the problem is that people are mistrusting corporate money creeping in and influencing science. Thusly, people are misrusting medicine (a science based profession) more. Patients/public in general are questioning. What is driving research? What science that is not economically viable to larger influential systems, but that may be helpful for the general public is being ignored?
I love science, and logic, and critical thinking.

@Sceince01 hey its you again ! Yes I stand by my statement, ventilators were used inappropriately on tens of thousands of seniors that had "tested positive". There is a reason that the thousands of ventilators that were purchased by governments are now being scrapped. They didn't need to be isolated, neglected, and put onto mechanical breathing machines. The tubes from the intubation cause plenty of harm and I'm sure that many people suffered dearly.
